It is a commonplace that the labour movement was somehow nurtured within the witness for liberty of the Free Churches. Exploring this at a range of levels - including organisation, rhetoric, policies, electoral politics and people - this book demonstrates the extent to which this remained a reality into the inter-war years. The distinctive religious setting in which it emerged indeed helps to explain the differences between Labour and more Marxist counterparts on the Continent. It is shown here that this setting continued to influence Labour approaches towards welfare, nationalisation and industrial relations between the wars. In the process Labour also adopted some of the righteousness of tone of the Free Churches. This setting was, however, changing. Dropping their traditional suspicion of the State, Nonconformists instead increasingly invested it with religious values, turning it through its growing welfare functions into the provider of practical Christianity. This nationalisation of religion continues to shape British attitudes to the welfare state as well as imposing narrowly utilitarian and material tests of relevance upon the churches and other social institutions. The elevation of the State was not, however, intended as an end in itself. What mattered were the social and individual outcomes. Socialism, for those Free Churchmen and women who helped to shape Labour in the early twentieth century, was about improving society as much as systems.

The renewed interest in analytical psychology by academics working in the humanities has led to the emergence of a post-Jungian field of cultural criticism, at the theoretical core of which stands Jung's theory of symbolism. This article examines the centrality of symbolism to both Freud and Jung's psychology and explains how the differing concepts of the symbol lead to their divergent theories of interpretation in psychology and art criticism. Acknowledging the advantages of Jung's more expansive account of the symbol, it argues that Walter Benjamin's critical engagement with Jung nonetheless provides a useful correction to the problematic conservatism inherent to his concept of the symbol and its contemporary application.

After the horrors of the First World War a dialogue began between European statesmen seeking some form of European integration as a way of achieving lasting peace. During the inter-war period this idea started to attract support in Britain even though Britain's strategic and economic interests remained focused outside Europe. This book explores Britain's relations with the continent between 1918 and 1945, focussing on diplomatic and military responses to the major crises and examining attitudes to the idea of Europe in the broader context of relations with the Empire, Commonwealth and the USA.

The following discussion is intended as a critical intervention into recent debates about the “crisis of the humanities,” reading the symptomaticity of crisis in the medical sense of a turning point. It does so from the perspective of the work of Walter Benjamin, whose own transdisciplinary practice of thought has been characterized as a “philosophy directed against philosophy” and a “philosophizing beyond philosophy,” and stands as a model for the kind of intellectual and para-academic activity evoked here. Historically re-situating Benjamin’s famous allegory of the Angel of History from the twentieth-century context of the “crisis of culture” to the contemporary “crisis of education,” it attempts to reconstruct a dialectical understanding of pedagogization within Benjamin’s work, which is used to sketch out the contours of a critically reimagined pedagogy of the Inhumanities.

Although modern systems of mass education are typically defined in their opposition to violence, it has been argued that it is only through an insistent and critical focus upon violence that radical thought can be sustained. This article seeks to take up this challenge in relation to Walter Benjamin’s lesser-known writings on education. Benjamin retained throughout his life a deep suspicion about academic institutions and about the pedagogic, social and economic violence implicated in the idea of cultural transmission. He nonetheless remained committed to the possibility of another kind of revolutionary potential inherent to true education and, when he comes to speak of this in his Critique of Violence, it is remarkable that he describes it as manifesting an educative violence. This article argues that Benjamin’s philosophy works toward a critique of educative violence that results in a distinction between a ‘first’ and ‘second’ kind of education and asks whether destruction might have a positive role to play within pedagogical theories in contrast to current valorisations of creativity and productivity.

Portugal hosted in the last thirteen years, two editions of the event European Cultural Capital; this paper intends to illustrate the coverage that Portuguese newspapers (daily newspapers Público, Diário de Notícias, Correio da Manhã and Jornal de Notícias, a weekly newsmagazine Visão and a weekly newspaper Expresso) made, through referrals in front-page and respective developments within the editions, to each of the events and that allows us to define the main moments that marked each of them, patterns of action, the major players, planning and programming types. The European Cultural Capital project elects, from year to year, cities of different EU member states with the main goal of “contributing to bring together the Europe´s people" (words of Mélina Mercouri, Greek Minister of Culture who, in 1985, proposed the launch of this initiative) and encouraging the elected urban space to present new cultural paradigms. In the genesis of this model is the cultural decentralization’s vector, a possibility to medium-sized cities of funding public works, restoring heritage and promoting themselves in touristic terms, of giving visibility to cities away from cultural and creative industries’ major distribution centers. A crucial factor to achieve this goal is media coverage. This paper outline the information that the Portuguese press ran over the two years that elapsed the latest editions of the European Cultural Capital in Portugal, namely that media coverage have deviated from the disclosure of the events’ schedule to suggest itineraries of visit and little or not even question the role that cities, promoting such initiatives, have as places of innovation in terms of cultural policies, artistic production and innovation, in urban and environmental regeneration, in economic revitalization, in training and creating new artists and new audiences and in boosting the confidence of local communities. The content analysis performed to articles shows how press is essential to the promotion of cities as cultural/touristic destinations as it stimulates consumption among residents and attracts visitors, with the possible dire consequence of turning the cultural journalist into an agent of touristic instead of cultural promotion.

O presente trabalho procura enquadrar a participação portuguesa na Grande Guerra à luz das variações da política interna. A entrada de Portugal na Grande Guerra foi sempre polémica e não mereceu o unanimismo que se verificou na maioria dos países beligerantes. Desde muito cedo, a sociedade portuguesa dividiu-se entre os que eram a favor da participação portuguesa na guerra e os que eram contra. A acrescer a estas divisões políticas juntamos as dificuldades de um país pobre e atrasado em participar na guerra mais desenvolvida e mortífera de sempre: nomeadamente as questões logísticas do treino, transporte e manutenção de um contingente militar a combater num país estrangeiro. A situação do nosso contingente enviado para a França (C.E.P.) foi piorando gradualmente, pois a falta de apoio político traduziu-se na incapacidade de substituir as tropas em combate. Chegados a Abril de 1918, o C.E.P. foi atacado e vencido pelo exército alemão, tendo, para todos os efeitos acabado enquanto força autónoma de combate. A derrota de La Lys, foi, contudo, transformada numa grande jornada de «valor» e «coragem» do soldado português. Na criação, ampliação e divulgação do «mito» de La Lys, que atravessou três regimes políticos (I República, Ditadura Militar e Estado Novo), a imprensa teve um papel crucial, em particular nos anos que medeiam entre o final da guerra e o início da década de 40 do século XX.

O objeto de estudo desta dissertação são as entidades ministeriais tutelares da agricultura entre 1918 e 2013. As razões desta escolha prendem-se com o facto de estas serem entidades cuja produção documental e património arquivístico são fundamentais para a compreensão e estudo do sector primário da economia nacional durante todo o século XX até ao momento presente. Foi primeiramente realizado o estudo orgânico-funcional das entidades ministeriais, efetuado com base na sua legislação de criação, remodelação, fusão e extinção e que possibilitou a identificação da quantidade, natureza, duração e estrutura de cada uma delas. Tal estudo permitiu a identificação de 17 entidades ministeriais e a confirmação de que todas estas entidades reuniam as condições necessárias para serem consideradas produtoras de fundos documentais da Administração Pública Portuguesa, logo que todas podiam ser objeto de criação de Registos de Autoridade Arquivística. Os estudos orgânico-funcionais realizados foram então canalizados para a criação de um total de 17 Registos de Autoridade Arquivística, feitos com base no modelo do Ficheiro Nacional de Autoridades Arquivísticas (FNAA) e seguindo os princípios estabelecidos pelas normas internacionais do Conselho Internacional de Arquivos (ISAAR-CPF), bem como os estabelecidos pelas Orientações para a Descrição Arquivística. Ao utilizar o modelo do FNAA, a presente proposta tem como objetivos: identificar univocamente cada uma das entidades ministeriais estudadas enquanto autoridades arquivísticas produtoras de fundos documentais; identificar e mapear o seu percurso institucional e administrativo; facilitar a reunião intelectual da documentação produzida por estas entidades. A proposta apresentada nesta dissertação pretendeu assim articular o paradigma custodial atual, com as possibilidades trazidas pela mudança para um paradigma pós-custodial e potenciadas pelas tecnologias de informação (das quais o FNAA constitui o modelo nacional atualmente na vanguarda). Com isto espera-se poder contribuir para o módulo de entidades produtoras (MEP) do FNAA, nomeadamente na sua vertente de criação de registos para organizações (extintas) da Administração Pública.
