We calculate the spectra of produced thermal photons in Au + Au collisions taking into account the nonequilibrium contribution to photon production due to finite shear viscosity. The evolution of the fireball is modeled by second-order as well as by divergence-type 2 + 1 dissipative hydrodynamics, both with an ideal equation of state and with one based on Lattice QCD that includes an analytical crossover. The spectrum calculated in the divergence-type theory is considerably enhanced with respect to the one calculated in the second-order theory, the difference being entirely due to differences in the viscous corrections to photon production. Our results show that the differences in hydrodynamic formalisms are an important source of uncertainty in the extraction of the value of eta/s from measured photon spectra. The uncertainty in the value of eta/s associated with different hydrodynamic models used to compute thermal photon spectra is larger than the one occurring in matching hadron elliptic flow to RHIC data. In this work, the dissociation dynamics of heteronuclear diatomic molecules is investigated by means of the classical driven Morse oscillator. The interaction of the molecule and the laser field is represented through the product of the molecule dipole function and the electric field of the laser. This interaction may lead to the breaking of the chemical bound, that is, to the dissociation of the molecule. The work was developed in two parts. In the first part, we studied the dissociation as a function of the range of the permanent dipole. In the second part, we maximized the dissociation probability manipulating the parameters of the external field. We have observed that the dissociation can be controlled by means of variations of parameters associated with the range of the permanent dipole

This thesis work encloses activities carried out in the Laser Center of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the laboratories of the University of Bologna in Forlì. This thesis focuses on the superficial mechanical treatment for metallic materials called Laser Shock Peening (LSP). This process is a surface enhancement treatment which induces a significant layer of beneficial compressive residual stresses underneath the surface of metal components in order to improve the detrimental effects of the crack growth behavior rate in it. The innovation aspect of this work is the LSP application to specimens with extremely low thickness. In particular, after a bibliographic study and comparison with the main treatments used for the same purposes, this work analyzes the physics of the operation of a laser, its interaction with the surface of the material and the generation of the surface residual stresses which are fundamentals to obtain the LSP benefits. In particular this thesis work regards the application of this treatment to some Al2024-T351 specimens with low thickness. Among the improvements that can be obtained performing this operation, the most important in the aeronautic field is the fatigue life improvement of the treated components. As demonstrated in this work, a well-done LSP treatment can slow down the progress of the defects in the material that could lead to sudden failure of the structure. A part of this thesis is the simulation of this phenomenon using the program AFGROW, with which have been analyzed different geometric configurations of the treatment, verifying which was better for large panels of typical aeronautical interest. The core of the LSP process are the residual stresses that are induced on the material by the interaction with the laser light, these can be simulated with the finite elements but it is essential to verify and measure them experimentally. In the thesis are introduced the main methods for the detection of those stresses, they can be mechanical or by diffraction. In particular, will be described the principles and the detailed realization method of the Hole Drilling measure and an introduction of the X-ray Diffraction; then will be presented the results I obtained with both techniques. In addition to these two measurement techniques will also be introduced Neutron Diffraction method. The last part refers to the experimental tests of the fatigue life of the specimens, with a detailed description of the apparatus and the procedure used from the initial specimen preparation to the fatigue test with the press. Then the obtained results are exposed and discussed.

Last years lasers have become a fundamental tool in the photovoltaic (PV) industry, helping this technology to achieve two major goals: cost reduction and efficiency improvement. Among the present PV technologies, crystalline silicon (c-Si) maintains a clear market supremacy and, in this particular field, the technological efforts are focussing into the improvement of the device efficiency using different approaches (reducing for instance the electrical or optical losses in the device) and the cost reduction in the device fabrication (using less silicon in the final device or implementing more cost effective production steps). In both approaches lasers appear ideally suited tools to achieve the desired success. In this context, this work makes a comprehensive study and develops, until their implementation in a final device, three specific laser processes designed for the optimization of high efficiency PV devices based in c-Si. Those processes are intended to improve the front and back contact of the considered solar cells in order to reduce the production costs and to improve the device efficiency. In particular, to improve the front contact, this work has developed innovative solutions using lasers as fundamental processing tools to metalize, using laser induced forward transfer techniques, and to create local selective emitters by means of laser doping techniques. On the other side, and for the back contact, and approached based in the optimization of standard laser fired contact formation has been envisaged. To achieve these fundamental goals, a number of milestones have been reached in the development of this work, namely: - To understand the basics of the laser-matter interaction physics in the considered processes, in order to preserve the functionality of the irradiated materials. - To develop laser processes fully compatible with low temperature device concepts (as it is the case of heterojunction solar cells). - In particular, to parameterize completely processes of laser doping, laser fired contacts and metallization via laser transfer of material. - To define such a processes in such a way that their final industrial implementation could be a real option. - To improve widely used characterization techniques in order to be applied to the study of these particular processes. - To probe their viability in a final PV device. Finally, the achievement of these milestones has brought as a consequence the fabrication of the first devices in Spain incorporating these concepts. In particular, the developments achieved in laser doping, are relevant not only for the Spanish science but in a general international context, with the introduction of really innovative concepts as local selective emitters. Finally, the advances reached in the laser metallization approached presented in this work open the door to future developments, fully innovative, in the field of PV industrial metallization techniques. This work was made possible by a very close collaboration between the Laser Center of the UPM, in which the author develops his work, and the Research Group of Micro y Nanotecnology of the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, in charge of the preparation and development of samples and the assessment of some laser processes for comparison. As well is important to remark the collaboration of the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas, CIEMAT, in the preparation of specific experiments of great importance in the development of the work. These collaborations have been developed within the framework of various projects such as the PSE-MICROSIL08 (PSE-120000-2006-6), the project INNDISOL (IPT-420000-2010-6), both funded by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional FEDER (UE) “Una manera de hacer Europa” and the MICINN, and the project AMIC (ENE2010-21384-C04-02), whose funding has largely allowed to complete this work.

A theory is presented for a method, recently proposed by Hester and Sonin, of determining the ion temperature in a plasma by measuring the transient current to a cylindrical Langmuir probe after applying a potential Vp{ — eVpy>KTe) under conditions where collection is collision free and the ratio of probe radius to Debye length is small. The ion component of the current does not approach its final steady-state value monotonicalfy, but exhibits a strong, ion-temperature-dependent overshoot in the first few ion-plasma periods following the biasing of the probe. Analytical formulas are derived for the case of a Maxwellian plasma, and convenient graphical results are presented. The possible masking of the overshoot by a transient displacement current is discussed; it is shown how to avoid such displacement effects. For the overshoot to be sensitive to the ion temperature T the probe must be near plasma (zero) potential before applying V1,(eVp~<0.lKTe, VP~ being that initial potential); this is not a drawback of the method, but, on the contrary, it can be used to accurately determine plasma potential along with T.

An electrically floating metallic bare tether in a low Earth orbit would be highly negative with respect to the ambient plasma over most of its length, and would be bombarded by ambient ions. This would liberates secondary electrons which after acceleration through the same voltage, would form a magnetically guided two-sided planar e beam, and result in auroral effects(ionization and light emission)upon impacto on the atmospheric E layer, at about 120-140 km altitude. This papere examines in a preliminary way the feasibility of using this effecet as an uppeart atmospheric probe. Ionization rate can reach up to 10 3 cm 3 S -1 if a tape, instead of a wire, is used as tether. Contrary to standard e beams, the beam from the tether is free of spacecrafct charging and plasma interaction problems and its energy flux varies across the crosss ection,w hich is quite large;this would make possible continuous observation from the satellite, with high resolution both spectral and vertical, of the induced optical emissions. Ground observation might be possible at latitudes around 40ø , for night, magnetically quiet conditions.

We have analyzed a phenomenon heretofore ignored in the analyses of ion traps, which are used to determine ion temperature, among other plasma parameters, in planetary ionospheres: ions that are rejected by the trap perturb the plasma well ahead of the Debye sheath at the front of the trap. The determination of the perturbed plasma flow is found to depend on the fact that the ionospheric plasma be stable to quasineutral, ion-acoustic perturbations.

Surface compositional changes in GaAs due to RF plasmas of different gases have been investigated by XPS and etch rates were measured using AFM. Angular Resolved XPS (ARXPS) was also employed for depth analysis of the composition of the surface layers. An important role in this study was determination of oxide thickness using XPS data. The study of surface - plasma interaction was undertaken by correlating results of surface analysis with plasma diagnosis. Different experiments were designed to accurately measure the BEs associated with the Ga 3d, Ga 2P3/2 and LMM peaks using XPS analysis and propose identification in terms of the oxides of GaAs. Along with GaAs wafers, some reference compounds such as metallic Ga and Ga2O3 powder were used. A separate study aiming the identification of the GaAs surface oxides formed on the GaAs surface during and after plasma processing was undertaken. Surface compositional changes after plasma treatment, prior to surface analysis are considered, with particular reference to the oxides formed in the air on the activated surface. Samples exposed to ambient air for different periods of time and also to pure oxygen were analysed. Models of surface processes were proposed for explanation of the stoichiometry changes observed with the inert and reactive plasmas used. In order to help with the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for surface effects during plasma treatment, computer simulation using SRIM code was also undertaken. Based on simulation and experimental results, models of surface phenomena are proposed. Discussion of the experimental and simulated results is made in accordance with current theories and published results of different authors. The experimental errors introduced by impurities and also by data acquisition and processing are also evaluated.

Increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations are causing greater dissolution of CO2 into seawater, and are ultimately responsible for today's ongoing ocean acidification. We manipulated seawater acidity by addition of HCl and by increasing CO2 concentration and observed that two coastal harpacticoid copepods, Amphiascoides atopus and Schizopera knabeni were both more sensitive to increased acidity when generated by CO2. The present study indicates that copepods living in environments more prone to hypercapnia, such as mudflats where S. knabeni lives, may be less sensitive to future acidification. Ocean acidification is also expected to alter the toxicity of waterborne metals by influencing their speciation in seawater. CO2 enrichment did not affect the free-ion concentration of Cd but did increase the free-ion concentration of Cu. Antagonistic toxicities were observed between CO2 with Cd, Cu and Cu free-ion in A. atopus. This interaction could be due to a competition for H+ and metals for binding sites.
