La Tesis Doctoral está organizada de la siguiente manera, la primera parte es la introducción e incluye los capítulos 1 y 2 en los que se plantea la problemática general puerto-ciudad y los antecedentes históricos en la evolución de los puertos y su relación con las ciudades. A continuación en el capítulo 3 se realiza una revisión de literatura repasando algunos de los estudios e investigaciones que han inspirado esta Tesis Doctoral. Posteriormente en el capítulo 4 se exponen las bases de partida que sirve para fundamentar la propuesta metodológica que se expone en el capítulo 5 basada en la aplicación del método AHP sobre una relación de índices e indicadores producto de la investigación. Finalmente, el capítulo 6 presenta las conclusiones y las líneas de investigación que quedan abiertas. This Thesis is organized as follows, the first part is the introduction and includes chapters 1 and 2 in which the general problem and historical background of the port-city relationship are presented. Then in chapter 3 a literature review is done by reviewing some of the studies and researches that have inspired this research. Later in chapter 5 the methodology based on the application of AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method is formulated. This methodology uses a list of indicators deduced from the previous chapters. Finally, Chapter 6 presents the conclusions and suggests future research.

Data on distribution of organic carbon and phenols near the top of Kandalaksha Gulf, one of the largest gulfs of the White Sea, are presented. Investigations carried out the port city of Kandalasksha indicate that bottom sediments of the area adjoining the port contain synthetic phenols and have elevated concentrations of organic carbon. But in general sediments of this part of the gulf have near-normal concentration and composition of both phenols and organic carbon. This indicates that ecological situation in this area remains near-optimal.

No momento em que o jornalismo na web enfrenta o desafio de lidar com o fenômeno da desterritorialização da audiência, e ao mesmo tempo com a manutenção de sua marca identitária territorial, esta tese explora a relação da cultura social local com o habitus profissional considerando que o jornalismo é uma atividade social de produção simbólica. No interior dessa temática procura responder se existe diferença significativa do webjornalismo praticado em cidades de culturas sociais distintas, ou se o habitus profissional sobrepujaria essa diferença. Para esse intento foi realizado um estudo comparativo multicasos com jornalistas brasileiros e portugueses de quatro webjornais - Folha Online (São Paulo-SP), Tribuna do Norte (Natal-RN), Jornal de Notícias (Cidade do Porto) e Correio do Minho (Braga). O instrumental metodológico contou com: entrevistas, questionário, mapeamento das características e levantamento de manchetes das home pages. A tese se concentra em compreender o cenário e as inter-relações dos fatores envolvidos no fenômeno da imbricação: prática do webjornalismo e cultura da sociedade. Resultados da pesquisa revelaram, entre outros pontos, que a maioria dos profissionais concorda que a prática do jornalismo na web é muito afeita ao journaliste assis que não vai a campo, permanecendo na redação para tratar apenas o material recebido. Apontou ainda que e as matérias alinhadas ao valor notícia proximidade são pouco presentes nos webjornais considerados de perfil nacional. A principal conclusão é que, embora o webjornalismo siga em alguns pontos os padrões técnicos da cibercomunicação, sua prática diferencia-se ao absorver as características próprias da cultura social da cidade/região onde está situada a sede da empresa jornalística detentora do produto.

La actual ciudad de Akko in Israel, ha tenido muchos nombres a lo largo de los siglos de su prolongado asentamiento. El nombre de Acre, con el que se le conoce en el mundo Occidental, es el residuo del nombre de San Juan de Acre que le dieron sus habitantes cruzados en el s. XII de la era Cristiana. Sin embargo, el nombre de ‘Akko y sus derivados, tienen una larga historia. Bajo tal nombre, aparece ya en las fuentes escritas de comienzos el II Milenio a.C., cuando e produjo la primera urbanización del lugar. Se mantuvo como ‘Akko, ‘Ake, etc…a lo largo de los siglos posteriors, a pesar de los inentos de varios dirigentes de cambiarelo. El asentamiento se trasladó, a causa de los cambios en la línea de costa y del río Na’aman o Belos, desde el antiguo Tel Akko a la bahía, en la que se estableció un puerto artificial,reconstruido y renovado reiteradamente durante más de 2000 años. El primer nombre conocido del sitio original del asentamiento, el tell, data de época de los cruzados. Este sufrió una alteración de su nombre, reflejo de la transformación de la historia de Akko, en la que la intervención occidental (europea9, jugó un papel decisivo.

En este artículo se explora el impacto socio-económico de la crisis internacional de 1929 en Senegal y más concretamente en la ciudad-puerto de Dakar. Se analizan las consecuencias de la dependencia externa y la extroversión económica que caracterizaba a las estructuras productivas coloniales, destacando también la respuesta organizada de los movimientos sociales africanos. Por otra parte, se estudia la evolución de las infraestructuras y actividad portuaria, observando la metropolización regional de Dakar durante este periodo.

Sunnybank represents a distinctly Australian take on the classic ‘Chinatown’ – or indeed other ethic community enclaves such as ‘little Italy’, ‘little Bombay’, ‘little Athens’ and so on. In the Northern Hemisphere these tended to grow up in the dense working class neighbourhoods of industrial cities, especially in port cities like Liverpool, London, New York and San Francisco. The existing Chinatowns of Sydney and Melbourne, and to some extent Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, are of this variety. In the late 1970s, with the growth of suburbanisation and the de-industrialisation and consequent dereliction of the ‘inner city’, these ethnic communities were one of the few signs of life in the city. Apart from the daily commute into the CBD, business with the city council or a trip to the big shopping streets these areas were one of the few reasons for visiting city centres stigmatised by urban decay and petty crime.

Introduction

Belfast has been a focus of academic attention for the last forty years with most interest centred on various aspects of ‘the Troubles’. Where there has been interest in the built environment, it has largely been about how the ‘security situation’ impacted directly on architecture and on the design and layout of social housing. This paper seeks to go beyond this to explore how the political- administrative culture of ‘the Troubles’ interacted with ‘normal’ market forces to shape the central area of the city, and to consider the responses of a recently formed activist group, known as the Forum for Alternative Belfast (hereafter referred to as the Forum). The paper is written by three of the directors of the Forum.1 Moreover, the empirical research presented here was undertaken by the Forum as part of a campaign to address issues relating to the design, layout and quality of Belfast’s built environment. In the longstanding tradition of participant observation working within an action-research paradigm, the participants have attempted to offer an account that is evidentially and purposefully selfcritical and reflective. It is of course recognised that while this approach offers many positive attributes, such as phenomenological access through immersion in the project, it also has the potential to bring compromise on research detachment and objectivity.2 To address the latter, the authors have attempted
to avoid polemical argument, and to support claims with primary or secondary research evidence. The authors also acknowledge that action-research has a chequered history; however, they would argue
that their approach is faithful to a concept that sees ‘research’ defined as understanding and ‘action’ defined as seeking change. The Forum’s very purpose is to seek change, but to do this requires evidence, collaboration and demonstration. And in this sense, it is a learning process for all participants, including the research activists, government officials, community organisations and students. The authors also recognise the complexity of factors that affect urban management and change, particularly in a city such as Belfast, which has had to cope with political violence for over thirty years. And they appreciate that in the context of conflict, governance is skewed to cope with political realities. Hamdi reminds us, however, that in practice there is an ‘important dialectic between top-down planning, with its formal and designed laws and structures, and bottom-up selforganizing collectivism—those “quantum and emergent systems” which Jane Jacobs argued long ago give cities their life and order.’3

This paper looks at the recent history of Hulme, Manchester, which during the 1980s was home to many of the most successful bands of the post-punk era. This flourishing of underground music was not planned, however. It emerged, through a complex network of urban forces, some physical, some social. The paper develops the concept of the ‘compost city’ a laissez-faire approach to the management of urban culture, which is oppositional to the current vogue for more hands-on cultural industries management.

In an age of depleting oil reserves and increasing energy demand, humanity faces a stalemate between environmentalism and politics, where crude oil is traded at record highs yet the spotlight on being ‘green’ and sustainable is stronger than ever. A key theme on today’s political agenda is energy independence from foreign nations, and the United Kingdom is bracing itself for nuclear renaissance which is hoped will feed the rapacious centralised system that the UK is structured upon. But what if this centralised system was dissembled, and in its place stood dozens of cities which grow and monopolise from their own energy? Rather than one dominant network, would a series of autonomous city-based energy systems not offer a mutually profitable alternative? Bio-Port is a utopian vision of a ‘Free Energy City’ set in Liverpool, where the old dockyards, redundant space, and the Mersey Estuary have been transformed into bio-productive algae farms. Bio-Port Free Energy City is a utopian ideal, where energy is superfluous; in fact so abundant that meters are obsolete. The city functions as an energy generator and thrives from its own product with minimal impact upon the planet it inhabits. Algaculture is the fundamental energy source, where a matrix of algae reactors swamp the abandoned dockyards; which themselves have been further expanded and reclaimed from the River Mersey. Each year, the algae farm is capable of producing over 200 million gallons of bio-fuel, which in-turn can produce enough electricity to power almost 2 million homes. The metabolism of Free-Energy City is circular and holistic, where the waste products of one process are simply the inputs of a new one. Livestock farming – once traditionally a high-carbon countryside exercise has become urbanised. Cattle are located alongside the algae matrix, and waste gases emitted by farmyards and livestock are largely sequestered by algal blooms or anaerobically converted to natural gas. Bio-Port Free Energy City mitigates the imbalances between ecology and urbanity, and exemplifies an environment where nature and the human machine can function productively and in harmony with one another. According to James Lovelock, our population has grown in number to the point where our presence is perceptibly disabling the planet, but in order to reverse the effects of our humanist flaws, it is vital that new eco-urban utopias are realised.

This paper explores the changing relationship between knowledge creation and city centre spaces, focusing on the relocation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) into urban centres and the ensuing economic, social and cultural regeneration. Using the Ulster University's relocation to Belfast city centre, the paper highlights the opportunities a new anchor institution can offer a deprived inner city community. This case study draws attention to the drivers of university relocation and the untapped potential for regeneration in city centres such as Belfast, Northern Ireland. The paper looks to the future and questions whether large-scale city projects, such as the university relocation, can truly form connections with their new neighbouring inner city communities while contending with the mounting pressure of reduced government resources.

In this period he was particularly interested in the 'inner city' and how problems of deprivation, unemployment, poor housing, and increasingly immigration might best be addressed by public policy. Each chapter in the book reviews Sir Peter's publications over a long and distinguished career in research and policy advice to government in honour of his 80th birthday in 2013.

Project planning and architectural management of a port area should include many variables, it must be in harmony with its environment and its historical development as the key to successful integration. This article explains the elements which should be taken into account when doing such planning by describing the proposal presented on the ?Concurso public internacional de ideas para proyectar la ordenación urbanística y arquitectónica del área central del puerto de Vigo?, with the aim of sharing comprehensive applied design philosofy, it will inspire and help future designers. Creative imagination is great added value to engineering creations, but should not overwhelm functionality and sustainability, but to be in harmony with them. The maximum aesthetic expression in engineering is achieved as the product of the conceptual elegance of the functionality of the structures.
