The four sites drilled on the Irish continental margin (Goban Spur) yielded sediments ranging in age from Holocene to Barremian. Most of the sediments were deposited in well oxygenated waters, and the small amounts of organic matter they contain are highly oxidized. During a few time intervals from the Cenomanian to earliest Turonian, however, the oxygen content of the bottom waters reached very low levels, resulting in the deposition of homogeneous or laminated black sediments containing from 0.5 to 11% total organic carbon (TOC). The original organic matter was of mixed marine and terrestrial origin. The oxidizing-reducing cycles represented by interbedded black and light sediments are probably a result of changes in both circulation and productivity. The black sediments at Sites 550, 551, and 549 were probably deposited near the lower end, middle, and upper end, respectively, of an expanded oxygen-minimum layer. The oil and gas source potential of the laminated black sediments is very good to excellent. The organic-carbon-lean sediments deposited under oxidizing conditions have no oil or gas source potential. The thermal maturity of all sediments is low.

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we explore the structural and dynamical properties of siRNA within the intercalated environment of a Mg:Al 2:1 Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticle. An ab initio force field (Condensed-phase Optimized Molecular Potentials for Atomistic Simulation Studies: COMPASS) is used for the MD simulations of the hybrid organic-inorganic systems. The structure, arrangement, mobility, close contacts and hydrogen bonds associated with the intercalated RNA are examined and contrasted with those of the isolated RNA. Computed powder X-ray diffraction patterns are also compared with related LDH-DNA experiments. As a method of probing whether the intercalated environment approximates the crystalline or rather the aqueous state, we explore the stability of the principle parameters (e.g., the major groove width) that differentiate both A- and A'- crystalline forms of siRNA and contrast this with recent findings for the same siRNA simulated in water. We find the crystalline forms remain structurally distinct when intercalated, whereas this is not the case in water. Implications for the stability of hybrid LDH-RNA systems are discussed.

Hydrogels containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are expected to be promising conjugates because they might show a synergic combination of properties from both materials. Most of the hybrid materials containing CNTs only entrap them physically, and the covalent attachment has not been properly addressed yet. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were successfully incorporated into a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel by covalent bonds to form a hybrid material. For this purpose, SWNTs were functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) to obtain water-soluble pegylated SWNTs (SWNT–PEGMA). These functionalized SWNTs were covalently bonded through their PEG moieties to a PEG hydrogel. The hybrid network was obtained from the crosslinking reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate prepolymer and the SWNT–PEGMA by dual photo-UV and thermal initiations. The mechanical and swelling properties of the new hybrid material were studied. In addition, the material and lixiviates were analyzed to elucidate any kind of SWNT release and to evaluate a possible in vitro cytotoxic effect. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon is a versatile material which is composed of different allotropes, and also come in with different structures. Carbon nanofibres (CNFs) is one dimensional carbon nanomaterials, which have exhibited superior mechanical properties, great specific area, good electrical conductivity, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. In addition to the lower cost associated to compare with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), CNFs have been attracted in numerous applications, such as reinforcement materials, filtrations, Li-ion battery, supercapacitor as well as tissue engineering, just to list a few. Therefore, it is a great deal to understand the relationship between the fabrication conditions and the characteristics of the resulted CNFs. In this project, electrospun PAN NFs were used as precursor material to fabricate carbon nanofibres. In order to produce CNFs with good morphology, the processing parameters of PAN nanofibres by electrospinning was optimized toward to the morphology at solution concentration of 12 wt%. The optimized processing parameters at given concentration were 16 kV, 14 cm and 1.5 mL/h, which led to the formation of PAN NFs with average fibre diameter of approximately 260 nm. Along with the effect of processing parameter study, the effect of concentration on the morphology was also carried out at optimized processing parameters. It was found that by increasing concentration of PAN solution from 2 to 16%, the resulted PAN transformed from beads only, to beaded fibres and finally to smooth fibres. With further increasing concentration the morphology of smooth fibres remain with increase in the fibre diameter. Electrospun PAN NFs with average fibre of 306 nm was selected to be converted into CNFs by using standard heating procedures, stabilisation in air at 280 °C and carbonization in N2. The effect of carbonization temperature ranging from 500 to 1000 °C was investigated, by using SEM, FTIR, Raman, and Impedance spectroscopy. With increasing carbonization temperature from 500 to 1000 °C, the diameter of NFs was decreased from 260 to 187, associated with loss of almost all functional groups of NFs. It was indicated by Raman results, that the graphitic crystallite size was increased from 2.62 to 5.24 nm, and the activation energy obtained for this growth was 7570 J/mol. Furthermore, impedance results (i.e. Cole-Cole plot) revealed that the electrical characteristic of CNFs transitioned from being insulating to electrically conducting in nature, suggested by the different electrical circuits extracted from Cole-Cole plots with carbonization temperature from 500 to 800 °C. The carbonization on PAN NFs with diameter of ~431nm was carried out by using novel route, microwave plasma enhance chemical vapour deposition (MPECVD) process. To compare with carbonized PAN NFs by using conventional route, MPECVD was not only able to facilitate carbonization process, but more interestingly can form carbon nanowalls (CNWs) grown on the surfaces of carbonized PAN NFs. Suggested by the unique morphology, the potential applications for the resulted carbon fibrous hybrid materials are supercapacitor electrode material, filtrations, and etc., The method developed in this project required one step less, compared with other literature. Therefore, using MPECVD on stabilised PAN NFs is proposed as economical, and straightforward approach towards mass production of carbon fibrous hybrid materials containing CNWs.

Materials that combine photoluminescence, optical transparency and facile processability are of high importance in many applications. This article reports on the development of photoluminescent poly(methyl methacrylate) materials based on novel highly emissive anionic molybdenum cluster complex [{Mo6I8}(OTs)6]2– (where OTs– is the p-toluenesulfonate ion). The materials were obtained by both solution and bulk copolymerisation of methyl methacrylate and (dMDAEMA)2[{Mo6I8}(OTs)6], where dMDAEMA+ is the polymerisable cation [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-dodecylammonium. Evaluation of the resultant hybrid materials showed that one could combine the excellent photoluminescent properties of the cluster complex with the transparency and processability of PMMA.

Ceramic pigments that own mainly the spinel structure AB2O4 are becoming a matter of great scientific and technological interest due to the ability of accommodate different cations in its structure, allowing different dopings and thus obtaining different colors. Studies on ceramic pigments currently are being directed to the development of stable and pigments obtained at low temperatures and with greater reproducibility. This work aims at the use of inorganic pigments for applications in ceramic tiles, investigating the influence of doping and calcination temperature on the coloring pigments and ceramic glazes. the based pigments of CoCr2O4, CoAl2O4, Co0,8Zn0,2Cr2O4 and Co0,8Zn0,2Al2O4 were synthesized by a chemical route using commercial gelatin as organic precursor. The materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the UVVisible region and colorimetry. The results confirmed the feasibility of synthesis used, the route presented pigments crystal structures and the desired phases were obtained from 500 °C with increased crystallinity and the crystallite size. The pigments have hues ranging from green to violet according to their doping and calcination temperatures.

Lubricants and cutting middle distillates typically have large amounts of n-paraffins to increase its freezing point and fluidity. Accordingly, the removal of n-paraffins of long chain lubricants oils and diesel is essential to get a product with good cold flow properties. The development of new catalysts, which exhibit thermal stability and catalytic activity for the hydroisomerization reaction is still a challenge. Thus, silicoaluminophosphates (SAPO) were synthesized by different routes. Have been used also post-synthesis treatment for obtaining hybrid structures and others synthesis have been carried out with mesoporous template (soft and hard-template). Therefore, SAPO have been impregnated with H2PtCl6 solution by the incipient wetness method. Then assessments of catalytic activities in hydroisomerization and hydrocracking reactions of hexadecane have been held. Besides SAPO, niobium phosphate - NbP - were also impregnated with platinum and evaluated in the same reaction. After impregnation, these catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, infrared spectroscopy with adsorbed pyridine (IV-PY), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and resonance nuclear magnetic 29Si (29Si-NMR). The characterization results by XRD have shown that it has been possible to obtain mesoporous SAPOs. However, for the syntheses with soft template there was collapse of the structure after removal of the organic template. Even so, these catalysts have been actives. It was possible to obtain hybrid materials through the synthesis of SAPO-11 made with hard templates and by means of post-synthesis treatments samples of SAPO-11. Moreover, NbP has shown characteristic XRD of amorphous materials, with high acidity and were active in the conversion of hexadecane.

Organic-inorganic nanocomposites combine unique properties of both the constituents in one material. Among this group of materials, clay based as well as ZnO, TiO2 nanocomposites have been found to have diverse applications. Optoelectronic devices require polymerinorganic systems to meet certain desired properties. Dielectric properties of conventional polymers like poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and polystyrene (PS) may also be tailor tuned with the incorporation of inorganic fillers in very small amounts. Electrical conductivity and surface resistivity of polymer matrices are found to improve with inorganic nanofillers. II-VI semiconductors and their nano materials have attracted material scientists because of their unique optical properties of photoluminescence, UV photodetection and light induced conductivity. Cadmium selenide (CdSe), zinc selenide (ZnSe) and zinc oxide (ZnO) are some of the most promising members of the IIVI semiconductor family, used in light-emitting diodes, nanosensors, non-linear optical (NLO) absorption etc. EVA and PS materials were selected as the matrices in the present study because they are commercially used polymers and have not been the subject of research for opto-electronic properties with semiconductor nanomaterials

Wearable electronic textiles are an emerging research field playing a pivotal role among several different technological areas such as sensing, communication, clothing, health monitoring, information technology, and microsystems. The possibility to realise a fully-textile platform, endowed with various sensors directly realised with textile fibres and fabric, represents a new challenge for the entire research community. Among several high-performing materials, the intrinsically conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), doped with poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSS), or PEDOT:PSS, is one of the most representative and utilised, having an excellent chemical and thermal stability, as well as reversible doping state and high conductivity. This work relies on PEDOT:PSS combined with sensible materials to design, realise, and develop textile chemical and physical sensors. In particular, chloride concentration and pH level sensors in human sweat for continuous monitoring of the wearer's hydration status and stress level are reported. Additionally, a prototype smart bandage detecting the moisture level and pH value of a bed wound to allow the remote monitoring of the healing process of severe and chronic wounds is described. Physical sensors used to monitor the pressure distribution for rehabilitation, workplace safety, or sport tracking are also presented together with a novel fully-textile device able to measure the incident X-ray dose for medical or security applications where thin, comfortable, and flexible features are essential. Finally, a proof-of-concept for an organic-inorganic textile thermoelectric generator that harvests energy directly from body heat has been proposed. Though further efforts must be dedicated to overcome issues such as durability, washability, power consumption, and large-scale production, the novel, versatile, and widely encompassing area of electronic textiles is a promising protagonist in the upcoming technological revolution.

This paper presents the fabrication of a nanothick Co-modified film electrochemically synthesized on layer-by-layer (LbL) structures made with dendrimer polyamidoamine/carbon nanotubes (PAMAM/CNT), and its electrocatalytic properties toward H(2)O(2) reduction. Scanning electron microscopy indicated the formation of a homogeneous, 14 nm thick Co film. The porous nature of the PAMAM/CNT LbL film allowed the electrolyte access to the bottom of the electrode, generating a homogenous Co electrodeposit. In addition, the nanostructure based on Co-modified PAMAM/CNT LbL exhibited high electrocatalytic activity for H(2)O(2) reduction when compared to the Co-free PAMAM/CNT LbL film, which demonstrates the suitability of the system studied for biosensing. Sucrose was used to prepare montmorillonite/carbon nanocomposites by calcination in a reduced atmosphere. The aim was to investigate the changes derived from varying the clay and sucrose content in the resulting material and to change the adsorption properties to evaluate its potential to be used in catalytic applications. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of an intercalated nanostructure composed of carbon-filled clay mineral layers, which was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetry curves. Differences in composition and texture surface were detected by scanning electron microscopy images and were supported by viscosity measurements. These measurements were helpful in understanding why the sample prepared with the highest sucrose content presented the lowest gasoline and methylene blue adsorption results and why the highest adsorption properties were attributed to the sample with the highest clay content. Moreover, BET and BJH studies allowed understanding oleic acid catalytic conversion. Finally, a water flux simulation test was performed to determine the mechanical resistance in comparison to an activated carbon. It was found that the nanocomposites were more resistant, supporting their use in catalytic applications for a longer period of time. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new complex of Eu(3+) with the 3-hydroxypicolinamide ligand (Hhpa). Here we present an approach for obtaining bis[2-carbamoyl(kappa O)pyridin-3-olato(kappa O`)] lanthanide complexes, which were characterized through elemental analysis, thermal analysis, infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopies (emission, excitation, luminescence lifetimes, quantum efficiencies, Judd-Ofelt parameters and quantum yields). Although hpa can act as a bidentate ligand in different conformations, the results attest for the occurrence of a unique coordination site of low symmetry for the Eu(3+) ions, in which two anionic hpa ligands coordinate the cations through an O/O chelating system. The phosphorescence of the synthesized gadolinium complex provides the energy of the triplet state, which is determined to be at 20,830 cm(-1) over the ground state. This makes the Hhpa ligand very adequate for sensitizing the Eu(3+) luminescence, which leads to a very efficient antenna effect and opens a wide range of applications for the complex in light emitting organic-inorganic devices.
