Power law analysis of financial index dynamics

Power law PL and fractional calculus are two faces of phenomena with long memory behavior. This paper applies PL description to analyze different periods of the business cycle. With such purpose the evolution of ten important stock market indices DAX, Dow Jones, NASDAQ, Nikkei, NYSE, S&P500, SSEC, HSI, TWII, and BSE over time is studied. An evolutionary algorithm is used for the fitting of the PL parameters. It is observed that the PL curve fitting constitutes a good tool for revealing the signal main characteristics leading to the emergence of the global financial dynamic evolution.

ECG Biometrics: A Template Selection Approach

Electrocardiography (ECG) biometrics is emerging as a viable biometric trait. Recent developments at the sensor level have shown the feasibility of performing signal acquisition at the fingers and hand palms, using one-lead sensor technology and dry electrodes. These new locations lead to ECG signals with lower signal to noise ratio and more prone to noise artifacts; the heart rate variability is another of the major challenges of this biometric trait. In this paper we propose a novel approach to ECG biometrics, with the purpose of reducing the computational complexity and increasing the robustness of the recognition process enabling the fusion of information across sessions. Our approach is based on clustering, grouping individual heartbeats based on their morphology. We study several methods to perform automatic template selection and account for variations observed in a person's biometric data. This approach allows the identification of different template groupings, taking into account the heart rate variability, and the removal of outliers due to noise artifacts. Experimental evaluation on real world data demonstrates the advantages of our approach.

Interference detection in GNSS signals using Gaussianity criterion

We assess the performance of Gaussianity tests, namely the Anscombe-Glynn, Lilliefors, Cramér-von Mises, and Giannakis-Tsatsanis (G-T), with the purpose of detecting narrowband and wideband interference in GNSS signals. Simulations have shown that the G-T test outperforms the others being suitable as a benchmark for comparison with different types of interference detection algorithms. © 2014 EURASIP.

Phex: a computational tool for plate heat exchanges design problems

This paper presents a computational tool (PHEx) developed in Excel VBA for solving sizing and rating design problems involving Chevron type plate heat exchangers (PHE) with 1-pass-1-pass configuration. The rating methodology procedure used in the program is outlined, and a case study is presented with the purpose to show how the program can be used to develop sensitivity analysis to several dimensional parameters of PHE and to observe their effect on transferred heat and pressure drop.

Utilization of remote experimentation in mobile devices for education

In this paper the authors intend to demonstrate the utilization of remote experimentation (RE) using mobile computational devices in the Science areas of the elementary school, with the purpose to develop practices that will help in the assimilation process of the subjects taught in classroom seeking to interlink them with the daily students? activities. Allying mobility with RE we intend to minimize the space-temporal barrier giving more availability and speed in the information access. The implemented architecture utilizes technologies and freely distributed softwares with open code resources besides remote experiments developed in the Laboratory of Remote Experimentation (RExLab) of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Brazil, through the physical computation platform of the ?open hardware of construction of our own. The utilization of open code computational tools and the integration of hardware to the 3D virtual worlds, accessible through mobile devices, give to the project an innovative face with a high potential for reproducibility and reusability.

Molecular mobility, composition and structure analysis in glycerol plasticised chitosan films

This study was developed with the purpose to investigate the effect of polysaccharide/plasticiser concentration on the microstructure and molecular dynamics of polymeric film systems, using transmission electron microscope imaging (TEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Experiments were carried out in chitosan/glycerol films prepared with solutions of different composition. The films obtained after drying and equilibration were characterised in terms of composition, thickness and water activity. Results show that glycerol quantities used in film forming solutions were responsible for films composition; while polymer/total plasticiser ratio in the solution determined the thickness (and thus structure) of the films. These results were confirmed by TEM. NMR allowed understanding the films molecular rearrangement. Two different behaviours for the two components analysed, water and glycerol were observed: the first is predominantly moving free in the matrix, while glycerol is mainly bounded to the chitosan chain. Using the TRAILER tool for managing informal learning in academic and professional contexts: the learner perspective

Informal Learning plays an important role in everyone's life and yet we often are unaware of it. The need to keep track of the knowledge acquired through informal learning is increasing as its sources become increasingly diverse. This paper presents a study on a tool developed to help keeping track of learners' informal learning, both within academic and professional contexts, This tool, developed within the European Commission funded TRAILER project, will further integrate the improvements suggested by users during the piloting phase. The two studied contexts were similar regarding the importance and perception of Informal Learning, but differed concerning tool usage. The overall idea of managing one's informal learning was well accepted and welcomed, which validated the emerging need for a tool with this purpose.

Managing Informal Learning in professional contexts: the learner’s perspective

Informal Learning is present in everyone's life but its awareness only recently has been reported. The need to keep track of the knowledge acquired this way is increasing as its sources diversity also increases. This work presents the pilots trials on the use of a tool developed to help keeping track of the learners’ informal learning, within a number of companies spread out in three countries. This tool developed through the European Commission funded project TRAILER, is still under development, which will allow integrating the set of improving suggestions obtained from users during the piloting phase. The overall idea of managing one’s informal learning was well accepted and welcomed, which validated the emerging need for a tool with this purpose.
