In this paper a theory for two-person zero sum multicriterion differential games is presented. Various solution concepts based upon the notions of Pareto optimality (efficiency), security and equilibrium are defined. These are shown to have interesting applications in the formulation and analysis of two target or combat differential games. The methods for obtaining outcome regions in the state space, feedback strategies for the players and the mode of play has been discussed in the framework of bicriterion zero sum differential games. The treatment is conceptual rather than rigorous.

We offer a technique, motivated by feedback control and specifically sliding mode control, for the simulation of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) that describe common engineering systems such as constrained multibody mechanical structures and electric networks. Our algorithm exploits the basic results from sliding mode control theory to establish a simulation environment that then requires only the most primitive of numerical solvers. We circumvent the most important requisite for the conventionalsimulation of DAEs: the calculation of a set of consistent initial conditions. Our algorithm, which relies on the enforcement and occurrence of sliding mode, will ensure that the algebraic equation is satisfied by the dynamic system even for inconsistent initial conditions and for all time thereafter. This paper is concerned with a study of an operator split scheme and unsplit scheme for the computation of adiabatic freely propagating one-dimensional premixed flames. The study uses unsteady method for both split and unsplit schemes employing implicit chemistry and explicit diffusion, a combination which is stable and convergent. Solution scheme is not sensitive to the initial starting estimate and provides steady state even with straight line profiles (far from steady state) in small number of time steps. Two systems H2-Air and H2-NO (involving complex nitrogen chemistry) are considered in presentinvestigation. Careful comparison shows that the operator split approach is slightly superior than the unsplit when chemistry becomes complex. Comparison of computational times with those of existing steady and unsteady methods seems to suggest that the method employing implicit-explicit algorithm is very efficient and robust.

In this paper we give a generalized predictor-corrector algorithm for solving ordinary differential equations with specified initial values. The method uses multiple correction steps which can be carried out in parallel with a prediction step. The proposed method gives a larger stability interval compared to the existing parallel predictor-corrector methods. A method has been suggested to implement the algorithm in multiple processor systems with efficient utilization of all the processors.

Several lines of evidence suggest that cancer progression is associated with up-regulation or reactivation of telomerase and the underlying mechanism remains an active area of research. The heterotrimeric MRN complex, consisting of Mre11, Rad50 and Nbs1, which is required for the repair of double-strand breaks, plays a key role in telomere length maintenance. In this study, we show significant differences in the levels of expression of MRN complex subunits among various cancer cells and somatic cells. Notably, siRNA-mediated depletion of any of the subunits of MRN complex led to complete ablation of other subunits of the complex. Treatment of leukemia and prostate cancer cells with etoposide lead to increased expression of MRN complex subunits, with concomitant decrease in the levels of telomerase activity, compared to breast cancer cells. These studies raise the possibility of developing anti-cancer drugs targeting MRN complex subunits to sensitize a subset of cancer cells to radio- and/or chemotherapy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics of poly(3-methylthiophene) devices show a negative differential resistance (NDR) at room temperature with a large peak to valley current ratio (similar to 507). This NDR can be tuned by two orders of magnitude by controlling the carrier density due to the variation of the space-charge region in the device. The temperature and scan rate dependent J-V measurements infer that the NDR is mainly driven by the trapping and de-trapping of carriers. The photo-generation of carriers is observed to reduce the NDR effect.

We prove the spectral invariance of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-P(R-n), 1 < p < infinity, by using the equivalence of ellipticity and Fredholmness of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-p(R-n), 1 < p < infinity. A key ingredient in the proof is the spectral invariance of SC pseudo-differential operators on L-2(R-n).

Negative differential resistance (NDR) in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and apparent colossal electroresistance were observed in Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 single crystals at low temperatures. The continuous dc I-V measurements showed a marked thermal drift. In addition, temperature of the sample surface was found to be significantly higher than that of the base at high applied currents. Two different strategies namely estimation and diminution of the Joule heating (pulsed I-V measurements) were employed to investigate its role in the electric transport properties. Our experiments reveal that the NDR in Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 is a consequence of Joule heating rather than the melting of charge order. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3486221]

This paper proposes a differential evolution based method of improving the performance of conventional guidance laws at high heading errors, without resorting to techniques from optimal control theory, which are complicated and suffer from several limitations. The basic guidance law is augmented with a term that is a polynomial function of the heading error. The values of the coefficients of the polynomial are found by applying the differential evolution algorithm. The results are compared with the basic guidance law, and the all-aspect proportional navigation laws in the literature. A scheme for online implementation of the proposed law for application in practice is also given. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Combat games are studied as bicriterion differential games with qualitative outcomes determined by threshold values on the criterion functions. Survival and capture strategies of the players are defined using the notion of security levels. Closest approach survival strategies (CASS) and minimum risk capture strategies (MRCS) are important strategies for the players identified as solutions to four optimization problems involving security levels. These are used, in combination with the preference orderings of the qualitative outcomes by the players, to delineate the win regions and the secured draw and mutual kill regions for the players. It is shown that the secured draw regions and the secured mutual kill regions for the two players are not necessarily the same. Simple illustrative examples are given.

We consider numerical solutions of nonlinear multiterm fractional integrodifferential equations, where the order of the highest derivative is fractional and positive but is otherwise arbitrary. Here, we extend and unify our previous work, where a Galerkin method was developed for efficiently approximating fractional order operators and where elements of the present differential algebraic equation (DAE) formulation were introduced. The DAE system developed here for arbitrary orders of the fractional derivative includes an added block of equations for each fractional order operator, as well as forcing terms arising from nonzero initial conditions. We motivate and explain the structure of the DAE in detail. We explain how nonzero initial conditions should be incorporated within the approximation. We point out that our approach approximates the system and not a specific solution. Consequently, some questions not easily accessible to solvers of initial value problems, such as stability analyses, can be tackled using our approach. Numerical examples show excellent accuracy. This thesis is concerned with the area of vector-valued Harmonic Analysis, where the central theme is to determine how results from classical Harmonic Analysis generalize to functions with values in an infinite dimensional Banach space. The work consists of three articles and an introduction. The first article studies the Rademacher maximal function that was originally defined by T. Hytönen, A. McIntosh and P. Portal in 2008 in order to prove a vector-valued version of Carleson's embedding theorem. The boundedness of the corresponding maximal operator on Lebesgue-(Bochner) -spaces defines the RMF-property of the range space. It is shown that the RMF-property is equivalent to a weak type inequality, which does not depend for instance on the integrability exponent, hence providing more flexibility for the RMF-property. The second article, which is written in collaboration with T. Hytönen, studies a vector-valued Carleson's embedding theorem with respect to filtrations. An earlier proof of the dyadic version assumed that the range space satisfies a certain geometric type condition, which this article shows to be also necessary. The third article deals with a vector-valued generalizations of tent spaces, originally defined by R. R. Coifman, Y. Meyer and E. M. Stein in the 80's, and concerns especially the ones related to square functions. A natural assumption on the range space is then the UMD-property. The main result is an atomic decomposition for tent spaces with integrability exponent one. In order to suit the stochastic integrals appearing in the vector-valued formulation, the proof is based on a geometric lemma for cones and differs essentially from the classical proof. Vector-valued tent spaces have also found applications in functional calculi for bisectorial operators. In the introduction these three themes come together when studying paraproduct operators for vector-valued functions. The Rademacher maximal function and Carleson's embedding theorem were applied already by Hytönen, McIntosh and Portal in order to prove boundedness for the dyadic paraproduct operator on Lebesgue-Bochner -spaces assuming that the range space satisfies both UMD- and RMF-properties. Whether UMD implies RMF is thus an interesting question. Tent spaces, on the other hand, provide a method to study continuous time paraproduct operators, although the RMF-property is not yet understood in the framework of tent spaces.
