Inserido no contexto das relações estabelecidas entre saúde mental e trabalho, este estudo tem por objetivo analisar as vivências de sofrimento psíquico dos servidores responsáveis pela execução dos serviços socioassistenciais da rede de Proteção Social da FUNPAPA, enfatizando as estratégias que desenvolvem para realizar o seu trabalho de forma a colocarem-se no âmbito da “normalidade”. Pautado nas contribuições da psicodinâmica do trabalho e nos referenciais do campo da saúde do trabalhador, o enfoque teórico-metodológico desta pesquisa consiste em uma abordagem qualitativa, cuja coleta de dados envolveu entrevistas individuais semi-estruturadas e observação participante. A análise dos dados, realizada através da técnica de análise de conteúdo, apontou aspectos relacionados às condições de trabalho e à organização do trabalho atuando como desencadeantes de vivências de sofrimento psíquico, as quais se expressam em ansiedade, insatisfação, medo, tédio, repugnância, dentre outras manifestações. Os aspectos relacionados às más condições de trabalho que desencadeiam o sofrimento psíquico dos servidores da FUNPAPA são: espaço físico sem a adaptação necessária para o atendimento dos usuários, equipamentos obsoletos e/ou com funcionamento defeituoso, escala de veículos irregular e condições ambientais insalubres devido à infiltrações constantes. Como elementos constituintes da organização do trabalho que funcionam como determinantes do sofrimento psíquico vivenciado pelos servidores da FUNPAPA podemos citar: o atendimento aos usuários, a capacitação profissional inadequada ao trabalho que desenvolvem, a avaliação de desempenho, a ausência de reconhecimento social, o quantitativo reduzido de servidores, a rede socioassistencial deficitária e a impotência diante dos limites da política de assistência social para fazer frente às demandas sociais postas a esses servidores. Para lidar com as vivências de sofrimento psíquico de modo a evitar a doença e a loucura esses servidores adotam estratégias de defesa de proteção, incluindo: a racionalização, a religiosidade, os laços de confiança e solidariedade, o absenteísmo, a antecipação das férias, o investimento em atividades desenvolvidas fora da jornada de trabalho, o trabalho itinerante na comunidade e a busca de soluções alternativas para tornar o ambiente físico o mais acolhedor possível. Desta forma, a estrutura deste trabalho abrange três momentos: a referência empírica, o aporte teórico e a discussão dos resultados, respectivamente. Por último, à guisa de conclusão, são apontadas algumas notas para subsidiar uma proposta de promoção da saúde mental no trabalho.

A Saúde do trabalhador pode ser entendida como uma condição concreta e dinâmica da qual o trabalhador dispõe para traçar e perseguir seus objetivos em direção ao bem-estar físico, psíquico e social, sendo influenciada pelas condições e organização do trabalho no contexto ao qual está inserido. Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar e analisar o processo de trabalho no sistema Prisional e de que forma podem estar influenciando nos modos de subjetivação dos trabalhadores prisionais do Pará, possibilitando a ocorrência de sofrimento psíquico. Constitui-se em um estudo de caso com abordagem qualitativa que teve como instrumento de pesquisa a observação participante ou direta com entrevistas semi-estruturadas com os servidores prisionais selecionados. A análise do processo de trabalho e as formas que podem influenciar nos modos de subjetivação do servidor prisional para que este se mantenha saudável ou doente, foram baseados na interpretação dos resultados, que foram consubstanciados nos dados coletados na entrevista e na observação participante, na escuta e na interpretação das falas dos trabalhadores do Centro de Recuperação de Castanhal de acordo com a abordagem da Psicodinâmica do Trabalho, por ser uma clínica que busca desenvolver o campo da saúde mental e trabalho. Os principais resultados foram: (I) que o estabelecimento penal apresentou condições de infra-estrutura inadequadas e precárias, necessitando de reformas constantes, falta de equipamentos para desenvolver o trabalho, o número insuficiente de recursos humanos e a convivência com a superlotação prisional, que não difere do restante das prisões brasileiras. (II) o processo de trabalho observado é exaustivo, pelo número insuficiente de recursos humanos, carga horária exaustiva e cobrança para desenvolver um bom trabalho mesmo diante das condições encontradas. (III) servidores penitenciários vulneráveis e expostos ao sofrimento psíquico pela condição do trabalho; pelo tipo de vínculo trabalhista temporário que a grande maioria se encontra; pelo estigma e desvalorização neste tipo de trabalho. Onde estes para manterem-se saudáveis diante das ameaças do meio utilizam-se de estratégias defensivas, como o afastamento subjetivo, em que o servidor deixa de pensar e falar sobre o trabalho. (IV) Diante do exposto sobre a condição e dinâmica do trabalho vejo um otimismo por parte dos servidores, quanto à possibilidade de construir-se um processo de saúde do trabalhador no sistema carcerário brasileiro, acreditando na implementação de políticas públicas viáveis, para o sistema penitenciário, proporcionando ao trabalhador melhores condições de saúde.

Non-myrmecophilous lepidopteran larvae using plants bearing ant attractants such as extrafloral nectaries are good models for studying morphological and behavioural mechanisms against ant predation. Udranomia spitzi (Hesperiidae) is a butterfly whose larvae feed on leaves of Ouratea spectabilis (Ochnaceae), a plant with extrafloral nectaries. We described the early stages of U. spitzi, and used field observations and experiments to investigate the defensive strategies of caterpillars against predatory ants. Larvae pass through five instars and pupation occurs inside larval leaf shelters. Ant-exclusion experiments revealed that the presence of ants did not affect significantly caterpillar survival. Predation experiments showed that vulnerability to ant predation decreased with increase in larval size. The present study showed that predatory ants are not as relevant as demonstrated for other systems, and also illustrates how observational data and field experiments can contribute to a better understanding of the biology and ecology of a species of interest.

Root herbivores are important ecosystem drivers and agricultural pests, and, possibly as a consequence, plants protect their roots using a variety of defensive strategies. One aspect that distinguishes belowground from aboveground plant–insect interactions is that roots are constantly exposed to a set of soil-specific abiotic factors. These factors can profoundly influence root resistance, and, consequently, the outcome of the interaction with belowground feeders. In this review, we synthesize the current literature on the impact of soil moisture, nutrients, and texture on root–herbivore interactions. We show that soil abiotic factors influence the interaction by modulating herbivore abundance and behaviour, root growth and resistance, beneficial microorganisms, as well as natural enemies of the herbivores. We suggest that abiotic heterogeneity may explain the high variability that is often encountered in root–herbivore systems. We also propose that under abiotic stress, the relative fitness value of the roots and the potential negative impact of herbivory increases, which may lead to a higher defensive investment and an increased recruitment of beneficial microorganisms by the plant. At the same time, both root-feeding herbivores and natural enemies are likely to decrease in abundance under extreme environmental conditions, leading to a context- and species-specific impact on plant fitness. Only by using tightly controlled experiments that include soil abiotic heterogeneity will it be possible to understand the impact of root feeders on an ecosystem scale and to develop predictive models for pest occurrence and impact.

Herbivore attack leads to resource conflicts between plant defensive strategies. Photoassimilates are required for defensive compounds and carbon storage below ground and may therefore be depleted or enriched in the roots of herbivore-defoliated plants. The potential role of belowground tissues as mediators of induced tolerance–defense trade-offs is unknown. We evaluated signaling and carbohydrate dynamics in the roots of Nicotiana attenuata following Manduca sexta attack. Experimental and natural genetic variability was exploited to link the observed metabolite patterns to plant tolerance and resistance. Leaf-herbivore attack decreased sugar and starch concentrations in the roots and reduced regrowth from the rootstock and flower production in the glasshouse and the field. Leaf-derived jasmonates were identified as major regulators of this root-mediated resource-based trade-off: lower jasmonate levels were associated with decreased defense, increased carbohydrate levels and improved regrowth from the rootstock. Application and transport inhibition experiments, in combination with silencing of the sucrose non-fermenting (SNF) -related kinase GAL83, indicated that auxins may act as additional signals that regulate regrowth patterns. In conclusion, our study shows that the ability to mobilize defenses has a hidden resource-based cost below ground that constrains defoliation tolerance. Jasmonate- and auxin-dependent mechanisms may lead to divergent defensive plant strategies against herbivores in nature.

Determining links between plant defence strategies is important to understand plant evolution and to optimize crop breeding strategies. Although several examples of synergies and trade-offs between defence traits are known for plants that are under attack by multiple organisms, few studies have attempted to measure correlations of defensive strategies using specific single attackers. Such links are hard to detect in natural populations because they are inherently confounded by the evolutionary history of different ecotypes. We therefore used a range of 20 maize inbred lines with considerable differences in resistance traits to determine if correlations exist between leaf and root resistance against pathogens and insects. Aboveground resistance against insects was positively correlated with the plant's capacity to produce volatiles in response to insect attack. Resistance to herbivores and resistance to a pathogen, on the other hand, were negatively correlated. Our results also give first insights into the intraspecific variability of root volatiles release in maize and its positive correlation with leaf volatile production. We show that the breeding history of the different genotypes (dent versus flint) has influenced several defensive parameters. Taken together, our study demonstrates the importance of genetically determined synergies and trade-offs for plant resistance against insects and pathogens.

Traditionally, ice-binding proteins (IBPs), also known as antifreeze proteins (AFPs), have been defined by two universal activities: ice recrystallization inhibition and thermal hysteresis. However, there remains the possibility IBPs have other complementary functions given the diversity found within this protein group. This thesis explores some of these in both natural and applied settings, in the hopes of furthering our understanding of this remarkable group of proteins. Plant IBPs could function as part of a defensive strategy against ice nucleators produced by certain pathogens. To assess this hypothesis, recombinant IBPs from perennial ryegrass and purple false brome were combined with the ice nucleation protein (INP) from the plant pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae. Strikingly, the plant proteins depressed the freezing point of the bacterial INP, while a fish AFP could not, nor did the INPs have any effect on IBP activity. Thus, the interaction between these two different proteins suggests a role in plant defensive strategies against pathogenic bacteria as another IBP function. In addition, the potential use of hyperactive insect IBPs in organ preservation was investigated. Current kidney preservation techniques involve storing the organ at 4 °C for a maximum of 24 h prior to transplantation. Extending this “safe” time would have profound effects on renal transplants, however, ischemic injury is prevalent when storage periods are prolonged. Experiments described here allowed subzero preservation for 72 h with the addition of a beetle IBP to CryoStasis® solution. Kidneys stored using the traditional technique for 24 h and the method developed here for 72 h showed similar levels of biomarker enzymes, underscoring the potential utility of insect IBPs for future transplant purposes. Finally, IBP function in the freeze-tolerant gall fly, Eurosta solidaginis, was examined. Larvae representing the mid-autumn stage displayed ice-binding activity, suggesting an IBP is being expressed, possibly as a protective measure against freezing damage when fall temperatures can unpredictably drop. IBP activity was also observed in the larvae’s host plant, Solidago spp. Mass spectrometry analysis of ice-affinity purified plant extracts provided three candidate pathogenesis-related proteins that could be responsible for the detected activity, further demonstrating additional functions of IBPs.

Cette thèse propose une lecture anthropologique de la consommation d’alcool. Elle met de l’avant une approche novatrice qui repose sur le concept de « métaphysique du quasi- arrêt ». Cette approche a été développée à la suite d’une recherche ethnographique réalisée dans la région de la Beauce, au Québec. Au lieu de considérer la consommation d’alcool comme un problème social ou de santé publique, j’ai cherché à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’on boit, en Beauce, en me laissant guider par les buveurs et les buveuses côtoyés sur place. En prenant part à de nombreuses soirées où la bière est omniprésente, que ce soit dans les garages, les bars ou l’aréna local, je me suis laissé affecter par les sensations ressenties et par les paroles prononcées lorsque les buveurs éprouvent ce qu’ils appellent le « feeling du moment ». En prenant du recul, j’ai constaté que les Beaucerons qui boivent ont développé des stratégies défensives pour échapper à la tentative de contrôle de la société québécoise sur leurs conduites alcooliques et, plus largement, sur l’alcoolisme. En effet, dans la perspective de la « métaphysique du quasi-arrêt », la quantité de verres consommés n’a d’importance qu’eu égard au « feeling du moment »; les normes culturelles ou médicales liées à la consommation d’alcool ne tiennent pas, et c’est pourquoi cette approche permet d’expliquer des discours et des pratiques liés à la consommation d’alcool qui, à première vue, semblent paradoxaux, voire complètement absurdes. Pour bien montrer en quoi l’approche mise de l’avant se distingue, mais surtout pour expliquer comment la consommation excessive d’alcool en est venue à représenter, en anthropologie comme dans d’autres disciplines, une pratique problématique qu’il faut comprendre pour la combattre, une première partie de la thèse consiste en une mise en perspective historique de l’alcoolisme en tant que concept scientifique et enjeu de société. Y sont passées en revue les approches et concepts développés, depuis la fin du XVIIe siècle, par des médecins, des psychologues, des économistes, des sociologues et des anthropologues euro-américains pour aborder ce genre de consommation. Je suggère que ces scientifiques mènent, depuis plus de deux siècles, une véritable croisade contre les « buveurs excessifs ». Collaborant avec l’État, les mouvements de tempérance et les entreprises privées, ils ont contribué à contenir les abus d’alcool en Occident. Dans la seconde partie de la thèse, l’ethnographie sert de support au déploiement de la perspective théorique développée à l’issue du travail de terrain. Il s’agit d’analyser comment les buveurs d’alcool vivent et font durer le « feeling du moment » au cours du boire social. Sur le terrain, j’ai découvert que les buveurs d’alcool ont inventé onze stratégies pour vivre et faire durer le « feeling du moment » en consommant de l’alcool avec les autres. Ces stratégies constituent une forme de résistance face à une société qui cherche à contrôler les conduites alcooliques.

These longitudinal studies focused on investigating young adults during transition into a new educational environment. The aims were to examine: (1) what kinds of achievement and social strategies young adults deploy, (2) whether the deployment of these strategies predicts people's success in their studies, their life events, their peer relationships, and their well-being, (3) whether young adults' success in dealing with educational transition (e.g. success in studies, life events, peer relationships and well-being) predict changes in their strategies and well-being, and (4) the associations between young adults' social strategies, interpersonal behaviour, person perception, and their peer relationships and satisfaction with them. The participants were students from Helsinki university and from two vocational institutes (the numbers ranging between 92 and 303). The results revealed that achievement and social strategies contributed to individuals' success in dealing with both the academic and interpersonal challenges of a new environment. Social strategies were also associated with online interpersonal behaviour and person perception, which mediated their impact on peer relationships. Achievement and social strategies changed as a result of environmental feedback. However, they also showed high stability, forming reciprocal and cumulative associations with the feedback the individuals received about their success in dealing with educational transition: the use of functional strategies, such as optimistic, defensive-pessimistic and planning-oriented strategies, increased their success, which in turn enhanced their well-being and further deployment of functional strategies. The opposite was true in the case of dysfunctional strategies, such as self-handicapping and avoidance. The aim of this Master’s thesis has been to shed light on the response strategies that organizations are implementing when facing a crisis created on or amplified by social media. Since the development of social media in the late 1990s, the interplay between the online and the offline spheres has become more complex, and characterized by dynamics of a new magnitude, as exemplified by the wave of “Twitter” Revolutions or the Wikileaks scandal in the mid 2000s, where online behaviors deeply affected an offline reality. The corporate world does not escape to this worldwide phenomenon, and there are more and more examples of organizational reputations destroyed by social media “fireballs”. As such, this research aims to investigate, through the analysis of six recent cases of corporate crises (2013-2015) from France and Brazil, different strategies currently in use in order to identify examples of good and bad practices for companies to adopt or avoid when facing a social media crisis. The first part of this research is dedicated to a review of the literature on crisis management and social media. From that review, we were able to design a matrix model, the Social Media Crisis Management Matrix, with which we analyzed the response strategies of the six companies we selected. This model allows the conceptualization of social media crises in a multidimensional matrix built to allow the choice, according to four parameters, of the most efficient (that is: which will limit the reputational damage) response strategy. Attribution of responsibility for the crisis to the company by stakeholders, the origin of the crisis (internal or external), the degree of reputational threat, and the emotions conveyed online by stakeholders help companies determining whether to adopt a defensive response, or an accommodative response. The results of the analysis suggest that social media crises are rather manichean objects for they are, unlike their traditional offline counterparts, characterized by emotional involvement and irrationality, and cannot be dealt with traditionally. Thus analyzing the emotions of stakeholders proved to be, in these cases, an accurate thermometer of the seriousness of the crisis, and as such, a better rudder to follow when selecting a response strategy. Consequently, in the cases, companies minimized their reputational damage when responding to their stakeholders in an accommodative way, regardless of the “objective” situation, which might be a change of paradigm in crisis management.

The perforation of the plasmalemma by pore-forming toxins causes an influx of Ca(2+) and an efflux of cytoplasmic constituents. In order to ensure survival, the cell needs to identify, plug and remove lesions from its membrane. Quarantined by membrane folds and isolated by membrane fusion, the pores are removed from the plasmalemma and expelled into the extracellular space. Outward vesiculation and microparticle shedding seem to be the strategies of choice to eliminate toxin-perforated membrane regions from the plasmalemma of host cells. Depending on the cell type and the nature of injury, the membrane lesion can also be taken up by endocytosis and degraded internally. Host cells make excellent use of an initial, moderate rise in intracellular [Ca(2+)], which triggers containment of the toxin-inflicted damage and resealing of the damaged plasmalemma. Additional Ca(2+)-dependent defensive cellular actions range from the release of effector molecules in order to warn neighbouring cells, to the activation of caspases for the initiation of apoptosis in order to eliminate heavily damaged, dysregulated cells. Injury to the plasmalemma by bacterial toxins can be prevented by the early sequestration of bacterial toxins. Artificial liposomes can act as a decoy system preferentially binding and neutralizing bacterial toxins.
