There is substantial empirical evidence that energy and financial markets are closely connected. As one of the most widely-used energy resources worldwide, natural gas has a large daily trading volume. In order to hedge the risk of natural gas spot markets, a large number of hedging strategies can be used, especially with the rapid development of natural gas derivatives markets. These hedging instruments include natural gas futures and options, as well as Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) prices that are related to natural gas stock prices. The volatility spillover effect is the delayed effect of a returns shock in one physical, biological or financial asset on the subsequent volatility or co-volatility of another physical, biological or financial asset. Investigating volatility spillovers within and across energy and financial markets is a crucial aspect of constructing optimal dynamic hedging strategies. The paper tests and calculates spillover effects among natural gas spot, futures and ETF markets using the multivariate conditional volatility diagonal BEKK model. The data used include natural gas spot and futures returns data from two major international natural gas derivatives markets, namely NYMEX (USA) and ICE (UK), as well as ETF data of natural gas companies from the stock markets in the USA and UK. The empirical results show that there are significant spillover effects in natural gas spot, futures and ETF markets for both USA and UK. Such a result suggests that both natural gas futures and ETF products within and beyond the country might be considered when constructing optimal dynamic hedging strategies for natural gas spot prices.

The performance of active and passive fund management has been extensively studied especially in the US. This thesis is focused on the performance of active and passive fund management in the Finnish and European stock markets during a five-year time span from 3/2011 to 3/2016. The aim of this study is to find out which strategy will result in better returns for the small-scale investor. The thesis questions also which strategy leads to a better profit-risk rate and how well the fund managers perform in creating added value. The data of the study consists of 44 active Finnish funds and two passive exchange traded funds available for Finnish investors. Indexes of both Finnish and European markets and a risk-free rate are used to support the analysis. The data for the thesis is collected from the DataStream database. Performance indicators that are used in the study are: return, volatility, Sharpe ratio and Jensen’s alpha. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that in the Finnish stock market the passive strategy yielded a little better profits than the average of active funds. In the European stock market, the profits for the passive fund were significantly better than the average of active funds. Considering the profit-risk rate, neither strategy out- performed. The results of this thesis are in line with the previous studies, that encourage to favor the passive strategy.

Préface My thesis consists of three essays where I consider equilibrium asset prices and investment strategies when the market is likely to experience crashes and possibly sharp windfalls. Although each part is written as an independent and self contained article, the papers share a common behavioral approach in representing investors preferences regarding to extremal returns. Investors utility is defined over their relative performance rather than over their final wealth position, a method first proposed by Markowitz (1952b) and by Kahneman and Tversky (1979), that I extend to incorporate preferences over extremal outcomes. With the failure of the traditional expected utility models in reproducing the observed stylized features of financial markets, the Prospect theory of Kahneman and Tversky (1979) offered the first significant alternative to the expected utility paradigm by considering that people focus on gains and losses rather than on final positions. Under this setting, Barberis, Huang, and Santos (2000) and McQueen and Vorkink (2004) were able to build a representative agent optimization model which solution reproduced some of the observed risk premium and excess volatility. The research in behavioral finance is relatively new and its potential still to explore. The three essays composing my thesis propose to use and extend this setting to study investors behavior and investment strategies in a market where crashes and sharp windfalls are likely to occur. In the first paper, the preferences of a representative agent, relative to time varying positive and negative extremal thresholds are modelled and estimated. A new utility function that conciliates between expected utility maximization and tail-related performance measures is proposed. The model estimation shows that the representative agent preferences reveals a significant level of crash aversion and lottery-pursuit. Assuming a single risky asset economy the proposed specification is able to reproduce some of the distributional features exhibited by financial return series. The second part proposes and illustrates a preference-based asset allocation model taking into account investors crash aversion. Using the skewed t distribution, optimal allocations are characterized as a resulting tradeoff between the distribution four moments. The specification highlights the preference for odd moments and the aversion for even moments. Qualitatively, optimal portfolios are analyzed in terms of firm characteristics and in a setting that reflects real-time asset allocation, a systematic over-performance is obtained compared to the aggregate stock market. Finally, in my third article, dynamic option-based investment strategies are derived and illustrated for investors presenting downside loss aversion. The problem is solved in closed form when the stock market exhibits stochastic volatility and jumps. The specification of downside loss averse utility functions allows corresponding terminal wealth profiles to be expressed as options on the stochastic discount factor contingent on the loss aversion level. Therefore dynamic strategies reduce to the replicating portfolio using exchange traded and well selected options, and the risky stock.

Suhdannesyklien käänteiden määrittämiseen käytettiin ostopäälliköiden indeksiä (PMI-indeksi), jonka on todettu toimivan hyvin esimerkiksi pörssikurssien kehitystä ennakoivana indikaattorina.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää saavutetaanko passiivisilla arvostrategioilla riskikorjattuna ylisuuria tuottoja Suomen osakemarkkinoilla. Tuottaako matalien tunnuslukujen perusteella valittujen osakkeiden portfolio enemmän kuin korkeiden tunnuslukujen portfolio? Ovatko alfat tilastollisesti merkitseviä? Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on myös selvittää, ovatko korkeimman ja matalimman arvostustason portfolioiden menestyserot tilastollisesti merkitseviä. Tunnuslukuina on tarkasteltu P/E-, EV/EBIT- ja EV/EBITDA-tunnuslukuja sekä P/B- ja P/S–lukuja. Lisäksi on tutkittu yhdistelmätunnuslukuina P/E- ja P/B–lukujen tulon muodostamaa tunnuslukua, sekä suhteellisiin EV/EBITDA-, P/B- ja P/S-lukuihin perustuvaa arvostusmittaria. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu Suomen osakemarkkinoilla julkisesti noteeratuista yrityksistä toukokuusta 1991 toukokuuhun 2006. Osakkeet järjestettiin tunnuslukujen arvostustason perusteella kvintiiliportfolioihin. Myöhemmin portfoliot muodostettiin uudelleen kolmen ja viiden vuoden välein. Lopuksi tarkasteltiin kvintiiliportfolioiden kuukausittaisia tuottoja tunnuslukukohtaisesti koko tutkimusjakson ajalta. Tulosten perusteella on selkeästi havaittavissa, että matalan tunnusluvun kvintiiliportfoliot menestyivät paremmin kuin korkean tunnusluvun kvintiiliportfoliot. Kolmen vuoden jaksoissa P/E-, EV/EBITDA-, P/B-, P/S- ja kolmen tunnusluvun yhdistelmällä muodostetuilla kvintiiliportfolioilla arvopreemio oli selkeästi havaittavissa. Viiden vuoden jaksoissa vastaava ilmiö toistui EV/EBITDA-tunnusluvulla muodostetuilla kvintiiliportfolioilla. Eniten tuotti absoluuttisesti sekä riskikorjattuna tutkimuksessa esiteltävä kolmen vuoden jaksoissa kolmen tunnusluvun yhdistelmällä muodostettu matalimman arvostustason kvintiiliportfolio, joka tuotti riskikorjattuna tilastollisesti erittäin merkitsevästi positiivista alfaa matalalla riskitasolla.

Tämä Pro gradu–työ on käytännönläheinen sijoittajalähtöinen tutkimus varallisuudenhoidosta indeksiosuusrahastoilla. Tavoitteena on selvittää indeksiosuusrahastojen olemusta, niiden hyötyjä sekä mahdollisia haittapuolia. Toisena tavoitteena on rakentaa indeksiosuusrahastoista aikaisemman tutkimuksen pohjalta mallisalkku. Kolmantena tavoitteena on luoda Excelin portfolio-optimoinnilla salkku, jossa tutkitaan indeksiosuusrahastojen suoriutumista markkinoilla. Tämä optimointimetodi on rakennettu Mika Vaihekosken (2002) mukaan. Tutkimusmenetelmänä on empiirinen tutkimus. Tarkastelen aihetta pääosin liiketaloustieteellisestä näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksessa käytetään myös paljon rahoitusmarkkinalähtöistä näkökulmaa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu kolmestakymmenestäneljästä Yhdysvaltain markkinoiden osake-, joukkovelkakirja- sekä raaka-aineindeksiosuusrahastosta. Aineisto on vuosilta 2006 – 2011 sisältäen 34x69 havaintoa.

Pörssijohdannaisten lisäksi on syytä käyttää räätälöityjä tuotteita, jotta suojauksesta saataisiin mahdollisimman kattava.

It is well known that that there is an intrinsic link between the financial and energy sectors, which can be analyzed through their spillover effects, which are measures of how the shocks to returns in different assets affect each other’s subsequent volatility in both spot and futures markets. Financial derivatives, which are not only highly representative of the underlying indices but can also be traded on both the spot and futures markets, include Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which is a tradable spot index whose aim is to replicate the return of an underlying benchmark index. When ETF futures are not available to examine spillover effects, “generated regressors” may be used to construct both Financial ETF futures and Energy ETF futures. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the covolatility spillovers within and across the US energy and financial sectors in both spot and futures markets, by using “generated regressors” and a multivariate conditional volatility model, namely Diagonal BEKK. The daily data used are from 1998/12/23 to 2016/4/22. The data set is analyzed in its entirety, and also subdivided into three subset time periods. The empirical results show there is a significant relationship between the Financial ETF and Energy ETF in the spot and futures markets. Therefore, financial and energy ETFs are suitable for constructing a financial portfolio from an optimal risk management perspective, and also for dynamic hedging purposes.

Over the past five years, over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives markets have received heightened regulatory attention, due to their opaqueness, size and interconnectedness, with a view to improving the robustness, safety and resilience of this market segment. There has been continued progress in the follow-up to the G-20 commitments, with the EU (EMIR, MIFID II, CRD/CRR IV, MAD) and the US (Swap Execution Facility or SEF, Title VII of Dodd-Frank Act, Basel III) leading in the implementation timelines and capturing approximately 80-90% of the overall market. Based on the data compiled for the yearly ECMI Statistical Package, this commentary provides a snapshot of the current status of the global OTC derivatives markets by: i) identifying general trends over the past decade, ii) looking at the changes in the market structure (instruments and participants), iii) estimating the uncollateralised derivatives exposure and iv) examining the relationship between OTC derivatives and exchange-traded derivatives (ETD).

This paper examines execution costs and the impact of trade size for stock index futures using price-volume transaction data from the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange. Consistent with Subrahmanyam [Rev. Financ. Stud. 4 (1991) 11] we find that effective half spreads in the stock index futures market are small compared to stock markets, and that trades in stock index futures have only a small permanent price impact. This result is important as it helps to better understand the success of equity index products such as index futures and Exchange Traded Funds. We also find that there is no asymmetry in the post-trade price reaction between purchases and sales for stock index futures across various trade sizes. This result is consistent with the conjecture in Chan and Lakonishok [J. Financ. Econ. 33 (1993) 173] that the asymmetry surrounding block trades in stock markets is due to the high cost of short selling and the general reluctance of traders to short sell on stock markets. Online communities have evolved beyond the realm of social phenomenon to become important knowledge-sharing media with real economic consequences. However, the sharing of knowledge and the communication of meaning through Internet technology presents many difficulties. This is particularly so for online finance forums where market-sensitive information and disinformation about exchange-traded stocks is regularly disseminated. The development of trust and the effect of misinformation in this environment are important in the growth of this communication medium. Forum administrators need to better understand and handle the development of trust. In this article, we analyze and discuss the communicative practices of a group of investors and members of an online community of interest. We found that conflict as a driver of knowledge sharing is an important consideration for forum administrators and designers.
