We consider attractors A(eta), eta epsilon [0, 1], corresponding to a singularly perturbed damped wave equation u(tt) + 2 eta A(1/2)u(t) + au(t) + Au = f (u) in H-0(1)(Omega) x L-2 (Omega), where Omega is a bounded smooth domain in R-3. For dissipative nonlinearity f epsilon C-2(R, R) satisfying vertical bar f ``(s)vertical bar <= c(1 + vertical bar s vertical bar) with some c > 0, we prove that the family of attractors {A(eta), eta >= 0} is upper semicontinuous at eta = 0 in H1+s (Omega) x H-s (Omega) for any s epsilon (0, 1). For dissipative f epsilon C-3 (R, R) satisfying lim(vertical bar s vertical bar) (->) (infinity) f ``(s)/s = 0 we prove that the attractor A(0) for the damped wave equation u(tt) + au(t) + Au = f (u) (case eta = 0) is bounded in H-4(Omega) x H-3(Omega) and thus is compact in the Holder spaces C2+mu ((Omega) over bar) x C1+mu((Omega) over bar) for every mu epsilon (0, 1/2). As a consequence of the uniform bounds we obtain that the family of attractors {A(eta), eta epsilon [0, 1]} is upper and lower semicontinuous in C2+mu ((Omega) over bar) x C1+mu ((Omega) over bar) for every mu epsilon (0, 1/2). Abrus pulchellus seeds contain at least seven closely related and highly toxic type 2 ribosome-inactivating pulchellins, each consisting of a toxic A-chain linked to a sugar binding B-chain. In the present study, four pulchellin isoforms (termed P I, P II, P III and P IV) were isolated by affinity, ion exchange and chromatofocusing chromatographies, and investigated with respect to toxicity and sugar binding specificity. Half maximal inhibitory concentration and median lethal dose values indicate that P I and P II have similar toxicities and that both are more toxic to cultured HeLa cells and mice than P III and P IV. Interestingly, the secondary structural characteristics and sugar binding properties of the respective pairs of isoforms correlate well with the two toxicity levels, in that P I/P II and P III/P IV form two specific subgroups. From the deduced amino acids sequences of the four isoforms, it is clear that the highest similarity within each subgroup is found to occur within domain 2 of the B-chains, suggesting that the disparity in toxicity levels might be attributed to subtle differences in B-chain-mediated cell surface interactions that precede and determine toxin uptake pathways.

O objetivo da presente dissertação é o estudo da difusão de Ag e Al em uma matriz de α-Ti. Sua motivação principal se origina do fato de haver na literatura resultados contraditórios sobre o comportamento difusional desses elementos. Além disso, este estudo é necessário para dar continuidade à investigação sistemática da difusão de impurezas substitucionais em α-Ti, que vem sendo realizada pelo grupo de implantação iônica, a fim de estabelecer uma relação entre tamanho, valência e solubilidade dos elementos e seus coeficientes de difusão. A dependência do coeficiente de difusão com a temperatura para ambos elementos foi estudada nos intervalos de temperatura de 823 a 1073 K para a Ag e 948 a 1073 K para o Al. No caso da Ag foi usada a técnica de RBS para determinar os perfis de concentração, a qual tem uma alta resolução em profundidade (tipicamente 10nm), o que permite a determinação das baixas difusividades esperadas no presente experimento ( D ≤ 10-7 m2/s). No caso do Al foi usada a técnica de NRA, que preenche os mesmos requisitos citados anteriormente, com uma resolução em profundidade de aproximadamente 10 Å. As medidas realizadas mostraram que, para ambos os casos, os coeficientes de difusão seguem uma representação linear de Arrhenius. Foram encontrados os seguintes parâmetros característicos de difusão: Do = (1 ± 0,75) x10-4 m2s-1 e Q = 279 ± 6 kJ/mol para a Ag e Do = (1,4 ± 1,2) x10-2 m2s-1 e Q = 326 ± 10 kJ/mol para o Al, os quais são típicos de um comportamento substitucional normal. A comparação desse trabalho com trabalhos prévios não mostra evidência de relacionamento entre tamanho, valência e solubilidade dos elementos e seus coeficientes de difusão.

In this paper, we show that the widely used stationarity tests such as the KPSS test have power close to size in the presence of time-varying unconditional variance. We propose a new test as a complement of the existing tests. Monte Carlo experiments show that the proposed test possesses the following characteristics: (i) In the presence of unit root or a structural change in the mean, the proposed test is as powerful as the KPSS and other tests; (ii) In the presence a changing variance, the traditional tests perform badly whereas the proposed test has high power comparing to the existing tests; (iii) The proposed test has the same size as traditional stationarity tests under the null hypothesis of stationarity. An application to daily observations of return on US Dollar/Euro exchange rate reveals the existence of instability in the unconditional variance when the entire sample is considered, but stability is found in subsamples.

Hop(HumuluslupulusL.,Cannabaceaefamily)isprizedforitsessentialoilcontents,usedin beer production and, more recently, in biological and pharmacological applications. In this work,a methodinvolvingheadspace solid-phase microextractionand gas chromatography– mass spectrometry was developed and optimized to establish the terpenoid (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes) metabolomic pattern of hop-essential oil derived from Saaz variety as a mean to explore this matrix as a powerful biological source for newer, more selective, biodegradable and naturally produced antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. Different parameters affecting terpenoid metabolites extraction by headspace solid-phase microextraction were considered and optimized: type of fiber coatings, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, and sample agitation. In the optimized method, analytes were extracted for 30 min at 40 C in the sample headspace with a 50/30 m divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane coating fiber. The methodology allowed the identification of a total of 27 terpenoid metabolites, representing 92.5% of the total Saaz hop-essential oil volatile terpenoid composition. The headspace composition was dominated by monoterpenes (56.1%, 13 compounds), sesquiterpenes (34.9%, 10), oxygenated monoterpenes (1.41%, 3), and hemiterpenes (0.04%, 1) some of which can probably contribute to the hop of Saaz variety aroma. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the main metabolites are the monoterpene -myrcene (53.0±1.1% of the total volatile fraction), and the cyclic sesquiterpenes, -humulene (16.6 ± 0.8%), and -caryophyllene (14.7 ± 0.4%), which together represent about 80% of the total volatile fraction from the hop-essential oil. Thesefindingssuggestthatthismatrixcanbeexploredasapowerfulbiosourceofterpenoid metabolites.

The direct use of natural gas makes the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) potentially more competitive with the current energy conversions technologies. The Intermediate Temperature SOFC (IT-SOFC) offer several advantages over the High Temperature SOFC (HT-SOFC), which includes better thermal compatibility among components, fast start with lower energy consumption, manufacture and operation cost reduction. The CeO2 based materials are alternatives to the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) to application in SOFC, as they have higher ionic conductivity and less ohmic losses comparing to YSZ, and they can operate at lower temperatures (500-800°C). Ceria has been doped with a variety of cations, although, the Gd3+ has the ionic radius closest to the ideal one to form solid solution. These electrolytes based in ceria require special electrodes with a higher performance and chemical and termomechanical compatibility. In this work compounds of gadolinia-doped ceria, Ce1-xGdxO2-&#948; (x = 0,1; 0,2 and 0,3), used as electrolytes, were synthesized by polymeric precursors method, Pechini, as well as the composite material NiO - Ce0,9Gd0,1O1,95, used as anode, also attained by oxide mixture method, mixturing the powders of the both phases calcinated already. The materials were characterized by X ray diffraction, dilatometry and scanning electronic microscopy. The refinement of the diffraction data indicated that all the Ce1-xGdxO2-&#948; powders were crystallized in a unique cubic phase with fluorite structure, and the composite synthesized by Pechini method produced smaller crystallite size in comparison with the same material attained by oxide mixture method. All the produced powders had nanometric characteristics. The composite produced by Pechini method has microstructural characteristics that can increase the triple phase boundaries (TPB) in the anode, improving the cell efficiency, as well as reducing the mass transport mechanism effect that provokes anode degradation

Given the environmental concern over global warming that occurs mainly by emission of CO2 from the combustion of petroleum, coal and natural gas research focused on alternative and clean energy generation has been intensified. Among these, the highlight the solid oxide fuel cell intermediate temperature (IT-SOFC). For application as electrolyte of the devices doped based CeO2 with rare earth ions (TR+ 3) have been quite promising because they have good ionic conductivity and operate at relatively low temperatures (500-800 ° C). In this work, studied the Ce1-xEuxO2-&#948; (x = 0,1, 0,2 and 0,3), solid solutions synthesized by the polymeric precursor method to be used as solid electrolyte. It was also studied the processing steps of these powders (milling, compaction and two step sintering) in order to obtain dense sintered pellets with reduced grain size and homogeneous microstructure. For this, the powders were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution and scanning electrons microscopy, since the sintered samples were characterized by dilatometry, scanning electrons microscopy, density and grain size measurements. By x-ray diffraction, it was verified the formation of the solid solution for all compositions. Crystallites in the nanometric scale were found for both sintering routes but the two step sintering presented significant reduction in the average grain size

Were synthesized different ferrites NixZn1-xFe2O4 (0,4 ≤ x ≤ 0,6) compositions by using citrate precursor method. Initially, the precursors citrates of iron, nickel and zinc were mixed and homogenized. The stoichiometric compositions were calcined at 350°C without atmosphere control and the calcined powders were pressed in pellets and toroids. The pressed material was sintered from 1100º up to 1200ºC in argon atmosphere. The calcined powders were characterized by XRD, TGA/DTG, FTIR, SEM and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). All sintered samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, VSM and measurements of magnetic permeability and loss factor were obtained. It was formed pure ferromagnetic phase at all used temperatures. The Rietveld analyses allowed to calculate the cations level occupation and the crystallite size. The analyses obtained nanometric crystals (12-20 nm) to the calcined powder. By SEM, the sintered samples shows grains sizes from 1 to 10 μm. Sintered densities (ρ) were measured by the Archimedes method and with increasing Zn content, the bulk density decrease. The better magnetization results (105-110 emu/g) were obtained for x=0,6 at all sintering temperatures. The hysteresis shows characteristics of soft magnetic material. Two magnetization processes were considered, superparamagnetism at low temperature and the magnetic domains formation at high temperatures. The sintered toroids presents relative magnetic permeability (μr) from 7 to 32 and loss factor (tan&#948;) of about 1. The frequency response of toroids range from 0,3 kHz to 0,2 GHz. The composition x=0,5 presents both greater μr and tan&#948; values and x=0,6 the most broad range of frequency response. Various microstructural factors show influence on the behavior of μr and tan&#948;, such as: grain size, porosity across grain boundary and inside the grain, grain boundary content and domain walls movement during the process of magnetization at high frequency studies (0,3kKz 0,2 GHz)

We report on a study of the CH3OD molecule in a search for new far-infrared (FIR) laser lines. For optical pumping of large offset vibrational absorption transitions, a continuous-wave waveguide CO2 laser with 300 MHz tunability around each line was used for the first time. As a consequence, 17. new far-infrared laser emissions were observed. For these lines, we also present data on wavelength, intensity, offset, relative polarization, and optimum operation pressure.

Different compositions of Ni0,5-xCuxZn0,5Fe2O4 and Ni0,5-xCoxZn0,5Fe2O4 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 were synthesized ferrite y the citrate precursor method. The stoichiometric compositions were calcined in air at 350°C and then pressed into pellets and toroids. The pressed samples were sintered at temperatures of 1000, 1050 and 1100°C/3h in air control at the speed of heating and cooling. The calcined powders were characterized by XRD, TGA / DTG, FTIR, SEM and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and the sintered samples by XRD, SEM, MAV, density and measurements of permeability and magnetic losses. There was pure phase formation ferrimagnetism applied at all temperatures except for A-I composition at all sintering temperatures and A-II only at a temperature of 1100°C. Crystallite sizes were obtained by Rietveld analysis, nanometer size from 11 to 20 nm for the calcined powders. For SEM, the sintered samples showed grain size between 1 and 10 micrometers. Bulk density (ρ) of sintered material presented to the Families almost linear behavior with increasing temperature and a tendency to decrease with increasing concentration of copper, different behavior of the B Family, where the increase in temperature decreased the density. The magnetic measurements revealed the powder characteristics of a soft ferrimagnetic material. Two processes of magnetization were considered, the superparamagnetism at low temperatures (350°C) and the formation of magnetic domains at higher temperatures. Obtaining the best parameters for P and B-II magnetic ferrites at high temperatures. The sintered material at 1000°C showed a relative permeability (μ) from 50 to 800 for the A Family and from 10 to 600 for the B Family. The samples sintered at 1100°C, B Family showed a variation from 10 to 1000 and the magnetic loss (tan &#948;) of A and B Families, around of 1. The frequency response of the toroidal core is in the range of 0.3 kHz. Several factors contribute to the behavior of microstructure considering the quantities μ and tan &#948;, such as the grain size, inter-and intragranular porosity, amount of grain boundary and the aspects of the dynamics of domain walls at high frequencies.

Avaliaram-se 20 cordeiros machos ¾ mestiços Suffolk submetidos a dietas isoprotéicas (21% proteína bruta) e isoenergéticas (2,9 Mcal EM/kg MS), nas formas farelada e peletizada, e abatidos com 26 e 28 kg de peso vivo. Os cordeiros tiveram acesso ao creep feeding, permanecendo com as ovelhas até atingirem o peso de abate. A ração peletizada promoveu maior rendimento de carcaça quente (54,18% para ração peletizada e 52,04% para ração farelada) e maior rendimento verdadeiro (58,37% peletizada e 56,66% farelada). O peso vivo final não interferiu nos pesos das carcaças quente e fria (12,79 e 13,05 kg para 26 e 28 kg de peso vivo final, respectivamente). Não houve interferência da forma física da ração e do peso vivo final dos animais na área do olho de lombo e no comprimento do lombo. A largura do lombo e a máxima espessura de gordura foram maiores nas carcaças dos animais que receberam ração peletizada e a mínima espessura foi inferior nos animais abatidos com 26 kg de peso vivo (1,48 e 1,77 cm para os cordeiros abatidos com 26 e 28 kg, respectivamente). Concluiu-se que o uso da ração peletizada proporcionou aos cordeiros melhoria dos índices de rendimento de carcaça quente, rendimento biológico, profundidade do lombo e índice de compacidade da carcaça. O peso vivo de 26 kg apresentou-se como o mais satisfatório para o abate de cordeiros, por apresentar características de carcaça semelhantes àqueles abatidos com 28 kg.
