This paper presents the results of a preliminary study that seeks to show how asphalt grading and air voids are related to the texture depth of asphalt. The fiftieth percentile particle size (D50) is shown to be a good predictor of texture depth measurements from a collected database of field and laboratory studies. The D50 is used to normalise collected texture data and this 'relative texture' is shown to correlate with air voids. Regression analyses confirm that air voids should be included along with a measure of gradation in the interpretation of asphalt surface texture. The derived formulae are used to develop correlation charts.

Highly oriented voids-free 3C-SiC heteroepitaxial layers are grown on φ50mm Si (100) substrates by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). The initial stage of carbonization and the surface morphology of carbonization layers of Si(100) are studied using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is shown that the optimized carbonization temperature for the growth of voids-free 3S-SiC on Si (100) substrates is 1100 ℃. The electrical properties of SiC layers are characterized using Van der Pauw method. The I-V, C-V, and the temperature dependence of I-V characteristics in n-3C-SiC-p-Si heterojunctions with AuGeNi and Al electrical pads are investigated. It is shown that the maximum reverse breakdown voltage of the n-3C-SiC-p-Si heterojunction diodes reaches to 220V at room temperature. These results indicate that the SiC/Si heterojunction diode can be used to fabricate the wide bandgap emitter SiC/Si heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT's).

Numerical modeling of a two-dimensional elastic body containing multiple voids/cracks to study the interaction between these defects can be  significantly simplified by developing special finite elements, each containing an internal circular/elliptic hole or a slit crack. These finite elements are developed using complex potentials and the conformal mapping technique. The elements developed can be divided into two categories, namely, the semi-analytic-type and hybrid-type elements. The latter element type is an improved version of the former due to the implementation of displacement continuity along the inter-element boundary. All the proposed elements can be easily combined with the conventional displacement elements, such as isoparametric elements, to analyze the above-mentioned problems without using complicated finite element meshes. Numerical examples have been employed to illustrate the modeling of voids/cracks and their interactions. The results obtained using the semi-analytic-type elements are in good agreement with the theoretical results, and the corresponding results obtained using the hybrid-type elements show an improvement of the agreement with the theoretical results. However, the former element type is much easier to construct.

Voids are one of the most significant defects found within composites and have been demonstrated to reduce the performance of composite structures. The understanding of the impact of the size and distribution of voids on laminate properties is still limited because voids have proven difficult to deliberately control. This study aims to understand the mechanisms by which voids are generated within out-of-autoclave cured laminates. In this study, a process of prepreg conditioning was developed to control the level of voids within test laminates. Non-conditioned laminates highlighted signs of void growth (1.5%), while conditioned laminates showed consistently low levels of voids (<0.3%). Mass spectrometry indicated higher levels of aqueous and solvent volatiles within the non-conditioned prepreg. Finally, Mode II fracture testing revealed a 21% improvement in toughness for the non-voided laminates. A model on the effect of voids within the Mode II stress state has also been proposed.

The master thesis for the achievement of the academic status master of science in international management (MPGI) will aim to solve the research question of how institutional voids affect the entry decision-making process of foreign venture capital firms coming to Brazil. This is a timely matter since in the past years there has been a sudden eruption of foreign VC involvement in Brazil. Based on the actionable framework by Khanna and Palpeu (2010) we conducted quantitative as well as qualitative research with two sets of interview partners in a two-phase analysis. We interviewed experts from VC firms, foreign VC firms based in Brazil and perspective VC firms that are looking to come to Brazil. We started with the former, derived lessons learned and analyzed how they affect the latter in reaching a decision. As we expected we found that depending on the industry that ventures are in, institutional voids can either pose an opportunity or a threat and hence attract or push away potential VC firms entering Brazil. Opportunities exist especially when exploiting institutional voids, for example through ventures in the marketplace efficiency. Threats are posed by investments in for instance hard infrastructure, where the economic, political and judicial systems as well as corruption and bureaucracy play demanding roles.

A major difficulty to achieve maximum weight savings in the manufacture of composite structural components, is the tendency of these materials have the formation of voids and cracks in the interior and surface components. In aeronautical applications, controlling the volume fraction of fibers, resins and empty the components of composite is very hard. In this work, composites of epoxy matrix RTM6 reinforced with NCF (non crimp fabric carbon) processed by resin transfer molding (RTM) were characterized for porosity (P-ap) and density (rho(ad)). We used a method based on Archimedes' principle (ASTM C830) and the technique of helium pycnometer. The porosity values were compared with those determined by acid digestion (ASTM D3171). The mechanical properties of processed composites was evaluated by testing on the performing flexural and the results were correlated with the porosity value. All techniques tested to determine void content are satisfactory. The differents results can be justified for heterogeneous void distribution on laminate and differences among techniques characteristics. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The presence of porosities at the dentin/adhesive interface has been observed with the use of new generation dentin bonding systems. These porosities tend to contradict the concept that etching and hybridization processes occur equally and simultaneously. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the micromechanical behavior of the hybrid layer (HL) with voids based on a self-etching adhesive system using 3-D finite element (FE) analysis. Three FE models (Mr) were built: Mr, dentin specimen (41x41x82 μm) with a regular and perfect (i.e. pore-free) HL based on a self-etching adhesive system, restored with composite resin; Mp, similar to M, but containing 25% (v/v) voids in the HL; Mpp, similar to Mr, but containing 50% (v/v) voids in the HL. A tensile load (0.03N) was applied on top of the composite resin. The stress field was obtained by using Ansys Workbench 10.0. The nodes of the base of the specimen were constrained in the x, y and z axes. The maximum principal stress (σmax) was obtained for all structures at the dentin/adhesive interface. The Mpp showed the highest peak of σmax in the HL (32.2 MPa), followed by Mp (30 MPa) and Mr (28.4 MPa). The stress concentration in the peritubular dentin was high in all models (120 MPa). All other structures positioned far from voids showed similar increase of stress. Voids incorporated into the HL raised the σmax in this region by 13.5%. This behavior might be responsible for lower bond strengths of self-etching and single-bottle adhesives, as reported in the literature.

Objective: This study compared the influence of three epoxy resin-based sealers with distinct radiopacities on the observers' ability to detect root canal filling voids during radiographic analysis. Material and methods: The root canals of 48 extracted maxillary canines were prepared and divided into three groups. Each group was laterally condensed with one sealer (AH Plus (TM), Acroseal (R) or a non-radiopaque sealer), and a longitudinal void was simulated in half of the specimens from each group (n = 8). Buccolingual radiographs were obtained and randomly interpreted for voids by a radiologist and an endodontist in a blinded fashion. Teeth were cut and inspected under a microscope to confirm the position of void. Differences in sensitivity and specificity between groups and examiners were compared using the Fisher's Exact and McNemar tests, respectively (alpha = 0.05). Results: Significantly lower sensitivity levels (p<0.05) were observed in the coronal portion of fillings performed with both radiopaque sealers. Specificity values for Acroseal (R) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the coronal and apical portions of fillings. Conclusion: The type of root canal sealer can affect the observers' ability to detect root canal filling voids during radiographic analysis of upper single-rooted teeth.

The last decade has witnessed the establishment of a Standard Cosmological Model, which is based on two fundamental assumptions: the first one is the existence of a new non relativistic kind of particles, i. e. the Dark Matter (DM) that provides the potential wells in which structures create, while the second one is presence of the Dark Energy (DE), the simplest form of which is represented by the Cosmological Constant Λ, that sources the acceleration in the expansion of our Universe. These two features are summarized by the acronym ΛCDM, which is an abbreviation used to refer to the present Standard Cosmological Model. Although the Standard Cosmological Model shows a remarkably successful agreement with most of the available observations, it presents some longstanding unsolved problems. A possible way to solve these problems is represented by the introduction of a dynamical Dark Energy, in the form of the scalar field ϕ. In the coupled DE models, the scalar field ϕ features a direct interaction with matter in different regimes. Cosmic voids are large under-dense regions in the Universe devoided of matter. Being nearby empty of matter their dynamics is supposed to be dominated by DE, to the nature of which the properties of cosmic voids should be very sensitive. This thesis work is devoted to the statistical and geometrical analysis of cosmic voids in large N-body simulations of structure formation in the context of alternative competing cosmological models. In particular we used the ZOBOV code (see ref. Neyrinck 2008), a publicly available void finder algorithm, to identify voids in the Halos catalogues extraxted from CoDECS simulations (see ref. Baldi 2012 ). The CoDECS are the largest N-body simulations to date of interacting Dark Energy (DE) models. We identify suitable criteria to produce voids catalogues with the aim of comparing the properties of these objects in interacting DE scenarios to the standard ΛCDM model, at different redshifts. This thesis work is organized as follows: in chapter 1, the Standard Cosmological Model as well as the main properties of cosmic voids are intro- duced. In chapter 2, we will present the scalar field scenario. In chapter 3 the tools, the methods and the criteria by which a voids catalogue is created are described while in chapter 4 we discuss the statistical properties of cosmic voids included in our catalogues. In chapter 5 the geometrical properties of the catalogued cosmic voids are presented by means of their stacked profiles. In chapter 6 we summarized our results and we propose further developments of this work.

When Alexander von Humboldt reached the village of Calpi in the Andes on 22 June 1802, he was greeted with reverence and enthusiasm. Triumphal arches adorned with cotton, cloth, and silver decorated his path. The natives performed a dance in festive dress. A singer praised the explorer's expedition, which had departed three years earlier from the Spanish port of La Coruña. Like Odysseus on the isle of the Phaeacians, the traveler listened to a local rhapsodist singing about his heroic deeds. Before his adventure ended, it had already spun a popular myth. This episode, which Humboldt recorded in his diary, occurred at a significant moment. One day later, the “Second Discoverer of America” rose to even greater fame on an excursion marking in more ways than one the climax of his enterprise. Humboldt set out to climb Chimborazo (6,310 m/20,702 ft.), the mountain then thought to be the highest in the world. He was accompanied by the French botanist Aimé Bonpland (1773–1858) and the Creole nobleman and future activist Carlos Montúfar (1780–1816), as well as native guides and assistants. They climbed to heights never reached before, setting a new record and catapulting Humboldt to fame on both continents.
