This paper reports an experimental investigation carried out, using the photoelastic technique, to determine the Mode I stress intensity factor in case of cracks of varying a/w ratio in single edge-notch specimens. The photoelastic information was analysed using the several methods proposed by earlier workers. The experimental results are compared with the analytical expressions.

Interference fits are used extensively in aircraft structural joints because of their improved fatigue performance. Recent advances in analysis of these joints have increased understanding of the nonlinear load-contact and load-interfacial slip variations in these joints. Experimental work in these problems is lacking due to difficulties in determining partial contact and partial slip along the pin-hole interface. In this paper, an experimental procedure is enumerated for determining load-contact relations in interference/clearance fits, using photoelastic models and applying a technique for detecting progress of separation/contact up to predetermined locations. The study incorporates a detailed procedure for model making, controlling interference, locating break of contact up to known locations around the interface, estimating optically the degree of interference, determining interfacial friction and evaluating stresses in the sheet. Experiments, simulating joints in large sheets, were carried out under both pin and plate loads. The present studies provide load-separation behavior in interference joint with finite interfacial friction.

Conventional methods for determining the refractive index demand specimens of optical quality, the preparation of which is often very difficult. An indirect determination by matching the refractive indices of specimen and immersion liquid is a practical alternative for photoelastic specimen of nonoptical quality. An experimental arrangement used for this technique and observations made while matching the refractive indices of three different specimens are presented.

Digital fluidic and pneumatic systems incorporate displays for the presentation of information to the operator. Displays reported so far for such systems use moving pistons, tapes, and other mechanisms leading to lower reliability. This paper describes a nonmoving part fluidic display employing the photoelastic effect. The display is pressure actuated and has a long life. When fabricated from compatible materials, this device can withstand hostile environments like nuclear radiation, vibrations, etc. The display is compact, economical and is virtually maintenance free. The display unit has been tested in the laboratory for reliability and speed of response.

Suitable pin-to-hole interference can significantly increase the fatigue life of a pin joint. In practical design, the initial stresses due to interference are high and they are proportional to the effective interference. In experimental studies on such joints, difficulties have been experienced in estimating the interference accurately from physical measurements of pin and hole diameters. A simple photoelastic method has been developed to determine the effective interference to a high degree of accuracy. This paper presents the method and reports illustrative data from a successful application thereof.

A parametric study was carried out to determine the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) in a cracked circular ring by using the photoelastic technique. The stress intensity factors for mode I deformation were determined by subjecting the specimens to the tensile loading from inner boundary and through the holes. The results of Non-Dimensional Stress Intensity Factor (NDSIF) variation with non-dimensional crack length for both methods of loading are compared with each other and with published results.

The interaction of a framed structure with a foundation beam resting on an elastic medium, representing the soil, has been studied using the photoelastic method. The contact pressure distribution, the fibre stress in the foundation beam and frame structure, as well as the stresses in the elastic medium, have been obtained. These have been compared with theoretical results obtained by idealizing the soil as (a) elastic half plane, and (b) elastic half space. It is shown that the photoelastic method can provide an easy solution to this type of problem if the soil can be idealized as an elastic continuum.

A novel comparator architecture is proposed for speed operation in low voltage environment. Performance comparison with a conventional regenerative comparator shows a speed-up of 41%. The proposed comparator is embedded in a continuous time sigma-delta ADC so as to reduce the quantizer delay and hence minimizes the excess loop delay problem. A performance enhancement of 1dB in the dynamic range of the ADC is achieved with this new comparator. We have implemented this ADC in a standard single-poly 8-Metal 0.13 mum UMC process. The entire system operates at 1.2 V supply providing a dynamic range of 32 dB consuming 720 muW of power and occupies an area of 0.1 mm2.

We have demonstrated novel concept of utilizing the photomechanical actuation in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to tune and reversibly switch the Bragg wavelength. When fiber Bragg grating coated with CNTs (CNT-FBG) is exposed externally to a wide range of optical wavelengths, e. g., ultraviolet to infrared (0.2-200 mu m), a strain is induced in the CNTs which alters the grating pitch and refractive index in the CNT-FBG system resulting in a shift in the Bragg wavelength. This novel approach will find applications in telecommunication, sensors and actuators, and also for real time monitoring of the photomechanical actuation in nanoscale materials. Quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) is one of the most popular modulation schemes in coherent optical communication systems for data rates in excess of 40 Gbps because of its high spectral efficiency. This paper proposes a simple method of implementing a QPSK modulator in integrated optic (IO) domain. The QPSK modulator is realized using standard IO components, such as Y-branches and electro-optic modulators (EOMs). Design optimization of EOM is carried out considering the fabrication constraints, miniaturization aspects, and simplicity. Also, the interdependency between electrode length, operating voltage, and electrode gap of an EOM has been captured in the form of a family of curves. These plots enable designing of EOMs for custom requirements. An innovative approach has been adopted in demonstrating the operation of IO QPSK modulator in terms of phase data extracted from beam propagation model. The results obtained by this approach have been verified using the conventional interferometric approach. The operation of the proposed IO QPSK modulator is experimentally demonstrated. The design of IO QPSK modulator is taken up as a part of a broader scheme that aims at generation of QPSK modulated microwave signal based on optical heterodyning. Friction coefficient between a circular-disk periphery and V-block surface was determined by introducing the concept of isotropic point (IP) in isochromatic field of the disk under three-point symmetric loading. IP position on the symmetry axis depends on active coefficient of friction during experiment. We extend this work to asymmetric loading of circular disk in which case two frictional contact pairs out of three loading contacts, independently control the unconstrained IP location. Photoelastic experiment is conducted on particular case of asymmetric three-point loading of circular disk. Basics of digital image processing are used to extract few essential parameters from experimental image, particularly IP location. Analytical solution by Flamant for half plane with a concentrated load, is utilized to derive stress components for required loading configurations of the disk. IP is observed, in analytical simulations of three-point asymmetric normal loading, to move from vertical axis to the boundary along an ellipse-like curve. When friction is included in the analysis, IP approaches the center with increase in loading friction and it goes away with increase in support friction. With all these insights, using experimental IP information, friction angles at three contact pairs of circular disk under asymmetric loading, are determined.
