In 1903, the eastern slope of Turtle Mountain (Alberta) was affected by a 30 M m3-rockslide named Frank Slide that resulted in more than 70 casualties. Assuming that the main discontinuity sets, including bedding, control part of the slope morphology, the structural features of Turtle Mountain were investigated using a digital elevation model (DEM). Using new landscape analysis techniques, we have identified three main joint and fault sets. These results are in agreement with those sets identified through field observations. Landscape analysis techniques, using a DEM, confirm and refine the most recent geology model of the Frank Slide. The rockslide was initiated along bedding and a fault at the base of the slope and propagated up slope by a regressive process following a surface composed of pre-existing discontinuities. The DEM analysis also permits the identification of important geological structures along the 1903 slide scar. Based on the so called Sloping Local Base Level (SLBL) an estimation was made of the present unstable volumes in the main scar delimited by the cracks, and around the south area of the scar (South Peak). The SLBL is a method permitting a geometric interpretation of the failure surface based on a DEM. Finally we propose a failure mechanism permitting the progressive failure of the rock mass that considers gentle dipping wedges (30°). The prisms or wedges defined by two discontinuity sets permit the creation of a failure surface by progressive failure. Such structures are more commonly observed in recent rockslides. This method is efficient and is recommended as a preliminary analysis prior to field investigation.

Surface- or biosynthetically labeled Lyt-2/3 antigens were isolated from cell lysates by immunoprecipitation and affinity chromatography with a monoclonal antibody. Tryptic digests of the individual subunits of 37,000, 32,000 and 28,000 apparent mol. wts were analysed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and by two-dimensional peptide mapping. The results indicate that the 37,000 and 32,000 mol. wt components are structurally very similar whereas the 28,000 mol. wt component appears as a different molecule.

Coltop3D is a software that performs structural analysis by using digital elevation model (DEM) and 3D point clouds acquired with terrestrial laser scanners. A color representation merging slope aspect and slope angle is used in order to obtain a unique code of color for each orientation of a local slope. Thus a continuous planar structure appears in a unique color. Several tools are included to create stereonets, to draw traces of discontinuities, or to compute automatically density stereonet. Examples are shown to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

Network analysis naturally relies on graph theory and, more particularly, on the use of node and edge metrics to identify the salient properties in graphs. When building visual maps of networks, these metrics are turned into useful visual cues or are used interactively to filter out parts of a graph while querying it, for instance. Over the years, analysts from different application domains have designed metrics to serve specific needs. Network science is an inherently cross-disciplinary field, which leads to the publication of metrics with similar goals; different names and descriptions of their analytics often mask the similarity between two metrics that originated in different fields. Here, we study a set of graph metrics and compare their relative values and behaviors in an effort to survey their potential contributions to the spatial analysis of networks.

To study the interaction of the TCR with its ligand, the complex of a MHC molecule and an antigenic peptide, we modified a TCR contact residue of a H-2Kd-restricted antigenic peptide with photoreactive 4-azidobenzoic acid. The photoreactive group was a critical component of the epitope recognized by CTL clones derived from mice immunized with such a peptide derivative. The majority of these clones expressed V beta 1-encoded beta chains that were paired with J alpha TA28-encoded alpha chains. For one of these TCR, the photoaffinity labeled sites were mapped on the alpha chain as a J alpha TA28-encoded tryptophan and on the beta chain as a residue of the C' strand of V beta 1. Molecular modeling of this TCR suggested the presence of a hydrophobic pocket that harbors this tryptophan as well as a tyrosine on the C' strand of V beta 1 between which the photoreactive side chain inserts. It is concluded that this avid binding principle may account for the preferential selection of V beta 1 and J alpha TA28-encoded TCR.

Richer and healthier agents tend to hold riskier portfolios and spend proportionally less on health expenditures. Potential explanations include health and wealth effects on preferences, expected longevity or disposable total wealth. Using HRS data, we perform a structural estimation of a dynamic model of consumption, portfolio and health expenditure choices with recursive utility, as well as health-dependent income and mortality risk. Our estimates of the deep parameters highlight the importance of health capital, mortality risk control, convex health and mortality adjustment costs and binding liquidity constraints to rationalize the stylized facts. They also provide new perspectives on expected longevity and on the values of life and health.

This paper investigates what has caused output and inflation volatility to fall in the USusing a small scale structural model using Bayesian techniques and rolling samples. Thereare instabilities in the posterior of the parameters describing the private sector, the policyrule and the standard deviation of the shocks. Results are robust to the specification ofthe policy rule. Changes in the parameters describing the private sector are the largest,but those of the policy rule and the covariance matrix of the shocks explain the changes most.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) received a Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) gyratory compactor in December 1994. Since then IDOT has been studying the ability of the compactor to analyze fundamental properties of aggregates such as shape, texture, and gradation by studying the volumetrics of the aggregate blends under a standard load using the SHRP gyratory compactor. This method of analyzing the volumetrics of aggregate blends is similar to SHRP's fine aggregate angularity procedure, which analyzes void levels in noncompacted aggregate blends, which in turn can be used to evaluate the texture or shape of aggregates, what SHRP refers to as angularity. Research is showing that by splitting the aggregate blend on the 2.36-mm (#8) sieve and analyzing the volumetrics or angularity of the separated blend, important fundamental properties can be determined. Most important is structure (the degree and location of aggregate interlock). In addition, analysis of the volumes of the coarse and fine portions can predict the voids in the mineral aggregate and the desired asphalt content. By predicting these properties, it can be determined whether the combined aggregate blend, when mixed with asphalt cement, will produce a mix with structural adequacy to carry the designed traffic load.

In recent years the Iowa DOT has shifted emphasis from the construction of new roads to the maintenance and preservation of existing highways. A need has developed for analyzing pavements structurally to select the correct rehabilitation strategy and to properly design a pavement overlay if necessary. This need has been fulfilled by Road Rater testing which has been used successfully on all types of pavements to evaluate pavement and subgrade conditions and to design asphaltic concrete overlays. The Iowa Road Rater Design Method has been simplified so that it may be easily understood and used by the widely diverse groups of individuals which may be involved in pavement restoration and management. Road Rater analysis techniques have worked well to date and have been verified by pavement coring, soils sampling and testing, and pavement removal by block sampling. Void detection testing has also been performed experimentally in Iowa, and results indicate that the Road Rater can be used to locate pavement voids and that Road Rater analysis techniques are reasonably accurate. The success of Road Rater research and development has made deflection test data one of the most important pavement management inputs.

Large slope failures in fractured rocks are often controlled by the combination of pre-existing tectonic fracturing and brittle failure propagation in the intact rock mass during the pre-failure phase. This study focuses on the influence of fold-related fractures and of post-folding fractures on slope instabilities with emphasis on Turtle Mountain, located in SW Alberta (Canada). The structural features of Turtle Mountain, especially to the south of the 1903 Frank Slide, were investigated using a high-resolution digital elevation model combined with a detailed field survey. These investigations allowed the identification of six main discontinuity sets influencing the slope instability and surface morphology. According to the different deformation phases affecting the area, the potential origin of the detected fractures was assessed. Three discontinuity sets are correlated with the folding phase and the others with post-folding movements. In order to characterize the rock mass quality in the different portions of the Turtle Mountain anticline, the geological strength index (GSI) has been estimated. The GSI results show a decrease in rock mass quality approaching the fold hinge area due to higher fracture persistence and higher weathering. These observations allow us to propose a model for the potential failure mechanisms related to fold structures.

Between the cities of Domodossola and Locarno, the complex ``Centovalli Line'' tectonic zone of the Central Alps outlines deformation phases over a long period of time (probably starting similar to 30 Ma ago) and under variable P-T conditions. The last deformation phases developed gouge-bearing faults with a general E-W trend that crosscuts the roots of the Alpine Canavese zone and the Finero ultramafic body. Kinematic indicators show that the general motion was mainly dextral associated with back thrusting towards the S. The <2 mu m clay fractions of fault gouges from Centovalli Line consist mainly of illite, smectite and chlorite with varied illite-smectite, chlorite-smectite and chlorite-serpentine mixed-layers. Constrained with the illite crystallinity index, the thermal conditions induced by the tectonic activity show a gradual trend from anchizonal to diagenetic conditions. The <2 and <0.2 mu M clay fractions, and hydrothermal K-feldspar separates all provide K-Ar ages between 14.2 +/- 2.9 Ma and roughly 0 Ma, with major episodes at about 12,8, 6 and close to 0 Ma These ages set the recurrent tectonic activity and the associated fluid circulations between Upper Miocene and Recent. On the basis of the K-Ar ages and with a thermal gradient of 25-30 degrees C/km, the studied fault zones were located at a depth of 4-7 km. If they were active until now as observed in field, the exhumation was approximately 2.5-3.0 km for the last 12 Ma with a mean velocity of 0.4 mm/y. Comparison with available models on the recent Alpine evolution shows that the tectonic activity in the area relates to a continuum of the back-thrusting movements of the Canavese Line, and/or to several late-extensional phases of the Rhone-Simplon line. The Centovalli-Val Vigezzo zone therefore represents a major tectonic zone of the Central-Western Alps resulting from different interacting tectonic events. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize oligonucleotide-polyethylenimine (ODN/PEI) complex preparation for potential transfection of retinal cells in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: The effect of medium preparation [HEPES-buffered saline (HBS), water] on particle size and morphology was evaluated. Cultured Lewis rat retinal Müller glial (RMG) cells were transfected using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-ODN/PEI complexes specifically directed at transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta)-2. Efficacy of transfection was evaluated using confocal microscopy, and regulation of gene expression was assayed using quantitative real-time RT-PCR and ELISA assay. One, 24, and 72 h after injection of FITC-ODN/PEI complexes into the vitreous of rat eyes, their distribution was analyzed on eye sections. RESULTS: Complexes prepared in HBS were smaller than complexes prepared in pure water and presented a core-shell structure. These particles showed a high cellular internalization efficacy, along with a significant and specific down-regulation of TGFbeta-2 expression and production in RMG cells, correlating with specific inhibition of cell growth at 72 h. In vivo, complexes efficiently transfect retinal cells and follow a transretinal migration at 24 h. After 72 h, ODN seems to preferentially target RMG cells without inducing any detectable toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: Specific down-regulation of TGFbeta-2 expression using ODN/PEI complexes may have potential interest for the treatment of retinal diseases associated with glial proliferation.

A frequency-domain method for nonlinear analysis of structural systems with viscous, hysteretic, nonproportional and frequency-dependent damping is presented. The nonlinear effects and nonproportional damping are considered through pseudo-force terms. The modal coordinates uncoupled equations are iteratively solved. The treatment of initial conditions in the frequency domain which is necessary for the treatment of the uncoupled equations is initially adressed.
