Heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) concentrations were determined in different tissues (muscle, kidney, liver, brain, gonads, heart and feathers) of Glaucous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Bjornoya and Jan Mayen. The age and spatial dependent variations in heavy metals were quantified and interpreted in view of the three chemometric techniques, i.e. non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test, redundancy gradient analysis and detrended correspondence analysis. The Glaucous Gulls from Bjornoya contained significantly higher (p < 0.05) levels of Cd, Cu and Zn than those inhabited Jan Mayen. Adult birds were characterized by greater (p < 0.01) concentration of muscle, hepatic and renal heavy metals in comparison to chicks. Insignificantly higher slope constant Zn/Cd for the liver than for the kidney may reflect insignificant Cd exposure. Estimate of transfer factor (TF) allows us to assess variations in heavy metal concentrations during the individual development of Glaucous Gulls. It may be stated that there is a distinct increase of bioaccumulation of all the studied metals during subsequent stages of the bird life.

Depending on the temperature and the extent of diagenetic alteration of fluid chemistry, fluid flow at convergent margins may transfer important quantities of heat and mass between the crust and seawater, thereby influencing global mass, isotopic and heat budgets. In the North Aoba Basin, an intra-arc basin located at the New Hebrides Island Arc, alteration of volcanic ash to clay minerals and zeolites forms a CaCl2 brine, perhaps in less than 1 to 3 m.y. The brine results from an exchange of Ca for Na, K, and Mg, and an increase in Cl concentrations to a maximum of 1241 mM. The Cl increase is partly due to the transfer of H2O from the pore fluid into authigenic minerals, but water mass balances, d18O-Cl correlations, and Br/Cl ratios suggest that there is a source of Cl in the sediments. Concentration profiles indicate that Li is transferred from the fluid to solid phase at depths <300 meters below seafloor (mbsf), but at greater depths it is transferred from the solid to fluid phase, at temperatures possibly as low as 25°C. In the accretionary wedge extensive fluid flow appears to be confined to highly faulted regions. Although Cl concentrations less than seawater value are common at convergent margins, the New Hebrides margin contains little low-Cl fluid. Br/Cl ratios suggest the low-Cl fluid is from dilution, and d18O values indicate the water may be derived from mineral dehydration and mixing with meteoric water. The New Hebrides margin exhibits few surface manifestations of venting (e.g., sulfide-oxidizing benthic biological communities, carbonate crusts, mud volcanoes) and thus fluid fluxes may be smaller than at many other margins.

This work aims at a deeper understanding of the energy loss phenomenon in polysilicon production reactors by the so-called Siemens process. Contributions to the energy consumption of the polysilicon deposition step are studied in this paper, focusing on the radiation heat loss phenomenon. A theoretical model for radiation heat loss calculations is experimentally validated with the help of a laboratory CVD prototype. Following the results of the model, relevant parameters that directly affect the amount of radiation heat losses are put forward. Numerical results of the model applied to a state-of-the-art industrial reactor show the influence of these parameters on energy consumption due to radiation per kilogram of silicon produced; the radiation heat loss can be reduced by 3.8% when the reactor inner wall radius is reduced from 0.78 to 0.70 m, by 25% when the wall emissivity is reduced from 0.5 to 0.3, and by 12% when the final rod diameter is increased from 12 to 15 cm.

ABSTRACT Hcat-trcatcd wood is modified wood by a thermal process at high temperatures which provides greater dimensional stability and durability without adding harmful chemicals to the environment. It has been mainly applied to softwoods due mainly to economical reasons, being its most common use outdoors or in high humidity environments, as non-structural elements, furniture, etc. The present Thesis studies the feasibility of heat-treated hardwoods for structural uses, particularly ash (Fraxinus excelsior L) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L). To this end, and considering that heat treatment modifies the internal structure of the wood resulting in a new material, experimental and numerical studies are performed for its characterization. This investigation is developed under the approach of Fracture Mechanics due to the loss of strength and the increase in brittlcncss of the material, especially in tension perpendicular to the grain. Likewise, it holds a collection of the bases, foundations and methodologies of this theory applied to untreated wood and other materials due to the lack of such studies in heat-treated wood. In addition, studies for the mechanical characterization of the material are performed in order to determine the elastic properties considering an orthotropic model. This work is necessary in the investigation of the fracture behavior. It led to the development of a new test method for multiparameter determination by using just a single specimen, providing much more robust results than those obtained with conventional test methodology. Based on this investigation, and considering the limitations of strength and brittleness, and the questionable applicability of existing standards for untreated wood, it is advised not to use intense heat treatments in primary structural elements. It is proposed the application to secondary elements, so that a possible collapse does not involve a loss of overall reliability of the structure. It is studied the feasibility of an innovative and ecological sandwich panel for facades exposed to wind loads, composed by heat-treated wood faces and insulating wood fiberboard with structural function in the core. This investigación was developed within the European research project "Holiwood", Holistic implementation of European thermal treated hardwood (TMT) in the sector of construction industry and noise protection by sustainable, knowledge-based and value added products, of the Sixth Framework Program.
