FPGAs and GPUs are often used when real-time performance in video processing is required. An accelerated processor is chosen based on task-specific priorities (power consumption, processing time and detection accuracy), and this decision is normally made once at design time. All three characteristics are important, particularly in battery-powered systems. Here we propose a method for moving selection of processing platform from a single design-time choice to a continuous run time one.We implement Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) detectors for cars and people and Mixture of Gaussians (MoG) motion detectors running across FPGA, GPU and CPU in a heterogeneous system. We use this to detect illegally parked vehicles in urban scenes. Power, time and accuracy information for each detector is characterised. An anomaly measure is assigned to each detected object based on its trajectory and location, when compared to learned contextual movement patterns. This drives processor and implementation selection, so that scenes with high behavioural anomalies are processed with faster but more power hungry implementations, but routine or static time periods are processed with power-optimised, less accurate, slower versions. Real-time performance is evaluated on video datasets including i-LIDS. Compared to power-optimised static selection, automatic dynamic implementation mapping is 10% more accurate but draws 12W extra power in our testbed desktop system.

Automatic video segmentation plays a vital role in sports videos annotation. This paper presents a fully automatic and computationally efficient algorithm for analysis of sports videos. Various methods of automatic shot boundary detection have been proposed to perform automatic video segmentation. These investigations mainly concentrate on detecting fades and dissolves for fast processing of the entire video scene without providing any additional feedback on object relativity within the shots. The goal of the proposed method is to identify regions that perform certain activities in a scene. The model uses some low-level feature video processing algorithms to extract the shot boundaries from a video scene and to identify dominant colours within these boundaries. An object classification method is used for clustering the seed distributions of the dominant colours to homogeneous regions. Using a simple tracking method a classification of these regions to active or static is performed. The efficiency of the proposed framework is demonstrated over a standard video benchmark with numerous types of sport events and the experimental results show that our algorithm can be used with high accuracy for automatic annotation of active regions for sport videos.

This study describes the change of the ultraviolet spectral bands starting from 0.1 to 5.0 nm slit width in the spectral range of 200–400 nm. The analysis of the spectral bands is carried out by using the multidimensional scaling (MDS) approach to reach the latent spectral background. This approach indicates that 0.1 nm slit width gives higher-order noise together with better spectral details. Thus, 5.0 nm slit width possesses the higher peak amplitude and lower-order noise together with poor spectral details. In the above-mentioned conditions, the main problem is to find the relationship between the spectral band properties and the slit width. For this aim, the MDS tool is to used recognize the hidden information of the ultraviolet spectra of sildenafil citrate by using a ShimadzuUV–VIS 2550, which is in theworld the best double monochromator instrument. In this study, the proposed mathematical approach gives the rich findings for the efficient use of the spectrophotometer in the qualitative and quantitative studies.

In this paper, the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is applied to the spectral bands of two component mixture containing oxfendazole and oxyclozanide to provide the multicomponent quantitative prediction of the related substances. With this aim in mind, the modulus of FrFT spectral bands are processed by the continuous Mexican Hat family of wavelets, being denoted by MEXH-CWT-MOFrFT. Four modulus sets are obtained for the parameter a of the FrFT going from 0.6 up to 0.9 in order to compare their effects upon the spectral and quantitative resolutions. Four linear regression plots for each substance were obtained by measuring the MEXH-CWT-MOFrFT amplitudes in the application of the MEXH family to the modulus of the FrFT. This new combined powerful tool is validated by analyzing the artificial samples of the related drugs, and it is applied to the quality control of the commercial veterinary samples.

The goal of this study is to analyze the dynamical properties of financial data series from nineteen worldwide stock market indices (SMI) during the period 1995–2009. SMI reveal a complex behavior that can be explored since it is available a considerable volume of data. In this paper is applied the window Fourier transform and methods of fractional calculus. The results reveal classification patterns typical of fractional order systems.

One of the most well-known bio-inspired algorithms used in optimization problems is the particle swarm optimization (PSO), which basically consists on a machinelearning technique loosely inspired by birds flocking in search of food. More specifically, it consists of a number of particles that collectively move on the search space in search of the global optimum. The Darwinian particle swarm optimization (DPSO) is an evolutionary algorithm that extends the PSO using natural selection, or survival of the fittest, to enhance the ability to escape from local optima. This paper firstly presents a survey on PSO algorithms mainly focusing on the DPSO. Afterward, a method for controlling the convergence rate of the DPSO using fractional calculus (FC) concepts is proposed. The fractional-order optimization algorithm, denoted as FO-DPSO, is tested using several well-known functions, and the relationship between the fractional-order velocity and the convergence of the algorithm is observed. Moreover, experimental results show that the FO-DPSO significantly outperforms the previously presented FO-PSO.

El avance en la potencia de cómputo en nuestros días viene dado por la paralelización del procesamiento, dadas las características que disponen las nuevas arquitecturas de hardware. Utilizar convenientemente este hardware impacta en la aceleración de los algoritmos en ejecución (programas). Sin embargo, convertir de forma adecuada el algoritmo en su forma paralela es complejo, y a su vez, esta forma, es específica para cada tipo de hardware paralelo. En la actualidad los procesadores de uso general más comunes son los multicore, procesadores paralelos, también denominados Symmetric Multi-Processors (SMP). Hoy en día es difícil hallar un procesador para computadoras de escritorio que no tengan algún tipo de paralelismo del caracterizado por los SMP, siendo la tendencia de desarrollo, que cada día nos encontremos con procesadores con mayor numero de cores disponibles. Por otro lado, los dispositivos de procesamiento de video (Graphics Processor Units - GPU), a su vez, han ido desarrollando su potencia de cómputo por medio de disponer de múltiples unidades de procesamiento dentro de su composición electrónica, a tal punto que en la actualidad no es difícil encontrar placas de GPU con capacidad de 200 a 400 hilos de procesamiento paralelo. Estos procesadores son muy veloces y específicos para la tarea que fueron desarrollados, principalmente el procesamiento de video. Sin embargo, como este tipo de procesadores tiene muchos puntos en común con el procesamiento científico, estos dispositivos han ido reorientándose con el nombre de General Processing Graphics Processor Unit (GPGPU). A diferencia de los procesadores SMP señalados anteriormente, las GPGPU no son de propósito general y tienen sus complicaciones para uso general debido al límite en la cantidad de memoria que cada placa puede disponer y al tipo de procesamiento paralelo que debe realizar para poder ser productiva su utilización. Los dispositivos de lógica programable, FPGA, son dispositivos capaces de realizar grandes cantidades de operaciones en paralelo, por lo que pueden ser usados para la implementación de algoritmos específicos, aprovechando el paralelismo que estas ofrecen. Su inconveniente viene derivado de la complejidad para la programación y el testing del algoritmo instanciado en el dispositivo. Ante esta diversidad de procesadores paralelos, el objetivo de nuestro trabajo está enfocado en analizar las características especificas que cada uno de estos tienen, y su impacto en la estructura de los algoritmos para que su utilización pueda obtener rendimientos de procesamiento acordes al número de recursos utilizados y combinarlos de forma tal que su complementación sea benéfica. Específicamente, partiendo desde las características del hardware, determinar las propiedades que el algoritmo paralelo debe tener para poder ser acelerado. Las características de los algoritmos paralelos determinará a su vez cuál de estos nuevos tipos de hardware son los mas adecuados para su instanciación. En particular serán tenidos en cuenta el nivel de dependencia de datos, la necesidad de realizar sincronizaciones durante el procesamiento paralelo, el tamaño de datos a procesar y la complejidad de la programación paralela en cada tipo de hardware. Today´s advances in high-performance computing are driven by parallel processing capabilities of available hardware architectures. These architectures enable the acceleration of algorithms when thes ealgorithms are properly parallelized and exploit the specific processing power of the underneath architecture. Most current processors are targeted for general pruposes and integrate several processor cores on a single chip, resulting in what is known as a Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) unit. Nowadays even desktop computers make use of multicore processors. Meanwhile, the industry trend is to increase the number of integrated rocessor cores as technology matures. On the other hand, Graphics Processor Units (GPU), originally designed to handle only video processing, have emerged as interesting alternatives to implement algorithm acceleration. Current available GPUs are able to implement from 200 to 400 threads for parallel processing. Scientific computing can be implemented in these hardware thanks to the programability of new GPUs that have been denoted as General Processing Graphics Processor Units (GPGPU).However, GPGPU offer little memory with respect to that available for general-prupose processors; thus, the implementation of algorithms need to be addressed carefully. Finally, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are programmable devices which can implement hardware logic with low latency, high parallelism and deep pipelines. Thes devices can be used to implement specific algorithms that need to run at very high speeds. However, their programmability is harder that software approaches and debugging is typically time-consuming. In this context where several alternatives for speeding up algorithms are available, our work aims at determining the main features of thes architectures and developing the required know-how to accelerate algorithm execution on them. Due to various advantages such as flexibility, scalability and updatability, software intensive systems are increasingly embedded in everyday life. The constantly growing number of functions executed by these systems requires a high level of performance from the underlying platform. The main approach to incrementing performance has been the increase of operating frequency of a chip. However, this has led to the problem of power dissipation, which has shifted the focus of research to parallel and distributed computing. Parallel many-core platforms can provide the required level of computational power along with low power consumption. On the one hand, this enables parallel execution of highly intensive applications. With their computational power, these platforms are likely to be used in various application domains: from home use electronics (e.g., video processing) to complex critical control systems. On the other hand, the utilization of the resources has to be efficient in terms of performance and power consumption. However, the high level of on-chip integration results in the increase of the probability of various faults and creation of hotspots leading to thermal problems. Additionally, radiation, which is frequent in space but becomes an issue also at the ground level, can cause transient faults. This can eventually induce a faulty execution of applications. Therefore, it is crucial to develop methods that enable efficient as well as resilient execution of applications. The main objective of the thesis is to propose an approach to design agentbased systems for many-core platforms in a rigorous manner. When designing such a system, we explore and integrate various dynamic reconfiguration mechanisms into agents functionality. The use of these mechanisms enhances resilience of the underlying platform whilst maintaining performance at an acceptable level. The design of the system proceeds according to a formal refinement approach which allows us to ensure correct behaviour of the system with respect to postulated properties. To enable analysis of the proposed system in terms of area overhead as well as performance, we explore an approach, where the developed rigorous models are transformed into a high-level implementation language. Specifically, we investigate methods for deriving fault-free implementations from these models into, e.g., a hardware description language, namely VHDL.

The work done in this master's thesis, presents a new system for the recognition of human actions from a video sequence. The system uses, as input, a video sequence taken by a static camera. A binary segmentation method of the the video sequence is first achieved, by a learning algorithm, in order to detect and extract the different people from the background. To recognize an action, the system then exploits a set of prototypes generated from an MDS-based dimensionality reduction technique, from two different points of view in the video sequence. This dimensionality reduction technique, according to two different viewpoints, allows us to model each human action of the training base with a set of prototypes (supposed to be similar for each class) represented in a low dimensional non-linear space. The prototypes, extracted according to the two viewpoints, are fed to a $K$-NN classifier which allows us to identify the human action that takes place in the video sequence. The experiments of our model conducted on the Weizmann dataset of human actions provide interesting results compared to the other state-of-the art (and often more complicated) methods. These experiments show first the sensitivity of our model for each viewpoint and its effectiveness to recognize the different actions, with a variable but satisfactory recognition rate and also the results obtained by the fusion of these two points of view, which allows us to achieve a high performance recognition rate.

This paper presents a paralleled Two-Pass Hexagonal (TPA) algorithm constituted by Linear Hashtable Motion Estimation Algorithm (LHMEA) and Hexagonal Search (HEXBS) for motion estimation. In the TPA., Motion Vectors (MV) are generated from the first-pass LHMEA and are used as predictors for second-pass HEXBS motion estimation, which only searches a small number of Macroblocks (MBs). We introduced hashtable into video processing and completed parallel implementation. We propose and evaluate parallel implementations of the LHMEA of TPA on clusters of workstations for real time video compression. It discusses how parallel video coding on load balanced multiprocessor systems can help, especially on motion estimation. The effect of load balancing for improved performance is discussed. The performance or the algorithm is evaluated by using standard video sequences and the results are compared to current algorithms.
