In questo elaborato di tesi ci si è occupati di riprogettare la testata del motore bicilindrico Twin Air del gruppo Fiat. La testata viene ridisegnata al fine di poter destinare questo motore, particolarmente leggero flessibile e dai bassi consumi, ad un uso aeronautico. In questa tesi si è appunto realizzata una nuova testata inserendovi 3 valvole, due di aspirazione e una di scarico, e 2 iniettori per cilinrdo. Una volta completato il disegno sono stati realizzati diversi test attraverso un software di simulazione. In particolare ci si è accertati che la camera di combustione realizzata possa resistere alle alte pressioni e temperature in gioco e che i fluidi scorrano al meglio all'interno dei condotti. Si sono utilizzati i risultati ottenuti per riprogettare iterattivamente la testa ed arrivare a un risultato finale soddisfacente.

Lo scopo della presente tesi è sviluppare un ambiente per l'ottimizzazione strutturale di componenti per applicazione aerospaziale utilizzando codici open-source. In particolare, il codice Salome viene utilizzato per il disegno automatico delle strutture, il programma Code Aster permette di effettuare l'analisi agli elementi finiti del componente, mentre Octave viene utilizzato per svolgere l'ottimizzazione basata su un algoritmo euristico e per integrare fra di loro i differenti codici. Le tecniche di ottimizzazione dei componenti stanno rivestendo sempre più importanza visto che le moderne tecniche di Additive Manufacturing permettono di realizzare strutture molto complesse che un tempo non era conveniente (o possibile) realizzare con asportazione di materiale. Nella prima parte della tesi si descrivono gli strumenti software utilizzati e la loro integrazione al fine di parametrizzare la generazione di geometrie ed effettuare in modo automatico analisi strutturali. Successivamente si descrivono tre casi di studio in cui la metodologia è stata sperimentata: un primo caso di validazione in cui si è applicato il metodo alla definizione della geometria di minimo peso per una trave a sbalzo con carico concentrato, un secondo test di ottimizzazione di un longherone per aeromobile, un terzo caso applicativo legato alla ottimizzazione di un serbatoio per fluidi in pressione da utilizzare su un satellite.

La Tesi tratta di un caso di studio di un magazzino ricambi in ottima di ottimizzazione e riprogettazione. Dall'analisi della situazione attuale in termini di scorte, processo e indice di saturazione volumetrico si evince come una nuova soluzione di magazzino sia l'unica strada da percorrere per fronteggiare l'attesa crescita del business. L'incremento delle vendite e allo stesso tempo il mantenimento dell'alto livello di servizio da garantire al cliente in termini di disponibilità dei codici e puntualità della consegna, sono due condizione che richiedono un innovazione di tipo radicale. Da un progetto a livello di Gruppo si arriva a definire la configurazione ideale del nuovo magazzino e si lascia ad uno sviluppo futuro l'effettiva gestione del tender per definire l'operatore logistico che porterà avanti il lavoro.

Il presente lavoro di tesi nasce in seguito all’esperienza di tirocinio svolta presso l’Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova di Reggio Emilia. Fulcro di questo lavoro è lo sviluppo di un sistema di pianificazione della dose per il trattamento dei pazienti sottoposti a Molecular Radionuclide Therapy (MRT). Presso tale struttura ospedaliera è già stato sviluppato uno strumento che si appoggia all’ambiente di lavoro Matlab per il calcolo dosimetrico. Tale programma è chiamato VoxelMed. Si tratta di uno strumento di calcolo che lavora al così detto voxel-level, tecnica di sviluppo recente che permette il calcolo della dose assorbita all’interno di un paziente in modo più dettagliato rispetto ai metodi di calcolo basati unicamente sulla stima media per organo, tipicamente impiegati in dosimetria tradizionale. Parte del lavoro di tesi consiste nell’implementare nuove modalità di calcolo ed aggiungere ulteriori accorgimenti all’attuale versione di VoxelMed. In VoxelMed è stata poi integrata ex-novo una componente di calcolo di misure radiobiologiche, in particolare della BED. La dose assorbita non è infatti un parametro sufficiente per valutare gli effetti della radiazione sui tessuti, a parità di tipo ed energia della radiazione gli effetti possono essere molto variabili. La BED è il parametro che tiene conto della risposta del tessuto sano o cancerogeno alla radiazione. Parte del lavoro è stato svolto sperimentalmente, tramite misure con fantocci acquisiti o preparati ad hoc. In particolare si sono utilizzati diverse tipologie di fantocci, per effettuare protocolli di calibrazione dei sistemi di acquisizione, misure di curve di effetto di volume parziale e test finali di verifica. Per un ulteriore verifica delle prestazioni di calcolo si sono effettuate misurazioni su un gruppo di pazienti e si sono confrontati i risultati con quelli ottenuti dal software maggiormente utilizzato nella pratica clinica, OLINDA/EXM.

A modo de resumen de la introducción, objetivos, bases conceptuales-teóricas, resultados y conclusiones fundamentales de nuestra tesis titulada “Apertura “Inbound” en la Empresa Industrial Española: Resultados y Factores de Influencia”, señalamos lo siguiente… En un entorno dinámico como el actual, en el que las ideas valiosas pueden darse en el interior y en el exterior de las fronteras de la empresa (Chesbrough, 2003 a), cobra especial relevancia el estudio del impacto que la Innovación Abierta podría producir sobre sus resultados y comportamiento. En esta tesis, analizaremos la cuestión a través de un Modelo General de Investigación (MGI) dividido en dos partes. En la primera (Submodelo 1) estudiaremos si la innovación abierta tipo “inbound” podría: a) Potenciar el logro de resultados de innovación de acuerdo con las premisas del Manual de Oslo actual (OECD, 2005) y b) potenciar la mejora de la “performance” productiva y comercial. Tras su análisis, observamos –empíricamente- que la apertura “entrante” puede potenciar estos resultados, pero también tenderá a generar costes. Por tanto, parece razonable recomendar no sólo una “mayor” apertura “inbound” del proceso innovador, sino además su gestión eficiente. Ahora, si el “nuevo paradigma” estratégico parece tan interesante, ¿cómo podemos potenciarlo en nuestras empresas? En la segunda parte de nuestro modelo de investigación (Submodelo 2), tratamos de hallar una respuesta. Analizaremos cuáles podrían ser los factores “potenciadores” e “inhibidores” de este comportamiento, y lo haremos bajo un enfoque recomendado por la literatura: El enfoque contingente. De este modo, llegamos a la conclusión de que la apertura “inbound” puede ser vista como una capacidad dinámica (Teece, 2007) pues sustentaría su ventaja competitiva sostenible. En suma, la empresa deberá elegir cuál es el grado de apertura más ajustado a sus propios recursos, capacidades, negocio y/o visión estratégica; y todo ello, a lo largo del tiempo...

La tesi in oggetto è stata svolta presso la Galletti spa. L'obiettivo iniziale era quello di studiare un percorso all'interno dello stabilimento produttivo al fine di enfatizzare le peculiarità della produzione tenendo conto dei fattori riguardanti la sicurezza. E' stata inoltre realizzata, con l'aiuto di una agenzia di comunicazione, una piattaforma di comunicazione. Analizzando il processo produttivo è emersa un'ulteriore problematica: l'elevata quantità di work in progress stoccati a bordo linea. In particolare, in questa tesi è stata fatta un'analisi preliminare circa una linea di produzione. Sono stati analizzati, in termini di quantità, i prodotti che vengono assemblati in essa, e i codici dei semilavorati utili. In seguito sono state studiate le operazioni che vengono svolte in ogni postazione di lavoro e, in funzione del ciclo di lavoro gli sono stati assegnati i codici dei semilavorati. L'analisi si è conclusa studiando i consumi medi. Le prossime fasi dell'analisi prevedono lo studio dei volumi dei codici e di conseguenza la definizione delle aree di stoccaggio e lo studio dei lotti di produzione.

It has been suggested that the Internet is the most significant driver of international trade in recent years to the extent that the term =internetalisation‘ has been coined (Bell, Deans, Ibbotson & Sinkovics, 2001; Buttriss & Wilkinson, 2003). This term is used to describe the Internet‘s affect on the internationalisation process of the firm. Consequently, researchers have argued that the internationalisation process of the firm has altered due to the Internet, hence is in need of further investigation. However, as there is limited research and understanding, ambiguity remains in how the Internet has influenced international market growth. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore how the Internet influences firms‘ internationalisation process, specifically, international market growth. To this end, Internet marketing and international market growth theories are used to illuminate this ambiguity in the body of knowledge. Thus, the research problem =How and why does the Internet influence international market growth of the firm’ is justified for investigation. To explore the research question a two-stage approach is used. Firstly, twelve case studies were used to evaluate key concepts, generate hypotheses and to develop a model of Internetalisation for testing. The participants held key positions within their firm, so that rich data could be drawn from international market growth decision makers. Secondly, a quantitative confirmation process analysed the identified themes or constructs, using two hundred and twenty four valid responses. Constructs were evaluated through an exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling process. Structural equation modelling was used to test the model of =internetalisation‘ to examine the interrelationships between the internationalisation process components: information availability, information usage, interaction communication, international mindset, business relationship usage, psychic distance, the Internet intensity of the firm and international market growth. This study found that the Internet intensity of the firm mediates information availability, information usage, international mindset, and business relationships when firms grow in international markets. Therefore, these results provide empirical evidence that the Internet has a positive influence on international information, knowledge, entrepreneurship and networks and these in turn influence international market growth. The theoretical contributions are three fold. Firstly, the study identifies a holistic model of the impact the Internet has had on the outward internationalisation of the firm. This contribution extends the body of knowledge pertaining to Internet international marketing by mapping and confirming interrelationships between the Internet, internationalisation and growth concepts. Secondly, the study highlights the broad scope and accelerated rate of international market growth of firms. Evidence that the Internet influences the traditional and virtual networks for the pursuit of international market growth extends the current understanding. Thirdly, this study confirms that international information, knowledge, entrepreneurship and network concepts are valid in a single model. Thus, these three contributions identify constructs, measure constructs in a multi-item capacity, map interrelationships and confirm single holistic model of ‗internetalisation‘. The main practical contribution is that the findings identified information, knowledge and entrepreneurial opportunities for firms wishing to maximise international market growth. To capitalise on these opportunities suggestions are offered to assist firms to develop greater Internet intensity and internationalisation capabilities. From a policy perspective, educational institutions and government bodies need to promote more applied programs for Internet international marketing. The study provides future researchers with a platform of identified constructs and interrelationships related to internetalisation, with which to investigate. However, a single study has limitations of generalisability; thus, future research should replicate this study. Such replication or cross validation will assist in the verification of scales used in this research and enhance the validity of causal predications. Furthermore, this study was undertaken in the Australian outward-bound context. Research in other nations, as well as research into inbound internationalisation would be fruitful.

Against a background of already thin markets in some sectors of major public sector infrastructure in Australia and the desire of Australian federal government to leverage private finance, concerns about ensuring sufficient levels of competition are prompting federal government to seek new sources of in-bound Foreign Direct Income. The aim of this paper is to justify and develop a means to deploying the eclectic paradigm of internationalisation that forms part of an Australian federally funded research project designed to explain the determinants of multinational contractors' willingness to bid for Australian public sector major infrastructure projects. Despite the dominance of the eclectic paradigm as a theory of internationalisation for over two decades, it has seen limited application in terms of multinational construction. It is expected that the research project will be the first empirical study to deploy the eclectic paradigm to inbound FDI to Australia whilst using the dominant economic theories advocated for use within the eclectic paradigm. Furthermore, the research project is anticipated to yield a number of practical benefits. These include estimates of the potential scope to attract more multinational contractors to bid for Australian public sector infrastructure, including the nature and extent to which this scope can be influenced by Australian governments responsible for the delivery of infrastructure. On the other hand, the research is also expected to indicate the extent to which indigenous and other multinational contractors domiciled in Australia are investing in special purpose technology and achieving productivity gains relative to foreign multinational contractors.

This book examines different aspects of Asian popular culture, including films, TV, music, comedy, folklore, cultural icons, the Internet and theme parks. It raises important questions such as – What are the implications of popularity of Asian popular culture for globalization? Do regional forces impede the globalizing of cultures? Or does the Asian popular culture flow act as a catalyst or conveying channel for cultural globalization? Does the globalization of culture pose a threat to local culture? It addresses two seemingly contradictory and yet parallel processes in the circulation of Asian popular culture: the interconnectedness between Asian popular culture and western culture in an era of cultural globalization that turns subjects such as Pokémon, Hip Hop or Cosmopolitan into truly global phenomena, and the local derivatives and versions of global culture that are necessarily disconnected from their origins in order to cater for the local market. It thereby presents a collective argument that, whilst local social formations, and patterns of consumption and participation in Asia are still very much dependent on global cultural developments and the phenomena of modernity, yet such dependence is often concretized, reshaped and distorted by the local media to cater for the local market. This paper presents a novel framework for the modelling of passenger facilitation in a complex environment. The research is motivated by the challenges in the airport complex system, where there are multiple stakeholders, differing operational objectives and complex interactions and interdependencies between different parts of the airport system. Traditional methods for airport terminal modelling do not explicitly address the need for understanding causal relationships in a dynamic environment. Additionally, existing Bayesian Network (BN) models, which provide a means for capturing causal relationships, only present a static snapshot of a system. A method to integrate a BN complex systems model with stochastic queuing theory is developed based on the properties of the Poisson and Exponential distributions. The resultant Hybrid Queue-based Bayesian Network (HQBN) framework enables the simulation of arbitrary factors, their relationships, and their effects on passenger flow and vice versa. A case study implementation of the framework is demonstrated on the inbound passenger facilitation process at Brisbane International Airport. The predicted outputs of the model, in terms of cumulative passenger flow at intermediary and end points in the inbound process, are found to have an $R^2$ goodness of fit of 0.9994 and 0.9982 respectively over a 10 hour test period. The utility of the framework is demonstrated on a number of usage scenarios including real time monitoring and `what-if' analysis. This framework provides the ability to analyse and simulate a dynamic complex system, and can be applied to other socio-technical systems such as hospitals.

Public economics covers both topics in welfare economic of social (as opposed to private) interest and aspects of public finance. This chapter considers the application of two methods of social economic evaluation of tourist developments, namely, social cost-benefit analysis and economic impact analysis. The role of social cost-benefit analysis in the assessment of tourism is illustrated by its application to the evaluation of inbound tourism. This is followed by a discussion of taxes on tourism and subsidies to promote it. The principle focus is on hotel room taxes. The analysis of taxes on tourism involves both public finance and welfare economics issues. The scope for and desirability of applying the user-pays principle to tourism is then examined.

This paper investigates quality of service and resource productivity implications of transit route passenger loading and travel distance. Weekday Automatic Fare Collection data for a premium radial bus route in Brisbane, Australia, is used to investigate correlation between load factor and distance factor. Relationships between boardings and transit work indicate that distance factor generally increases with load factor. Time series analysis is then presented by examining each direction on an hour by hour basis. Inbound correlation is medium to strong across the entire span of service and strong for daytime services up to 19:30, while outbound correlation is strong across the entire span. Passengers tend to be making longer distance, peak direction commuter trips under the least comfortable conditions under stretched peak schedules than off-peak. Therefore productivity gains may be possible by adjusting fleet utilization during off-peak times. Weekday profiles by direction are established for a composite load-distance factor. A threshold corresponding to standing passengers on the Maximum Load Segment reveals that on-board loading and travel distance combined are more severe during the morning inbound peak than evening outbound peak, although the sharpness of the former suggests that encouraging shoulder peak travel during the morning would be more effective than evening peak. Further research suggested includes: consideration of travel duration factor, relating noise within hour to Peak Hour Factor, profiling load-distance factor across a range of case studies, and relating load-distance factor threshold to line length.

Validation is an important issue in the development and application of Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) models, especially when the outcome of the model cannot be directly observed. Despite this, few frameworks for validating BBNs have been proposed and fewer have been applied to substantive real-world problems. In this paper we adopt the approach by Pitchforth and Mengersen (2013), which includes nine validation tests that each focus on the structure, discretisation, parameterisation and behaviour of the BBNs included in the case study. We describe the process and result of implementing a validation framework on a model of a real airport terminal system with particular reference to its effectiveness in producing a valid model that can be used and understood by operational decision makers. In applying the proposed validation framework we demonstrate the overall validity of the Inbound Passenger Facilitation Model as well as the effectiveness of the validity framework itself.

Based on Dunning's dominant international business theory and the unique characteristics of construction, a novel framework is developed and tested to explain multinational contracting into Australia. Beyond contributions to theory, Australian governments now have clear evidence upon which to develop more effective procurement reform towards increasing the attractiveness of public sector major infrastructure projects and competition in this sector.
