Many young firms face significant resource constraints during attempts to develop and grow. One promising theory that explicitly links to resource constraints is bricolage: a construct developed by Levi Strauss (1967). Bricolage aligns with notions of resourcefulness: using what’s on hand, through making do, and recombining resources for new or novel purposes. In this paper we further theorize and test the moderating effects of ownership team composition on bricolage and firm performance. Our findings suggest that team size, strong network ties, and functionality enhance the effects of bricolage in young firm performance.

Narrating is simultaneously self-interpretation and self-construction. People make sense of their lives and create their identities through an active process of assembling and applying meaning to memories, experiences, thoughts, actions and passions. Such a process can usefully be described as a bricolage: life narratives are created as an assemblage of scattered experiences and events. Through the particular way in which they are arranged, the storyteller constructs what Paul Ricoeur (1992) calls a “narrative identity”; that is, an identity which is organised through and specific to the story told. Applying this notion of narrative as bricolage to ‘Heywire’ – an Australian youth life storytelling project – this paper discusses the unique affordances that the process of storytelling offers in terms of identity and the way new, digital technologies and the internet augment the features of life narratives. It argues that narrative, in addition to new media, offers important tools through which young people who participate in the Heywire project make sense of personal experiences and craft their own identities in powerful and purposeful ways.

Bricolage is one way firms innovate in the midst of resource constraints. In this thesis bricolage in entrepreneurial firms is investigated as is its impact on firm performance. The research provides empirical tests of bricolage and firm performance and tests environmental dynamism and team compositions as moderating effects that impact the bricolage-performance relationship. The limits of bricolage during firm creation are also explored. This research offers several novel theoretical contributions and some suggestions for entrepreneurs who typically use bricolage in attempts of firm creation.

The behavioral theory of “entrepreneurial bricolage attempts to understand what entrepreneurs do when faced with challenges and constraints. Most research about bricolage, defined as “making do by applying combinations of the resources at hand to new problems and opportunities” (Baker & Nelson 2005: 333), has been qualitative and inductive (Garud & Karnoe, 2003). Although this has created a small body of rich descriptions and interesting insights, little deductive theory has been developed and the relationship between bricolage and firm performance has not been systematically tested. In particular, prior research has suggested bricolage can have both beneficial and harmful effects. Ciborra’s (1996) study of Olivetti suggested that bricolage helped Olivetti to adapt, but simultaneously constrained firm effectiveness. Baker & Nelson (2005) suggested that bricolage may be harmful at very high levels, but more helpful if used judiciously. Other research suggests that firm environments may play an important role in shaping the outcomes of bricolage (Fisher, 2012). In this paper, we theorize and provide preliminary test of the bricolage-performance relationship and how it is affected by environmental dynamism.

Many firms initially face significant resource constraints during attempts to develop and grow (Shepherd et al., 2000). One promising theory that explicitly links to ways entrepreneurial firms respond to resource constraints is bricolage (Lévi-Strauss, 1966). Bricolage is defined as “making do by applying combinations of the resources at hand to new problems and opportunities” (Baker & Nelson, 2005, p. 333). Bricolage aligns with notions of resourcefulness: using what’s on hand, through making do, and recombining resources for new or novel purposes. Through a bias for action and a refusal to enact limitations on the resources that are available to create solutions, bricoleurs can tackle unexpected complex challenges, take advantage of opportunities, and go where most other firms won’t, in their attempts at firm development. Bricolage studies have previously not empirically examined the impact of bricolage on firm performance. Our work contributes to the emerging behavioral theory of bricolage by offering the first empirical test evaluating the impact of bricolage on early stage firm performance (i.e. venture emergence in nascent firms and sales in young firms). Using new product development (NPD) theories of speed of development, co-creation and innovativeness, we theorise that bricolage has a positive effect on early stage firm performance. We then introduce environmental dynamism as a moderator which influences this relationship.

On a first reading of this article, one is struck by the complexity of language the authors use. Those of us who write in the social sciences and cultural studies are torn between the tenets of parsimony as present in the discourses of the natural sciences and the dangers of undertheorising our work. One assumes that there is a point that would be a happy medium. Finding that point often seems to be elusive. That said, I find the idea of linguistic sophistication to be appealing and in this sense the authors here have attempted to introduce new language into the world of sports coaching research through a process of reconceptualisation.

Cet article propose d’utiliser notion d’exotisme religieux afin d’analyser au mieux la dissémination des ressources religieuses « autres » dans les sociétés contemporaines et la relation que les acteurs sociaux entretiennent avec ces ressources. Il s’attachera aussi à montrer que cet outil conceptuel permet de reprendre les analyses qui ont été faites des bricolages composés de ressources symboliques variées, et en particulier d’en saisir les logiques culturelles et sociales. En effet, on a peut-être trop souvent surestimé l’éclectisme des combinaisons élaborées par les acteurs sociaux, pris pour acquise la disponibilité des ressources religieuses en présence et manqué de comprendre l’individualisme religieux de manière satisfaisante.

This article suggests that the notion of religious exoticism allows us to analyse better the diffusion of “other” religious resources in contemporary societies as well as the type of engagement individuals develop with the cultural and religious otherness. It will also try to show that this conceptual tool allows to further the analyzes that have been made about the forms of hybridity that combine diverse symbolic resources, and in particular to grasp its cultural and social logics. Indeed, the understanding of hybridity with foreign religions has sometimes over-estimated its eclecticism, taken for granted the availability of religious resources, and misunderstood religious individualism.

This article provides the genealogy of bricolage and underscores the modifications it has undergone within the sociologies of culture and religion. It draws on the study of three new religious movements that teach unconventional versions of Hinduism and kabbalah, to show that the current understanding of bricolage in the studies of popular culture and religion overestimates its eclectic and personal nature and neglects its sociocultural logics. It tends to take for granted the availability of cultural resources used in bricolage, and finally it fails to understand the social significance of individualism, overlooking the ways in which norms and power could be expressed through culture in the contemporary world. This article suggests that it would be best reclaiming bricolages original meaning, prompting questions about the contexts that make certain elements available, social patterns that may organise bricolage, who ‘bricole’, what for, who is empowered, from what and by using whose tradition.

A presente investigação pretende demonstrar o poder dos conteúdos no processo de construção de relações entre marcas e consumidores. Se por um lado visa compreender de que forma é que a comunicação integrada de conteúdos – Content Marketing – pode ser uma ferramenta essencial para a empresa ganhar notoriedade, posicionamento e consequentemente receitas, por outro propõese analisar o papel do Content Marketing como uma das dimensões do Marketing Relacional. O estudo foca-se no mercado de bricolage, direccionado para a marca Leroy Merlin. Foi utilizado o método quantitativo através de inquéritos por questionário a uma amostra de 80 consumidores de bricolage em Portugal. Os resultados permitem concluir que no mercado estudado a qualidade intangível é a variável do marketing relacional com impacto na satisfação de clientes, sendo que para efeitos de fidelização, as variáveis significativas são: o compromisso, os factores do meio-envolvente e a notoriedade. O marketing de conteúdos revelou-se pouco significativo para a obtenção de satisfação e fidelização de clientes, no entanto apresentou um impacto indirecto através da notoriedade que depois terá relação com a satisfação e com a fidelização.

El presente estudio toma como ejemplo la casa popular de Quito para desarrollar un conocimiento que combina tres áreas del conocimiento: la cultura, la arquitectura y la comunicación. A partir de un sistema de referentes visuales y de tradición familiar, el estudio encuentra que la casa popular “comunica”, tanto por fuera como por dentro, que la forma no está separada de las prácticas culturales cotidianas –mediación, reciclaje; significación de espacios y objetos- que se operan en la casa, que ha sido construida mediante autoconstrucción, ubicada generalmente en los bordes de la ciudad. Desde el conjunto arquitectónico hasta el objeto doméstico, y tanto en el exterior como en el interior, el estudio identifica que hay una vocación natural y creativa de realizar lo que Lévi-Strauss denomina el “bricolage, en este caso un bricolage cultural, aplicando un proceso de ensayo e invención, a partir de la utilización de diferentes materiales, formas y significados de los objetos de reciclaje que al final lo comparten, lo exhiben, lo copian y lo vuelven a reciclar entre quienes practican este “modo de vida”. Mediante varios ejemplos se pone en evidencia la versatilidad con la que la cultura popular decodifica los cánones culturales de otros grupos sociales, a fin de incorporarlos en su vida diaria, como una manera de superar su condición de subalternidad.

Nodule is 19'54" musical work for two electronic music performers, two laptop computers and a custom built, sensor-based microphone controller - the e-Mic (Extended Mic-stand Interface Controller). This interface was developed by one of the co-authors, Donna Hewitt. The e-Mic allows a vocal performer to manipulate their voice in real time by capturing physical gestures via an array of sensors - pressure, distance, tilt – in addition to ribbon controllers and an X-Y joystick microphone mount. Performance data are then sent to a computer, running audio-processing software, which is used to transform the audio signal from the microphone in real time. The work seeks to explore the liminal space between the electro-acoustic music tradition and more recent developments in the electronic dance music tradition. It does so on both a performative (gestural) and compositional (sonic) level. Visually, the performance consists of a singer and a laptop performer, hybridising the gestural context of these traditions. On a sonic level, the work explores hybridity at deeper levels of the musical structure than simple bricolage or collage approaches. Hybridity is explored at the level of the sonic gesture (source material), in production (audio processing gestures), in performance gesture, and in approaches to the use of the frequency spectrum, pulse and meter. The work was designed to be performed in a range of contexts from concert halls, to clubs, to rock festivals, across a range of staging and production platforms. As a consequence, the work has been tested in a range of audience contexts, and has allowed the transportation of compositional and performance practices across traditional audience demographic boundaries.

If our only sources of information were the newspapers and the television, the available evidence would suggest that youth is a terrible problem. Not only would we be convinced that most crime is committed by the social category of youth, but that young people are running out of control, that the streets are no longer safe, that all manner of standards are dropping, that the schools are in chaos, and that, as a consequence of these facts, society faces ruin. Fortunately, there is a considerable body of academic literature which rebuts these assertions, and via a more rigorous and objective analysis of society, it has sought to explain the practices, cultures and circumstances through and by which contemporary youth is formed.
