In Lucian Scythian (§11), all previous editors have corrected the word ¢p£xetai as it appears in the manuscripts to p£xetai. We aim to justify the restoration of the original text because, obviously, it is possible in terms of form, and, besides, it seems more appropriate to the context. The verb ¢p£gomai implies the notion of being moved from one place to another, while p£gomai expresses only the notion of simple attraction which does not involve actual movement. This notion of true surrendering through the senses seems to match the idea developed here by Lucian; loci paralleli in Lucian himself and other Attic authors help us to confirm this interpretation.

Plató és autor d"uns Diàlegs fonamentals en la història d"allò que abans s"anomenava «la nostra» cultura, la cultura d"Occident; no hi deu haver ningú que ignori aquesta dada bàsica, elemental; i potser per això mateix pot semblar sorprenent que calgui reblar-ho. Ara bé, el fet de preguntar-se amb calma per quins motius el primer monument filosòfic que reconeixem en part, almenys com a «nostre» adopta la forma dialògica no constitueix cap platitud anacrònica, si es fa amb cura, ni mereix un encongiment d"espatlles com a tota resposta.

Lucien de Samosate est sans doute un écrivain difficile a classer. Certains en font le roi du pastiche. Pour nous il s'agit. par contre, d'un écrivain lucide et intelligent qui cherche dans la tradition les éléments qui peuvent l'aider a comprendre le présent et a en faire une critique parfois féroce.

La idea de hacer coincidir a los argonautas con los feacios homéricos aparece solo claramente en los poetas helenísticos. Calímaco parece haber dedicado especial atención a la escala feacia, en terminus similares -peso no idénticos- a los de Apolonio',y Filitas menciona unas hadas de Medea y Jason en el palacio de Alcinoa'. Testimonios anteriores asocian asimismo a Medea, Jason y sus hijos con Corcina...

Alterations of Na, K and Rb concentrations in Mycenaean pottery and a proposed explanation using X-ray diffraction

One of the most important reference groups for Mycenaean pottery is the Mycenae/Berbati (MB). In several studies, a second group has been identified (MBKR). The chemical compositions were similar to MB, but with important differences in the Na, K and Rb contents. The present study suggests that these differences are due to selective alteration and contamination processes that are indirectly determined by the original firing temperature. Therefore, groups MB and MBKR should be considered as a single reference group.

El cos molest en l'obra d'Epictet

The work by Epictetus shows a remarkable amount of allusions to unpleasant aspects of the human body. It deals with expressions which sometimes could be almost considered aischrologia and, on other occasions, they really are. Our contribution approaches this subject and asks which might be the origin of this practice. We suggest the use of those expressions describes the body in terms fitting with Epictetus" stoic philosophy aimed to establish an inner separation between body and the right use of reason leading us into virtue. Furthermore his humble origin as a slave could help him in using unpleasant words without prejudices. Also Arrian could insist on that characteristic when transmitting Epictetus" teachings.

Technology transfer at the periphery of the Mycenaean world: the cases of Mycenaean pottery found in central Macedonia (Greece) and the Plain of Sybaris (Italy)

The study of technology transfer in pottery production to the periphery of the Mycenaean world has been addressed by considering two different areas, southern Italy and central Macedonia. Technological features such as ceramic paste, decoration and firing have been determined for different ceramic groups established according to provenance criteria. The studies of technology and provenance have been performed following an archaeometric approach, using neutron activation analysis, petrographic analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results have revealed the existence of two different models. On the one hand, southern Italy seems to exhibit a more organized pottery production, which follows a Mycenaean-like technology, while in central Macedonia production is probably more varied, being based in part on the technology of the local tradition.

Chemical and mineralogical alteration of ceramics from a Late Bronze Age kiln at Kommos, Crete: the effect on the formation of a reference group

The formation of reference groups comprises an important procedure in chemical provenance studies of archaeological pottery. Material from ancient kilns is thought to be especially suitable for reference groups, as it comprises a definite unit of past production. Pottery from the Late Minoan IA kiln excavated at Kommos, Crete was analysed in order to produce a reference group in this important area of Minoan ceramic production. The samples were characterized by a combination of techniques providing information on the chemistry, mineralogy and microstructure of the ceramic body. Initially, the study was unable to establish, in a straightforward manner, a chemical reference group. Different ceramic pastes and a range of selective alterations and contaminations, affected by variable firing temperatures and burial environment, were shown to be responsible for the compositional variability. Procedures are described to compensate for such alterations and the perturbations in the data that they produce.

[cat] Les traduccions dels primers capítols del llibre VII de la República de Plató on apareix la famosa imatge de la caverna, εἰκών, presenten una sorprenent i intrigant varietat interpretativa: “al·legoria”, “mite”, “faula”, “paràbola”, “símil”, “comparació”... Aquest article, prenent com a exemple la notable fidelitat al text del traductor victorià de Plató, B. Jowett, i mitjançant una anàlisi rigorosa dels termes que acompanyen la imatge, manté la necessitat de no interpretar ni corregir en aquest cas el gran filòsof idealista o “ideocèntric”, assenyalant alhora, si el capteniment filològic és un altre, les contradiccions resultants i l’ús d’algun terme aliè al lèxic platònic com ara “al·legoria”.
