In the title compound, [Ni(C(20)H(17)N(2)O(2)S)(2)], the NiII atom is coordinated by the S and O atoms of two 1,1-dibenzyl-3-[(furan-2-yl)carbonyl]thioureate ligands in a distorted square-planar geometry. The two O and two S atoms are mutually cis to each other. The Ni-S and Ni-O bond lengths lie within the range of those found in related structures. The dihedral angle between the planes of the two chelating rings is 20.33 (6)degrees.

We present an extensive study of the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of the oxyborate Co(3)O(2)BO(3). This is carried out through x-ray diffraction, static and dynamic magnetic susceptibilities, and specific heat experiments in single crystals in a large temperature range. The structure of Co(3)O(2)BO(3) is composed of subunits in the form of three-leg ladders where Co ions with mixed valency are located. The magnetic properties of this Co ludwigite are determined by a competition between superexchange and double-exchange interactions in the low-dimensional subunits. We discuss the observed physical properties in comparison with the only other known homometallic ludwigite, Fe(3)O(2)BO(3). The latter presents a structural distortion in the ladders and two magnetic transitions. Both features are not found in the present study of the Co ludwigite. The reason for these differences in the structural and magnetic behavior of two apparently similar compounds is discussed.

The structure of laser glasses in the system (Y(2)O(3))(0.2){(Al(2)O(3))(x))(B(2)O(3))(0.8-x)} (0.15 <= x <= 0.40) has been investigated by means of (11)B, (27)Al, and (89)Y solid state NMR as well as electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) of Yb-doped samples. The latter technique has been applied for the first time to an aluminoborate glass system. (11)B magic-angle spinning (MAS)-NMR spectra reveal that, while the majority of the boron atoms are three-coordinated over the entire composition region, the fraction of three-coordinated boron atoms increases significantly with increasing x. Charge balance considerations as well as (11)B NMR lineshape analyses suggest that the dominant borate species are predominantly singly charged metaborate (BO(2/2)O(-)), doubly charged pyroborate (BO(1/2)(O(-))(2)), and (at x = 0.40) triply charged orthoborate groups. As x increases along this series, the average anionic charge per trigonal borate group increases from 1.38 to 2.91. (27)Al MAS-NMR spectra show that the alumina species are present in the coordination states four, five and six, and the fraction of four-coordinated Al increases markedly with increasing x. All of the Al coordination states are in intimate contact with both the three-and the four-coordinate boron species and vice versa, as indicated by (11)B/(27)Al rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) data. These results are consistent with the formation of a homogeneous, non-segregated glass structure. (89)Y solid state NMR spectra show a significant chemical shift trend, reflecting that the second coordination sphere becomes increasingly ""aluminate-like'' with increasing x. This conclusion is supported by electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) data of Yb-doped glasses, which indicate that both borate and aluminate species participate in the medium range structure of the rare-earth ions, consistent with a random spatial distribution of the glass components.

The free H(2)xspa ligands [xspa = pspa, Clpspa, tspa or fspa where p = 3-(phenyl), Clp = 3-(2-chlorophenyl), t = 3-(2-thienyl), f = 3-(2-furyl) and spa = 2-sulfanylpropenoato], their Zn(II) complexes of formula [HQ](2)[Zn(xspa)(2)] (HQ=diisopropylammonium) and the Cd(II) equivalents were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis and by IR, Raman and NMR ((1)H, (13)C) spectroscopy. X-Ray studies of the crystal structures of [HQ](2)[Zn(pspa)(2)], [HQ](2)[Zn(Clpspa)2], [HQ](2)[Zn(tspa)(2)] and [HQ](2)[Zn(fspa)(2)] show that the zinc atom is coordinated to two O atoms and two S atoms of the ligands in a distorted tetrahedral ZnO(2)S(2) environment. In the structures of [HQ](2)[Cd(pspa)(2)] and [HQ](2)[Cd(Clpspa)(2)] the cadmium atom is coordinated to three S atoms and two carboxylato O atoms of the ligands in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal environment. The interchange of ligands between Zn( II) and Cd( II) was studied by (113)Cd NMR spectroscopy. The in vitro protective effect of H(2)xspa and their Zn( II) complexes against Cd toxicity was investigated using the human hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cell line and the pig renal proximal tubule LLC-PK1 cell line. The incorporation of Zn( II) was found to be relevant in the case of H(2)pspa, with an increase observed in the cell viability of the LCC-PK1 cells with respect to the value for the free ligand.

The piperidone ring in the title compound, C12H15NO3S, has a slightly distorted half-chair conformation with the methyl, carbonyl and phenylsulfonyl ring substituents occupying equatorial, equatorial and axial positions, respectively. Molecules are connected into centrosymmetric dimers via C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions and these associate into layers via C-H center dot center dot center dot O-S contacts. Further C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions involving both the carbonyl and sulfonyl O atoms consolidate the crystal packing by providing connections between the layers.

Silicon carbide ceramics (SiC) are used in different applications in the engineering area due to the excellent properties, mainly in high temperatures. They are usually obtained by liquid-phase sintering enabling to form volatile products and, consequently, defects. The present work aims at studying the obtention of SiC ceramics by spontaneous infiltration using a eutectic composition of the Al(2)O(3)/Y(2)O(3), AIN/Y(2)O(3), Al(2)O(3)/Sm(2)O(3), AlN/Sm(2)O(3), Al(2)O(3)/RE(2)O(3) and AlN/RE(2)O(3) Systems. RE(2)O(3) is the concentrate of the rare-earth oxide obtained from Xenotime ore. Infiltration tests were carried out in argon atmosphere, graphite crucibles, in several temperatures near the melting point of each system, varying from 2.5 to 60 min. It was observed that Al(2)O(3)/Y(2)O(3), Al(2)O(3)/SM(2)O(3), AlN/SM(2)O(3) and Al(2)O(3)/RE(2)O(3) systems do not infiltrate appropriately and the AlN/Y(2)O(3) and AlN/RE(2)O(3) systems infiltrated spontaneously more than 20 mm; however, the first one presented a higher degree of infiltration, approximately 97%. Silicon nitride ceramics were sintered using Y(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) or E(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) (E(2)O(3) denotes a mixed oxide Of Y(2)O(3) and rare-earth oxides) as sintering additives. The intergranular phases formed after sintering was investigated using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The use of synchrotron radiation enabled high angular resolution and a high signal to background ratio. Besides the appearance Of beta-Si(3)N(4) phase the intergranular phases Y(3)Al(5)O(12) (YAG) and Y(2)SiO(5) were identified in both samples. The refinement of the structural parameters by the Rietveld method indicated similar crystalline structure Of beta-Si(3)N(4) for both systems used as sintering additive. On the other hand, the intergranular phases Y(3)Al(5)O(12) and Y(2)SiO(5) shown a decrease of the lattice parameters, when E(2)O(3) was used as additive, indicating the formation of solid solutions of E(3)Al(5)O(12) and E(2)SiO(5), respectively. We performed Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of internal residual stresses in monolithic samples of a newly developed Li(2)O-Al(2)O(3)-SiO(2) (LAS) glass-ceramic produced by sintering and in a commercial LAS glass-ceramic, CERAN (R), produced by the traditional crystal nucleation and growth treatments. The elastic constants were measured by instrumented indentation and a pulse-echo technique. The thermal expansion coefficient of virgilite was determined by high temperature XRD and dilatometry. The c-axis contracts with the increasing temperature whereas the a-axis does not vary significantly. Microcracking of the microstructure affects the thermal expansion coefficients measured by dilatometry and thermal expansion hysteresis is observed for the sintered glass-ceramic as well as for CERAN (R). The measured internal stress is quite low for both glass-ceramics and can be explained by theoretical modeling if the high volume fraction of the crystalline phase (virgilite) is considered. Using a modified Green model, the calculated critical (glass) island diameter for spontaneous cracking agreed with experimental observations. The experimental data collected also allowed the calculation of the critical crystal grain diameters for grain-boundary microcracking due to the anisotropy of thermal expansion of virgilite and for microcracking in the residual glass phase surrounding the virgilite particles. All these parameters are important for the successful microstructural design of sintered glass-ceramics.

In this work, the oxidation of the model pollutant phenol has been studied by means of the O(3), O(3)-UV, and O(3)-H(2)O(2) processes. Experiments were carried out in a fed-batch system to investigate the effects of initial dissolved organic carbon concentration, initial, ozone concentration in the gas phase, the presence or absence of UVC radiation, and initial hydrogen peroxide concentration. Experimental results were used in the modeling of the degradation processes by neural networks in order to simulate DOC-time profiles and evaluate the relative importance of process variables.

We have isolated and characterized ol-conotoxin EpI, a novel sulfated peptide from the venom of the molluscivorous snail, Conus episcopatus, The peptide was classified as an cy-conotoxin based on sequence, disulfide connectivity, and pharmacological target. EpI has ho mology to sequences of previously described cu-conotoxins, particularly PnIA, PnIB, and ImI, However, EpI differs from previously reported conotoxins in that it has a sulfotyrosine residue, identified by amino acid analysis and mass spectrometry, Native EpI was shown to coelute with synthetic EpI, The peptide sequence is consistent with most, but not all, recognized criteria for predicting tyrosine sulfation sites in proteins and peptides, The activities of synthetic EpI and its unsulfated analogue [Tyr(15)]EpI were similar. Both peptides caused competitive inhibition of nicotine action on bovine adrenal chromaffin cells (neuronal nicotinic ACh receptors) but had no effect on the rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm (muscle nicotinic ACh receptors), Both EpI and [Tyr(15)]EpI partly inhibited acetylcholine-evoked currents in isolated parasympathetic neurons of rat intracardiac ganglia, These results indicate that EPI and [Tyr(15)]EpI selectively inhibit alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Conotoxins are valuable probes of receptors and ion channels because of their small size and highly selective activity. alpha-Conotoxin EpI, a 16-residue peptide from the mollusk-hunting Conus episcopatus, has the amino acid sequence GCCSDPRCNMNNPDY(SO3H)C-NH2 and appears to be an extremely potent and selective inhibitor of the alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4 neuronal subtypes of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). The desulfated form of EpI ([Tyr(15)]EpI) has a potency and selectivity for the nAChR receptor similar to those of EpI. Here we describe the crystal structure of [Tyr(15)]EpI solved at a resolution of 1.1 Angstrom using SnB. The asymmetric unit has a total of 284 non-hydrogen atoms, making this one of the largest structures solved de novo try direct methods. The [Tyr(15)]EpI structure brings to six the number of alpha-conotoxin structures that have been determined to date. Four of these, [Tyr(15)]EpI, PnIA, PnIB, and MII, have an alpha 4/7 cysteine framework and are selective for the neuronal subtype of the nAChR. The structure of [Tyr(15)]EpI has the same backbone fold as the other alpha 4/7-conotoxin structures, supporting the notion that this conotoxin cysteine framework and spacing give rise to a conserved fold. The surface charge distribution of [Tyr(15)]EpI is similar to that of PnIA and PnIB but is likely to be different from that of MII, suggesting that [Tyr(15)]EpI and MII may have different binding modes for the same receptor subtype.

The alpha-conotoxins, a class of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antagonists, are emerging as important probes of the role played by different nAChR subtypes in cell function and communication, In this study, the native alpha-conotoxins PnIA and PnIB were found to cause concentration-dependent inhibition of the ACh-induced current in all rat parasympathetic neurons examined, with IC50 values of 14 and 33 nM, and a maximal reduction in current amplitude of 87% and 71%, respectively. The modified alpha-conotoxin [N11S]PnIA reduced the ACh-induced current with an IC50 value of 375 nM and a maximally effective concentration caused 91% block, [A10L]PnIA was the most potent inhibitor, reducing the ACh-induced current in similar to 80% of neurons, with an IC50 value of 1.4 nM and 46% maximal block of the total current, The residual current was not inhibited further by alpha-bungarotoxin, but was further reduced by the cu-conotoxins PnIA or PnIB, and by mecamylamine. H-1 NMR studies indicate that PnIA, PnIB, and the analogues, [A10L]PnIA and [N11S]PnIA, have identical backbone structures. We propose that positions 10 and II of PnIA and PnIB influence potency and determine selectivity among alpha 7 and other nAChR subtypes, including alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4, Four distinct components of the nicotinic ACh-induced current in mammalian parasympathetic neurons have been dissected with these conopeptides.

Free field and twisted parafermionic representations of twisted su(3)(k)((2)) current algebra are obtained. The corresponding twisted Sugawara energy-momentum tensor is given in terms of three (beta, gamma) pairs and two scalar fields and also in terms of twisted parafermionic currents and one scalar field. Two screening currents of the first kind are presented in terms of the free fields.

Novel (E)-3-aryl-4-benzylidene-8-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1 H-xanthene-1,9(2H)-diones are prepared by the cyclization of (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones efficiently catalyzed with boron tribromide. The (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones are obtained from the Baker–Venkataraman rearrangement of (E,E)-2-acetyl-1,3-phenylene bis(3-phenylacrylate), which is greatly improved under microwave irradiation.
