In order to use the finite element method for solving fluid-rock interaction problems in pore-fluid saturated hydrothermal/sedimentary basins effectively and efficiently, we have presented, in this paper, the new concept and numerical algorithms to deal with the fundamental issues associated with the fluid-rock interaction problems. These fundamental issues are often overlooked by some purely numerical modelers. (1) Since the fluid-rock interaction problem involves heterogeneous chemical reactions between reactive aqueous chemical species in the pore-fluid and solid minerals in the rock masses, it is necessary to develop the new concept of the generalized concentration of a solid mineral, so that two types of reactive mass transport equations, namely, the conventional mass transport equation for the aqueous chemical species in the pore-fluid and the degenerated mass transport equation for the solid minerals in the rock mass, can be solved simultaneously in computation. (2) Since the reaction area between the pore-fluid and mineral surfaces is basically a function of the generalized concentration of the solid mineral, there is a definite need to appropriately consider the dependence of the dissolution rate of a dissolving mineral on its generalized concentration in the numerical analysis. (3) Considering the direct consequence of the porosity evolution with time in the transient analysis of fluid-rock interaction problems; we have proposed the term splitting algorithm and the concept of the equivalent source/sink terms in mass transport equations so that the problem of variable mesh Peclet number and Courant number has been successfully converted into the problem of constant mesh Peclet and Courant numbers. The numerical results from an application example have demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed concepts and the robustness of the proposed numerical algorithms in dealing with fluid-rock interaction problems in pore-fluid saturated hydrothermal/sedimentary basins. The amount of crystalline fraction present in monohydrate glucose crystal-solution mixture up to 110% crystal in relation to solution (crystal:solution=110:100) was determined by water activity measurement. It was found that the water activity had a strong linear correlation (R-2=0.994) with the amount of glucose present above saturation. Difference in the water activities of the crystal-solution mixture (a(w1)) and the supersaturated solution (a(w2)) by re-dissolving the crystalline fraction allowed calculation of the amount of crystalline phase present (DeltaG) in the mixture by an equation DeltaG=846.97(a(w1)-a(w2)). Other methods such as Raoult's, Norrish and Money-Born equations were also tested for the prediction of water activity of supersaturated glucose solution. Aim To report clinical complications (pain, necrotic gingival tissue and bone sequestration) resulting from accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite. Summary Root canal treatment is a routine clinical procedure with few reported complications. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is commonly used as an irrigant during the procedure because of its tissue-dissolving, antibacterial and lubricating properties. This paper presents a case in which accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite into the lingual gingiva of a female patient caused gingival and bone necrosis. Surgical intervention was required. Key learning points Sodium hypochlorite is dangerous if injected into the tissues. The presentation of sodium hypochlorite in glass, anaesthetic type cartridges is potentially dangerous, and should be condemned. All healthcare workers should check carefully the contents of any syringe before injecting into patients.

A realização desta tese tinha como principal objectivo determinar a concentração de cobre, cobalto e molibdénio em alimentos seleccionados. Foram determinadas as concentrações de cobre, cobalto e molibdénio em feijões vermelho, feijões castanho, feijões branco, dois tipos de amêndoas, dois tipos de nozes e amendoins. Todos estes alimentos foram comprados e analisados na República Checa. Para a análise destes alimentos foi usado o método analítico Espectrometria de Massa Acoplada a Plasma Indutivo (ICP-MS). Antes de efectuar a análise foi necessário fazer um tratamento prévio que consistia na digestão do alimento no microondas, utilizando-se uma massa de 1 grama de alimento, 5 ml de HNO3 e 2 ml de H2O2. O alimento que tem maior concentração de cobre é as nozes fornecida pela empresa Fit Line (8,7 ± 0,6 μg/g) e o que tem a menor concentração de cobre são os amendoins (3,2 ± 0,2 μg/g). Em relação ao cobalto o alimento que tem a maior concentração de cobalto é feijão do tipo castanho (0,106 ± 0,005 μg/g) e o que apresenta a menor concentração é as amêndoas do tipo 2 (0,019 ± 0,003 μg/g). Para o molibdénio o alimento que apresenta uma maior concentração é o feijão do tipo branco (5,3 ± 0,6 μg/g) e o que tem a menor concentração é as nozes do tipo 2 (0,10 ± 0,01 μg/g).

The reactions between 4'-phenyl-terpyridine (L) and nitrate, acetate or chloride Cu(II) salts led to the formation of [Cu(NO3)(2)L] (1), [Cu(OCOCH3)(2)L]center dot CH2Cl2 (2 center dot CH2Cl2)and [CuCl2L]center dot[Cu(Cl)(mu-Cl)L](2) (3), respectively. Upon dissolving 1 in mixtures of DMSO-MeOH or EtOH-DMF the compounds [Cu(H2O){OS(CH3)(2)}L]-(NO3)(2) (4) and [Cu(HO)(CH3CH2OH)L](NO3) (5) were obtained, in this order. Reaction of 3 with AgSO3CF3 led to [CuCl(OSO2CF3)L] (6). The compounds were characterized by ESI-MS, IR, elemental analysis, electrochemical techniques and, for 2-6, also by single crystal X-ray diffraction. They undergo, by cyclic voltammetry, two single-electron irreversible reductions assigned to Cu(II) -> Cu(I)and Cu(I) -> Cu(0) and, for those of the same structural type, the reduction potential appears to correlate with the summation of the values of the Lever electrochemical EL ligand parameter, which is reported for the first time for copper complexes. Complexes 1-6 in combination with TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl radical) can exhibit a high catalytic activity, under mild conditions and in alkaline aqueous solution, for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols. Molar yields up to 94% (based on the alcohol) with TON values up to 320 were achieved after 22 h.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from the Zn-Pb(-Ag-Bi-Cu) deposit of Cerro de Pasco (Central Peru) and waste water from a Cu-extraction plant has been discharged since 1981 into Lake Yanamate, a natural lake with carbonate bedrock. The lake has developed a highly acidic pH of similar to 1. Mean lake water chemistry was characterized by 16,775 mg/L acidity as CaCO(3), 4330 mg/L Fe and 29,250 mg/L SO(4). Mean trace element concentrations were 86.8 mg/L Cu, 493 mg/L Zn, 2.9 mg/L Pb and 48 mg/L As, which did not differ greatly from the discharged AMD. Most elements showed increasing concentrations from the surface to the lake bottom at a maximal depth of 41 m (e.g. from 3581 to 5433 mg/L Fe and 25,609 to 35,959 mg/L SO(4)). The variations in the H and 0 isotope compositions and the element concentrations within the upper 10 m of the water column suggest mixing with recently discharged AMD, shallow groundwater and precipitation waters. Below 15 m a stagnant zone had developed. Gypsum (saturation index, SI similar to 0.25) and anglesite (SI similar to 0.1) were in equilibrium with lake water. Jarosite was oversaturated (SI similar to 1.7) in the upper part of the water column, resulting in downward settling and re-dissolution in the lower part of the water column (SI similar to -0.7). Accordingly, jarosite was only found in sediments from less than 7 m water depth. At the lake bottom, a layer of gel-like material (similar to 90 wt.% water) of pH similar to 1 with a total organic C content of up to 4.40 wet wt.% originated from the kerosene discharge of the Cu-extraction plant and had contaminant element concentrations similar to the lake water. Below the organic layer followed a layer of gypsum with pH 1.5, which overlaid the dissolving carbonate sediments of pH 5.3-7. In these two layers the contaminant elements were enriched compared to lake water in the sequence As < Pb approximate to Cu < Cd < Zn = Mn with increasing depth. This sequence of enrichment was explained by the following processes: (i) adsorption of As on Fe-hydroxides coating plant roots at low pH (up to 3326 mg/kg As), (ii) adsorption at increasing pH near the gypsum/calcite boundary (up to 1812 mg/kg Pb, 2531 mg/kg Cu. and 36 mg/kg Cd), and (iii) precipitation of carbonates (up to 5177 mg/kg Zn and 810 mg/kg Mn: all data corrected to a wet base). The infiltration rate was approximately equal to the discharge rate, thus gypsum and hydroxide precipitation had not resulted in complete clogging of the lake bedrocks. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Twenty-six species of white-rotting Agaricomycotina fungi (Basidiomycota) were screened for their ability to produce calcium-oxalate (CaOx) crystals in vitro. Most were able to produce CaOx crystals in malt agar medium in the absence of additional calcium. In the same medium enriched with Ca2+, all the species produced CaOx crystals (weddellite or whewellite). Hyphae of four species (Ganoderma lucidum, Polyporus ciliatus, Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, and Trametes versicolor) were found coated with crystals (weddellite/whewellite). The production of CaOx crystals during the growth phase was confirmed by an investigation of the production kinetics for six of the species considered in the initial screening (Pleurotus citrinopileatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus ostreatus, P. cinnabarinus, Trametes suaveolens, and T. versicolor). However, the crystals produced during the growth phase disappeared from the medium over time in four of the six species (P. citrinopileatus, P. eryngii, P. cinnabarinus, and T. suaveolens). For P. cinnabarinus, the disappearance of the crystals was correlated with a decrease in the total oxalate concentration measured in the medium from 0.65 μg mm−2 (at the maximum accumulation rate) to 0.30 μg mm−2. The decrease in the CaOx concentration was correlated with a change in mycelia morphology. The oxalate dissolution capability of all the species was also tested in a medium containing calcium oxalate as the sole source of carbon (modified Schlegel medium). Three species (Agaricus blazei, Pleurotus tuberregium, and P. ciliatus) presented a dissolution halo around the growth zone. This study shows that CaOx crystal production is a widespread phenomenon in white-rot fungi, and that an excess of Ca2+ can enhance CaOx crystal production. In addition, it shows that some white-rot fungal species are capable of dissolving CaOx crystals after growth has ceased. These results highlight a diversity of responses around the production or dissolution of calcium oxalate in white-rot fungi and reveal an unexpected potential importance of fungi on the oxalate cycle in the environment.

El règim econòmic matrimonial català i el de l’estat de Nova York presenten un paral·lelisme estructural important ja que tots dos territoris han adoptat el mateix règim econòmic matrimonial, el de separació de béns. No obstant, la seva implementació i la conseqüent pràctica jurisprudencial difereix significativament. El dret de família de l’estat de Nova York, se situa en un context de common law, és a dir, en un sistema judicial que evoluciona ràpidament i s’adapta relativament ràpid a les necessitats d’una realitat social que està en constant evolució. El legislador català, tot i que ha fet esforços a nivell de donar respostes als nous reptes plantejat per la realitat familiar catalana, encara està lluny de fer front a problemes d’aplicació que sovint planteja el règim econòmic matrimonial dels cònjuges catalans. D’altra banda, la realitat social catalana no és significativament diferent a la realitat nord-americana ateses les noves composicions familiars amb famílies monoparentals, fills de diferents matrimonis i una alta proporció de divorcis per matrimoni. D’altra banda, l’estructura patrimonial de les famílies, tant les catalanes com les novaiorqueses també presenten una estructura patrimonial similar formada no només per la residència habitual sinó per patrimoni intangible i per inversions que comencen a meritar durant el matrimoni però que vencen una vegada aquest vincle s’ha dissolt. Ha resultat constructiu, doncs, comparar els règims i extreure lliçons del règim novaiorquès que s’han revelat molt útils per a la nostra pràctica catalana. Així doncs, l’objectiu d’aquest projecte de recerca ha estat estudiar el règim econòmic matrimonial català i el novaiorquès que ha culminat amb la formulació de propostes normatives i de pràctica jurisprudencial que permetran modernitzar i actualitzar l’aplicació del règim econòmic matrimonial català i d’aquesta manera adaptar-lo a la nova realitat social i econòmica de les famílies catalanes.

A fast and reliable assay for the identification of dermatophyte fungi and nondermatophyte fungi (NDF) in onychomycosis is essential, since NDF are especially difficult to cure using standard treatment. Diagnosis is usually based on both direct microscopic examination of nail scrapings and macroscopic and microscopic identification of the infectious fungus in culture assays. In the last decade, PCR assays have been developed for the direct detection of fungi in nail samples. In this study, we describe a PCR-terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) assay to directly and routinely identify the infecting fungi in nails. Fungal DNA was easily extracted using a commercial kit after dissolving nail fragments in an Na(2)S solution. Trichophyton spp., as well as 12 NDF, could be unambiguously identified by the specific restriction fragment size of 5'-end-labeled amplified 28S DNA. This assay enables the distinction of different fungal infectious agents and their identification in mixed infections. Infectious agents could be identified in 74% (162/219) of cases in which the culture results were negative. The PCR-TRFLP assay described here is simple and reliable. Furthermore, it has the possibility to be automated and thus routinely applied to the rapid diagnosis of a large number of clinical specimens in dermatology laboratories.

The presence of cavities filled with new minerals in carbonate rocks is a common feature in oil reservoirs and lead-zinc deposits. Since groundwater equilibrates rapidly with carbonates, the presence of dissolution cavities in deep carbonate host rocks is a paradox. Two alternative geochemical processes have been proposed to dissolve carbonates at depth: hydrogen sulfide oxidation to sulfuric acid, and metal sulfide precipitation. With the aid of geochemical modeling we show that mixing two warm solutions saturated with carbonate results in a new solution that dissolves limestone. Variations in the proportion of the end-member fluids can also form a supersaturated mixture and fill the cavity with a new generation of carbonate. Mixing is in general more effective in dissolving carbonates than the aforementioned processes. Moreover, mixing is consistent with the wide set of textures and mineral proportions observed in cavity infillings.

A novel and simple procedure for concentrating adenoviruses from seawater samples is described. The technique entails the adsorption of viruses to pre-flocculated skimmed milk proteins, allowing the flocs to sediment by gravity, and dissolving the separated sediment in phosphate buffer. Concentrated virus may be detected by PCR techniques following nucleic acid extraction. The method requires no specialized equipment other than that usually available in routine public health laboratories, and due to its straightforwardness it allows the processing of a larger number of water samples simultaneously. The usefulness of the method was demonstrated in concentration of virus in multiple seawater samples during a survey of adenoviruses in coastal waters.
