Single oxides of Ti and Zr incorporated SBA-15 were prepared and characterized by N-2 adsorption, NMR, and XPS techniques. Si-29 MAS NMR results suggest the formation of Si-O-X linkages (X: Ti or Zr) by an increase in the ratio of Q(3)/Q(4) in the presence of Ti or Zr. XPS analysis of Ti-SBA-15 catalysts indicate the presence of Ti-O-Si bonds in addition to Ti-O-Ti and Si-O-Si bonds, supporting the NMR evidence.

The island of Mauritius offers the opportunity to study the poorly understood vegetation response to climate change on a small tropical oceanic island. A high-resolution pollen record from a 10 m long peat core from Kanaka Crater (560 m elevation, Mauritius, Indian Ocean) shows that vegetation shifted from a stable open wet forest Last Glacial state to a stable closed-stratified-tall-forest Holocene state. An ecological threshold was crossed at ∼11.5 cal ka BP, propelling the forest ecosystem into an unstable period lasting ∼4000 years. The shift between the two steady states involves a cascade of four abrupt (<150 years) forest transitions in which different tree species dominated the vegetation for a quasi-stable period of respectively ∼1900, ∼1100 and ∼900 years. We interpret the first forest transition as climate-driven, reflecting the response of a small low topography oceanic island where significant spatial biome migration is impossible. The three subsequent forest transitions are not evidently linked to climate events, and are suggested to be driven by internal forest dynamics. The cascade of four consecutive events of species turnover occurred at a remarkably fast rate compared to changes during the preceding and following periods, and might therefore be considered as a composite tipping point in the ecosystem. We hypothesize that wet gallery forest, spatially and temporally stabilized by the drainage system, served as a long lasting reservoir of biodiversity and facilitated a rapid exchange of species with the montane forests to allow for a rapid cascade of plant associations.

A free association test was used in the present study to examine the availability and accessibility of positive vs negative smoking-related information in the long-term memories of smokers. Participants were asked to generate smoking-related associations across a 4-minute interval. Although smokers generated more positive smoking-associations than non-smokers, both groups produced a greater number of negative than positive associations per se. Of particular interest was the finding that whilst the ratio of positive/negative associations generated was constant across time in non-smokers, this ratio varied in smokers. Specifically, smokers generated proportionately more of their available positive associations and proportionately less of their negative associations in the early time interval. It is suggested that these results not only indicate a greater availability of positive smoking-associations in smokers compared to non-smokers, but also a greater accessibility too. It is proposed that positive smoking associations are more automatically activated than negative associations in smokers, even though they have generally more negative associations available.

OBJECTIVE-To examine associations of neonatal adiposity with maternal glucose levels and cord serum C-peptide in a multicenter multinational study, the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study, thereby assessing the Pederson hypothesis linking maternal glycemia and fetal hyperinsulinemia to neonatal adiposity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-Eligible pregnant women underwent a standard 75-g oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 32 weeks gestation (as close to 28 weeks as possible). Neonatal anthropometrics and cord serum C-peptide were measured. Associations of maternal glucose and cord serum C-peptide with neonatal adiposity (sum of skin folds >90th percentile or percent body fat >90th percentile) were assessed using multiple logistic regression analyses, with adjustment for potential confounders, including maternal age, parity, BMI, mean arterial pressure, height, gestational age at delivery, and the baby's sex. RESULTS-Among 23,316 HAPO Study participants with glucose levels blinded to caregivers, cord serum C-peptide results were available for 19,885 babies and skin fold measurements for 19,389. For measures of neonatal adiposity, there were strong statistically significant gradients across increasing levels of maternal glucose and cord serum C-peptide, which persisted after adjustment for potential confounders. In fully adjusted continuous variable models, odds ratios ranged from 1.35 to 1.44 for the two measures of adiposity for fasting, 1-h, and 2-h plasma glucose higher by 1 SD. CONCLUSIONS-These findings confirm the link between maternal glucose and neonatal adiposity and suggest that the relationship is mediated by fetal insulin production and that the Pedersen hypothesis describes a basic biological relationship influencing fetal growth. © 2009 by the American Diabetes Association.

Dyslipoproteinemia has been associated with nephropathy in diabetes, with stronger correlations in men than in women. We aimed to characterize and compare plasma lipoprotein profiles associated with normal and increased albuminuria in men and women using apolipoprotein-defined lipoprotein subclasses and simple apolipoprotein measures.

Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely used not only as optical labels or ‘weight” labels for the detections of biorecognition events but also an amplifier of surface plasmon resonance biosensors. The intrinsic property of gold nuclei composing of a group of Au atoms to catalyze the reduction of metal ions on the NPs and thereby to enlarge the metallic nanoparticles is employed in different biosensing paths. In a solution containing Au+ ions (e.g. HAuCl4) and the Au clusters, hydrated electrons which are reduced from oxidation of reducers (H2O2, sodium citrate, ascorbic acid, or NaBH4) will be used to reduce the Au+ ion leading to the deposition of Au+ to the Au0 (Au clusters). The reaction will be catalyzed continuously by the Au0 until the Au+ ions and hydrated electrons are exhausted. As a result, the AuNPs will be grown and their optical properties are also changed. If the AuNP nanoclusters are used as probes, the color change will be dependent on amount of analytes, thus give a quantitative monitoring of the analytes.

In this study, we incorporate the use of magnetic beads with the nanocrystalline growth to quantify a target protein based on immunoreactions. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is chosen as the target analyte because of its values in diagnosis of prostate cancer. A double-sandwiched immunoassay is performed by gold-tagged monoclonal PSA antibody-PSA antigen – magnetic bead-tagged polyclonal PSA antibody interactions. After the immunoreactions, the target analytes are preconcentrated and separated by the magnetic beads while the nanogrowth plays a role of colorimetric signal developer.

The result shows that this is a very sensitive, robust and excellent strategy to detect biological interactions. PSA antigen is detected at femtomolar level with very high specificity under the presence of undesired proteins of crude samples. Furthermore, the method also shows great potential to detect other biological interactions. More details will be described in our presentation.

Immune complexes containing modified LDL (LDL-IC) and NMR-determined Total LDL particle concentrations are significantly associated with intima-media thickness (IMT). We analyzed the associations between concentrations of NMR-determined lipoprotein subclasses and LDL-IC in the DCCT/EDIC cohort. Serum apolipoprotein C-III (apoCIII) concentration and apoCIII gene polymorphisms have been shown to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In addition, no studies have been performed that address these issues in type 1 diabetes. The current study investigated apoCIII protein and apoCIII gene variation in a normotriglyceridemic (82 +/- 57 mg/dL) population of patients with type 1 diabetes, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) cohort. Blood samples were obtained in 409 patients after an overnight fast. Serum apoCIII concentration was highly correlated with multiple changes in lipids and lipoproteins that resulted in an adverse cardiovascular disease risk profile. Higher apoCIII concentrations were associated (P <.0001) with increased triglycerides (r = 0.78), total (r = 0.61) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (r = 0.40) cholesterol, apoA-I (r = 0.26), and apoB (r = 0.50), and these relationships persisted after controlling for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lipoprotein subclass analyses demonstrated that apoCIII was correlated with an increase in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) subclasses (P = .0001). There also was a highly significant positive relationship between serum apoCIII concentration and the LDL particle concentration in both men (r = 0.49, P = .001) and women (r = 0.40, P = .001), and a highly significant negative relationship between serum apoCIII levels and average LDL particle size in both men (r = -0.37, P = .001) and women (r = -0.22, P = .001) due primarily to an augmentation in the small L1 subclass (r = 0.42, P = .0001). Neither the T(-455) --> C polymorphism affecting an insulin response element in the apoCIII gene promoter nor a SacI polymorphism in the 3'UTR were associated with any alterations in circulating apoCIII concentrations, serum lipids, apolipoprotein concentrations, lipoprotein composition, or parameters measured by NMR lipoprotein subclass analyses. In summary, elevated apoCIII concentration was associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease in normolipidemic type 1 diabetic patients through associated changes in lipoprotein subfraction distributions, which were independent of apoCIII genotype.

Lipoproteins may contribute to diabetic nephropathy. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) can quantify subclasses and mean particle size of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL), and LDL particle concentration. The relationship between detailed lipoprotein analyses and diabetic nephropathy is of interest.

Prior research has argued that use of optional properties in conceptual models results in loss of information about the semantics of the domains represented by the models. Empirical research undertaken to date supports this argument. Nevertheless, no systematic analysis has been done of whether use of optional properties is always problematic. Furthermore, prior empirical research might have deliberately or unwittingly employed models where use of optionality always causes problems. Accordingly, we examine analytically whether use of optional properties is always problematic. We employ our analytical results to inform the design of an experiment where we systematically examined the impact of optionality on users’ ability to understand domains represented by different types of conceptual models. We found evidence that use of optionality undermines users’ ability to understand the domain represented by a model but that this effect weakens when use of mandatory properties to replace optional properties leads to more-complex models.
