Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), which are defined as nanometer-wide strips of graphene, are attracting an increasing attention as one on the most promising materials for future nanoelectronics. Unlike zero-bandgap graphene that cannot be switched off in transistors, GNRs possess open bandgaps that critically depend on their width and edge structures. GNRs were predominantly prepared through “top-down” methods such as “cutting” of graphene and “unzipping” of carbon nanotubes, but these methods cannot precisely control the structure of the resulting GNRs. In contrast, “bottom-up” chemical synthetic approach enables fabrication of structurally defined and uniform GNRs from tailor-made polyphenylene precursors. Nevertheless, width and length of the GNRs obtainable by this method were considerably limited. In this study, lateral as well as longitudinal extensions of the GNRs were achieved while preserving the high structural definition, based on the bottom-up solution synthesis. Initially, wider (~2 nm) GNRs were synthesized by using laterally expanded monomers through AA-type Yamamoto polymerization, which proved more efficient than the conventional A2B2-type Suzuki polymerization. The wider GNRs showed broad absorption profile extending to the near-infrared region with a low optical bandgap of 1.12 eV, which indicated a potential of such GNRs for the application in photovoltaic cells. Next, high longitudinal extension of narrow (~1 nm) GNRs over 600 nm was accomplished based on AB-type Diels–Alder polymerization, which provided corresponding polyphenylene precursors with the weight-average molecular weight of larger than 600,000 g/mol. Bulky alkyl chains densely installed on the peripheral positions of these GNRs enhanced their liquid-phase processability, which allowed their formation of highly ordered self-assembled monolayers. Furthermore, non-contact time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy measurements demonstrated high charge-carrier mobility within individual GNRs. Remarkably, lateral extension of the AB-type monomer enabled the fabrication of wider (~2 nm) and long (>100 nm) GNRs through the Diels–Alder polymerization. Such longitudinally extended and structurally well-defined GNRs are expected to allow the fabrication of single-ribbon transistors for the fundamental studies on the electronic properties of the GNRs as well as contribute to the development of future electronic devices.

This Master thesis presents the results obtained in the curricular traineeship, carried out within the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bergen, during the Erasmus period, and within the Department of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna. The project followed in Bergen concerned the synthesis of key intermediates used for the functionalization of the backbone of imidazole, using N,N'- diiodo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (“DIH”) as an iodinating agent, and employing an innovative kind of chemical reactor: the “Multijet Oscillating Disc Millireactor” (MJOD Reactor). Afterwards, the work performed in Bologna consisted in verifying the stability in solution of the above mentioned N,N'-diiodo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin utilising spectrophotometric techniques and High Performance Liquid Chromatography analyses (HPLC).

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The Neck Disability Index frequently is used to measure outcomes of the neck. The statistical rigor of the Neck Disability Index has been assessed with conflicting outcomes. To date, Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Neck Disability Index has not been reported for a suitably large population study. Because the Neck Disability Index is not a condition-specific measure of neck function, initial Confirmatory Factor Analysis should consider problematic neck patients as a homogenous group. PURPOSE: We sought to analyze the factor structure of the Neck Disability Index through Confirmatory Factor Analysis in a symptomatic, homogeneous, neck population, with respect to pooled populations and gender subgroups. STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of pooled data. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 1,278 symptomatic neck patients (67.5% female, median age 41 years), 803 nonspecific and 475 with whiplash-associated disorder. OUTCOME MEASURES: The Neck Disability Index was used to measure outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed pooled baseline data from six independent studies of patients with neck problems who completed Neck Disability Index questionnaires at baseline. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis was considered in three scenarios: the full sample and separate sexes. Models were compared empirically for best fit. RESULTS: Two-factor models have good psychometric properties across both the pooled and sex subgroups. However, according to these analyses, the one-factor solution is preferable from both a statistical perspective and parsimony. The two-factor model was close to significant for the male subgroup (p<.07) where questions separated into constructs of mental function (pain, reading headaches and concentration) and physical function (personal care, lifting, work, driving, sleep, and recreation). CONCLUSIONS: The Neck Disability Index demonstrated a one-factor structure when analyzed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis in a pooled, homogenous sample of neck problem patients. However, a two-factor model did approach significance for male subjects where questions separated into constructs of mental and physical function. Further investigations in different conditions, subgroup and sex-specific populations are warranted.

We present ab initio quantum calculation of the optical properties of formamide in vapor phase and in water solution. We employ time dependent density functional theory for the isolated molecule and many-body perturbation theory methods for the system in solution. An average over several molecular dynamics snapshots is performed to take into account the disorder of the liquid. We find that the excited stateproperties of the gas-phase formamide are strongly modified by the presence of the water solvent: the geometry of the molecule is distorted and the electronic and optical properties are severely modified. The important interaction among the formamide and the water molecules forces us to use fully quantum methods for the calculation of the excited stateproperties of this system. The excitonic wave function is localized both on the solute and on part of the solvent.

The molecular interactions between the host molecule, perthiolated beta-cyclodextrin (CD), and the guest molecules, adamantaneacetic acid (AD) and ferroceneacetic acid (FC), have been inestigated theoretically in both the gas and aqueous phases. The major computations have been carried out at the theoretical levels, RHF/6-31G and B3LYP/6- 31G. MP2 electronic energies were also computed based at the geometries optimized by both the RHF and B3LYP methods in the gas phase to establish a better estimate of the correlation effect. The solvent phase computations were completed at the RHF/6-31G and B3LYP/6-31G levels using the PCM model. The most stable structures optimized in gas phase by both the RHF and B3LYP methods were used for the computations in solution. A method to systematically manipulate the relative position and orientation between the interacting molecules is proposed. In the gas phase, six trials with different host-guest relative positions and orientations were completed successfully with the B3LYP method for both the CD-AD and CD-FC complexes. Only four trials were completed with RHF method. In the gas phase, the best results from the RHF method gives for the association Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) values equal to -32.21kj/mol for CD-AD and -25.73kj/mol for CD-FC. And the best results from the B3LYP method have ΔG° equal to -47.57kj/mol for CD-AD and -41.09kj/mol for CD-FC. The MP2 correction significantly lowers ΔG° based on the geometries from both methods. For the RHF structure, the MP2 computations lowered ΔG° to -60.64kj/mol for CD-AD and -54.10 for CD-FC. For the structure from the B3LYP method, it was reduced to -59.87 kj/mol for CD-AD and -54.84 kj/mol for CDFC. The RHF solvent phase calculations yielded following results: ΔG°(aq) equals 107.2kj/mol for CD-AD and 111.4kj/mol for CD-FC. Compared with the results from the RHF method, the B3LYP method provided clearly better solvent phase results with ΔG° (aq) equal to 38.64kj/mol for CD-AD and 39.61kj/mol for CD-FC. These results qualitatively explain the experimental observations. However quantitatively they are in poor agreement with the experimental values available in the literature and those recently published by Liu et al. And the reason is believed to be omission of hydrophobic contribution to the association. Determining the global geometrical minima for these very large systems was very difficult and computationally time consuming, but after a very thorough search, these were identified. A relevant result of this search is that when the complexes, CD-AD and CD-FC, are formed, the AD and FC molecules are only partially embedded inside the CD cavity. The totally embedded complexes were found to have significantly higher energies. The semiempirical method, ZINDO, was employed to investigate the effect of complexation on the first electronic excitation of CD anchored to a metal nano-particle. The computational results revealed that after complexation to FC, the transition intensity declines to about 25% of the original value, and after complexation with AD, the intensity drops almost 50%. The tighter binding and transition intensity of CD-AD qualitatively agrees with the experimental result that the addition of AD to a solution of CD and FC restores the fluorescence of CD that was quenched by the addition of FC. A method to evaluate the “hydrophobic force” effect is proposed for future work.

The conformational properties of the microtubule-stabilizing agent epothilone A ( 1a) and its 3-deoxy and 3-deoxy-2,3-didehydro derivatives 2 and 3 have been investigated in aqueous solution by a combination of NMR spectroscopic methods, Monte Carlo conformational searches, and NAMFIS calculations. The tubulin-bound conformation of epothilone A ( 1a), as previously proposed on the basis of solution NMR data, was found to represent a significant fraction of the ensemble of conformations present for the free ligands in aqueous solution.

It is unknown whether transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) signaling uniformly participates in fibrogenic chronic liver diseases, irrespective of the underlying origin, or if other cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-13 share in fibrogenesis (e.g., due to regulatory effects on type I pro-collagen expression). TGF-beta1 signaling events were scored in 396 liver tissue samples from patients with diverse chronic liver diseases, including hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), Schistosoma japonicum infection, and steatosis/steatohepatitis. Phospho-Smad2 staining correlated significantly with fibrotic stage in patients with HBV infection (n = 112, P < 0.001) and steatosis/steatohepatitis (n = 120, P < 0.01), but not in patients with HCV infection (n = 77, P > 0.05). In tissue with HBx protein expression, phospho-Smad2 was detectable, suggesting a functional link between viral protein expression and TGF-beta1 signaling. For IL-13, immunostaining correlated with fibrotic stage in patients with HCV infection and steatosis/steatohepatitis. IL-13 protein was more abundant in liver tissue lysates from three HCV patients compared with controls, as were IL-13 serum levels in 68 patients with chronic HCV infection compared with 20 healthy volunteers (72.87 +/- 26.38 versus 45.41 +/- 3.73, P < 0.001). Immunohistochemistry results suggest that IL-13-mediated liver fibrogenesis may take place in the absence of phospho-signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 6 signaling. In a subgroup of patients with advanced liver fibrosis (stage > or =3), neither TGF-beta nor IL-13 signaling was detectable. Conclusion: Depending on the cause of liver damage, a predominance of TGF-beta or IL-13 signaling is found. TGF-beta1 predominance is detected in HBV-related liver fibrogenesis and IL-13 predominance in chronic HCV infection. In some instances, the underlying fibrogenic mediator remains enigmatic.

To make use of the isotope ratio of nonexchangeable hydrogen (δ2Hn (nonexchangeable)) of bulk soil organic matter (SOM), the mineral matrix (containing structural water of clay minerals) must be separated from SOM and samples need to be analyzed after H isotope equilibration. We present a novel technique for demineralization of soil samples with HF and dilute HCl and recovery of the SOM fraction solubilized in the HF demineralization solution via solid-phase extraction. Compared with existing techniques, organic C (Corg) and organic N (Norg) recovery of demineralized SOM concentrates was significantly increased (Corg recovery using existing techniques vs new demineralization method: 58% vs 78%; Norg recovery: 60% vs 78%). Chemicals used for the demineralization treatment did not affect δ2Hn values as revealed by spiking with deuterated water. The new demineralization method minimized organic matter losses and thus artificial H isotope fractionation, opening up the opportunity to use δ2Hn analyses of SOM as a new tool in paleoclimatology or geospatial forensics.

BACKGROUND The optimal crystalloid solution to use perioperatively in patients undergoing open radical cystectomy remains unclear. Many of the fluids used for intravenous hydration contain supraphysiologic concentrations of chloride, which can induce hyperchloremia and metabolic acidosis, resulting in renal vasoconstriction and decreased renal function. In addition, patients receiving less fluid and less sodium show faster recovery of gastrointestinal (GI) function after colonic surgery. METHODS AND DESIGN This is an investigator-initiated, single-center, randomized, controlled, parallel group trial with assessor-blinded outcome assessment, in the Department of Urology, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland. The study will involve 44 patients with bladder cancer scheduled for radical cystectomy and urinary diversion. The primary outcome is the duration between the end of surgery and the return of the GI function (first defecation). Secondary outcomes are fluid balance (body weight difference postoperatively versus preoperatively) and the incidence of kidney function disorders according to the Risk-Injury-Failure-Loss-End Stage Renal Disease (RIFLE classification). An equal number of patients are allocated to receive Ringerfundin® solution or a glucose/potassium-based balanced crystalloid solution as baseline infusion during the entire time that intravenous administration of fluid is necessary during the perioperative period. The randomized crystalloid solution is infused at a rate of 1 ml/kg/h until the bladder has been removed, followed by 3 ml/kg/h until the end of surgery. Postoperative hydration is identical in both groups and consists of 1,500 ml of the randomized crystalloid solution per 24 hours. Postoperative patient care is identical in both groups; patients are allowed to drink clear fluids immediately after surgery, and liquid diet is started on postoperative day 1, as well as active mobilization and the use of chewing gum. Body weight is measured daily in the morning. Time of first flatus and first defecation are recorded. DISCUSSION This trial assesses the benefits and harms of two different balanced crystalloid solutions for perioperative fluid management in patients undergoing open radical cystectomy with urinary diversion, with regard to return of GI function and effects on postoperative renal function. BACKGROUND AND AIMS Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) frequently manifests during childhood and adolescence. For providing and understanding a comprehensive picture of a patients' health status, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instruments are an essential complement to clinical symptoms and functional limitations. Currently, the IMPACT-III questionnaire is one of the most frequently used disease-specific HRQoL instrument among patients with IBD. However, there is a lack of studies examining the validation and reliability of this instrument. METHODS 146 paediatric IBD patients from the multicenter Swiss IBD paediatric cohort study database were included in the study. Medical and laboratory data were extracted from the hospital records. HRQoL data were assessed by means of standardized questionnaires filled out by the patients in a face-to-face interview. RESULTS The original six IMPACT-III domain scales could not be replicated in the current sample. A principal component analysis with the extraction of four factor scores revealed the most robust solution. The four factors indicated good internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha=.64-.86), good concurrent validity measured by correlations with the generic KIDSCREEN-27 scales and excellent discriminant validity for the dimension of physical functioning measured by HRQoL differences for active and inactive severity groups (p<.001, d=1.04). CONCLUSIONS This study with Swiss children with IBD indicates good validity and reliability for the IMPACT-III questionnaire. However, our findings suggest a slightly different factor structure than originally proposed. The IMPACT-III questionnaire can be recommended for its use in clinical practice. The factor structure should be further examined in other samples.

In this paper we study the problem of blind deconvolution. Our analysis is based on the algorithm of Chan and Wong [2] which popularized the use of sparse gradient priors via total variation. We use this algorithm because many methods in the literature are essentially adaptations of this framework. Such algorithm is an iterative alternating energy minimization where at each step either the sharp image or the blur function are reconstructed. Recent work of Levin et al. [14] showed that any algorithm that tries to minimize that same energy would fail, as the desired solution has a higher energy than the no-blur solution, where the sharp image is the blurry input and the blur is a Dirac delta. However, experimentally one can observe that Chan and Wong's algorithm converges to the desired solution even when initialized with the no-blur one. We provide both analysis and experiments to resolve this paradoxical conundrum. We find that both claims are right. The key to understanding how this is possible lies in the details of Chan and Wong's implementation and in how seemingly harmless choices result in dramatic effects. Our analysis reveals that the delayed scaling (normalization) in the iterative step of the blur kernel is fundamental to the convergence of the algorithm. This then results in a procedure that eludes the no-blur solution, despite it being a global minimum of the original energy. We introduce an adaptation of this algorithm and show that, in spite of its extreme simplicity, it is very robust and achieves a performance comparable to the state of the art.

An integrated framework of magnetostratigraphy, calcareous microfossil bio-events, cyclostratigraphy and d13C stratigraphy is established for the upper Campanian-Maastrichtian of ODP Hole 762C (Exmouth Plateau, Northwestern Australian margin). Bulk-carbonate d13C events and nannofossil bio-events have been recorded and plotted against magnetostratigraphy, and provided absolute ages using the results of the cyclostratigraphic study and the recent astronomical calibration of the Maastrichtian. Thirteen carbon-isotope events and 40 nannofossil bio-events are recognized and calibrated with cyclostratigraphy, as well as 14 previously published foraminifer events, thus constituting a solid basis for large-scale correlations. Results show that this site is characterized by a nearly continuous sedimentation from the upper Campanian to the K-Pg boundary, except for a 500 kyr gap in magnetochron C31n. Correlation of the age-calibrated d13C profile of ODP Hole 762C to the d13C profile of the Tercis les Bains section, Global Stratotype Section and Point of the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary (CMB), allowed a precise recognition and dating of this stage boundary at 72.15 ± 0.05 Ma. This accounts for a total duration of 6.15 ± 0.05 Ma for the Maastrichtian stage. Correlation of the boundary level with northwest Germany shows that the CMB as defined at the GSSP is ~800 kyr younger than the CMB as defined by Belemnite zonation in the Boreal realm. ODP Hole 762C is the first section to bear at the same time an excellent recovery of sediments throughout the upper Campanian-Maastrichtian, a precise and well-defined magnetostratigraphy, a high-resolution record of carbon isotope events and calcareous plankton biostratigraphy, and a cyclostratigraphic study tied to the La2010a astronomical solution. This section is thus proposed as an excellent reference for the upper Campanian-Maastrichtian in the Indian Ocean.

Astronomical tuning of sedimentary records to precise orbital solutions has led to unprecedented resolution in the geological time scale. However, the construction of a consistent astronomical time scale for the Paleocene is controversial due to uncertainties in the recognition of the exact number of 405-kyr eccentricity cycles and accurate correlation between key records. Here, we present a new Danian integrated stratigraphic framework using the land-based Zumaia and Sopelana hemipelagic sections from the Basque Basin and deep-sea records drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Legs 198 (Shatsky Rise, North Pacific) and 208 (Walvis Ridge, South Atlantic) that solves previous discrepancies. The new coherent stratigraphy utilises composite images from ODP cores, a new whole-rock d13C isotope record at Zumaia and new magnetostratigraphic data from Sopelana. We consistently observe 11 405-kyr eccentricity cycles in all studied Danian successions. We achieve a robust correlation of bioevents and stable isotope events between all studied sections at the ~100-kyr short-eccentricity level, a prerequisite for paleoclimatic interpretations. Comparison with and subsequent tuning of the records to the latest orbital solution La2011 provides astronomically calibrated ages of 66.022 ± 0.040 Ma and 61.607 ± 0.040 Ma for the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) and Danian-Selandian 105 (D-S) boundaries respectively. Low sedimentation rates appear common in all records in the mid-Danian interval, including conspicuous condensed intervals in the oceanic records that in the past have hampered the proper identification of cycles. The comprehensive interbasinal approach applied here reveals pitfalls in time scale construction, filtering techniques in particular, and indicates that some caution and scrutiny has to be applied when building orbital chronologies. Finally, the Zumaia section, already hosting the Selandian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), could serve as the global Danian unit stratotype in the future.
