Two types of peeling experiments are performed in the present research. One is for the Al film/Al2O3 substrate system with an adhesive layer between the film and the substrate. The other one is for the Cu film/Al2O3 substrate system without adhesive layer between the film and the substrate, and the Cu films are electroplated onto the Al2O3 substrates. For the case with adhesive layer, two kinds of adhesives are selected, which are all the mixtures of epoxy and polyimide with mass ratios 1:1.5 and 1:1, respectively. The relationships between energy release rate, the film thickness and the adhesive layer thickness are measured during the steady-state peeling process. The effects of the adhesive layer on the energy release rate are analyzed. Using the experimental results, several analytical criteria for the steady-state peeling based on the bending model and on the two-dimensional finite element analysis model are critically assessed. Through assessment of analytical models, we find that the cohesive zone criterion based on the beam bend model is suitable for a weak interface strength case and it describes a macroscale fracture process zone case, while the two-dimensional finite element model is effective to both the strong interface and weak interface, and it describes a small-scale fracture process zone case. Solidly mounted resonators (SMRs) with a top carbon nanotubes (CNTs) surface coating that doubles as an electrode and as a sensing layer have been fabricated. The influence of the CNTs on the frequency response of the resonators was studied by direct comparison to identical devices with a top metallic electrode. It was found that the CNTs introduced significantly less mass load on the resonators and these devices exhibited a greater quality factor, Q (>2000, compared to ∼1000 for devices with metal electrodes), which increases the gravimetric sensitivity of the devices by allowing the tracking of smaller frequency shifts. Protein solutions with different concentrations were loaded on the top of the resonators and their responses to mass-load from physically adsorbed coatings were investigated. Results show that resonators using CNTs as the top electrode exhibited a higher frequency change for a given load (∼0.25 MHz cm2 ng-1) compared to that of a metal thin film electrode (∼0.14 MHz cm2 ng-1), due to the lower mass of the CNT electrodes and their higher active surface area compared to that of a thin film metal electrode. It is therefore concluded that the use of CNT electrodes on resonators for their use as gravimetric biosensors is a significant improvement over metallic electrodes that are normally employed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Thermal tuning of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles on a thermochromic thin film of VO2 was studied experimentally. The tuning is strongly temperature dependent and thermally reversible. The LSPR wavelength lambda(SPR) shifts to the blue with increasing temperature from 30 to 80 degrees C, and shifts back to the red as temperature decreases. A smart tuning is achievable on condition that the temperature is controlled in a stepwise manner. The tunable wavelength range depends on the particle size or the mass thickness of the metal nanoparticle film. Further, the tunability was found to be enhanced significantly when a layer of TiO2 was introduced to overcoat the Ag nanoparticles, yielding a marked sensitivity factor Delta lambda(SPR)/Delta n, of as large as 480 nm per refractive index unit (n) at the semiconductor phase of VO2.

A rapid rotation-scan method was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 at a cobalt protoporphyrin modified pyrolytic graphite electrode (CoPP/PG). The rate constant of H2O2 oxidation at the CoPP/PG electrode at different potentials and in different pH solutions was measured. The variation of catalytic activity with reaction charges (Q) passed through the electrode was analyzed. This provided a convenient electrochemical method to study the passivation and poisoning of catalytic sites with time.

Semiconductor-sensitised photocatalysis is a well-established and growing area of research, innovation and commercialisation; the latter being mostly limited to the use of TiO2 as the semiconductor. Most of the work on semiconductor photocatalytic systems uses oxygen as the electron acceptor and explores a wide range of electron donors; such systems can be considered to be examples of oxidative photocatalysis, OP. OP underpins most current examples of commercial self-cleaning materials, such as: glass, tiles, concrete, paint and fabrics. OP, and its myriad of applications, have been reviewed extensively over the years both in this journal and elsewhere. However, the ability of TiO2, and other semiconductor sensitisers, to promote reductive photocatalysis, RP, especially of dyes, is significant and, although less well-known, is of growing importance. In such systems, the source of the electrons is some easily oxidised species, such as glycerol. One recent, significant example of a RP process is with respect to photocatalyst activity indicator inks. paiis, which provide a measure of the activity of a photocatalytic film under test via the rate of change of colour of the dye in the ink coating due to irreversible RP. In contrast, by incorporating the semiconductor sensitiser in the ink, rather than outside it, it is possible to create an effective UV dosimeter, based on RP, which can be used as a sun-burn warning indicator. In the above examples the dye is reduced irreversibly, but when the photocatalyst in an ink is used to reversibly photoreduce a dye, a novel, colourimetric oxygen-sensitive indicator ink can be created, which has commercial potential in the food packaging industry. Finally, if no dye is present in the ink, and the semiconductor photocatalyst-loaded ink film coats an easily reduced substrate, such as a metal oxide film, then it can be used to reduce the latter and so, for example, clean up tarnished steel. The above are examples of smart inks, i.e. inks that are active and provide either dynamic information (such as UV dose or O2 level) or a useful function (such as tarnish removal), and all work via a RP process and are reviewed here

Polycarbonate membranes (PCM) of various pores sizes (400, 200, 100 and 50 nm) were used as templates for gold deposition. The electrodeposition from gold ions resulted in the formation of gold nanotubes when large pores size PCMs (400 and 200 nm) were used. On the other hand, gold nanowires were predominant for the PCMs with smaller pores size (100 and 50 nm). Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from the probe molecule 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy) was obtained from all these nanostructures. The SERS efficiency of the substrates produced using the PC M templates were compared to two commonly used SERS platforms: a roughened gold electrode and gold nanostructures electrodeposited through organized polystyrene spheres (PSS). The SERS signal of the probe molecule increased as the pore diameter of the PCM template decreased. Moreover, the SERS efficiency from the nanostructures produced using 50 nm PCM templates was four and two times better than the signal from the roughened gold electrode and the PSS template, respectively. The SERS substrates prepared using PCM templates were more homogenous over a larger area (ca. 1 cm(2)), presented better spatial and sample to sample reproducibility than the other substrates. These results show that SERS substrates prepared using PCM templates are promising for the fabrication of planar SERS platforms for analytical/bioanalytical applications.

A CMOS/SOI circuit to decode Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) signals is presented as part of a body-implanted neurostimulator for visual prosthesis. Since encoded data is the sole input to the circuit, the decoding technique is based on a novel double-integration concept and does not require low-pass filtering. Non-overlapping control phases are internally derived from the incoming pulses and a fast-settling comparator ensures good discrimination accuracy in the megahertz range. The circuit was integrated on a 2 mum single-metal thin-film CMOS/SOI fabrication process and has an effective area of 2 mm(2). Measured resolution of encoding parameter a is better than 10% at 6 MHz and V-DD = 3.3 V. Idle-mode consumption is 340 LW. Pulses of frequencies up to 15 MHz and alpha = 10% can be discriminated for 2.3 V less than or equal to V-DD less than or equal to 3.3 V. Such an excellent immunity to V-DD deviations meets a design specification with respect to inherent coupling losses on transmitting data and power by means of a transcutaneous link.

During underwater photography and sampling of the rift valley bottom in the axial part of the East Pacific Rise, where water transparency is reduced due to hydrothermal input, ore manifestations have been found. The bottom is covered by them as by a jacket on both sides from the EPR axial zone. However, exposed pillow-lavas and clumpy blocks in rift ledges are covered by a thin metal-bearing film. It is supposed that sedimentation results mainly from hydrothermal input of dissolved chemical elements in seawater, their transformation on the geochemical barrier, and subsequent deposition as particulates. Contents of ore components in metalliferous sediments have been measured by atomic-absorption and X-ray radiometry methods. Sediment age has been determined as Middle Pleistocene - Holocene. Maximal hydrothermal activity was at the beginning of Early Holocene, about 10 Ka. A smoker has been found on the western slope of the rift valley.

The work reported here shows a direct experimental comparison of the sensitivities of AlN solidly mounted resonators (SMR)-based biosensors fabricated with standard metal electrodes and with carbon nanotube electrodes. SMRs resonating at frequencies around 1.75 GHz have been fabricated, some devices using a thin film of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the top electrode material and some identical devices using a chromium/gold electrode. Protein solutions with different concentrations were loaded on the top of the resonators and their responses to mass-load from physically adsorbed coatings were investigated. Results show that resonators using CNTs as the top electrode material exhibited higher frequency change for a given load due to the higher active surface area of a thin film of interconnecting CNTs compared to that of a metal thin film electrode and hence exhibited greater mass loading sensitivity. It is therefore concluded that the use of CNT electrodes on resonators for their use as gravimetric biosensors is viable and worthwhile.

In this study, effects of concentrations of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Sn(II) ions in the electrolytic bath solution on the properties of electrochemically deposited CuZnSn (CZT) films were investigated. Study of the composition of a CZT film has shown that the metallic content (relative atomic ratio) in the film increased linearly with increase in the metal ion concentration. It is the first time that the relationship of the compositions of the alloy phases in the co-electrodeposited CZT film with the concentration of metal ions has been revealed. The results have confirmed that the formation and content of Cu6Sn5 and Cu5Zn8 alloy phases in the film were directly controlled by the concentration of Cu(II). SEM measurements have shown that Sn(II) has significant impact on film morphology, which became more porous as a result of the larger nucleation size of tin. The changes in the surface properties of the films was also confirmed by chronoamperometry characteristic (i–t) deposition curves. By optimization of metal ion concentrations in the electrolyte solution, a copper-poor and zinc-rich kesterite Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) film was synthesized by the sulfurization of the deposited CZT film. The solar cell with the CZTS film showed an energy conversion efficiency of 2.15% under the illumination intensity of 100 mW cm 2.

For the first time, the impact of energy quantisation in single electron transistor (SET) island on the performance of hybrid complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-SET transistor circuits has been studied. It has been shown through simple analytical models that energy quantisation primarily increases the Coulomb Blockade area and Coulomb Blockade oscillation periodicity of the SET device and thus influences the performance of hybrid CMOS-SET circuits. A novel computer aided design (CAD) framework has been developed for hybrid CMOS-SET co-simulation, which uses Monte Carlo (MC) simulator for SET devices along with conventional SPICE for metal oxide semiconductor devices. Using this co-simulation framework, the effects of energy quantisation have been studied for some hybrid circuits, namely, SETMOS, multiband voltage filter and multiple valued logic circuits. Although energy quantisation immensely deteriorates the performance of the hybrid circuits, it has been shown that the performance degradation because of energy quantisation can be compensated by properly tuning the bias current of the current-biased SET devices within the hybrid CMOS-SET circuits. Although this study is primarily done by exhaustive MC simulation, effort has also been put to develop first-order compact model for SET that includes energy quantisation effects. Finally, it has been demonstrated that one can predict the SET behaviour under energy quantisation with reasonable accuracy by slightly modifying the existing SET compact models that are valid for metallic devices having continuous energy states.

In this paper we report a systematic study of low-frequency 1/fα resistance fluctuation in a metal film at different stages of electromigration. The resistance fluctuation (noise) measurement was carried out in presence of a dc electromigration stressing current. We observe that in addition to the increase in the spectral power SV(f), the frequency dependence of the spectral power changes as the electromigration process progresses and the exponent α starts to change from 1 to higher value closer to 1.5. We interpret this change in α as arising due to an additional contribution to the spectral power with a 1/f3/2 component, which starts to contribute as the electromigration process progresses. This additional component SV(f) ∼ 1/f3/2 has been suggested to originate from long range diffusion that would accompany any electromigration process. The experimental observation finds support in a model simulation, where we also find that the enhancement of noise during electromigration stressing is accompanied by a change in spectral power frequency dependence.
