Complex narratives: estudos de casos de narrativas audiovisuais complexas

O presente trabalho apresenta estudos de casos de expressões audiovisuais reunidas por Jan Simons sob a denominação de narrativas complexas, propondo a sua utilização como referência para aplicação de interação na TV Digital. O corpus é constituído das seguintes produções submetidas a essa classificação: forking path narratives e puzzle films com The Butterfly Effect (Erci Bress e J. Mackye Gruber, 2004); mind-game films com Lola Rennt (Tom Tykwer, 1998); modular narratives com Nine Lives (GPS films, 2005), database narratives e modular narratives com Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994); network narratives com Babel (Alejandro Gonzalez, 2006) e subjectives stories com Being John Malkovich (Spike Jonze, 1999). Compreendida como uma técnica de seleção e articulação de fragmentos de sentidos na composição do discurso audiovisual, aponta-se a montagem como um mecanismo propulsor de interação, manifestada pela transferência da sincronização dos módulos de sentidos que compõe a mensagem ou na construção de discursos audiovisuais com linearidade que se difere do nível dos acontecimentos. A pesquisa gerou um capítulo de livro, duas publicações em revistas científicas, além de integrar anais de diversos eventos acadêmicos

Narrativa audiovisual complexa: modular narratives e database narratives

Procura-se nesse trabalho expor as considerações levantadas sobre a modularidade e a temporalidade do filme Pulp Fiction (1994), de Quentin Tarantino, enquadrada por Simons (2008) nas categorias de narrativa audiovisual complexa denominadas modular narratives e database narratives. Com Ricoeur (1983), discutiu-se a sua organização temporal a partir do conceito de tríplice presente em Santo Agostinho, enquanto com Propp (1970) e Cameron (2008) o cará- ter modular dessa narrativa.

A Comparison of Adaptive Strategies and Patterns of Victimization among Homeless Adolescents and Adults

One hundred and fifty-six homeless adolescents and 319 homeless adults interviewed directly on the streets and in shelters were compared for backgrounds of abuse, adaptations to life on the streets, and rates of criminal victimization when on the streets. Homeless adolescents were more likely to be from abusive family backgrounds, more likely to rely on deviant survival strategies, and more likely to be criminally victimized. A social learning model of adaptation and victimization on the streets was hypothesized. Although the model was supported for both homeless adults and adolescents, it was more strongly supported for adolescents than adults, and for males than females regardless of age.

Effects of a CPT-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling on electron-positron scattering

We propose a new CPT-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling between fermions and Abelian gauge fields involving the CPT-even tensor (K-F)(mu nu alpha beta) of the standard model extension. We thus investigate its effects on the cross section of the electron-positron scattering by analyzing the process e(+) + e(-) -> mu(+) + mu(-). Such a study was performed for the parity-odd and parity-even nonbirefringent components of the Lorentz-violating (K-F)(mu nu alpha beta) tensor. Finally, by using experimental data available in the literature, we have imposed upper bounds as tight as 10(-12) (eV)(-1) on the magnitude of the CPT-even and Lorentz-violating parameters while nonminimally coupled. COMMUTATIVE AUTOMORPHIC LOOPS OF ORDER p(3)

A loop is said to be automorphic if its inner mappings are automorphisms. For a prime p, denote by A(p) the class of all 2-generated commutative automorphic loops Q possessing a central subloop Z congruent to Z(p) such that Q/Z congruent to Z(p) x Z(p). Upon describing the free 2-generated nilpotent class two commutative automorphic loop and the free 2-generated nilpotent class two commutative automorphic p-loop F-p in the variety of loops whose elements have order dividing p(2) and whose associators have order dividing p, we show that every loop of A(p) is a quotient of F-p by a central subloop of order p(3). The automorphism group of F-p induces an action of GL(2)(p) on the three-dimensional subspaces of Z(F-p) congruent to (Z(p))(4). The orbits of this action are in one-to-one correspondence with the isomorphism classes of loops from A(p). We describe the orbits, and hence we classify the loops of A(p) up to isomorphism. It is known that every commutative automorphic p-loop is nilpotent when p is odd, and that there is a unique commutative automorphic loop of order 8 with trivial center. Knowing A(p) up to isomorphism, we easily obtain a classification of commutative automorphic loops of order p(3). There are precisely seven commutative automorphic loops of order p(3) for every prime p, including the three abelian groups of order p(3).

Phylogeny and cryptic diversity in geckos (Phyllopezus; Phyllodactylidae; Gekkota) from South America's open biomes

The gecko genus Phyllopezus occurs across South America's open biomes: Cerrado, Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTF, including Caatinga), and Chaco. We generated a multi-gene dataset and estimated phylogenetic relationships among described Phyllopezus taxa and related species. We included exemplars from both described Phyllopezus pollicaris subspecies, P. p. pollicaris and P. p. przewalskii. Phylogenies from the concatenated data as well as species trees constructed from individual gene trees were largely congruent. All phylogeny reconstruction methods showed Bogertia lutzae as the sister species of Phyllopezus maranjonensis, rendering Phyllopezus paraphyletic. We synonymized the monotypic genus Bogertia with Phyllopezus to maintain a taxonomy that is isomorphic with phylogenetic history. We recovered multiple, deeply divergent, cryptic lineages within P. pollicaris. These cryptic lineages possessed mtDNA distances equivalent to distances among other gekkotan sister taxa. Described P. pollicaris subspecies are not reciprocally monophyletic and current subspecific taxonomy does not accurately reflect evolutionary relationships among cryptic lineages. Objective: Although bipolar disorder has high heritability, the onset occurs during several decades of life, suggesting that social and environmental factors may have considerable influence on disease onset. This study examined the association between the age of onset and sunlight at the location of onset. Method: Data were obtained from 2414 patients with a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder, according to DSM-IV criteria. Data were collected at 24 sites in 13 countries spanning latitudes 6.3 to 63.4 degrees from the equator, including data from both hemispheres. The age of onset and location of onset were obtained retrospectively, from patient records and/or direct interviews. Solar insolation data, or the amount of electromagnetic energy striking the surface of the earth, were obtained from the NASA Surface Meteorology and Solar Energy (SSE) database for each location of onset. Results: The larger the maximum monthly increase in solar insolation at the location of onset, the younger the age of onset (coefficient= -4.724, 95% CI: -8.124 to -1.323, p = 0.006), controlling for each countrys median age. The maximum monthly increase in solar insolation occurred in springtime. No relationships were found between the age of onset and latitude, yearly total solar insolation, and the maximum monthly decrease in solar insolation. The largest maximum monthly increases in solar insolation occurred in diverse environments, including Norway, arid areas in California, and Chile. Conclusion: The large maximum monthly increase in sunlight in springtime may have an important influence on the onset of bipolar disorder.

Actions of the Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor Amblyomin-X on VEGF-A-induced angiogenesis

Amblyomin-X is a Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor (Kunitz-type SPI) designed from the cDNA library of the Amblyomma cajennense tick, which displays in vivo anti-tumor activities. Here, the mechanisms of actions of Amblyomin-X in vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A)-induced angiogenesis were characterized. Topical application of Amblyomin-X (10 or 100 ng/10 mu l; each 48 h) inhibited VEGF-A-induced (10 ng/10 mu l; each 48 h) angiogenesis in the dorsal subcutaneous tissue in male Swiss mice. Moreover, similar effect was observed in the VEGF-A-induced angiogenesis in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Additional in vitro assays in t-End cells showed that Amblyomin-X treatment delayed the cell cycle, by maintaining them in G0/G1 phase, and inhibited cell proliferation and adhesion, tube formation and membrane expression of the adhesion molecule platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-I), regardless of mRNA synthesis. Together, results herein reveal the role of Kunitz-type SPI on in vivo VEGF-A-induced angiogenesis, by exerting modulatory actions on endothelial cell proliferation and adhesion, especially on membrane expression of PECAM-1. These data provide further mechanisms of actions of Kunitz-type SPI, corroborating their relevance as scientific tools in the design of therapeutic molecules. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Classifying A-field and B-field configurations in the presence of D-branes. Part II: Stacks of D-branes

In the paper of Bonora et al. (2008) [3] we have shown, in the context of type II superstring theory, the classification of the allowed B-field and A-field configurations in the presence of anomaly-free D-branes, the mathematical framework being provided by the geometry of gerbes. Here we complete the discussion considering in detail the case of a stack of D-branes, carrying a non-abelian gauge theory, which was just sketched in Bonora et al. (2008) [3]. In this case we have to mix the geometry of abelian gerbes, describing the B-field, with the one of higher-rank bundles, ordinary or twisted. We describe in detail the various cases that arise according to such a classification, as we did for a single D-brane, showing under which hypotheses the A-field turns out to be a connection on a canonical gauge bundle. We also generalize to the non-abelian setting the discussion about "gauge bundles with non-integral Chern classes", relating them to twisted bundles with connection. Finally, we analyze the geometrical nature of the Wilson loop for each kind of gauge theory on a D-brane or stack of D-branes.

L'anello di coomologia della varietà delle bandiere

Lo scopo di questa tesi è il calcolo dell'anello di coomologia di de Rham della varietà delle bandiere di uno spazio vettoriale complesso. Per prima cosa introduciamo la coomologia di de Rham e riassumiamo le sue principali proprietà. Definiamo poi la varietà delle bandiere di uno spazio vettoriale complesso, e, utilizzando la teoria delle classi di Chern, ne calcoliamo l'anello di coomologia di de Rham.

Coordinate isoterme

Questa tesi si propone di verificare l'esistenza di coordinate isoterme su una superficie. Le coordinate isoterme danno localmente una mappa conforme da una varietà riemanniana bidimensionale al piano Euclideo. Se la superficie è orientabile, allora si può dare un atlante di carte isoterme, cioè le cui coordinate associate siano isoterme. Queste coordinate esistono a patto che vengano soddisfatte certe condizioni. Il risultato nelle classi di Holder è dovuto a Korn e Lichtensten. Chern ha notevolmente semplificato la loro dimostrazione.

A STUDY OF SO2 EMISSIONS AND GROUND SURFACE DISPLACEMENTS AT LASTARRIA VOLCANO, ANTOFAGASTA REGION, NORTHERN CHILE

Lastarria volcano (Chile) is located at the North-West margin of the `Lazufre' ground inflation signal (37x45 km²), constantly uplifting at a rate of ~2.5 cm/year since 1996 (Pritchard and Simons 2002; Froger et al. 2007). The Lastarria volcano has the double interest to be superimposed on a second, smaller-scale inflation signal and to be the only degassing area of the Lazufre signal. In this project, we compared daily SO2 burdens recorded by AURA's OMI mission for 2005-2010 with Ground Surface Displacements (GSD) calculated from the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images for 2003-2010. We found a constant maximum displacement rate of 2.44 cm/year for the period 2003-2007 and 0.80- 0.95 cm/year for the period 2007-2010. Total SO2 emitted is 67.0 kT for the period 2005-2010, but detection of weak SO2 degassing signals in the Andes remains challenging owing to increased noise in the South Atlantic radiation Anomaly region.
