In this paper we report original measurements of total cross sections (TCSs) for positron scattering from the cyclic ethers oxirane (C2H4O), 1,4-dioxane (C4H8O2), and tetrahydropyran (C5H10O). The present experiments focus on the low energy range from similar to 0.2 to 50 eV, with an energy resolution smaller than 300 meV. This study concludes our systematic investigation into TCSs for a class of organic compounds that can be thought of as sub-units or moieties to the nucleotides in living matter, and which as a consequence have become topical for scientists seeking to simulate particle tracks in matter. Note that as TCSs specify the mean free path between collisions in such simulations, they have enjoyed something of a recent renaissance in interest because of that application. For oxirane, we also report original Schwinger multichannel elastic integral cross section (ICS) calculations at the static and static plus polarisation levels, and with and without Born-closure that attempts to account for the permanent dipole moment of C2H4O. Those elastic ICSs are computed for the energy range 0.5-10 eV. To the best of our knowledge, there are no other experimental results or theoretical calculations against which we can compare the present positron TCSs. However, electron TCSs for oxirane (also known as ethylene oxide) and tetrahydropyran do currently exist in the literature and a comparison to them for each species will be presented. We study a strongly interacting "quantum dot 1" and a weakly interacting "dot 2" connected in parallel to metallic leads. Gate voltages can drive the system between Kondo-quenched and non-Kondo free-moment phases separated by Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transitions. Away from the immediate vicinity of the quantum phase transitions, the physical properties retain signatures of first-order transitions found previously to arise when dot 2 is strictly noninteracting. As interactions in dot 2 become stronger relative to the dot-lead coupling, the free moment in the non-Kondo phase evolves smoothly from an isolated spin-one-half in dot 1 to a many-body doublet arising from the incomplete Kondo compensation by the leads of a combined dot spin-one. These limits, which feature very different spin correlations between dot and lead electrons, can be distinguished by weak-bias conductance measurements performed at finite temperatures.

Final Gondwana amalgamation was marked by the closure of the Neoproterozoic Clymene ocean between the Amazonia craton and central Gondwana. The events which occurred in the last stage of this closure were recorded in the upper Alto Paraguai Group in the foreland of the Paraguay orogen. Outcrop-based fades analysis of the siliciclastic rocks of upper Alto Paraguai Group, composed of the Sepotuba and Diamantino Formations, was carried out in the Diamantino region, within the eastern part of the Barra dos Bugres basin, Mato Grosso state, central-western Brazil. The Sepotuba Formation is composed of sandy shales with planar to wave lamination interbedded with fine-grained sandstone with climbing ripple cross-lamination, planar lamination, swaley cross-stratification and tangential to sigmoidal cross-bedding with mud drapes, related to marine offshore deposits. The lower Diamantino Formation is composed of a monotonous, laterally continuous for hundreds of metres, interbedded siltstone and fine-grained sandstone succession with regular parallel lamination, climbing ripple cross-lamination and ripple-bedding interpreted as distal turbidites. The upper part of this formation consists of fine to medium-grained sandstones with sigmoidal cross-bedding, planar lamination, climbing ripple cross-lamination, symmetrical to asymmetrical and linguoid ripple marks arranged in lobate sand bodies. These fades are interbedded with thick siltstone in coarsening upward large-scale cycles related to a delta system. The Sepotuba Formation characterises the last transgressive deposits of the Paraguay basin representing the final stage of a marine incursion of the Clymene ocean. The progression of orogenesis in the hinterland resulted in the confinement of the Sepotuba sea as a foredeep sub-basin against the edge of the Amazon craton. Turbidites were generated during the deepening of the basin. The successive filling of the basin was associated with progradation of deltaic lobes from the southeast, in a wide lake or a restricted sea that formed after 541 +/- 7 Ma. Southeastern to east dominant Neoproterozoic source regions were confirmed by zircon grains that yielded ages around 600 to 540 Ma, that are interpreted to be from granites in the Paraguay orogen. This overall regressive succession recorded in the Alto Paraguai Group represents the filling up of a foredeep basin after the final amalgamation of westem Gondwana in the earliest Phanerozoic. The molecular method is used to obtain nuclear electric quadrupole moment (NQM) values for hafnium through electric field gradients (EFGs) at this nucleus in HfO and HfS. Dirac-Coulomb calculations with the Coupled Cluster approach, DC-CCSD (T) and DC-CCSD-T, were carried out to achieve the most accurate estimates of these EFGs. Higher order corrections are also added. Hence, the most reliable values for 177Hf and 179Hf determined here are 3319(33) and 3750(37) mbarn, respectively, in nice accordance with the best currently accepted NQMs for this element. Study design: Experimental, controlled, animal study. Objectives: To evaluate the functional effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy administered shortly, one day after, and no intervention (control) in standardized experimental spinal cord lesions in Wistar rats. Setting: Sao Paulo, Brazil. Methods: In all, 30 Wistar rats with spinal cord lesions were divided into three groups: one group was submitted to hyperbaric oxygen therapy beginning half an hour after the lesion and with a total of 10 one-hour sessions, one session per day, at 2 atm; the second received the same treatment, but beginning on the day after the lesion; and the third received no treatment (control). The Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan scales were used for functional evaluation on the second day after the lesion and then weekly, until being killed 1 month later. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in the functional analysis on the second day after the lesion. There was no functional difference comparing Groups 1 and 2 (treated shortly after or one day after) in any evaluation moment. On the 7th day, as well as on the 21st and 28th postoperative days, the evaluation showed that Groups 1 and 2 performed significantly better than the control group (receiving no therapy). Conclusion: Hyperbaric chamber therapy is beneficial in the functional recovery of spinal cord lesions in rats, if it is first administered just after spinal cord injury or within 24 h. This work provides a numerical and experimental investigation of fatigue crack growth behavior in steel weldments including crack closure effects and their coupled interaction with weld strength mismatch. A central objective of this study is to extend previously developed frameworks for evaluation of crack clo- sure effects on FCGR to steel weldments while, at the same time, gaining additional understanding of commonly adopted criteria for crack closure loads and their influence on fatigue life of structural welds. Very detailed non-linear finite element analyses using 3-D models of compact tension C ( T ) fracture spec- imens with center cracked, square groove welds provide the evolution of crack growth with cyclic stress intensity factor which is required for the estimation of the closure loads. Fatigue crack growth tests con- ducted on plane-sided, shallow-cracked C ( T ) specimens provide the necessary data against which crack closure effects on fatigue crack growth behavior can be assessed. Overall, the present investigation pro- vides additional support for estimation procedures of plasticity-induced crack closure loads in fatigue analyses of structural steels and their weldments

Attraverso l’analisi di teorie della lettura “centripete” e “centrifughe”, tra fenomenologia, semiotica e teoria della risposta estetica, questa ricerca punta a definire la lettura come un’esperienza estetica di una variabile e plurale letterarietà, o per essere più precisi, come una relazione estetica ad una funzione nel linguaggio, che di volta in volta diviene immanente e trascendente rispetto al linguaggio, immanente nella percepibilità espressiva del segno e trascendente nella sua ristretta finzionalità o fittività, aperta alla dimensione del senso. Così, la letterarietà è vista, dal punto di vista di una teoria della lettura, come una funzione che nega o sovverte il linguaggio ordinario, inteso come contesto normale, ma anche una funzione che permette il supplemento di senso del linguaggio. Ciò rende la definizione di cosa sia letteratura e di quali testi siano considerabili come letterari come una definizione dipendente dalla lettura, ed anche mette in questione la classica dicotomia tra linguaggio standard e linguaggio deviante, di secondo grado e figurativo, comportamento che distinguerebbe la letteratura. Questi quattro saggi vorrebbero dimostrare che la lettura, come una pratica estetica, è l’espressione di una oscillazione tra una Finzione variabile nei suoi effetti ed una Ricezione, la quale è una risposta estetica controllata dal testo, ma anche una relazione estetica all’artefatto a natura verbale. Solo in questo modo può essere compresa la caratteristica paradossale della lettura, il suo stare tra una percezione passiva ed un’attiva esecuzione, tra un’attenzione aspettuale ed una comprensione intenzionale. Queste modalità si riflettono anche sulla natura dialettica della lettura, come una dialettica di apertura e chiusura, ma anche di libertà e fedeltà, risposta ad uno stimolo che può essere interpretato come una domanda, e che presenta la lettura stessa come una premessa dell’interpretazione, come momento estetico. Così una teoria della lettura dipende necessariamente da una teoria dell’arte che si presenta come funzionale, relativa più al Quando vi è arte?/Come funziona? piuttosto che al Che cosa è Arte?, che rende questo secondo problema legato al primo. Inoltre, questo Quando dell’Arte, che definisce l’opera d’arte come un’arte- all’-opera, dipende a sua volta, in un campo letterario, dalla domanda Quando vi è esperienza estetica letteraria? e dalla sue condizioni, quelle di finzione e ricezione.

This research work faces the problem of insertion of viscous dampers into Moment Resisiting Frames (MRF) for maximum efficiency in mitigation of the seismic effects. The work would lead to a precise design indication. The fundamental result of the thesis consists in showing that, even for moment-resisting structures, you can design a system of added viscous dampers able to achieve target levels of performances. Ie given the reduction factor in the seismic response, discover the characteristics of the viscous dampers which allow to achieve it.

By using a symbolic method, known in the literature as the classical umbral calculus, a symbolic representation of Lévy processes is given and a new family of time-space harmonic polynomials with respect to such processes, which includes and generalizes the exponential complete Bell polynomials, is introduced. The usefulness of time-space harmonic polynomials with respect to Lévy processes is that it is a martingale the stochastic process obtained by replacing the indeterminate x of the polynomials with a Lévy process, whereas the Lévy process does not necessarily have this property. Therefore to find such polynomials could be particularly meaningful for applications. This new family includes Hermite polynomials, time-space harmonic with respect to Brownian motion, Poisson-Charlier polynomials with respect to Poisson processes, Laguerre and actuarial polynomials with respect to Gamma processes , Meixner polynomials of the first kind with respect to Pascal processes, Euler, Bernoulli, Krawtchuk, and pseudo-Narumi polynomials with respect to suitable random walks. The role played by cumulants is stressed and brought to the light, either in the symbolic representation of Lévy processes and their infinite divisibility property, either in the generalization, via umbral Kailath-Segall formula, of the well-known formulae giving elementary symmetric polynomials in terms of power sum symmetric polynomials. The expression of the family of time-space harmonic polynomials here introduced has some connections with the so-called moment representation of various families of multivariate polynomials. Such moment representation has been studied here for the first time in connection with the time-space harmonic property with respect to suitable symbolic multivariate Lévy processes. In particular, multivariate Hermite polynomials and their properties have been studied in connection with a symbolic version of the multivariate Brownian motion, while multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials are represented as powers of multivariate polynomials which are time-space harmonic with respect to suitable multivariate Lévy processes.

Il lavoro è dedicato all'analisi fisica e alla modellizzazione dello strato limite atmosferico in condizioni stabili. L'obiettivo principale è quello di migliorare i modelli di parametrizzazione della turbulenza attualmente utilizzati dai modelli meteorologici a grande scala. Questi modelli di parametrizzazione della turbolenza consistono nell' esprimere gli stress di Reynolds come funzioni dei campi medi (componenti orizzontali della velocità e temperatura potenziale) usando delle chiusure. La maggior parte delle chiusure sono state sviluppate per i casi quasi-neutrali, e la difficoltà è trattare l'effetto della stabilità in modo rigoroso. Studieremo in dettaglio due differenti modelli di chiusura della turbolenza per lo strato limite stabile basati su assunzioni diverse: uno schema TKE-l (Mellor-Yamada,1982), che è usato nel modello di previsione BOLAM (Bologna Limited Area Model), e uno schema sviluppato recentemente da Mauritsen et al. (2007). Le assunzioni delle chiusure dei due schemi sono analizzate con dati sperimentali provenienti dalla torre di Cabauw in Olanda e dal sito CIBA in Spagna. Questi schemi di parametrizzazione della turbolenza sono quindi inseriti all'interno di un modello colonnare dello strato limite atmosferico, per testare le loro predizioni senza influenze esterne. Il confronto tra i differenti schemi è effettuato su un caso ben documentato in letteratura, il "GABLS1". Per confermare la validità delle predizioni, un dataset tridimensionale è creato simulando lo stesso caso GABLS1 con una Large Eddy Simulation. ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) è stato usato per questo scopo. La stratificazione stabile vincola il passo di griglia, poichè la LES deve essere ad una risoluzione abbastanza elevata affinchè le tipiche scale verticali di moto siano correttamente risolte. Il confronto di questo dataset tridimensionale con le predizioni degli schemi turbolenti permettono di proporre un insieme di nuove chiusure atte a migliorare il modello di turbolenza di BOLAM. Il lavoro è stato compiuto all' ISAC-CNR di Bologna e al LEGI di Grenoble.

The present study has been carried out with the following objectives: i) To investigate the attributes of source parameters of local and regional earthquakes; ii) To estimate, as accurately as possible, M0, fc, Δσ and their standard errors to infer their relationship with source size; iii) To quantify high-frequency earthquake ground motion and to study the source scaling. This work is based on observational data of micro, small and moderate -earthquakes for three selected seismic sequences, namely Parkfield (CA, USA), Maule (Chile) and Ferrara (Italy). For the Parkfield seismic sequence (CA), a data set of 757 (42 clusters) repeating micro-earthquakes (0 ≤ MW ≤ 2), collected using borehole High Resolution Seismic Network (HRSN), have been analyzed and interpreted. We used the coda methodology to compute spectral ratios to obtain accurate values of fc , Δσ, and M0 for three target clusters (San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Hawaii) of our data. We also performed a general regression on peak ground velocities to obtain reliable seismic spectra of all earthquakes. For the Maule seismic sequence, a data set of 172 aftershocks of the 2010 MW 8.8 earthquake (3.7 ≤ MW ≤ 6.2), recorded by more than 100 temporary broadband stations, have been analyzed and interpreted to quantify high-frequency earthquake ground motion in this subduction zone. We completely calibrated the excitation and attenuation of the ground motion in Central Chile. For the Ferrara sequence, we calculated moment tensor solutions for 20 events from MW 5.63 (the largest main event occurred on May 20 2012), down to MW 3.2 by a 1-D velocity model for the crust beneath the Pianura Padana, using all the geophysical and geological information available for the area. The PADANIA model allowed a numerical study on the characteristics of the ground motion in the thick sediments of the flood plain.

A permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron violates time reversal as well as parity symmetry. Thus it also violates the combination of charge conjugation and parity symmetry if the combination of all three symmetries is a symmetry of nature. The violation of these symmetries could help to explain the observed baryon content of the Universe. The prediction of the Standard Model of particle physics for the neutron electric dipole moment is only about 10e−32 ecm. At the same time the combined violation of charge conjugation and parity symmetry in the Standard Model is insufficient to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Several extensions to the Standard Model can explain the observed baryon asymmetry and also predict values for the neutron electric dipole moment just below the current best experimental limit of d n < 2.9e−26 ecm, (90% C.L.) that has been obtained by the Sussex-RAL-ILL collaboration in 2006. The very same experiment that set the current best limit on the electric dipole moment has been upgraded and moved to the Paul Scherrer Institute. Now an international collaboration is aiming at increasing the sensitivity for an electric dipole moment by more than an order of magnitude. This thesis took place in the frame of this experiment and went along with the commissioning of the experiment until first data taking. After a short layout of the theoretical background in chapter 1, the experiment with all subsystems and their performance are described in detail in chapter 2. To reach the goal sensitivity the control of systematic errors is as important as an increase in statistical sensitivity. Known systematic efects are described and evaluated in chapter 3. During about ten days in 2012, a first set of data was measured with the experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. An analysis of this data is presented in chapter 4, together with general tools developed for future analysis eforts. The result for the upper limit of an electric dipole moment of the neutron is |dn| ≤ 6.4e−25 ecm (95%C.L.). Chapter 5 presents investigations for a next generation experiment, to build electrodes made partly from insulating material. Among other advantages, such electrodes would reduce magnetic noise, generated by the thermal movement of charge carriers. The last Chapter summarizes this work and gives an outlook.

Die Analyse optischer Spektren liefert einen kernmodellunabhängigen Zugang zur Bestimmung der Kernspins, Ladungsradien und elektromagnetischen Momente von Atomkernen im Grundzustand und von langlebigen Isomeren. Eine der vielseitigsten Methoden zur optischen Spektroskopie an kurzlebigen Isotopen ist die kollineare Laserspektroskopie. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde zum einen die TRIGA-LASER Strahlstrecke am Institut für Kernchemie der Universität Mainz durch die Implementierung einer neuen offline Oberflächenionenquelle für hohe Verdampfungstemperaturen und eines Strahlanalysesystems weiterentwickelt. Zum anderen wurde kollineare Laserspektroskopie an kurzlebigen Praseodym- und Cadmiumisotopen an ISOLDE/CERN durchgeführt. Die neue Ionenquelle ermöglichte dabei den Test der kollinearen Laserspektroskopie an Praseodymionen am TRIGA-LASER Experiment. Die Spektroskopie der Prasdeodymionen motivierte sich aus der Beobachtung einer zeitlichen Modulation der EC-Zerfallsrate von wasserstoffähnlichem 140Pr58+. Für die Erklärung dieser sogenannten GSI Oszillationen wird unter anderem das magnetische Moment des Kerns benötigt, welches bislang noch nicht experimentell bestimmt wurde. Zudem wurde für wasserstoffähnliches 140Pr58+ überraschenderweise eine kleinere EC-Zerfallskonstante gemessen als für heliumähnliches 140Pr57+. Die Erklärung dieses Phänomens setzt ein positives magnetisches Moment voraus. Bei der Spektroskopie am COLLAPS Experiment wurden erstmals die magnetischen Momente von 135Pr, 136Pr und 137Pr vermessen. Aufgrund zu geringer Produktionsraten war die Spektroskopie des gewünschten Isotops 140Pr jedoch nicht erfolgreich. Die Untersuchung der Cadmiumisotope ist kernphysikalisch motiviert. In der Zinnregion erstrecken sich die Isotope über die beiden magischen Zahlen N=50 und N=82 bei gleichzeitiger Nähe des Z=50 Schalenabschlusses. Hier können verschiedene Kernmodelle getestet werden, die sich beispielsweise hinsichtlich der Stärke des N=82 Schalenabschlusses widersprechen. Diese Arbeit berichtet über erste Ergebnisse der Spektroskopie an Cadmiumatomen, die sich über die Isotope 106−124,126Cd sowie die zugehörigen langlebigen I=11/2− Isomere erstreckt. Die zuvor experimentell bekannten oder aus dem erweiterten Schalenmodell abgeleiteten Kernspins konnten für alle Isotope bis auf 119Cd bestätigt werden. Der Kernspin von 119Cd wurde eindeutig zu I=1/2 bestimmt. Die elektrischen Quadrupolmomente der Isomere zeigen ein bemerkenswert lineares Verhalten in Abhängigkeit von der Neutronenzahl und dies über die eigentliche Kapazität der 1h11/2 Unterschale hinaus. Die Änderungen der mittleren quadratischen Ladungsradien zeigen den auch an Indium- und Zinnisotopen beobachteten stetigen Verlauf. Der lineare Anteil passt sehr gut zu den Berechnung des Tröpfchenmodells in der Parametrisierung nach Berchidevsky und Tondeur. Die Differenzen der mittleren quadratischen Ladungsradien zwischen Grund- und isomeren Zustand der ungeraden Cadmiumisotope zeigen einen interessanten parabolischen Verlauf mit einem Minimum zwischen A=117 und A=119.

A study of hadron production by photons opens unique ways to address a number of fundamental problems in strong interaction physics as well as fundamental questions in Quantum Field Theory. In particular, an understanding of two-photon processes is of crucial importance for constraining the hadronic uncertainties in precision measurements and in searches for new physics. The process of
