We study the absorption and dispersion properties of a weak probe field monitoring a two-level atom driven by a trichromatic field. We calculate the steady-state linear susceptibility and find that the system can produce a number of multilevel coherence effects predicted for atoms composed of three and more energy levels. Although the atom has only one transition channel, the multilevel effects are possible because there are multichannel transitions between dressed states induced by the driving field. In particular, we show that the system can exhibit multiple electromagnetically induced transparency and can also produce a strong amplification at the central frequency which is not attributed to population inversion in both the atomic bare states and in the dressed atomic states. Moreover, we show that the absorption and dispersion of the probe field is sensitive to the initial relative phase of the components of the driving field. In addition, we show that the group velocity of the probe field can be controlled by changing the initial relative phases or frequencies of the driving fields and can also be varied from subluminal to superluminal. The present study described about the interaction of a two level atom and squeezed field with time varying frequency. By applying a sinusoidal variation in the frequency of the field, the randomness in population inversion is reduced and the collapses and periodic revivals are regained. Quantum optics is an emerging field in physics which mainly deals with the interaction of atoms with quantised electromagnetic fields. Jaynes-Cummings Model (JCM) is a key model among them, which describes the interaction between a two level atom and a single mode radiation field. Here the study begins with a brief history of light, atom and their interactions. Also discussed the interaction between atoms and electromagnetic fields. The study suggest a method to manipulate the population inversion due to interaction and control the randomness in it, by applying a time dependence on the frequency of the interacting squeezed field. The change in behaviour of the population inversion due to the presence of a phase factor in the applied frequency variation is explained here. This study also describes the interaction between two level atom and electromagnetic field in nonlinear Kerr medium. It deals with atomic and field state evolution in a coupled cavity system. Our results suggest a new method to control and manipulate the population of states in two level atom radiation interaction, which is very essential for quantum information processing. We have also studied the variation of atomic population inversion with time, when a two level atom interacts with light field, where the light field has a sinusoidal frequency variation with a constant phase. In both coherent field and squeezed field cases, the population inversion variation is completely different from the phase zero frequency modulation case. It is observed that in the presence of a non zero phase φ, the population inversion oscillates sinusoidally. Also the collapses and revivals gradually disappears when φ increases from 0 to π/2. When φ = π/2 the evolution of population inversion is identical to the case when a two level atom interacts with a Fock state. Thus, by applying a phase shifted frequency modulation one can induce sinusoidal oscillations of atomic inversion in linear medium, those normally observed in Kerr medium. We noticed that the entanglement between the atom and field can be controlled by varying the period of the field frequency fluctuations. The system has been solved numerically and the behaviour of it for different initial conditions and different susceptibility values are analysed. It is observed that, for weak cavity coupling the effect of susceptibility is minimal. In cases of strong cavity coupling, susceptibility factor modifies the nature in which the probability oscillates with time. Effect of susceptibility on probability of states is closely related to the initial state of the system.

The atomic superradiant emission is treated in the single-particle mean-field approximation. A single-particle Hamiltonian, which represents a dressed two-level atom in a radiation field, can be obtained and it is verified that it describes the transient regime of the emission process. While the line-shape emission for a bare atom follows the sech2 law, for the dressed atom the line shape deviates appreciably from this law and it is verified that the deviation depends crucially on the ratio of the dynamic frequency shift to the transition frequency. This kind of deviation is observed in experimental results. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

We study the effect of quantum interference on the population distribution and absorptive properties of a V-type three-level atom driven by two lasers of unequal intensities and different angular frequencies. Three coupling configurations of the lasers to the atom are analysed: (a) both lasers coupled to the same atomic transition, (b) each laser coupled to different atomic transition and (c) each laser coupled to both atomic transitions. Dressed stales for the three coupling configurations are identified, and the population distribution and absorptive properties of the weaker field are interpreted in terms of transition dipole moments and transition frequencies among these dressed states. In particular, we find that in the first two cases there is no population inversion between the bare atomic states, but the population can be trapped in a superposition of the dressed states induced by quantum interference and the stronger held. We show that the trapping of the population, which results from the cancellation of transition dipole moments, does not prevent the weaker field to be coupled to the cancelled (dark) transitions. As a result, the weaker field can be strongly amplified on transparent transitions. In the case of each laser coupled to both atomic transitions the population can be trapped in a linear superposition of the excited bare atomic states leaving the ground state unpopulated in the steady state. Moreover, we find that the absorption rate of the weaker field depends on the detuning of the strong field from the atomic resonances and the splitting between the atomic excited states. When the strong held is resonant to one of the atomic transitions a quasi-trapping effect appears in one of the dressed states. In the quasi-trapping situation all the transition dipole moments are different from zero, which allows the weaker field to be amplified on the inverted transitions. When the strong field is tuned halfway between the atomic excited states, the population is completely trapped in one of the dressed states and no amplification is found for the weaker field.

The Mellow and Autler-Townes probe absorption spectra of a three-level atom in a cascade configuration with the lower transition coherently driven and also coupled to a narrow bandwidth squeezed-vacuum field are studied. Analytical studies of the modifications caused by the finite squeezed-vacuum bandwidth to the spectra are made for the case when the Rabi frequency of the driving field is much larger than the natural linewidth. The squeezed vacuum center frequency and the driving laser frequency are assumed equal. We show that the spectral features depend on the bandwidth of a squeezed vacuum field and whether the sources of the squeezing field are degenerate (DPA) or nondegenerate (NDPA) parametric amplifiers. In a broadband or narrow bandwidth squeezed vacuum generated by a NDPA, the central component of the Mellow spectrum can be significantly narrower than that in the normal vacuum. When the source of the squeezed vacuum is a DPA, the central feature is insensitive to squeezing. The Rabi sidebands, however, can be significantly narrowed only in the squeezed vacuum produced by the DPA. The two lines of the Autler-Townes absorption spectrum can be narrowed only in a narrow bandwidth squeezed vacuum, whereas they are independent of the phase and are always broadened in a broadband squeezed vacuum.

We examine subnatural phase-dependent linewidths in the fluorescence spectrum of a three-level atom damped by a narrow-bandwidth squeezed vacuum in a cavity. Using the dressed-atom model approach of a strongly driven three-level cascade system, we derive the master equation of the system from which we obtain simple analytical expressions for the fluorescence spectrum. We show that the phase effects depend on the bandwidths of the squeezed vacuum and the cavity relative to the Rabi frequency of the driving fields. When the squeezing bandwidth is much larger than the Rabi frequency, the spectrum consists of five lines with only the central and outer sidebands dependent on the phase. For a squeezing bandwidth much smaller than the Rabi frequency the number of lines in the spectrum and their phase properties depend on the frequency at which the squeezing and cavity modes are centered. When the squeezing and cavity modes are centered on the inner Rabi sidebands, the spectrum exhibits five lines that are completely independent of the squeezing phase with only the inner Rabi sidebands dependent on the squeezing correlations. Matching the squeezing and cavity modes to the outer Rabi sidebands leads to the disappearance of the inner Rabi sidebands and a strong phase dependence of the central line and the outer Rabi sidebands. We find that in this case the system behaves as an individual two-level system that reveals exactly the noise distribution in the input squeezed vacuum. [S1050-2947(97)00111-X].

Both atom localization and Raman cooling, considered in the thesis, reflect recent progress in the area of all-optical methods. We focus on twodimensional (2D) case, using a four-level tripod-type atomic scheme for atom localization within the optical half-wavelength as well as for efficient subrecoil Raman cooling. In the first part, we discuss the principles of 1D atom localization, accompanying by an example of the measurement of a spontaneously-emitted photon. Modifying this example, one archives sub-wavelength localization of a three-level -type atom, measuring the population in its upper state. We go further and obtain 2D sub-wavelength localization for a four-level tripod-type atom. The upper-state population is classified according to the spatial distribution, which in turn forms such structures as spikes, craters and waves. The second part of the thesis is devoted to Raman cooling. The cooling process is controlled by a sequence of velocity-selective transfers from one to another ground state. So far, 1D deep subrecoil cooling has been carried out with the sequence of square or Blackman pulses, applied to -type atoms. In turn, we discuss the transfer of atoms by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), which provides robustness against the pulse duration if the cooling time is not in any critical role. A tripod-type atomic scheme is used for the purpose of 2D Raman cooling, allowing one to increase the efficiency and simplify the realization of the cooling.

In this paper we detail some results advanced in a recent letter [Prado et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 073008 (2009).] showing how to engineer reservoirs for two-level systems at absolute zero by means of a time-dependent master equation leading to a nonstationary superposition equilibrium state. We also present a general recipe showing how to build nonadiabatic coherent evolutions of a fermionic system interacting with a bosonic mode and investigate the influence of thermal reservoirs at finite temperature on the fidelity of the protected superposition state. Our analytical results are supported by numerical analysis of the full Hamiltonian model.

In this Letter we extend current perspectives in engineering reservoirs by producing a time-dependent master equation leading to a nonstationary superposition equilibrium state that can be nonadiabatically controlled by the system-reservoir parameters. Working with an ion trapped inside a nonideal cavity, we first engineer effective interactions, which allow us to achieve two classes of decoherence-free evolution of superpositions of the ground and excited ionic levels: those with a time-dependent azimuthal or polar angle. As an application, we generalize the purpose of an earlier study [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 150403 (2006)], showing how to observe the geometric phases acquired by the protected nonstationary states even under nonadiabatic evolution.

The modification of the statistical properties of vacuum fluctuations, via quadrature squeezing, can dramatically reduce the absorptive and dispersive properties of two-level atoms. We show that for some range of parameter values the system exhibits zero absorption accompanied by zero dispersion of the probe field. This complete transparency is attributed to the coherent population oscillations induced by the squeezed vacuum.

We study a three-level atomic system of the vee type, but driven on only one transition by a monochromatic laser. It is shown that the gain of a probe beam, recently predicted for this system by Menon and Agarwal (Menon S and Agarwal G 2000 Phys. Rev. A 61 13 807), is due to an unexpected amplification on a completely inverted, nondecaying (dark) transition. This prediction violates the well known balance condition between the population inversion and the coupling strength of the probe field to the inverted transition, which requires that the coupling strength reduces with increasing population inversion. We show that the condition may be violated only if the probe field selectively couples to just one of the atomic transitions: when it couples to both transitions, the balance condition is satisfied and the system is transparent for the probe field coupled to the dark transitions. No amplification is possible in the latter case.

A new integrated mathematical model for the simulation of offshore wind energy conversion system performance is presented in this paper. The mathematical model considers an offshore variable-speed turbine in deep water equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator using full-power two-level converter, converting the energy of a variable frequency source in injected energy into the electric network with constant frequency, through a high voltage DC transmission submarine cable. The mathematical model for the drive train is a concentrate two mass model which incorporates the dynamic for the structure and tower due to the need to emulate the effects of the moving surface. Controller strategy considered is a proportional integral one. Also, pulse width modulation using space vector modulation supplemented with sliding mode is used for trigger the transistor of the converter. Finally, a case study is presented to access the system performance. © 2014 IEEE.

Consider a single processor and a software system. The software system comprises components and interfaces where each component has an associated interface and each component comprises a set of constrained-deadline sporadic tasks. A scheduling algorithm (called global scheduler) determines at each instant which component is active. The active component uses another scheduling algorithm (called local scheduler) to determine which task is selected for execution on the processor. The interface of a component makes certain information about a component visible to other components; the interfaces of all components are used for schedulability analysis. We address the problem of generating an interface for a component based on the tasks inside the component. We desire to (i) incur only a small loss in schedulability analysis due to the interface and (ii) ensure that the amount of space (counted in bits) of the interface is small; this is because such an interface hides as much details of the component as possible. We present an algorithm for generating such an interface.

Compositional real-time scheduling clearly requires that ”normal” real-time scheduling challenges are addressed but challenges intrinsic to compositionality must be addressed as well, in particular: (i) how should interfaces be described? and (ii) how should numerical values be assigned to parameters constituting the interfaces? The real-time systems community has traditionally used narrow interfaces for describing a component (for example, a utilization/bandwidthlike metric and the distribution of this bandwidth in time). In this paper, we introduce the concept of competitive ratio of an interface and show that typical narrow interfaces cause poor performance for scheduling constrained-deadline sporadic tasks (competitive ratio is infinite). Therefore, we explore more expressive interfaces; in particular a class called medium-wide interfaces. For this class, we propose an interface type and show how the parameters of the interface should be selected. We also prove that this interface is 8-competitive.

This paper presents a genetic algorithm for the multimode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MRCPSP), in which multiple execution modes are available for each of the activities of the project. The objective function is the minimization of the construction project completion time. To solve the problem, is applied a two-level genetic algorithm, which makes use of two separate levels and extend the parameterized schedule generation scheme by introducing an improvement procedure. It is evaluated the quality of the schedule and present detailed comparative computational results for the MRCPSP, which reveal that this approach is a competitive algorithm.
