Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a method to analyze the noise in aircraft cabins through the VHF Aeronautical Communication Channel, aimed at examining an environment that has the possibility of communication problems between the aircraft crew and the professionals responsible for the controls on land. Design/methodology/approach - This analysis includes equipment normally used for identification and comparison of electromagnetic noise, the cabin and the environment that are present in an airport, as well as equipment for frequency analysis and intensity of those signals. The analysis is done in a reverse way, eliminating situations that are not common in the examined environment, until the identification of the situation with the irregularity. Findings - According to the results, the implementation of the Fourier transform for noise analysis in the cabin was efficient. These results demonstrate that through this transformation, the noise sources can be identified in the environments in cases where there is much spectrum pollution. Research limitations/implications - This kind of noise analysis is important, considering the importance of having good accuracy in airport environment analysis. Originality/value - The paper presents the main trends in the future of aviation communications, and describes the new applications that aim to minimize problems with the current VHF channel.

An analytical theory to describe the combined effects of the epitaxial layer thickness and the ohmic contact on the noise properties of Schottky barrier diodes is presented. The theory, which provides information on both the local and the global noise properties, takes into account the finite size of the epitaxial layer and the effects of the back ohmic contact, and applies to the whole range of applied bias. It is shown that by scaling down the epitaxial layer thickness, the current regime in which the noise temperature displays a shot-noise-like behavior increases at the cost of reducing the current range in which the thermal-noise-like behavior dominates. This improvement in noise temperature is limited by the effects of the ohmic contact, which appear for large currents. The theory is formulated on general trends, allowing its application to the noise analysis of other semiconductor devices operating under strongly inhomogeneous distributions of the electric field and charge concentrations.

This volume presents a collection of papers covering applications from a wide range of systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom studied using techniques from stochastic and infinite dimensional analysis, e.g. Feynman path integrals, the statistical mechanics of polymer chains, complex networks, and quantum field theory. Systems of infinitely many degrees of freedom create their particular mathematical challenges which have been addressed by different mathematical theories, namely in the theories of stochastic processes, Malliavin calculus, and especially white noise analysis. These proceedings are inspired by a conference held on the occasion of Prof. Ludwig Streit’s 75th birthday and celebrate his pioneering and ongoing work in these fields.

KCNQ1 (K(V)LQT1) K+ channels play an important role during electrolyte secretion in airways and colon. KCNQ1 was cloned recently from NaCl-secreting shark rectal glands. Here we study. the properties and regulation of the cloned sK(V)LQT1 expressed in Xenopus oocytes and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and compare the results with those obtained from in vitro perfused rectal gland tubules (RGT). The expression of sKCNQ1 induced voltage-dependent, delayed activated K+ currents, which were augmented by an increase in intracellular cAMP and Ca2+. The chromanol derivatives 293B and 526B potently inhibited sKCNQ1 expressed in oocytes and CHO cells, but had little effect on RGT electrolyte transport. Short-circuit currents in RGT were activated by alkalinization and were decreased by acidification. In CHO cells an alkaline pH activated and an acidic pH inhibited 293B-sensitive KCNQ1 currents. PURPOSE: Atherosclerosis results in a considerable medical and socioeconomic impact on society. We sought to evaluate novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) angiography and vessel wall sequences to visualize and quantify different morphologic stages of atherosclerosis in a Watanabe hereditary hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbit model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Aortic 3D steady-state free precession angiography and subrenal aortic 3D black-blood fast spin-echo vessel wall imaging pre- and post-Gadolinium (Gd) was performed in 14 WHHL rabbits (3 normal, 6 high-cholesterol diet, and 5 high-cholesterol diet plus endothelial denudation) on a commercial 1.5 T MR system. Angiographic lumen diameter, vessel wall thickness, signal-/contrast-to-noise analysis, total vessel area, lumen area, and vessel wall area were analyzed semiautomatically. RESULTS: Pre-Gd, both lumen and wall dimensions (total vessel area, lumen area, vessel wall area) of group 2 + 3 were significantly increased when compared with those of group 1 (all P < 0.01). Group 3 animals had significantly thicker vessel walls than groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.01), whereas angiographic lumen diameter was comparable among all groups. Post-Gd, only diseased animals of groups 2 + 3 showed a significant (>100%) signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise increase. CONCLUSIONS: A combination of novel 3D magnetic resonance angiography and high-resolution 3D vessel wall MRI enabled quantitative characterization of various atherosclerotic stages including positive arterial remodeling and Gd uptake in a WHHL rabbit model using a commercially available 1.5 T MRI system.

Tässä työssä tutkittiin Fortum Oyj:n MTBE -yksikön vesi metanolitislauskolonnin käyttö- ja tarkastushistoriaa sekä yleisestä syöpymisestä aiheutunutta seinämän ohenemaa. Oheneminen oli kiihtynyt viimeisten käyttövuosien aikana. Kolonni poistettiin käytöstä vuonna 2002. Kirjallisuusosassa käsitellään MTBE -prosessia, metallien korroosiota eri olosuhteissa sekä korroosiotutkimusmenetelmiä. Eri korroosiotutkimusmenetelmistä käsitellään sähkökemiallinen kohina -menetelmää, vastuslankamittausta sekä upotuskokeita. Kokeellisessa osassa käsitellään tuloksia käyttö- ja tarkastushistoriaselvityksistä ja korroosiokokeista, jotka tehtiin kirjallisuusosassa esitettyjen menetelmien mukaisesti. Koekappaleet olivat hiiliterästä, joka oli vastaavaa materiaalia kuin metanolin tislauskolonni. Korroosiokokeiden tuloksista havaittiin, että hiiliteräs syöpyy nopeammin vesimetanoliliuoksessa, jossa on 60 - 80 metanolia. Syöpymisnopeus kasvoi liuoksen pH:n laskiessa ja oli suurinta kun pH oli alle 4,0.

(E)-2-{[(2-Aminopyridin-3-yl)imino]-methyl}-4,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol ( 3: ), a ligand containing an intramolecular hydrogen bond, was prepared according to a previous literature report, with modifications, and was characterized by UV-vis, FTIR, ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HHCOSY, TOCSY and cyclic voltammetry. Computational analyses at the level of DFT and TD-DFT were performed to study its electronic and molecular structures. The results of these analyses elucidated the behaviors of the UV-vis and electrochemical data. Analysis of the transitions in the computed spectrum showed that the most important band is primarily composed of a HOMO→LUMO transition, designated as an intraligand (IL) charge transfer.

This study compared the effectiveness of the multifocal visual evoked cortical potentials (mfVEP) elicited by pattern pulse stimulation with that of pattern reversal in producing reliable responses (signal-to-noise ratio >1.359). Participants were 14 healthy subjects. Visual stimulation was obtained using a 60-sector dartboard display consisting of 6 concentric rings presented in either pulse or reversal mode. Each sector, consisting of 16 checks at 99% Michelson contrast and 80 cd/m² mean luminance, was controlled by a binary m-sequence in the time domain. The signal-to-noise ratio was generally larger in the pattern reversal than in the pattern pulse mode. The number of reliable responses was similar in the central sectors for the two stimulation modes. At the periphery, pattern reversal showed a larger number of reliable responses. Pattern pulse stimuli performed similarly to pattern reversal stimuli to generate reliable waveforms in R1 and R2. The advantage of using both protocols to study mfVEP responses is their complementarity: in some patients, reliable waveforms in specific sectors may be obtained with only one of the two methods. The joint analysis of pattern reversal and pattern pulse stimuli increased the rate of reliability for central sectors by 7.14% in R1, 5.35% in R2, 4.76% in R3, 3.57% in R4, 2.97% in R5, and 1.78% in R6. From R1 to R4 the reliability to generate mfVEPs was above 70% when using both protocols. Thus, for a very high reliability and thorough examination of visual performance, it is recommended to use both stimulation protocols.

The weekly dependence of pollutant aerosols in the urban environment of Lisbon (Portugal) is inferred from the records of atmospheric electric field at Portela meteorological station (38°47′N,9°08′W). Measurements were made with a Bendorf electrograph. The data set exists from 1955 to 1990, but due to the contaminating effect of the radioactive fallout during 1960 and 1970s, only the period between 1980 and 1990 is considered here. Using a relative difference method a weekly dependence of the atmospheric electric field is found in these records, which shows an increasing trend between 1980 and 1990. This is consistent with a growth of population in the Lisbon metropolitan area and consequently urban activity, mainly traffic. Complementarily, using a Lomb–Scargle periodogram technique the presence of a daily and weekly cycle is also found. Moreover, to follow the evolution of theses cycles, in the period considered, a simple representation in a colour surface plot representation of the annual periodograms is presented. Further, a noise analysis of the periodograms is made, which validates the results found. Two datasets were considered: all days in the period, and fair-weather days only.

Nowadays, the use of chemicals that satisfactorily meet the needs of different sectors of the chemical industry is linked to the consumption of biodegradable materials. In this context, this work contemplated biotechnological aspects with the objective of developing a more environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor. In order to achieve this goal, nanoemulsion-type systems (NE) were obtained by varying the amount of Tween 80 (9 to 85 ppm) a sortitan surfactant named polyoxyethylene (20) monooleate. This NE-system was analyzed using phase diagrams in which the percentage of the oil phase (commercial soybean oil, codenamed as OS) was kept constant. By changing the amount of Tween 80, several polar NE-OS derived systems (O/W-type nanoemulsion) were obtained and characterized through light scattering, conductivity and pH, and further subjected to electrochemical studies. The interfacial behavior of these NE-OS derived systems (codenamed NE-OS1, S2, S3, S4 and S5) as corrosion inhibitors on carbon steel AISI 1020 in saline media (NaCl 3.5%) were evaluated by measurement of Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Polarization Curves (Tafel extrapolation method) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The analyzed NE-OS1 and NE-OS2 systems were found to be mixed inhibitors with quantitative efficacy (98.6% - 99.7%) for concentrations of Tween 80 ranging between 9 and 85 ppm. According to the EIS technique, maximum corrosion efficiency was observed for some tested NE-OS samples. Additionaly to the electrochemical studies, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used, characterization of the nanoemulsion tested systems and adsorption studies, respectively, which confirmed the results observed in the experimental analyses using diluted NE-OS samples in lower concentrations of Tween 80 (0.5 1.75 ppm)

No presente trabalho de tese é apresentada uma nova técnica de empilhamento de dados sísmicos para a obtenção da seção de incidência normal ou afastamento fonte-receptor nulo, aplicável em meios bidimensionais com variações laterais de velocidade. Esta nova técnica denominada Empilhamento Sísmico pela Composição de Ondas Planas (empilhamento PWC) foi desenvolvida tomando como base os conceitos físicos e matemáticos da decomposição do campo de ondas em ondas planas. Este trabalho pode ser dividido em três partes: Uma primeira parte, onde se apresenta uma revisão da técnica de empilhamento sísmico convencional e do processo de decomposição do campo de ondas produzido a partir de fontes pontuais em suas correspondentes ondas planas. Na segunda parte, é apresentada a formulação matemática e o procedimento de aplicação do método de empilhamento sísmico pela composição de ondas planas. Na terceira parte se apresenta a aplicação desta nova técnica de empilhamento na serie de dados Marmousi e uma analise sobre a atenuação de ruído. A formulação matemática desta nova técnica de empilhamento sísmico foi desenvolvida com base na teoria do espalhamento aplicado a ondas sísmicas sob a restrição do modelo de aproximação de Born. Nesse sentido, inicialmente se apresenta a determinação da solução da equação de onda caustica para a configuração com afastamento fonte-receptor finito, que posteriormente é reduzido para a configuração de afastamento fonte-receptor nulo. Por outra parte, com base nessas soluções, a expressão matemática deste novo processo de empilhamento sísmico é resolvida dentro do contexto do modelo de aproximação de Born. Verificou-se que as soluções encontradas por ambos procedimentos, isto é, por meio da solução da equação da onda e pelo processo de empilhamento proposto, são iguais, mostrando-se assim que o processo de empilhamento pela composição de ondas planas produz uma seção com afastamento fonte-receptor nulo. Esta nova técnica de empilhamento basicamente consiste na aplicação de uma dupla decomposição do campo de ondas em onda planas por meio da aplicação de dois empilhamentos oblíquos (slant stack), isto é um ao longo do arranjo das fontes e outro ao longo do arranjo dos detectores; seguido pelo processo de composição das ondas planas por meio do empilhamento obliquo inverso. Portanto, com base nestas operações e com a ajuda de um exemplo de aplicação nos dados gerados a partir de um modelo simples, são descritos os fundamentos e o procedimento de aplicação (ou algoritmo) desta nova técnica de obtenção da seção de afastamento nulo. Como exemplo de aplicação do empilhamento PWC em dados correspondentes a um meio com variações laterais de velocidade, foi aplicado nos dados Marmousi gerados segundo a técnica de cobertura múltipla a partir de um modelo que representa uma situação geológica real. Por comparação da seção resultante com a similar produzida pelo método de empilhamento convencional, observa-se que a seção de afastamento nulo desta nova técnica apresenta melhor definição e continuidade dos reflectores, como também uma melhor caracterização da ocorrência de difrações. Por último, da atenuação de ruído aleatório realizada nos mesmos dados, observa-se que esta técnica de empilhamento também produz uma atenuação do ruído presente no sinal, a qual implica um aumento na relação sinal ruído.
