This paper investigates stability and asymptotic properties of the error with respect to its nominal version of a nonlinear time-varying perturbed functional differential system subject to point, finite-distributed, and Volterra-type distributed delays associated with linear dynamics together with a class of nonlinear delayed dynamics. The boundedness of the error and its asymptotic convergence to zero are investigated with the results being obtained based on the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias analysis.

A Otimização por Enxame de Partículas (PSO, Particle Swarm Optimization) é uma técnica de otimização que vem sendo utilizada na solução de diversos problemas, em diferentes áreas do conhecimento. Porém, a maioria das implementações é realizada de modo sequencial. O processo de otimização necessita de um grande número de avaliações da função objetivo, principalmente em problemas complexos que envolvam uma grande quantidade de partículas e dimensões. Consequentemente, o algoritmo pode se tornar ineficiente em termos do desempenho obtido, tempo de resposta e até na qualidade do resultado esperado. Para superar tais dificuldades, pode-se utilizar a computação de alto desempenho e paralelizar o algoritmo, de acordo com as características da arquitetura, visando o aumento de desempenho, a minimização do tempo de resposta e melhoria da qualidade do resultado final. Nesta dissertação, o algoritmo PSO é paralelizado utilizando três estratégias que abordarão diferentes granularidades do problema, assim como dividir o trabalho de otimização entre vários subenxames cooperativos. Um dos algoritmos paralelos desenvolvidos, chamado PPSO, é implementado diretamente em hardware, utilizando uma FPGA. Todas as estratégias propostas, PPSO (Parallel PSO), PDPSO (Parallel Dimension PSO) e CPPSO (Cooperative Parallel PSO), são implementadas visando às arquiteturas paralelas baseadas em multiprocessadores, multicomputadores e GPU. Os diferentes testes realizados mostram que, nos problemas com um maior número de partículas e dimensões e utilizando uma estratégia com granularidade mais fina (PDPSO e CPPSO), a GPU obteve os melhores resultados. Enquanto, utilizando uma estratégia com uma granularidade mais grossa (PPSO), a implementação em multicomputador obteve os melhores resultados.

The inability of emissions reduction methods to meet upcoming legislation without an unacceptable increase in vehicle cost is a major problem of automobile manufacturer. This work aims to develop a cost-effective reduction of automobile emissions. A prototype CO2 sensor with 5 msec response time was built and bench tested, then used on an engine. The sensor design was based on standard emissions measurement technology using non-dispersive IR absorption. An improved sensor has now been completed with significant improvements in terms of signal to noise ratio and long-term stability. The improved sensor will be used to measure CO2 concentrations on three different engines. The results will then be used to validate engine and catalyst models and to propose control strategies aimed at reducing overall emissions. A brief description of the sensor itself was presented. When a thin rectangular plate is restrained on the two long edges and free on the remaining edges, the equivalent stiffness of the restraining joints can be identified by the order of the natural frequencies obtained using the free response of the plate at a single location. This work presents a method to identify the equivalent stiffness of the restraining joints, being represented as simply supporting the plate but elastically restraining it in rotation. An integral transform is used to map the autospectrum of the free response from the frequency domain to the stiffness domain in order to identify the equivalent torsional stiffness of the restrained edges of the plate and also the order of natural frequencies. The kernel of the integral transform is built interpolating data from a finite element model of the plate. The method introduced in this paper can also be applied to plates or shells with different shapes and boundary conditions. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ubiquitous in-building Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) today are limited by costly active radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and short range portal readers of low cost passive RFID tags. We, however, present a novel technology locates RFID tags using a new approach based on (a) minimising RFID fading using antenna diversity, frequency dithering, phase dithering and narrow beam-width antennas, (b) measuring a combination of RSSI and phase shift in the coherent received tag backscatter signals and (c) being selective of use of information from the system by, applying weighting techniques to minimise error. These techniques make it possible to locate tags to an accuracy of less than one metre. This breakthrough will enable, for the first time, the low-cost tagging of items and the possibility of locating them at relatively high precision.

Understanding mixture formation phenomena during the first few cycles of an engine cold start is extremely important for achieving the minimum engine-out emission levels at the time when the catalytic converter is not yet operational. Of special importance is the structure of the charge (film, droplets and vapour) which enters the cylinder during this time interval as well as its concentration profile. However, direct experimental studies of the fuel behaviour in the inlet port have so far been less than fully successful due to the brevity of the process and lack of a suitable experimental technique. We present measurements of the hydrocarbon (HC) concentration in the manifold and port of a production SI engine using the Fast Response Flame Ionisation Detector (FRFID). It has been widely reported in the past few years how the FRFID can be used to study the exhaust and in-cylinder HC concentrations with a time resolution of a few degrees of crank angle, and the device has contributed significantly to the understanding of unburned HC emissions. Using the FRFID in the inlet manifold is difficult because of the presence of liquid droplets, and the low and fluctuating pressure levels, which leads to significant changes in the response time of the instrument. However, using recently developed procedures to correct for the errors caused by these effects, the concentration at the sampling point can be reconstructed to align the FRFID signal with actual events in the engine. © 1996 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

The geological profile of submerged slopes on the continental shelf typically includes soft cohesive soils with thicknesses ranging from a few meters to tens or hundreds of meters. The response of these soils in simple shear tests is largely influenced by the presence of an initial consolidation shear stress, inducing anisotropic stress-strain-strength properties which depend also on the direction of shear. In this paper, a new simplified effective-stress-based model describing the behavior of normally to lightly overconsolidated cohesive soils is used in conjunction with a one-dimensional seismic site response analysis computer code to illustrate the importance of accounting for anisotropy and small strain nonlinearity. In particular, a simple example is carried out to compare results for different slope inclinations. Depth profiling of the maximum shear strains and permanent deformations provide insight into the mechanisms of deformation during a seismic event, and the effects of sloping ground conditions.

A photodiode consisting of nanopillars of thin-film silicon p-i-n on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a noncontinuous cathode electrode is demonstrated. The structure exploits the intrinsic enhancement of the CNTs' electric field, which leads to reduction in the photodiode's operating voltage and response time and enhancement of optical coupling due to better light trapping, as compared with the conventional planar photodiode. These improvements translate to higher resolution and higher frame rate flat-panel imaging systems for a broad range of applications, including computed tomography and particle detection.

A thermo-optic variable optical attenuator module composed of a silicon-on-insulator attenuator chip and driving circuit was designed and fabricated. The module exhibited a maximum attenuation of 21.8 dB and a response time of 10 mu s. (c) 2005 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Based on thermo-optical effect of silicon, a 2 x 2 switch is fabricated in silicon-on-insulator by chemical etching. The switch presents an extinction ratio of 26 dB and a power consumption of 169 mW. The response time F similar to 10.5 mus.

Based on an idea that spatial separation of charge states can enhance quantum coherence, we propose a scheme for a quantum computation with the quantum bit (qubit) constructed from two coupled quantum dots. Quantum information is stored in the electron-hole pair state with the electron and hole located in different dots, which enables the qubit state to be very long-lived. Universal quantum gates involving any pair of qubits are realized by coupling the quantum dots through the cavity photon which is a hopeful candidate for the transfer of long-range information. The operation analysis is carried out by estimating the gate time versus the decoherence time.

In this paper, we present simulation results of an electrooptical variable optical attenuator (VOA) inte-grated in silicon-on-insulator waveguide. The device is functionally based on free carriers absorption toachieve attenuation. Beam propagation method (BPM) and two-dimensional semiconductor device simu-lation tool PISCES-Ⅱ were used to analyze the dc and transient characteristics of the device. The devicehas a response time (including rise time and fall time) less than 200 ns, much faster than the thermoopticand micro-electromechanical systems (MEMSs) based VOAs.

The responses of a cryohydrogel tyrosinase enzyme electrode to four substrates in three pure water immiscible organic solvents were investigated. Kinetic parameters, the maximum kinetic current, I-max, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, K-m(app), and I-max/K-m(app), were calculated. The I-max/K-m(app) value was taken as an indicator of the catalytic efficiency of the sensor. The effect of the substrate hydrophobicity on I-max/K-m(app) and response time of the sensor were discussed. The effects of both hydrophobicity (log P) and dielectric constant (epsilon) of the organic solvent on the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme in the organic phase were studied. Stimulus-Response Compatibility is a key concept in human-machine interaction. It is proved that to map stimulus to response according to salient-feature coding principle will get a compatible pair. In the designing of Chinese Pinyin Code inputting devices, stimulus-response compatibility will bring the device with features of ease of use and ease of learning. In this research, Response time and error rates of two designs of salient-feature coding principle and one design of random mapping were tested along with the QWERTY keyboard. Cross-modal Compatibility Effects were found, and no significant difference between two salient-feature coding types, both on response time and error rates; but response time has shown difference between salient-feature coding designs and random mapping design. Compared with the QWERTY keyboard group, the error rates of subjects of chord keyboard group showed no significant differences. But subjects assigned to the QWERTY keyboard group have a shorter response time. One possible reason is the subjects of chord keyboard group only at beginner skill after at most 6 hours practice whereas subjects of QWERTY group were at least at novice level after take a foundation of computer class at their own college.

PILOT is a programming system constructed in LISP. It is designed to facilitate the development of programs by easing the familiar sequence: write some code, run the program, make some changes, write some more code, run the program again, etc. As a program becomes more complex, making these changes becomes harder and harder because the implications of changes are harder to anticipate. In the PILOT system, the computer plays an active role in this evolutionary process by providing the means whereby changes can be effected immediately, and in ways that seem natural to the user. The user of PILOT feels that he is giving advice, or making suggestions, to the computer about the operation of his programs, and that the system then performs the work necessary. The PILOT system is thus an interface between the user and his program, monitoring both in the requests of the user and operation of his program. The user may easily modify the PILOT system itself by giving it advice about its own operation. This allows him to develop his own language and to shift gradually onto PILOT the burden of performing routine but increasingly complicated tasks. In this way, he can concentrate on the conceptual difficulties in the original problem, rather than on the niggling tasks of editing, rewriting, or adding to his programs. Two detailed examples are presented. PILOT is a first step toward computer systems that will help man to formulate problems in the same way they now help him to solve them. Experience with it supports the claim that such "symbiotic systems" allow the programmer to attack and solve more difficult problems.
