In the near future experiments will be able to produce charmed hadrons almost at rest in the interior of an atomic nucleus. One of the most exciting perspectives is the possibility of studying charmonium in a dense medium. In the present communication we present results of a study that explores the possibility that J/Ψ might be bound in a large nucleus through the excitation of intermediate states of D and D* mesons. We also present results of a recent prediction for the production of Λ̄ c -Λc + in proton-antiproton annihilation experiments. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Correlators of singlet and octet axial currents, as well as anomaly and pseudoscalar densities have been studied using QCD sum rules. Several of these sum rules are used to determine the couplings f(eta)(8),f(eta)(0), f(eta)('8) and f(eta)('0). We find mutually consistent values which are also in agreement with phenomenological values obtained from data on various decay and production rates. While most of the sum rules studied by us are independent of the contributions of direct instantons and screening correction, the singlet-singlet current correlator and the anomaly-anomaly correlator improve by their inclusion.

Several excited states of Ds and Bs mesons have been discovered in the last six years: BaBar, Cleo and Belle discovered the very narrow states D(s0)*(2317)+- and D(s1)(2460)+- in 2003, and CDF and DO Collaborations reported the observation of two narrow Bs resonances, B(s1)(5830)0 and B*(s2)(5840)0 in 2007. To keep up with experiment, meson excited states should be studied from the theoretical aspect as well. The theory that describes the interaction between quarks and gluons is quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this thesis the properties of the meson states are studied using the discretized version of the theory - lattice QCD. This allows us to perform QCD calculations from first principles, and "measure" not just energies but also the radial distributions of the states on the lattice. This gives valuable theoretical information on the excited states, as we can extract the energy spectrum of a static-light meson up to D wave states (states with orbital angular momentum L=2). We are thus able to predict where some of the excited meson states should lie. We also pay special attention to the order of the states, to detect possible inverted spin multiplets in the meson spectrum, as predicted by H. Schnitzer in 1978. This inversion is connected to the confining potential of the strong interaction. The lattice simulations can also help us understand the strong interaction better, as the lattice data can be treated as "experimental" data and used in testing potential models. In this thesis an attempt is made to explain the energies and radial distributions in terms of a potential model based on a one-body Dirac equation. The aim is to get more information about the nature of the confining potential, as well as to test how well the one-gluon exchange potential explains the short range part of the interaction.

We have measured the differential cross section for the inclusive production of psi(2S) mesons decaying to mu^{+} mu^{-1} that were produced in prompt or B-decay processes from ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV. These measurements have been made using a data set from an integrated luminosity of 1.1 fb^{-1} collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab. For events with transverse momentum p_{T} (psi(2S)) > 2 GeV/c and rapidity |y(psi(2S))| psi(2S)X) Br(psi(2S) -> mu^{+} mu^{-}) to be 3.29 +- 0.04(stat.) +- 0.32(syst.) nb.

We report a search for narrow resonances, produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, that decay into muon pairs with invariant mass between 6.3 and 9.0 GeV/c^2. The data, collected with the CDF~II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 630 pb$^{-1}$. We use the dimuon invariant mass distribution to set 90% upper credible limits of about 1% to the ratio of the production cross section times muonic branching fraction of possible narrow resonances to that of the $\Upsilon(1{\rm S})$ meson.

The decays of the ψ(3770) resonance to final states that do not contain charmed D mesons are measured for the first time. Using a sample of 9.3pb ^(-1) of e^+e^- annihilations at √s = 3.77 GeV, collected with the Mark III detector at SPEAR, we have measured the branching ratio for the decays ψ(3770) → J/ψπ^(+)π^(-) and γχ_j. These branching ratios together with the electronic widths of the ψ(3685) and ψ(3770) are used to determine the mixing angle between the 2^(3)S_1 and 1^(3)D_1 Charmonium states and are compared with a number of predictions. In addition, evidence is found for other non-DD hadronic final states, such as 3π, 4π, and 5π, as well as η2π, η4π, pp2π and pp3π.

Cross sections for the photoproduction of neutral pi, eta, rho and phi mesons on hydrogen have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center using a missing mass spectrometer technique. The data cover photon energies between 5.0 and 17.8 GeV and four momentum transfer squared t between -.12 and -1.38 (GeV/c)2.

Pion differential cross sections at lower energies show a peak at low momentum transfers, a distinctive dip and secondary maximum for t in the region -.4 to -.9 (GeV /c)2, and a smooth decrease at higher momentum transfers. As photon energy increases, the dip becomes less pronounced, in contradiction to the expectations of simple Regge theories based on the exchange of omega and B trajectories only.

Eta photoproduction was measured only below 10 GeV. The cross section has about the same magnitude as the pion production cross section, but decreases exponentially with t, showing no dip.

Rho mesons appear to be diffractively produced. The differential cross section varies approximately as exp(8.5t + 2t2). It falls slowly with energy, decreasing about 35 percent from 6 GeV to 17.8 GeV. A simple quark model relation appears to describe the data well.

Phi meson cross sections are also consistent with diffraction production. The differential cross section varies approximately as exp(4t). The cross section tends to decrease slightly with photon energy.
