The soil organic partition coefficient (K-oc) is one of the most important parameters to depict the transfer and fate of a chemical in the soil-water system. Predicting K-oc by using a chromatographic technique has been developing into a convenient and low-cost method. In this paper, a soil leaching column chromatograpy (SLCC) method employing the soil column packed with reference soil GSE 17201 (obtained from Bayer Landwirtschaftszentrum, Monheim, Germany) and methanol-water eluents was developed to predict the K-oc of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs), over a log K-oc range of 4.8 orders of magnitude, from their capacity factors. The capacity factor with water as an eluent (k(w)') could be obtained by linearly extrapolating capacity factors in methanol-water eluents (k') with various volume fractions of methanol (phi). The important effects of solute activity coefficients in water on k(w)' and K-oc were illustrated. Hence, the correlation between log K-oc and log k(w)' (and log k') exists in the soil. The correlation coefficient (r) of the log K-oc vs. log k(w)' correlation for 58 apolar and polar compounds could reach 0.987, while the correlation coefficients of the log K-oc-log k' correlations were no less than 0.968, with phi ranging from 0 to 0.50. The smaller the phi, the higher the r. Therefore, it is recommended that the eluent of smaller phi, such as water, be used for accurately estimating K-oc. Correspondingly, the r value of the log K-oc-log k(w)' correlation on a reversed-phase Hypersil ODS (Thermo Hypersil, Kleinostheim, Germany) column was less than 0.940 for the same solutes. The SLCC method could provide a more reliable route to predict K-oc indirectly from a correlation with k(w)' than the reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) one.

An experimental investigation is carried out to verify the feasibility of using an instrumented vehicle to detect and monitor bridge dynamic parameters. The low-cost method consists of the use of a moving vehicle fitted with accelerometers on its axles. In the laboratory experiment, the vehicle–bridge interaction model consists of a scaled two-axle vehicle model crossing a simply supported steel beam. The bridge model also includes a scaled road surface profile. The effects of varying the vehicle model configuration and speed are investigated. A finite element beam model is calibrated using the experimental results, and a novel algorithm for the identification of global bridge stiffness is validated. Using measured vehicle accelerations as input to the algorithm, the beam stiffness is identified with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Veränderungen des Raum-Zeit-Verhaltens im Zuge von Lebensumbrüchen und ihre Anforderungen an die Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung am Beispiel des Eintritts in den Ruhestand. In der vorliegenden Dissertation wurde untersucht, ob und in welchem Maße sich das Raum-Zeit-Verhalten im Alltag mit dem Eintritt in den Ruhestand verändert. Bei der Untersuchung handelt es sich um eine mehrjährige Panel-Studie, die in den Regionen Hamburg und Kassel durchgeführt wurde. Mit insgesamt 50 Studienteilnehmern wurden vor und nach ihrem Ausscheiden aus dem Erwerbsleben umfassende Interviews geführt. Hierbei kam die an der Oxford University entwickelte „HATS“-Methode („Household Activity Travel Simulator“) zum Einsatz, die einen tiefen Einblick in die Alltagsstrukturen und das aus ihnen resultierende raum-zeitliche Verhalten ermöglicht. Ein Untersuchungsschwerpunkt lag auf der Verkehrsmittelwahl. Auf Grundlage der Untersuchungsergebnisse wurden Handlungsempfehlungen für die Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung abgeleitet. Es zeigte sich, dass die Studienteilnehmer mit ihrem Eintritt in den Ruhestand grundsätzlich deutlich später im Tagesverlauf als Verkehrsteilnehmer in Erscheinung treten. Darüber hinaus zeichnete sich ein Bedeutungszuwachs des Stadtquartiers bzw. der nahräumlichen Mobilität ab; der Fuß- und Fahrradverkehr gewinnt für die Alltagsmobilität an Bedeutung. Versorgungs- und Dienstleistungsangebote im eigenen Wohnquartier – und somit nutzungsgemischte Stadtquartiere – erweisen sich demnach insbesondere für die Gruppe der Ruheständler als besonders relevant. Trotz der steigenden Bedeutung des Fuß-und Fahrradverkehrs zeigt die Studie, dass dem Pkw in der Alltagsmobilität eine (nach wie vor) dominante Rolle zukommt – eine Entwicklung, die sich aufgrund des Kohorteneffekts eher noch verstärken wird. Im Rahmen der Diskussion geeigneter Handlungsansätze für die Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung zur Stärkung des Umweltverbundes werden – neben Interventionen zur Attraktivitätsminderung des Pkw – insbesondere verschiedene Maßnahmen zu Angebotsverbesserungen im ÖPNV behandelt. Dabei wird u. a. auch die Verhaltensrelevanz von Kostenwahrnehmungen betrachtet. Zusätzlich wird deutlich, dass bei der Etablierung verkehrsplanerischer Maßnahmen auch die zu-nehmende Bedeutung von Wegen, die in Begleitung anderer Haushaltsmitglieder zurückgelegt werden (Stichwort: Haushaltsmobilität), berücksichtigt werden muss. Der Eintritt in den Ruhestand erweist sich grundsätzlich als eine Umbruchsituation im Lebensverlauf, die ein Aufbrechen von (Verkehrs-)Gewohnheiten im Alltag begünstigt und die Betroffenen besonders empfänglich für Informationen zu verschiedenen Verkehrsangeboten bzw. Verhaltens-alternativen werden lässt. Hinsichtlich möglicher Handlungsansätze wird in dieser Studie u. a. thematisiert, wie im Rahmen einer zielgruppenspezifischen Kommunikation im ÖPNV dieses Zeit-fenster genutzt werden kann, um Menschen an der Schwelle zum Eintritt in den Ruhestand als regelmäßige Nutzer von Bus und Bahn (neu) zu gewinnen bzw. zu halten.

We show that it is possible to detect specifically adsorbed bacteriophage directly by breaking the interactions between proteins displayed on the phage coat and ligands immobilized on the surface of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). This is achieved through increasing the amplitude of oscillation of the QCM surface and sensitively detecting the acoustic emission produced when the bacteriophage detaches from the surface. There is no interference from nonspecifically adsorbed phage. The detection is quantitative over at least 5 orders of magnitude and is sensitive enough to detect as few as 20 phage. The method has potential as a sensitive and low-cost method for virus detection.

Partial shading and rapidly changing irradiance conditions significantly impact on the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. These impacts are particularly severe in tropical regions where the climatic conditions result in very large and rapid changes in irradiance. In this paper, a hybrid maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) technique for PV systems operating under partially shaded conditions witapid irradiance change is proposed. It combines a conventional MPPT and an artificial neural network (ANN)-based MPPT. A low cost method is proposed to predict the global MPP region when expensive irradiance sensors are not available or are not justifiable for cost reasons. It samples the operating point on the stairs of I–V curve and uses a combination of the measured current value at each stair to predict the global MPP region. The conventional MPPT is then used to search within the classified region to get the global MPP. The effectiveness of the proposed MPPT is demonstrated using both simulations and an experimental setup. Experimental comparisons with four existing MPPTs are performed. The results show that the proposed MPPT produces more energy than the other techniques and can effectively track the global MPP with a fast tracking speed under various shading patterns.

In 2009, the area of the Moreton Bay Marine Park was increased from 0.5 per cent of the Bay area to 16 per cent. During the planning process, opposition by commercial and recreational fishers alike was raised, arguing that loss of fishing grounds would lead to substantial loss in economic benefits. The commercial sector was compensated through a buyback of fishing effort, but the recreational sector received no compensation. In this paper, we develop a travel cost model to estimate the potential economic impact on the recreational sector from the marine park rezoning. The results suggest that, counter to initial claims, non-market recreational fishing benefits may have increased by between $1.3m and $2.5m a year, with a current total annual value of around $20m. Marine reserves are increasingly being established as a mechanism to protect marine biodiversity and sensitive habitats. As well as providing conservation benefits, marine reserves provide benefits to recreational scuba divers who dive within the reserve, as well as to recreational and commercial fishers outside the reserve through spill-over effects. To ensure benefits are being realised, management of marine reserves requires ongoing monitoring and surveillance. These are not costless, and many marine reserve managers impose an entry fee. In some countries, dive tourism is major income source to coastal industries, and a concern is that high entry fees may dissuade divers. In this paper, the price elasticity of demand for dive tourism in three countries in South East Asia – Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia – is estimated using a travel-cost model. From the model, the total non-market use value associated with diving in the area is estimated to be in the order of US$4.5 billion a year. The price elasticity of demand in the region is highly inelastic, such that increasing the cost of diving through a management levy would have little impact on total diver numbers.

The transport of live fish is a crucial step to establish fish culture in captivity, and is especially challenging for species that have not been commonly cultured before, therefore transport and handling methods need to be optimized and tailored. This study describes the use of tuna tubes for small-scale transport of medium-sized pelagic fish from the Scombridae family. Tuna tubes are an array of vertical tubes that hold the fish, while fresh seawater is pumped up the tubes and through the fish mouth and gills, providing oxygen and removing wastes. In this study, 19 fish were captured using rod and line and 42% of the captured fish were transported alive in the custom-designed tuna tubes to an on-shore holding tank: five mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis) and three leaping bonito (Cybiosarda elegans). Out of these, just three (15.8% of total fish) acclimatized to the tank's condition. Based on these results, we discuss an improved design of the tuna tubes that has the potential to increase survival rates and enable a simple and low cost method of transporting of live pelagic fish.

Motion analysis is very essential in sport activities to enhance the performance of an athlete and to ensure the correctness of regimes. Expensive methods of motion analysis involving the use of sophisticated technology has led to limited application of motion analysis in sports. Towards this, in this paper we have integrated a low-cost method for motion analysis using three axis accelerometer, three axis magnetometer and microcontroller which are very accurate and easy to use. Seventeen male subjects performed two experiments, standing short jumps and long jumps over a wide range of take-off angles. During take-off and landing the acceleration and angles at different joints of the body are recorded using accelerometers and magnetometers, and the data is captured using Lab VIEW software. Optimum take-off angle in these jumps are calculated using the recorded data, to identify the optimum projection angle that maximizes the distance achieved in a jump. The results obtained for optimum take off angle in short jump and long jump is in agreement with those obtained using other methodologies and theoretical calculations assuming jump to be a projectile motion. The impact force (acceleration) is also analysed and is found to progressively decrease from foot to neck.

A competição atualmente vivida pelas organizações tem despertado o interesse em desenvolver formas de superar a concorrência e com isso, prosperar no mercado. Uma das formas de superar a concorrência é gerir os custos de forma estratégica para que seja possível superar a concorrência. A gestão estratégica de custos tem por finalidade ampliar os horizontes da análise de custos, ou seja, ela visa cobrir as deficiências existentes nos sistemas tradicionais de custeio, pois em sua análise irá considerar a cadeia de valor como um todo e não somente os processos internos em que há agregação de valor por parte da empresa. Assim, o objetivo da presente pesquisa foi investigar as características dos sistemas de custos e como as empresas da indústria de construção naval do Estado do Rio de Janeiro estão utilizando informações de custos para dar suporte à gestão estratégica, procurando investigar aspectos relativos a esta prática; assim, tem-se como propósito verificar a aplicação da teoria no setor. Para isso, foram realizados estudos casos em cinco empresas da indústria de construção naval, as empresas estudadas, constituem uma amostra não probabilística, ou seja, amostra por acessibilidade. O estudo constatou que mesmo às empresas não utilizando o método de custeio recomendando pela literatura, é dada uma especial atenção nas transações ocorridas ao longo da cadeia de valor, o que permite gerir os custos de maneira eficiente. Isso mostra a proximidade de diversas ações tomadas pelas empresas estudadas e a literatura sobre gestão estratégica de custos

O setor de saúde pública convive com uma constante escassez de recursos combinada com uma necessidade crescente de investimentos em tecnologia e inovação. Portanto, é necessário que os gestores públicos de saúde busquem maneiras de maximizar o uso destes recursos orçamentários escassos. Uma das alternativas é implementar estudos sobre custos, que possibilitem ao gestor exercer o controle, o combate ao desperdício e o planejamento dos investimentos futuros. No entanto, na área governamental, existem outros grupos, além do gestor, que têm interesse em conhecer as informações de custos do setor de saúde. Esses grupos são chamados pela teoria da administração de Stakeholders. Cada stakeholder, tais como médicos, pacientes, fornecedores, sociedade entre outros podem demandar informações distintas de custos. Por este motivo, o objetivo deste trabalho é investigar qual o método de custeio que melhor se adequa as necessidades dos diferentes stakeholders de um hospital público. Para tanto, elaborou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica que abordasse os métodos de custeio por absorção, custeio variável e custeio baseado em atividades, que são os métodos mais debatidos pela literatura contábil. Dessa forma, com objetivo de responder a questão de pesquisa, o presente trabalho desenvolve um cenário hipotético de um hospital universitário público, no qual estão identificados os seus stakeholders e suas respectivas necessidades de informações de custo. Como resultado das análises, observa-se que cada um destes stakeholders apresenta um método de custeio, ou uma combinação de dois destes, que melhor se adequa as suas necessidades de informação de custos.
