The upper 38 m of Hole 722B sediments (Owen Ridge, northwest Arabian Sea) was sampled at 20 cm intervals and used to develop records of lithogenic percent, mass accumulation rate, and grain size spanning the past 1 m.y. Over this interval, the lithogenic component of Owen Ridge sediments can be used to infer variability in the strength of Arabian Sea summer monsoon winds (median grain size) and the aridity of surrounding dust source-areas (mass accumulation rate; MAR in g/cm**2/k.y). The lithogenic MAR has strong 100, 41, and 23 k.y. cyclicities and is forced primarily by changes in source-area aridity associated with glacial-interglacial cycles. The lithogenic grain size, on the other hand, exhibits higher frequency variability (23 k.y.) and is forced by the strength of summer monsoon winds which, in turn, are forced by the effective sensible heating of the Indian-Asian landmass and by the availability of latent heat from the Southern Hemisphere Indian Ocean. These forcing mechanisms combine to produce a wind-strength record which has no strong relationship to glacial-interglacial cycles. Discussion of the mechanisms responsible for production of primary Milankovitch cyclicities in lithogenic records from the Owen Ridge is presented elsewhere (Clemens and Prell, 1990, doi:10.1029/PA005i002p00109). Here we examine the 1 m.y. record from Hole 722B focusing on different aspects of the lithogenic components including an abrupt change in the monsoon wind-strength record at 500 k.y., core-to-core reproducibility, comparison with magnetic susceptibility, coherency with a wind-strength record from the Pacific Ocean, and combination frequencies in the wind-strength record. The Hole 722B lithogenic grain-size record shows an abrupt change at 500 k.y. possibly indicating decreased monsoon wind-strength over the interval from 500 k.y. to present. The grain-size decrease appears to be coincident with a loss of spectral power near the 41 k.y. periodicity. However, the grain-size decrease is not paralleled in the Globigerina bulloides upwelling record, an independent record of summer monsoon wind-strength (Prell, this volume). These observations leave us with competing hypotheses possibly involving: (1) a decrease in the sensitivity of monsoon windstrength to obliquity forcing, (2) decoupling of the grain size and G. bulloides records via a decoupling of the nutrient supply from wind-driven upwelling, and/or (3) a change in dust source-area or the patterns of dust transporting winds. Comparison of the lithogenic grain size and weight percent records from Hole 722B with those from a nearby core shows that the major and most minor events are well replicated. These close matches establish our confidence in the lithogenic extraction techniques and measurements. Further, reproducibility on a core-to-core scale indicates that the eolian depositional signal is regionally strong, coherent, and well preserved. The lithogenic weight percent and magnetic susceptibility are extremely well correlated in both the time and frequency domains. From this we infer that the magnetically susceptible component of Owen Ridge sediments is of terrestrial origin and transported to the Owen Ridge via summer monsoon winds. Because of the high correlation with the lithogenic percent record, the magnetic susceptibility record can be cast in terms of lithogenic MAR and used as a high resolution proxy for continental aridity. In addition to primary Milankovitch periodicities, the Hole 722B grain-size record exhibits periodicity at 52 k.y. and at 29 k.y. Both periodicities are also found in the grain-size record from piston core RC11-210 in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Comparison of the two grain-size records shows significant coherence and zero phase relationships over both the 52 and 29 k.y. periodicities suggesting that the strengths of the Indian Ocean monsoon and the Pacific southeasterly trade winds share common forcing mechanisms. Two possible origins for the 52 and 29 k.y. periodicities in the Hole 722B wind-strength record are (1) direct Milankovitch forcing (54 and 29 k.y. components of obliquity) and (2) combination periodicities resulting from nonlinear interactions within the climate system. We find that the 52 and 29 k.y. periodicities show stronger coherency with crossproducts of eccentricity and obliquity (29 k.y.) and precession and obliquity (52 k.y.) than with direct obliquity forcing. Our working hypothesis attributes these periodicities to nonlinear interaction between external insolation forcing and internal climatic feedback mechanisms involving an interdependence of continental snow/ice-mass (albedo) and the hydrological cycle (latent heat availability).

Recent advances in the chronology and the palaeoclimatic understanding of Antarctic ice core records point towards a larger heterogeneity of latitudinal climate fluctuations than previously thought. Thus, realistic palaeoclimate reconstructions rely in the development of a tight array of well-constrained records with a dense latitudinal coverage. Climatic records from southernmost South America are critical cornerstones to link these Antarctic palaeoclimatic archives with their South American counterparts. At 54° S on the Island of Tierra del Fuego, Lago Fagnano is located in one of the most substantially and extensively glaciated regions of southernmost South America during the Late Pleistocene. This elongated lake is the largest (~110km long) and non-ice covered lake at high southern latitudes. A multi-proxy study of selected cores allows the characterisation of a Holocene sedimentary record. Detailed petrophysical, sedimentological and geochemical studies of a complete lacustrine laminated sequence reveal variations in major and trace elements, as well as organic content, suggesting high variability in environmental conditions. Comparison of these results with other regional records allows the identification of major known late Holocene climatic intervals and the proposal for a time for the onset of the Southern Westerlies in Tierra del Fuego. These results improve our understanding of the forcing mechanisms behind climate change in southernmost Patagonia.

Palynomorphs were studied in samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 189, Holes 1172A and 1172D (East Tasman Plateau; 2620 m water depth). Besides organic walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts), broad categories of other palynomorphs were quantified in terms of relative abundance. In this contribution, we provide an overview of the dinocyst distribution from the Maastrichtian to lowermost Oligocene and Quaternary intervals and illustrate main trends in palynomorph distribution. The uppermost Cretaceous-lowermost Oligocene succession of Site 1172 has a confident biomagnetostratigraphy, enabling us to tie early Paleogene Southern Hemisphere dinocyst events to the geomagnetic polarity timescale for the first time. Dinocyst species from the Maastrichtian to earliest Oligocene at Site 1172 are largely endemic ("Transantarctic Flora") or bipolar; cosmopolitan taxa are present in the background as well. The Maastrichtian-early late Eocene dinocyst assemblages are indicative of shallow-marine to restricted marine, pro-deltaic conditions, closely tied to a massive siliciclastic sequence. By middle late Eocene times (~35.5 Ma), the siliciclastic sequence gave way to a thin glauconitic unit, considered to reflect the deepening of the Tasmanian Gateway. This transition coincides with the most prominent change in dinocyst associations of the Paleogene. The turnover is inferred to reflect a change from marginal marine to more offshore conditions, with increased winnowing and oxidation. Overlying pelagic carbonate ooze of middle early Oligocene and younger age is virtually barren of organic microfossils, although Quaternary assemblages have been recovered. This aspect is taken to reflect average low sedimentation rates and well-oxygenated water masses during most of the Oligocene and Neogene. The few palynologically productive samples from the Oligocene-Quaternary interval have a stronger cosmopolitan to subtropical signature, with warm-water species being common to abundant.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 169S retrieved a complete Holocene sequence from Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada. Fish and diatom remains were extracted from sediments at Site 1034. Very small fish bones, teeth and scales were ubiquitous except in the lowermost glaciomarine clays; scales degraded with depth. In the identifiable fraction, Pacific herring were the most abundant with Pacific hake and cartilaginous fish yielding significant fractions. Fish remains appear just before 12 000 BP but greatest diversity does not occur until about 6500 BP. A smoothed abundance curve highlights two periods of maximal abundance at about 1500 and 6500 BP. Abundances in the last 1000 years are lower than the rest of the record. A correlation with abundances of seven phytoplankton taxa is significant; diatoms explain about a third of the variance. This study demonstrates the use of fish and diatoms from the same paleosedimentary matrix to examine millennia-scale correlations between primary and tertiary production.

The main tasks of this study were (1) identification of minerals of the clay fraction, (2) identification of clay-mineral associations in relation to stratigraphic intervals, and (3) elucidation of genetic relations of clay minerals with types of sediments and factors of sedimentation. Identification of clay minerals was carried out mainly with an X-ray diffractometer (DRON-I). X-ray diffractograms were prepared by means of CuKalpha radiation, at 35 kW and a current of 20 ma. The scanning rate was 2°/min. Oriented specimens were prepared for the <1-µm fraction (and partly for the <10-µm fraction because of insufficient core material) in three states: air-dried, saturated with glycerine, and heated at 550°C.

To assess the paleoceanographic potential of Leg 186 sediments, we investigated Quaternary calcareous nannofossil flora at Sites 1150 and 1151 in the Japan Trench. Because of the frequent occurrence of barren intervals and the lack of oxygen isotope data, a detailed paleoceanography is not feasible for these cores. We limited our study to the upper 26.07 m of the section from Hole 1150A and the upper 21.01 m of the section from Hole 1151C. The studied samples from Cores 186-1150A-1H through 3H are younger than 0.085 Ma. Core 186-1151C-1H (upper 1.92 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) is younger than 0.085 Ma, and samples between 2H-7, 5-7 cm, and 3H-CC, 5-7 cm, (9.99-21.01 mbsf) are older than 0.245 Ma and younger than 0.408 Ma.

Scaling is becoming an increasingly important topic in the earth and environmental sciences as researchers attempt to understand complex natural systems through the lens of an ever-increasing set of methods and scales. The guest editors introduce the papers in this issue’s special section and present an overview of some of the work being done. Scaling remains one of the most challenging topics in earth and environmental sciences, forming a basis for our understanding of process development across the multiple scales that make up the subsurface environment. Tremendous progress has been made in discovery, explanation, and applications of scaling. And yet much more needs to be done and is being done as part of the modern quest to quantify, analyze, and manage the complexity of natural systems. Understanding and succinct representation of scaling properties can unveil underlying relationships between system structure and response functions, improve parameterization of natural variability and heterogeneity, and help us address societal needs by effectively merging knowledge acquired at different scales.

In the current uncertain context that affects both the world economy and the energy sector, with the rapid increase in the prices of oil and gas and the very unstable political situation that affects some of the largest raw materials’ producers, there is a need for developing efficient and powerful quantitative tools that allow to model and forecast fossil fuel prices, CO2 emission allowances prices as well as electricity prices. This will improve decision making for all the agents involved in energy issues. Although there are papers focused on modelling fossil fuel prices, CO2 prices and electricity prices, the literature is scarce on attempts to consider all of them together. This paper focuses on both building a multivariate model for the aforementioned prices and comparing its results with those of univariate ones, in terms of prediction accuracy (univariate and multivariate models are compared for a large span of days, all in the first 4 months in 2011) as well as extracting common features in the volatilities of the prices of all these relevant magnitudes. The common features in volatility are extracted by means of a conditionally heteroskedastic dynamic factor model which allows to solve the curse of dimensionality problem that commonly arises when estimating multivariate GARCH models. Additionally, the common volatility factors obtained are useful for improving the forecasting intervals and have a nice economical interpretation. Besides, the results obtained and methodology proposed can be useful as a starting point for risk management or portfolio optimization under uncertainty in the current context of energy markets.

We study the timing and spectral properties of the low-magnetic field, transient magnetar SWIFT J1822.3−1606 as it approached quiescence. We coherently phase-connect the observations over a time-span of ∼500 d since the discovery of SWIFT J1822.3−1606 following the Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) trigger on 2011 July 14, and carried out a detailed pulse phase spectroscopy along the outburst decay. We follow the spectral evolution of different pulse phase intervals and find a phase and energy-variable spectral feature, which we interpret as proton cyclotron resonant scattering of soft photon from currents circulating in a strong (≳1014 G) small-scale component of the magnetic field near the neutron star surface, superimposed to the much weaker (∼3 × 1013 G) magnetic field. We discuss also the implications of the pulse-resolved spectral analysis for the emission regions on the surface of the cooling magnetar.

The aim of this article is to compare the Suzuki and BAPNE methods based on bibliography published for both approaches. In the field of musical and instrumental education and especially for the childhood stage, the correct use of the body and voice are of fundamental importance. These two methods differ from one another; one principally musical and instrumental, which is the Suzuki method, and one non-musical, the BAPNE method, which aims at stimulating attention, concentration, memory and the executing function of the pupil through music and body percussion. Comparing different approaches may provide teachers with a useful insight for facing different issues related to their discipline.

In this study, a methodology based in a dynamical framework is proposed to incorporate additional sources of information to normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series of agricultural observations for a phenological state estimation application. The proposed implementation is based on the particle filter (PF) scheme that is able to integrate multiple sources of data. Moreover, the dynamics-led design is able to conduct real-time (online) estimations, i.e., without requiring to wait until the end of the campaign. The evaluation of the algorithm is performed by estimating the phenological states over a set of rice fields in Seville (SW, Spain). A Landsat-5/7 NDVI series of images is complemented with two distinct sources of information: SAR images from the TerraSAR-X satellite and air temperature information from a ground-based station. An improvement in the overall estimation accuracy is obtained, especially when the time series of NDVI data is incomplete. Evaluations on the sensitivity to different development intervals and on the mitigation of discontinuities of the time series are also addressed in this work, demonstrating the benefits of this data fusion approach based on the dynamic systems.
