I show that the research reported by Arieli et al. [Appl. Opt. 86, 9129 (1997)] has two serious mistakes: One is that an important factor is lost in the formula used in that study to determine the x-direction coordinate transformation; the other is the conclusion that the geometrical-transformation approach given by Arieli et al. can provide a smooth phase distribution. A potential research direction for obtaining a smooth phase distribution for a generic two-dimensional beam-shaping problem is stated. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

A lens array composed of edge-softened elements is used to improve on-target irradiation uniformity in the Shenguang II Laser Facility, with which a Fresnel pattern of suppressed diffraction peaks is obtained. Additional uniformity can be reached by reducing short-wavelength interference speckles inside the pattern when the technique of smoothing by spectral dispersion is also used. Two-dimensional performance of irradiation is simulated and the results indicate that a pattern of steeper edges and a flat top can be achieved with this joint technique. This work discusses the fabrication of two-dimensional photonic crystal mask layer patterns. Photonic crystal patterns having holes with smooth and straight sidewalls are achieved by optimizing electron beam exposure doses during electron beam lithography process. Thereafter, to precisely transfer the patterns from the beam resist to the SiO2 mask layer, we developed a pulse-time etching method and optimize various reaction ion etching conditions. Results show that we can obtain high quality two-dimensional photonic crystal mask layer patterns.

A two-dimensional mathematical model for evaluating the simultaneous heat and moisture migration in porous building materials was proposed. Vapor content and temperature were chosen as the principal driving potentials. The numerical solution was based on the control volume finite difference technique with fully implicit scheme in time. Two validation experiments were developed in this study. The evolution of transient moisture distributions in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases was measured. A comparison between experimental results and those obtained by the numerical model proves that they are fully consistent with each other. The model can be easily integrated into a whole building heat, air and moisture transfer model. Another main advantage of the present numerical method lies in the fact that the required moisture transport properties are comparatively simple and easy to determine.

A novel diffusive gradients in thin film probe developed comprises diffusive gel layer of silver iodide (AgI) and a back-up Microchelex resin gel layer. 2D high-resolution images of sulfide and trace metals were determined respectively on the AgI gel by densitometric analysis and on the Microchelex resin layer with laser-ablation-inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).We investigated the validity of the analytical procedures used for the determination of sulfide and trace metals. We found low relative standard deviations on replicate measurements, linear trace-metal calibration curves between the LA-ICP-MS signal and the true trace-metal concentration in the resin gel, and a good agreement of the sulfide results obtained with the AgI resin gel and with other analytical methods. The method was applied on anoxic sediment pore waters in an estuarine and marine system. Simultaneous remobilization of sulfide and trace metals was observed in the marine sediment.

We have investigated the dipole charge- and spin-density response of few-electron two-dimensional concentric nanorings as a function of the intensity of a erpendicularly applied magnetic field. We show that the dipole response displays signatures associated with the localization of electron states in the inner and outer ring favored by the perpendicularly applied magnetic field. Electron localization produces a more fragmented spectrum due to the appearance of additional edge excitations in the inner and outer ring.

We report on the process parameters of nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for the fabrication of two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystals. The nickel mould with 2-D photonic crystal patterns covering the area up to 20mm² is produced by electron-beam lithography (EBL) and electroplating. Periodic pillars as high as 200nm to 250nm are produced on the mould with the diameters ranging from 180nm to 400nm. The mould is employed for nanoimprinting on the poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) layer spin-coated on the silicon substrate. Periodic air holes are formed in PMMA above its glass-transition temperature and the patterns on the mould are well transferred. This nanometer-size structure provided by NIL is subjective to further pattern transfer.

Magnetic iron garnets as well as magnetic photonic crystals are of great interests in magneto-optic applications such as isolators, current captors, circulators, TE-TM mode conversion, wavelength accordable filters, optical sensors and switches, all of which provide a promising platform for future integrated optical circuits. In the present work, two topics are studied based on magnetic iron garnet films. In the first part, the characteristics of the magnetization are investigated for ridge waveguides fabricated on (100) oriented iron garnet thin films. The magnetic response in magneto-optic waveguides patterned on epitaxial magnetic garnet films depends on the crystallographic orientation of the waveguides and the magnetic anisotropy of the material. These can be studied by polarization rotation hysteresis loops, which are related to the component of magnetization parallel to the light propagation direction and the linear birefringence. Polarization rotation hysteresis loops for low birefringence waveguides with different orientations are experimentally investigated. Asymmetric stepped curves are obtained from waveguides along, due to the large magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the plane. A model based on the free energy density is developed to demonstrate the motion of the magnetization and can be used in the design of magneto-optic devices. The second part of this thesis focuses on the design and fabrication of high-Q cavities in two-dimensional magneto-photonic crystal slabs. The device consists of a layer of silicon and a layer of iron garnet thin film. Triangular lattice elliptical air holes are patterned in the slab. The fundamental TM band gap overlaps with the first-order TE band gap from 0374~0.431(a/λ) showing that both TE and TM polarization light can be confined in the photonic crystals. A nanocavity is designed to obtain both TE and TM defect modes in the band gaps. Additional work is needed to overlap the TE and TM defect modes and obtain a high-Q cavity so as to develop miniaturized Faraday rotators.

We introduce a new fiber-optical approach for reflection based refractive index mapping. Our approach leads to improved stability and reliability over existing free-space confocal instruments and significantly cuts alignment efforts and reduces the number of components needed. Other than properly cleaved fiber end-faces, this setup requires no additional sample preparation. The instrument is calibrated by means of a set of samples with known refractive indices. The index steps of commercially available fibers are measured accurately down to < 10⁻³. The precision limit of the instrument is currently of the order of 10⁻⁴.

Two-dimensional optical power distribution of the out-coupled radiation from UV-inscribed tilted fibre Bragg gratings (TFBGs) in multimode fibre (MMF) has been side-detected with high spatial/spectral resolution, showing a near-identical radiation mode profile to that measured from the fibre-end detection method. A comparative investigation of the radiation characteristics of TFBGs fabricated in singlemode fibre (SMF) and MMF clearly indicates that the radiation out-coupling is stronger and spatially more confined in MMF. The unique spatial-to-spectral encoding property of the coupling mechanism offers potential application in low-cost WDM devices.
