Polymer supports and polymeric complexes are highly versatile and they are successfully employed as efficient reagents, substrates and catalysts. Recently there observed a growing interest in the synthesis of tailor-made polymer supports and functionalized polymers for the preparation of metal complexes for various applications. They have the combination of properties due to the macromolecular structure as well as due to the reactivity of the functional group. An interesting feature of functional polymers is their affinity towards metal ions. Therefore the synthesis, characterization and application of such polymeric complexes have great scientific and analytical importance. In this investigation three series of polymeric complexes of transition metal ions are prepared from three schiff bases. All the complexes and polymeric schiff bases were characterized by analytical, spectral and thermal methods The thesis consist of six chapters. The first chapter contains an introduction and a brief review on application of polymer supports, polymer supported ligands and complexes. The second chapter gives the details of reagents and instruments used and the procedure adopted for the preparation of ligands and complexes. The third chapter explains the methods employed for characterization and the results are also discussed. The fourth chapter gives a detailed study of metal ion removal using ligands whereas the fifth chapter describes the development of the Cu” ion sensor electrode. The sixth chapter is the summary of the thesis and references are presented at the end.

Nitroxyl radicals such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) are highly selective oxidation catalysts for the conversion of primary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes. In this study, direct tethering of TEMPO units onto linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has afforded macromolecular catalysts that exhibit solubility in both aqueous and organic solvents. Recovery of the dissolved polymer-supported catalyst has been carried out by precipitation with a suitable solvent such as diethyl ether. The high catalyst activities and selectivities associated traditionally with nitroxyl-mediated oxidations of alcohols are retained by the series of "linker-less" linear PEG-TEMPO catalysts in which the TEMPO moiety is coupled directly to the PEG support. Although the selectivity remains unaltered, upon recycling of the linker-less polymer-supported catalysts, extended reaction times are required to maintain high yields of the desired carbonyl compounds. Alternatively, attachment of two nitroxyl radicals onto each functionalized PEG chain terminus via a 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid linker affords branched polymer-supported catalysts. In stark contrast to the linker-less catalysts, these branched nitroxyls exhibit catalytic activities up to five times greater than 4-methoxy-TEMPO alone under similar conditions. In addition, minimal decrease in catalytic activity is observed upon recycling of these branched macromolecular catalysts via solvent-induced precipitation. The high catalytic activities and preservation of activity upon recycling of these branched systems is attributed to enhanced regeneration of the nitroxyl species as a result of intramolecular syn-proportionation.

Most of the hydrogen production processes are designed for large-scale industrial uses and are not suitable for a compact hydrogen device to be used in systems like solid polymer fuel cells. Integrating the reaction step, the gas purification and the heat supply can lead to small-scale hydrogen production systems. The aim of this research is to study the influence of several reaction parameters on hydrogen production using liquid phase reforming of sugar solution over Pt, Pd, and Ni supported on nanostructured supports. It was found that the desired catalytic pathway for H-2 production involves cleavage of C-C, C-H and O-H bonds that adsorb on the catalyst surface. Thus a good catalyst for production of H2 by liquid-phase reforming must facilitate C-C bond cleavage and promote removal of adsorbed CO species by the water-gas shift reaction, but the catalyst must not facilitate C-O bond cleavage and hydrogenation of CO or CO2. Apart from studying various catalysts, a commercial Pt/gamma-alumina catalyst was used to study the effect of temperature at three different temperatures of 458, 473 and 493 K. Some of the spent catalysts were characterised using TGA, SEM and XRD to study coke deposition. The amorphous and organised form of coke was found on the surface of the catalyst. Carbon dioxide reforming of methane produces synthesis gas with a low hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio, which is desirable for many industrial synthesis processes. This reaction also has very important environmental implications since both methane and carbon dioxide contribute to the greenhouse effect. Converting these gases into a valuable feedstock may significantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2 and CH4. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review on the thermodynamics, catalyst selection and activity, reaction mechanism, and kinetics of this important reaction. Recently, research has centered on the development of catalysts and the feasible applications of this reaction in industry. Group VIII metals supported on oxides are found to be effective for this reason. However, carbon deposition causing catalyst deactivation is the major problem inhibiting the industrial application of the CO2/CH4 reaction. Ni-based catalysts impregnated on certain supports show carbon-free operation and thus attract much attention. To develop an effective catalyst for CO2 reforming of CH4 and accelerate the commercial application of the reaction, the following are identified to be the most important areas for future work: (1) selection of metal and support and studying the effect of their interaction on catalyst activity; (2) the effect of different promoter on catalyst activity; (3) the reaction mechanism and kinetics; and (4) pilot reactor performance and scale-up operation.

Microwave-based methods are widely employed to synthesize metal nanoparticles on various substrates. However, the detailed mechanism of formation of such hybrids has not been addressed. In this paper, we describe the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reduction of metal salts by ethylene glycol under microwave heating conditions. On the basis of this analysis, we identify the temperatures above which the reduction of the metal salt is thermodynamically favorable and temperatures above which the rates of homogeneous nucleation of the metal and the heterogeneous nucleation of the metal on supports are favored. We delineate different conditions which favor the heterogeneous nucleation of the metal on the supports over homogeneous nucleation in the solvent medium based on the dielectric loss parameters of the solvent and the support and the metal/solvent and metal/support interfacial energies. Contrary to current understanding, we show that metal particles can be selectively formed on the substrate even under situations where the temperature of the substrate Is lower than that of the surrounding medium. The catalytic activity of the Pt/CeO(2) and Pt/TiO(2) hybrids synthesized by this method for H(2) combustion reaction shows that complete conversion is achieved at temperatures as low as 100 degrees C with Pt-CeO(2) catalyst and at 50 degrees C with Pt-TiO(2) catalyst. Our method thus opens up possibilities for rational synthesis of high-activity supported catalysts using a fast microwave-based reduction method.

Performance of palladium-containing supported catalysts in the oxidation of 1-butene was investigated in a fixed-bed flow microreactor. The Pd-Fe-HCl/Ti-Al catalyst is the best among the five Pd-Fe-HCl/X (A = SiO2, gamma-Al2O3, Al-Ti, TiO2, MCM-22) catalysts for the oxidation of I-butene to butanone. It is interesting that high propionic acid selectivity can be obtained when V and H2SO4 are added to the palladium-containing supported catalysts.

Tetralin hydrogenation (HYD) and thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were studied for the supported MoS2 and WS2 sulfides, either non-promoted or promoted with Co and Ni. The supports used were ZrO2, alumina-stabilized TiO2 and pure alumina. Preparation of catalysts included presulfidation of non-promoted system with subsequent addition of promoter and resulfidation. It has been found that the nature of promoter plays determining role for the catalytic performance. The most active in both HYD and HDS reactions are Ni-promoted Mo and W catalysts, supported on ZrO2. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Poly(styrene-acrylic acid)-lanthanide (Ln.PSAA) and poly(ethylene-acrylic acid)-neodymium (NdPEAA) complexes have been prepared and characterized. The infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the lanthanide complexes possess the bidentate carboxylate structure Ln-O-C(R)-O (see structure B in text). The catalytic behavior of the complexes has been described. The catalytic activities of Nd.PSAA and Nd.PEAA are much greater than that of the corresponding low molecular weight catalyst for butadiene polymerization. The activities of various individual lanthanide elements are quite different from one another. Neodymium shows the highest activity. Europium, samarium and the heavy elements exhibit very low or no activities. The cis-1,4 content of the polybutadiene obtained is not affected by different lanthanide elements in the series. The complex with the intermediate content of the functional group has a higher activity than the others. The polymer-supported lanthanide complexes having different constitutions have different catalytic activities. When the molar ratio of lanthanide to the functional group is ca. 0.2, the activity of the complex is in the optimum state. The activity is influenced by the dispersion of the lanthanide metal immobilized on the polymer chain. Catalytic activity can be improved by adding other metals to the catalyst system.
