In this work we have realized plasma diagnosis produced by Laser (LPP), by means of emission spectroscopy in a Laser Shock Processing (LSP). The LSP has been proposed as an alternative technology, competitive with classical surface treatments. The ionic species present in the plasma together with electron density and its temperature provide significant indicators of the degree of surface effect of the treated material. In order to analyze these indicators, we have realized spectroscopic studies of optical emission in the laser-generated plasmas in different situations. We have worked focusing on an aluminum sample (Al2024) in air and/or in LSP conditions (water flow) a Q-switched laser of Nd:YAG (λ = 1.06 μm, 10 ns of pulse duration, running at 10 Hz repetition rate). The pulse energy was set at 2,5 J per pulse. The electron density has been measured using, in every case, the Stark broadening of H Balmer α line (656.27 nm). In the case of the air, this measure has been contrasted with the value obtained with the line of 281.62 nm of Al II. Special attention has been paid to the self-absorption of the spectral lines used. The measures were realized with different delay times after the pulse of the laser (1–8 μs) and with a time window of 1 μs. In LSP the electron density obtained was between 1017 cm−3 for the shortest delays (4–6 μs), and 1016 cm−3 for the greatest delays (7,8 μs).

We present experimental studies and numerical modeling based on a combination of the Bidirectional Beam Propagation Method and Finite Element Modeling that completely describes the wavelength spectra of point by point femtosecond laser inscribed fiber Bragg gratings, showing excellent agreement with experiment. We have investigated the dependence of different spectral parameters such as insertion loss, all dominant cladding and ghost modes and their shape relative to the position of the fiber Bragg grating in the core of the fiber. Our model is validated by comparing model predictions with experimental data and allows for predictive modeling of the gratings. We expand our analysis to more complicated structures, where we introduce symmetry breaking; this highlights the importance of centered gratings and how maintaining symmetry contributes to the overall spectral quality of the inscribed Bragg gratings. Finally, the numerical modeling is applied to superstructure gratings and a comparison with experimental results reveals a capability for dealing with complex grating structures that can be designed with particular wavelength characteristics.

While the emission rate of ultrafine particles has been measured and quantified, there is very little information on the emission rates of ions and charged particles from laser printers. This paper describes a methodology that can be adopted for measuring the surface charge density on printed paper and the ion and charged particle emissions during operation of a high-emitting laser printer and shows how emission rates of ultrafine particles, ions and charged particles may be quantified using a controlled experiment within a closed chamber.

This thesis contains five experimental spectroscopic studies that probe the vibration-rotation energy level structure of acetylene and some of its isotopologues. The emphasis is on the development of laser spectroscopic methods for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy. Three of the experiments use cavity ringdown spectroscopy. One is a standard setup that employs a non-frequency stabilised continuous wave laser as a source. In the other two experiments, the same laser is actively frequency stabilised to the ringdown cavity. This development allows for increased repetition rate of the experimental signal and thus the spectroscopic sensitivity of the method is improved. These setups are applied to the recording of several vibration-rotation overtone bands of both H(12)C(12)CH and H(13)C(13)CH. An intra-cavity laser absorption spectroscopy setup that uses a commercial continuous wave ring laser and a Fourier transform interferometer is presented. The configuration of the laser is found to be sub-optimal for high-sensitivity work but the spectroscopic results are good and show the viability of this type of approach. Several ro-vibrational bands of carbon-13 substituted acetylenes are recorded and analysed. Compared with earlier work, the signal-to-noise ratio of a laser-induced dispersed infrared fluorescence experiment is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude by exploiting the geometric characteristics of the setup. The higher sensitivity of the spectrometer leads to the observation of two new symmetric vibrational states of H(12)C(12)CH. The precision of the spectroscopic parameters of some previously published symmetric states is also improved. An interesting collisional energy transfer process is observed for the excited vibrational states and this phenomenon is explained by a simple step-down model.

We report the surface laser damage threshold in sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, a nonlinear optical crystal. The experiment is performed with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in TEM00 mode. The single shot damage thresholds are 11.16 +/- 0.28GWcm(-2) and 1.25 +/- 0.02GWcm(-2) for 1064 nm and 532 nm laser wavelengths respectively. A close correlation between the laser damage threshold and mechanical hardness is observed. A possible mechanism of laser damage is discussed.

Nonlinear absorption and refraction characteristics of cesium lithium borate (CsLiB6O10) crystal have been studied using Z-scan technique. Ti:sapphire laser with 110 fs pulse width operating at 800 nm wavelength and pulse repetition rate of 1 kHz is used as the source of photons. Intensity of the laser pulse is varied from 0.541 to 1.283 T W/cm2 to estimate the intensity dependence of multiphoton absorption coefficients. Using the theory of multiphoton absorption proposed by Sutherland [ Handbook of Nonlinear Optics, in 2nd ed., edited by D. G. McLean and S. Kirkpatrick, Dekker, New York (2003) ], found that open aperture Z-scan data fit well for the five-photon absorption (5PA) process. 5PA coefficients are obtained by fitting the expressions into the open aperture experimental data for various peak intensities (I00). The nonlinear refractive index n2 estimated from closed aperture Z-scan experiment is 1.075×10−4 cm2/T W at an input peak intensity of 0.723 T W/cm2. The above experiment when repeated with a 532 nm, 6 ns pulsed laser led to an irreversible damage of the sample resulting in an asymmetric open aperture Z-scan profile. This indicates that it is not possible to observe multiphoton absorption in this regime of pulse width using 532 nm laser.

In a recent experiment on laser beam transmission through an absorbing gas, the critical Reynold's number for the flow, induced by the heating of the gas, to become turbulent was found to be less than 30, which is many orders of magnitude smaller than that for pure shear flow in pipes. It is shown here that a Rayleigh number is the more appropriate criterion to characterize the stability of flow in this situation, and its value estimated in two limiting cases is found to bracket the expected critical Rayleigh number for vertical concentric cylinders.

The variation in temperature and concentration plays a crucial role in predicting the final microstructure during solidification of a binary alloy. Most of the experimental techniques used to measure concentration and temperature are intrusive in nature and affect the flow field. In this paper, the main focus is laid on in-situ, non-intrusive, transient measurement of concentration and temperature during the solidification of a binary mixture of aqueous ammonium chloride solution (a metal-analog system) in a top cooled cavity using laser based Mach-Zehnder Interferometric technique. It was found from the interferogram, that the angular deviation of fringe pattern and the total number of fringes exhibit significant sensitivity to refractive index and hence are functions of the local temperature and concentration of the NH4Cl solution inside the cavity. Using the fringe characteristics, calibration curves were established for the range of temperature and concentration levels expected during the solidification process. In the actual solidification experiment, two hypoeutectic solutions (5% and 15% NH4Cl) were chosen. The calibration curves were used to determine the temperature and concentration of the solution inside the cavity during solidification of 5% and 15% NH4Cl solution at different instants of time. The measurement was carried out at a fixed point in the cavity, and the concentration variation with time was recorded as the solid-liquid interface approached the measurement point. The measurement exhibited distinct zones of concentration distribution caused by solute rejection and Rayleigh Benard convection. Further studies involving flow visualization with laser scattering confirmed the Rayleigh Benard convection. Computational modeling was also performed, which corroborated the experimental findings. A modified simplified rate equation (RE) model of flowing chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL), which is adapted to both the condition of homogeneous broadening and inhomogeneous broadening being of importance and the condition of inhomogeneous broadening being predominant, is presented for performance analyses of a COIL. By using the Voigt profile function and the gain-equal-loss approximation, a gain expression has been deduced from the rate equations of upper and lower level laser species. This gain expression is adapted to the conditions of very low gas pressure up to quite high pressure and can deal with the condition of lasing frequency being not equal to the central one of spectral profile. The expressions of output power and extraction efficiency in a flowing COIL can be obtained by solving the coupling equations of the deduced gain expression and the energy equation which expresses the complete transformation of the energy stored in singlet delta state oxygen into laser energy. By using these expressions, the RotoCOIL experiment is simulated, and obtained results agree well with experiment data. Effects of various adjustable parameters on the performances of COIL are also presented.
