Aluminum Alloys are widely used as structural materials in the aerospace industry due to low weight, high mechanical strength and enduring corrosion resistance. Their resistance to corrosion is attributed to the rapidly formed stable oxide film (Al2O3) which spontaneously forms itself on the surface of the material. However, in the presence of aggressive ions, such as halide, Aluminum Alloys are subject to a localized process of corrosion. The electrochemical behavior of 7081-T73511 and 7050-T7451 Aluminum Alloys employed in the aerospace industry was investigated using a 0.6 M NaCl solution under the conditions of a controlled mass transport employing a rotating disk electrode. The theoretical limiting current density was determined by the Kouteki-Levich equation. The results confirmed that the inter-metallic Al7Cu2Fe acts as preferential cathode generating the galvanic coupling and the dissolution of the Aluminummatrix around it.

Fuel cells powered directly with ethanol (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell-DEFC) are very attractive for the possibility of using a renewable fuel in the generation of clean energy. However, it is still necessary to deepen the understanding of catalytic processes and their dependence on the catalytic properties. This work proposes to study the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in an alkaline medium of Pd nanoparticles supported in carbon oxide hybrids using various transition metal oxides (MoO3, TiO2, WO3 and ZrO2). The materials prepared were characterized by techniques such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) to verify the structure, the distribution of particles in the supports and the presence of Pd on particles oxide. Experiments of X-rays absorption spectroscopy were carried out using soft X-rays (SXS) to evaluate the changes in the electronic properties of the Pd particles caused by interactions with different oxides. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry and potential sweeps of adsorbed CO oxidation allowed evaluating general aspects of the catalysts' electrochemical behavior and determining the electrochemically active area thereof. The catalytic performances of ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium were evaluated by electrochemical techniques (potential scan and chronoamperometry), and showed an improvement in activity with the addition of oxides in material containing only carbon, which was most pronounced for the catalyst containing TiO2. This improvement was predominantly associated with the electronic effects caused by the interaction of Pd on the support, causing a vacancy in the 4d band of Pd which, in turn, produces variations in adsorption energies of the species...

Tetradifon, a potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic pesticide, can contribute to environmental and human contamination when applied to green bell pepper crops. In this context, in this work, a reliable and sensitive method for determination of tetradifon in Brazilian green bell pepper samples involving a differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique on a glassy carbon electrode is proposed. The electrochemical behavior of tetradifon as followed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that its reduction occurs via an irreversible five-electron transfer vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl, KCl 3 M reference electrode. Very well-resolved diffusion controlled voltammetric peaks have been obtained in a supporting electrolyte solution composed of a mixture of 40% dimethylformamide (DMF), 30% methanol, and 30% NaOH 0.3 mol L-1 at -1.43, -1.57, -1.73, -1.88, and -2.05 V. The proposed DPV method has a good linear response in the 3.00 - 10.0 mu mol L-1 range, with a limit of detection (L.O.D) of 0.756 mu mol L-1 and 0.831 mu mol L-1 in the absence and in the presence of the matrix, respectively. Moreover, improved L.O.D results (0.607 mu mol L-1) have been achieved in the absence of DMF from the supporting electrolyte solution. Recovery has been evaluated in five commercial green bell pepper samples, and recovery percentages ranging from 91.0 to 109 have been obtained for tetradifon determinations. The proposed voltammetric method has also been tested for reproducibility, repeatability, and potential interferents, and the results obtained for these three analytical parameters are satisfactory for electroanalytical purposes. An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance Au electrode modified with a Se thin film was used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of lead ad-atoms using underpotential deposition (UPD) conditions. A specific quasi-reversible process was observed during the reduction of Pb2+ on Se thin films in perchloric acid media. The charge density of Pb ad-atoms on Se thin film (46.86 mu C cm(-2)) suggests a recovery of 0.1 monolayers, which is in good agreement with EQCM data. The Se thin film can be successfully alloyed with Pb atoms that are deposited by chronoamperometry using time intervals large enough to allow for diffusion toward the inner Se phase. Linear sweep voltammetry combined with EQCM in perchloric acid was used to characterize the amount of Pb absorbed in the Se thin film. These findings offer a new strategy for alloy formation in semiconductor films using UPD as an effective tool to quantify the exact amount of the incorporated metal.

Nowadays, rechargeable Li-ion batteries play an important role in portable consumer devices. Formulation of such batteries is improvable by researching new cathodic materials that present higher performances of cyclability and negligible efficiency loss over cycles. Goal of this work was to investigate a new cathodic material, copper nitroprusside, which presents a porous 3D framework. Synthesis was carried out by a low-cost and scalable co-precipitation method. Subsequently, the product was characterized by means of different techniques, such as TGA, XRF, CHN elemental analysis, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical tests were finally performed both in coin cells and by using in situ cells: on one hand, coin cells allowed different formulations to be easily tested, on the other operando cycling led a deeper insight to insertion process and both chemical and physical changes. Results of several tests highlighted a non-reversible electrochemical behavior of the material and a rapid capacity fading over time. Moreover, operando techniques report that amorphisation occurs during the discharge.

A large π-conjugated chromophore composed of two dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine units directly fused to the central tetrathiafulvalene core has been prepared as a bridging ligand and its strong binding ability to Ru2+ to form a new dinuclear complex is presented. The electronic absorption and luminescence spectra and the electrochemical behavior of the free ligand and the Ru2+ complex have been investigated in detail. The free ligand shows a very strong band in the UV region consistent with ligand-centered π–π* transitions and an intense broad band in the visible region that corresponds to an intramolecular charge-transfer (ILCT) transition. Upon coordination, a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer band appears at 22520 cm−1, and the ILCT band is bathochromically shifted by 1620 cm−1. These electrochemically amphoteric chromophores have also been characterized by spectro-electrochemical methods. The oxidized radical species of the free ligand show a strong tendency to undergo aggregation, in which long-distance attractive interactions overcome the electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, these two new chromophores reveal an ILCT fluorescence with large solvent-dependent Stokes shifts and quantum efficiencies of 0.052 for the free ligand and 0.016 for its dinuclear Ru2+ complex in CH2Cl2.

The monoliths studied in this work show large specific surface areas (up to 1600 m2 g-1), high densities (up to 1.17 g cm-3) and high electrical conductivities (up to 9.5 S cm-1). They are microporous carbons with pore sizes up to 1.3 nm but most of them below 0.75 nm. They also show oxygen functionalities. The electrochemical behavior of the monoliths is studied in three-electrode cells with aqueous H2SO4 solution as electrolyte. This work deals with the contribution of the sulfate ions and protons to the specific capacitance of carbon monoliths having different surface areas and different contents of oxygen groups. Protons contribute with a pseudocapacitance (up to 152 F g-1) in addition to the double layer capacitance. Sulfate ions contribute with a double layer capacitance only. At the double layer, the capacitance of the sulfate ions (up to 291 F g-1) is slightly higher than that of protons (up to 251 F g-1); both capacitances increase as the surface area increases. The preference of protons to be electroadsorbed at the double layer and the broader voltage window of these ions account for their higher contribution (70 %) to the double layer capacitance.

Polymer/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared. Intercalation of 2-aminobenzene sulfonic acid with aniline monomers into montmorillonite modified by cation was followed by subsequent oxidative polymerization of monomers in the interlayer spacing. The clay was prepared by cation exchange process between sodium cation in (M–Na) and copper cation (M–Cu). XRD analyses show the manifestation of a basal spacing (d-spacing) for M–Cu changes depending on the inorganic cation and the polymer intercalated in the M–Cu structure. TGA analyses reveal that polymer/M–Cu composites is less stable than M–Cu. The conductivity of the composites is found to be 103 times higher than that for M–Cu. The microscopic examinations including TEM picture of the nanocomposite demonstrated an entirely different and more compatible morphology. Remarkable differences in the properties of the polymers have also been observed by UV–Vis and FTIR, suggesting that the polymer produced with presence of aniline has a higher degree of branching. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites has been studied by cyclic voltammetry which indicates the electroactive effect of nanocomposite gradually increased with aniline in the polymer chain.

Polyaniline/montmorillonite nanocomposites (PANI/M) were obtained by intercalation of aniline monomer into M modified with different cations and subsequent oxidative polymerization of the aniline. The modified-clay was prepared by ion exchange of sodium, copper and iron cations in the clay (Na–M, Cu–M and Fe–M respectively). Infrared spectroscopy confirms the electrostatic interaction between the oxidized PANI and the negatively charged surface of the clay. X-ray diffraction analysis provides structural information of the prepared materials. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and their thermal degradation was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The weight loss suggests that the PANI chains in the nanocomposites have higher thermal stability than pure PANI. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites increased between 12 and 24 times with respect to the pure M and this increase was dependent on the cation-modification. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a good electrochemical response was observed.

The electrochemical behavior of methanesulfonic acid on platinum single crystal electrode surfaces is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and infrared spectroscopy measurements. The results are compared with the voltammetric profiles of perchloric and trifluoromethanesulfonic acids. The differences are interpreted in terms of the effect of the anion on the structure of water. No adsorbed species are detected by infrared spectroscopy.

A simple method was used to synthesize poly(2-aminophenol), poly(2-aminophenol-co-Aniline) and polyaniline nanocomposites with sodium-montmorillonite (Na-M) using in situ intercalative oxidative polymerization. Morphology and thermal properties of the synthesized nanocomposites were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal analysis shows an improved thermal stability of the nanocomposites in comparison with the pure poly(2-aminophenol). The intercalation of polymers into the clay layers was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies, TEM images and FTIR spectroscopy. In addition, the room temperature conductivity values of these nanocomposites varied between 8.21 × 10−5 and 6.76 × 10−4 S cm−1. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites, has been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. Good electrochemical response has been observed for polymer films; the observed redox processes indicate that the polymerization into Na-M produces electroactive polymers.
