Neutron powder diffraction measurements on Ca2FeReO6 reveal that this double perovskite orders ferrimagnetically and shows anomalous lattice parameter behavior below T-C=521 K. Below similar to300 K and similar to160 K we observe that the high-T monoclinic crystal structure separates into two and three monoclinic phases, respectively. A magnetic field suppresses the additional phases at low T in favor of the highest-T phase. These manifestations of the orbital degree of freedom of Re 5d electrons indicate that these electrons are strongly correlated and the title compound is a Mott insulator, with competing spin-orbitally ordered states.

Examining theories with an extended strong interaction sector such as axigluons or flavour universal colorons, we find that the constraints obtained from the current data on $t \bar t$ production at the Tevatron are in the range of $\sim {\cal O}$ TeV and thus competitive with those obtained from the dijet data. We point out that for large axigluon/coloron masses, the limits on the coloron mass may be different than those for the axigluon even for $\cot \xi = 1$. We also compute the expected forward-backward asymmetry for the case of the axigluons which would allow it to be discriminated against the SM as also the colorons. We further find that at the LHC, the signal should be visible in the $t \bar t$ invariant mass spectrum for a wide range of axigluon and coloron masses that are still allowed. We point out how top polarisation may be used to further discriminate the axigluon and coloron case from the SM as well as from each other.

We provide a theory for the tunneling conductance G(V) of Dirac electrons on the surface of a topological insulator as measured by a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope tip for low-bias voltages V. We show that if the in-plane rotational symmetry on the surface of the topological insulator is broken by an external field that does not couple to spin directly (such as an in-plane electric field), G(V) exhibits an unconventional dependence on the direction of the magnetization of the tip, i.e., it acquires a dependence on the azimuthal angle of the magnetization of the tip. We also show that G(V) can be used to measure the magnitude of the local out-of-plane spin orientation of the Dirac electrons on the surface. We explain the role of the Dirac electrons in this unconventional behavior and suggest experiments to test our theory.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. Our in situ x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements of Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore show that it undergoes a reversible structural phase transition from cubic pyrochlore to a monoclinic phase at similar to 28.6 GPa. Analysis of the x-ray data shows the transition to be thermodynamically first order and the high pressure phase to be substitutionally disordered. These experimental results are supported by our first principles calculations. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3681300]

High temperature superconductivity in the cuprates remains one of the most widely investigated, constantly surprising and poorly understood phenomena in physics. Here, we describe briefly a new phenomenological theory inspired by the celebrated description of superconductivity due to Ginzburg and Landau and believed to describe its essence. This posits a free energy functional for the superconductor in terms of a complex order parameter characterizing it. We propose that there is, for superconducting cuprates, a similar functional of the complex, in plane, nearest neighbor spin singlet bond (or Cooper) pair amplitude psi(ij). Further, we suggest that a crucial part of it is a (short range) positive interaction between nearest neighbor bond pairs, of strength J'. Such an interaction leads to nonzero long wavelength phase stiffness or superconductive long range order, with the observed d-wave symmetry, below a temperature T-c similar to zJ' where z is the number of nearest neighbors; d-wave superconductivity is thus an emergent, collective consequence. Using the functional, we calculate a large range of properties, e. g., the pseudogap transition temperature T* as a function of hole doping x, the transition curve T-c(x), the superfluid stiffness rho(s)(x, T), the specific heat (without and with a magnetic field) due to the fluctuating pair degrees of freedom and the zero temperature vortex structure. We find remarkable agreement with experiment. We also calculate the self-energy of electrons hopping on the square cuprate lattice and coupled to electrons of nearly opposite momenta via inevitable long wavelength Cooper pair fluctuations formed of these electrons. The ensuing results for electron spectral density are successfully compared with recent experimental results for angle resolved photo emission spectroscopy (ARPES), and comprehensively explain strange features such as temperature dependent Fermi arcs above T-c and the ``bending'' of the superconducting gap below T-c.

We solve the wave equations of arbitrary integer spin fields in the BTZ black hole background and obtain exact expressions for their quasinormal modes. We show that these quasinormal modes precisely agree with the location of the poles of the corresponding two point function in the dual conformal field theory as predicted by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then use these quasinormal modes to construct the one-loop determinant of the higher spin field in the thermal BTZ background. This is shown to agree with that obtained from the corresponding heat kernel constructed recently by group theoretic methods.

We discuss the possibility of using electroproduction of J/psi as a probe of gluon Sivers function by measuring single spin asymmetry (SSA) in experiments with transversely polarized protons and electron beams. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS, and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production and find asymmetry up to 25% for certain choices of model parameters which have been used earlier for estimating SSA in the SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes.

New C-13-detected NMR experiments have been devised for molecules in solution and solid state, which provide chemical shift correlations of methyl groups with high resolution, selectivity and sensitivity. The experiments achieve selective methyl detection by exploiting the one bond J-coupling between the C-13-methyl nucleus and its directly attached C-13 spin in a molecule. In proteins such correlations edit the C-13-resonances of different methyl containing residues into distinct spectral regions yielding a high resolution spectrum. This has a range of applications as exemplified for different systems such as large proteins, intrinsically disordered polypeptides and proteins with a paramagnetic centre.

Recently it has been shown that the wave equations of bosonic higher spin fields in the BTZ background can be solved exactly. In this work we extend this analysis to fermionic higher spin fields. We solve the wave equations for arbitrary half-integer spin fields in the BTZ black hole background and obtain exact expressions for their quasinormal modes. These quasinormal modes are shown to agree precisely with the poles of the corresponding two point function in the dual conformal field theory as predicted by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We also obtain an expression for the 1-loop determinant for the Euclidean non-rotating BTZ black hole in terms of the quasinormal modes which agrees with that obtained by integrating the heat kernel found by group theoretic methods.

We describe a method to fabricate high-density biological microarrays using lithographic patterning of polyelectrolyte multi layers formed by spin assisted electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly. Proteins or DNA can be immobilized on the polyelectrolyte patterns via electrostatic attachment leading to functional microarrays. As the immobilization is done using electrostatically assembled polyelectrolyte anchor, this process is substrate independent and is fully compatible with a standard semiconductor fabrication process flow. Moreover, the electrostatic assembly of the anchor layer is a fast process with reaction saturation times of the order of a few minutes unlike covalent schemes that typically require hours to reach saturation. The substrate independent nature of this technique is demonstrated by functionalizing glass slides as well as regular transparency sheets using the same procedure. Using a model protein assay, we demonstrate that the non-covalent immobilization scheme described here has competitive performance compared to conventional covalent immobilization schemes described in literature. We study a junction of a topological insulator with a thin two-dimensional nonmagnetic or partially polarized ferromagnetic metallic film deposited on a three-dimensional insulator. We show, by deriving generic boundary conditions applicable to electrons traversing the junction, that there is a finite spin-current injection into the film whose magnitude can be controlled by tuning a voltage V applied across the junction. For ferromagnetic films, the direction of the component of the spin current along the film magnetization can also be tuned by tuning the barrier potential V-0 at the junction. We point out the role of the chiral spin-momentum locking of the Dirac electrons behind this phenomenon and suggest experiments to test our theory.

A generalized top-spin analysis proposed some time ago in the context of the standard model and subsequently studied in varying contexts is now applied primarily to the case of e(+)e(-) -> t (tww) over bar with transversely polarized beams. This extends our recent work with new physics couplings of scalar (S) and tensor (T) types. We carry out a comprehensive analysis assuming only the electron beam to be transversely polarized, which is sufficient to probe these interactions, and also eliminates any azimuthal angular dependence due to the standard model or new physics of the vector (V) and axial-vector (A) type interactions. We then consider new physics of the general four-Fermi type of V and A type with both beams transversely polarized and discuss implications with longitudinal polarization as well. The generalized spin bases are all investigated in the presence of either longitudinal or transverse beam polarization to look for appreciable deviation from the SM prediction in case of the new physics. 90% confidence level limits are obtained on the interactions for the generalized spin bases with realistic integrated luminosity. In order to achieve this we present a general discussion based on helicity amplitudes and derive a general transformation matrix that enables us to treat the spin basis. We find that beamline basis combined with transverse polarization provides an excellent window of opportunity both for S, T and V, A new physics, followed by the off-diagonal basis. The helicity basis is shown to be the best in case of longitudinal polarization to look for new physics effects due to V and A. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.86.114019

The top polarization at the International Linear Collider (ILC) with transverse beam polarization is utilized in the process to probe interactions of the scalar and tensor type beyond the Standard Model and to disentangle their individual contributions. Confidence level limits of 90% are presented on the interactions with realistic integrated luminosity and are found to improve by an order of magnitude compared to the case when the spin of the top quark is not measured. Sensitivities of the order of a few times 10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 3) TeV (-aEuro parts per thousand 2) for real and imaginary parts of both scalar and tensor couplings at and 800 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and completely polarized beams are shown to be possible.

We examine the thermodynamic properties of recently constructed black hole solutions in SL(3, R) x SL(3, R) Chern-Simons theory in the presence of a chemical potential for spin-3 charge, which acts as an irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT with W-3 X W-3 symmetry. The smoothness or holonomy conditions admit four branches of solutions describing a flow between two AdS(3) backgrounds corresponding to two different CFTs. The dominant branch at low temperatures, connected to the BTZ black hole, merges smoothly with a thermodynamically unstable branch and disappears at higher temperatures. We confirm that the UV region of the flow satisfies the Ward identities of a CFT with W-3((2)) x W-3((2)) symmetry deformed by a spin-3/2 current. This allows to identify the precise map between UV and HI thermodynamic variables. We find that the high temperature regime is dominated by a black hole branch whose thermodynamics can only be consistently inferred with reference to this W-3((2)) x W-3((2)) CFT.
