The kinetics of the reduction of O2 by Ru(NH3)6+2 as catalyzed by cobalt(II) tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl)porphyrin are described both in homogeneous solution and when the reactants are confined to Nafion coatings on graphite electrodes. The catalytic mechanism is determined and the factors that can control the total reduction currents at Nafion-coated electrodes are specified. A kinetic zone diagram for analyzing the behavior of catalyst-mediator-substrate systems at polymer coated electrodes is presented and utilized in identifying the current-limiting processes. Good agreement is demonstrated between calculated and measured reduction currents at rotating disk electrodes. The experimental conditions that will yield the optimum performance of coated electrodes are discussed, and a relationship is derived for the optimal coating thickness.

The relation between the reduction potentials of adsorbed and unadsorbed cobalt(III) tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl)porphyrin and those where it catalyzes the electroreduction of dioxygen is described. There is an unusually large change in the formal potential of the Co(III) couple upon the adsorption of the porphyrin on the graphite electrode surface. The mechanism in which the (inevitably) adsorbed porphyrin catalyzes the reduction of O2 is in accord with a general mechanistic scheme proposed for most monomeric cobalt porphyrins.

Four new dimeric metalloporphyrins (prepared in the laboratory of Professor C. K. Chang) have the two porphyrin rings linked by an anthracene bridge attached to meso positions. The electrocatalytic behavior of the diporphyrins towards the reduction of O2 at graphite electrodes has been examined for the following combination of metal centers: Co-Cu, Co-Fe, Fe-Fe, Fe-H2. The Co-Cu diporphyrin catalyzes the reduction of O2 to H2O2 but no further. The other three catalysts all exhibit mixed reduction pathways leading to both H2O2 and H2O. However, the pathways that lead to H2O do not involve H2O2 as an intermediate. A possible mechanistic scheme is offered to account for the observed behavior.

Synthetic metalloporphyrin complexes are often used as analogues of natural systems, and they can be used for the preparation of new Solid Coordination Frameworks (SCFs). In this work, a series of six metalloporphyrinic compounds constructed from different meso substituted metalloporphyrins (phenyl, carboxyphenyl and sulfonatophenyl) have been structurally characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The compounds were classified considering the dimensionality of the crystal array, referred just to coordination bonds, into 0D, 1D and 2D compounds. This way, the structural features and relationships of those crystal structures were analyzed, in order to extract conclusions not only about the dimensionality of the networks but also about possible applications of the as-obtained compounds, focusing the interest on the interactions of coordination and crystallization molecules. These interactions provide the coordination bonds and the cohesion forces which produce SCFs with different dimensionalities.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used to study a series of synthetic cationic porphyrins as the perchlorate and bromide salts. This work presents the analytical results for the porphyrins obtained using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and 1,8,9-anthratriol as matrices. The selective use of matrix affects ion formation from these porphyrins. By using DHB as the matrix, we not only observed [M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 1-4) ions, but also obtained [2M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 2-7) ions from the synthetic cationic porphyrins. The space volume of the side chains (R groups) and the nature of the anions (Br- or CIO4-) affected the relative importance of monomeric and dimeric ions of the porphyrin. The possible mechanisms of desorption and ionization of these cationic porphyrins were also considered in this study. MALDI-TOFMS proved to be a very useful method for obtaining structural information on these synthetic cationic porphyrins. Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.

Reduction of hydrogen peroxide at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with sigma-bonded pyrrole iron(III) octaethylporphyrin complex, (OEP)Fe(Pyr), was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a rotating disk electrode. In 0.1N NaOH solution, it is shown that such an (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC electrode has a significant catalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide reduction (E(D) = -0.80 V, k = 0.066 cm s(-1)); however, the electrode stability is low. The deactivation is observed when the reaction charge (Q) is passing through the (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC disk electrode. A linear rotation scan method is applied to study the kinetic process by determining the disk electrochemical response (i(D)) to rotation rate (omega) at a definite disk potential (E(D)). Considering that the number of adsorbed electroreduced catalyst molecules (Red) varies according to the disk potential, a factor theta(= Gamma(Red)/(Gamma(Red) + Gamma(Ox))) is introduced to describe the electrode surface area fraction for electroreduced species. The obtained Koutecky-Levich equation is applicable whatever the potential is.
