Purpose: Selecting artificial teeth for edentulous patients is difficult when pre-extraction records are not available. Various guidelines have been suggested for determining the width of the maxillary anterior denture teeth. This study was undertaken to evaluate the use of the nasal width as a guide for the selection of proper width maxillary anterior denture teeth in four racial groups of the Brazilian population. Materials and Methods: One hundred and sixty subjects (40 Whites, 40 Mulattos, 40 Blacks, and 40 Asians) were selected. Using a sliding caliper, the nasal width and the intercanine distance were measured. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the above measurements. A prediction was made of the percentage of subjects of the White, Mulatto, Black, and Asian populations in which the selection error due to the clinical application of the method of the nasal width would be within 0 to 2 mm, within 2 to 4 mm, and greater than 4 mm. Results: The four racial groups showed a weak correlation between the intercanine distance and the nasal width. In 39.7% of the White, 55.7% of the Mulatto, 81.9% of the Black, and 48.2% of the Asian populations, errors greater than 4 mm would be present with the use of the nasal width. Conclusions: The correlation found between the intercanine distance and the nasal width was not high enough to be used as a predictive factor. The relationship between natural tooth width and artificial tooth width as predicted by the nasal width showed that the nasal width method is not accurate for all the studied groups. A total of 640 one-day-old male Cobb chicks were used to evaluate the effects of early feed restriction and glutamine on villi density and tip surface of enterocytes in the small intestine of broilers. A two-factor factorial experimental design with glutamine and feed restriction as main factors was used. Treatments consisted of quantitative feed restriction at 30% of ad libitum intake from 7 to 14 days of age, and glutamine addition at 1% in the diet from 1 to 28 days of age. Sections of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) were collected at 14 and 21 days of age for analyses by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Villi density decreased with age and increased in cranial-caudal direction. Glutamine increased villi density in the small intestine. Microvilli density and height decreased with age. Glutamine increased microvilli width. The jejunum was the segment with the largest surface area of the tip of the enterocytes, followed by the duodenum and the ileum. Feed restriction decreased the surface area of the tip of the enterocytes in the small intestine at 14 and at 21 days of age. Glutamine supplemented in the feed increased the surface area of the tip of the enterocytes of the jejunum and ileum at 21 days of age. © Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2007.

Nasal polyps are a clinical sign of alert for investigating Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Aims: To study the incidence of nasal polyps in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis, its possible association with age, gender, clinical manifestations, genotype and sweat chlorine level, and its evolution with topical steroid therapy. Methods: Clinical symptoms, sweat chlorine level and genotype were studied in 23 cystic fibrosis patients. Nasal polyps were diagnosed by nasal endoscopy and treated with topical steroids during 6 months, followed by a second nasal endoscopy. Fisher test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Nasal polyps were found in 39.1% of the patients (five bilateral, four unilateral), all older than six years, recurrent pneumonia in 82.6%, pancreatic insufficiency in 87% and malnutrition in 74%. No association was seen between nasal polyps and sweat chlorine level, genotype, clinical sings of severity and nasal symptoms. Seven patients improved in their nasal polyps with topical steroids, six showed complete resolution. Conclusion: The study showed a high incidence of nasal polyps in older children, who span the entire range of clinical severity, even in the absence of clinical nasal symptoms. Topical steroid therapy showed good results. An interaction among pediatricians and otolaryngologists is necessary for diagnosis and follow-up. 2008 © Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia. Surgical defects of the alar lobule can be difficult to repair with functional and aesthetically desirable results. Skin grafts are smoother and paler than the nasal skin. Flaps from the cheek and proximal nose can bridge the alar crease, resulting in obstruction. The authors describe a technique to repair nasal ala defects, with maintenance of the cosmetic unit, without airflow disturbance.

This study compared the sampling efficacy cia cytobrush and metal spatula for exfoliative cytology of the oral mucosa. Thirty students with no detectable oral alterations upon clinical examination were submitted to exfoliative cytology of the lateral border of the tongue, using a metal spatula on the left side and a cytobrush on the right side. The smears were stained using the Papanicoiaou technique and evaluated for cellularity, cell type, cell distribution, homogeneity, and cellular distortion, as well as the presence ol mucus, inflammatory infiltrate, and hemorrhage. A statistical test (Z-test) with a 95% confdence interval (Cl) showed a significant difference between the metal spatula and cytobrush in terms of cellularity (p = 0.02) and homogeneity (p = 0.01). No difference between the two methods was observed regarding cell type (p = 0.4, Z-test) or cell distribution for the 95% confidence interval (p = 0.2, Fisher's test). Cell distortion and the presence of mucus were observed in five cases that used the metal spatula and in two cases that used the cytobrush. No hemorrhage or inflammatory infItrate was detected in any of the slides. Based on the results of this study, the cytobrush produced qualitatively better smears in terms of cellularity and homogeneity compared to the metal spatula.

Purpose: To establish an experimental model of traumatic ulcer in rat cheek mucosa for utilization in future alternative therapy studies. Methods: A total of 60 adult male rats (250 - 300g) were used. Ulceration of the left cheek mucosa was provoked by abrasion using a n o 15 scalpel blade. The animals were observed for 10 days, during which they were weighed and their ulcers were measured. The histological characteristics were analyzed and scored according to the ulcer phase. In the statistical analysis, a value of p<0.01 was considered a statistically significant response in all cases. Results: During the five first days, the animals lost weight (Student t test, p<0.01). The ulcerated area receded linearly over time and was almost completely cicatrized after 10 days (ANOVA, Tendency post-test, p<0.0001). Groups on days 1, 2 and 3 days displayed similar results, but a decrease in scores were observed after the 4th day. Conclusion: The proposed cheek mucosa ulcer model in rats can be considered an efficient, low-cost, reliable, and reproducible method.

Patients with congenital malformations, traumatic or pathological mutilation and maxillofacial developmental disorders can be restored aesthetically and emotionally by the production and use of facial prostheses. The aim of this study was to review the literature about the retention and processing methods of facial prostheses, and discuss their characteristics. A literature review on Medline (PubMed) database was performed by using the keywords maxillofacial prosthesis, silicone, resin, pigment, cosmetic, prosthetic nose, based on articles published from 1956 to 2010. Several methods of retention, from adhesives to the placement of implants, and different processing methods such as laser, CAD/CAM and rapid prototyping technologies have been reported. There are advantages and disadvantages of each procedure, and none can be classified as better compared to others.

The lectin Artin M has been shown to accelerate the wound-healing process. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of Artin M on wound healing in the palatal mucosa of rats and to investigate the effects of Artin M on transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion by rat gingival fibroblasts. A surgical wound was created on the palatal mucosa of 72 rats divided into three groups according to treatment: C - Control (nontreated), A - Artin M gel, and V - Vehicle. Eight animals per group were sacrificed at 3, 5, and 7 days postsurgery for histology, immunohistochemistry and determination of the levels of cytokines, and growth factors. Gingival fibroblasts were incubated with 2.5 μg/mL of Artin M for 24, 48, and 72 hours. The expression of VEGF and TGF-β was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Histologically, at day 7, the Artin M group showed earlier reepithelialization, milder inflammatory infiltration, and increased collagen fiber formation, resulting in faster maturation of granular tissue than in the other groups (p < 0.05). Artin M-induced cell proliferation in vivo and promoted a greater expression of TGF-β and VEGF in both experiments (p < 0.05). Artin M was effective in healing oral mucosa wounds in rats and was associated with increased TGF-β and VEGF release, cell proliferation, reepithelialization, and collagen deposition and arrangement of fibers. © 2013 by the Wound Healing Society.

Objectives: Describe a new case of keratocyst of the buccal mucosa and compare its immunohistochemical features with 13 sporadic intraosseous keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOT). Case Report and Study Design: A male complaining about an enlargement on the left buccal mucosa was referred to the Stomatology Clinic. Clinical examination revealed a solitary nodule posterior to the parotid papilla. An excisional biopsy was performed following clinical diagnosis of epidermoid cyst. Microscopically, the lesion was characterized by a lining of five cell layers, with columnar basal cells and a corrugated parakeratinized surface. Immunohistochemical reactions for PTCH-1, Smo, Shh, mTOR, bcl-2, Ck17, and Ck19 were performed. PTCH-1 was not expressed in the keratocyst of the buccal mucosa, but was observed in suprabasal layers of eight (61.5%) cases of sporadic intraosseous KOT. Shh, mTOR, bcl-2, Ck17, and Ck19 expression was observed in all the cases investigated. Conclusions: The morphology and immunoprofile of this lesion are similar to sporadic intraosseous KOT. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Objective: To investigate the influence of the presence or absence of keratinized mucosa on the alveolar bony crest level as it relates to different buccal marginal bone thicknesses. Material and methods: In six beagle dogs, the mandibular premolars and first molars were extracted bilaterally. In the right side of the mandible (test), flaps were elevated, and the buccal as well as part of the lingual masticatory mucosa was removed. The flap was released coronally to allow a primary wound closure. In the left side, the wounds were left unsutured with the keratinized mucosa remaining (control). After 3 months of healing, a complete absence of keratinized mucosa was found at the test sites. Two recipient sites were prepared at each side of the mandible, one in the premolar and one in the molar region. A buccal bony ridge width of approximately 1 and 2 mm was obtained at the premolar and molar region, respectively. Implants were installed with the shoulder flush with the buccal alveolar bony crest, and abutments were connected to allow a nonsubmerged healing. At least 2 mm of keratinized mucosa was surrounding the control sites, while at the test sites, the implants were bordered by alveolar mucosa. After 3 months, the animals were euthanized and ground sections obtained. Results: A higher vertical bony crest resorption was observed at the test compared with the control sites both at the premolar and molar regions, the differences being statistically significant. The top of the peri-implant mucosa was located more coronally at the control compared with the test sites. The horizontal resorption measured 1 mm below the implant shoulder was similar at the test and control sites. Only limited differences were found between premolar and molar sites, with the exclusion of the horizontal resorption that was higher at the test compared with the control sites. Conclusions: A higher alveolar buccal bony crest resorption and a more apical soft tissue marginal position should be expected, when implants are surrounded with thin alveolar mucosa at the time of installation, independently of the thickness of the buccal bony crest. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

Diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] is a herbicide that induced urothelial tumors in the urinary bladder of Wistar rats fed 2500. ppm during a long-term study. The currently suggested non-genotoxic mode of action (MOA) of diuron encompasses in succession urothelial necrosis induced by direct cytotoxicity, regenerative cell proliferation and sustained urothelial hyperplasia that increases the likelihood of neoplasia development. This study evaluated the dose-response profile of urothelial histological and ultrastructural lesions induced by diuron. Sixty male Wistar rats were fed ad libitum diuron mixed in the diet at 0, 60, 125, 500, 1250, or 2500. ppm for 20 weeks. The incidences of urothelial simple hyperplasia and the cell proliferation index were significantly increased in the diuron-fed 1250 and 2500. ppm groups. By scanning electron microscopy, the incidences and severity of lesions were significantly increased in the 500 and 1250. ppm groups. The incidences of urothelial hyperplasia in the kidney pelvis were significantly increased in the 500, 1250 and 2500. ppm groups. The present study documents the dose-response influence of diuron on the rat urothelium, with a no observed effect level (NOEL) at 125. ppm; 1250. ppm was as effective as 2500. ppm at inducing urothelial lesions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This study is the first to evaluate the occurrence of several Mollicutes species in Brazilian capuchin monkeys (Cebus spp.). Mollicutes were detected by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in samples of the oropharyngeal, conjuctiva, and genital mucosae of 58 monkeys. In the oropharynx, Mollicutes in general (generic PCR to the Class), and those of the genus Ureaplasma (genus PCR), were detected in 72.4% and 43.0% of the samples, respectively. The identified species in this site included: Mycoplasma arginini (43.1%), M. salivarium (41.4%), and M. pneumoniae (19.0%). Both Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma are genera of the order Mycoplasmatales. In the preputial/vaginal mucosa, PCR detected Mollicutes in general in 27.58% of the samples, the genus Ureaplasma in 32.7%, the species M. arginini in 8.6%, and Acholeplasma laidlawii of the order Acholeplasmatales in 1.7% In the conjunctiva, Mollicutes in general were detected in 29.3% of the samples, with 1.7% being identified as A. laidlawii. Culturing was difficult due to contamination, but two isolates were successfully obtained. The Mollicutes species of this study provided new insights into these bacteria in Brazilian Cebus. Studies are lacking of the actual risk of Mollicutes infection or the frequency at which primates serve as permanent or temporary reservoirs for Mollicutes. In the present study, the samples were collected from monkeys without clinical signs of infection. The mere presence of Mollicutes, particularly those also found in humans, nevertheless signals a need for studies to evaluate the impact of these microorganisms on the health of non-human primates (NHPs) and the possibility of cross-species transmission between NHPs and humans. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
