"No Encores" The Royal Dublin Society Concert Archive Recitals in Retrospect: 1925-50

A large archive of sources for the RDS classical music recitals is extant in the Society’s Library, Ballsbridge, Dublin. The recitals were established in 1886 for the promotion of chamber music and in order to expose Dublin audiences to the works of the great composers. Extant in the collection are minute books; autographed programmes; newspaper cuttings which include previews, reviews and advertisements; correspondences with artists and agents; promotional material; selections of photographs; records of attendance, artists fees and takings; and volumes of printed music.
This paper will document the organisation, management and occurrence of the RDS classical music recitals for the period 1925 to 1950 and will encompass the opening of the current concert hall (The Members’ Hall, 1925), the Society’s bi-centenary celebrations (1931) and the continuance of the recitals within the context of the Second World War (1939- 45). The paper will examine and analyse the following: networks, repertoire and reception.
The RDS music committee established significant links with many performers and UK-based classical music agents. Recitalists include musicians of international renown; Myra Hess, Isolde Menges, Lili Kraus, Joseph Szigeti, Leon Goossens, Sir Hamilton Harty and The Hallé Orchestra, The Catterall Quartet and many local, Dublin-based musicians; Raidió Éireann Orchestra, Dublin String Orchestra, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra and Culwick Choral Society. The compromises and collaborations in evidence between the music committee, agents and performers resulted in the presentation of varied and well-balanced programmes featuring sonatas, quartets, trios, concerti, overtures, symphonies and songs by composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Brahms. Works by contemporary composers including Bax, Dohnanyi, Szymanowski and Suk were also regularly performed, as were works with an Irish influence or flavour. Audiences mainly consisted of members of the Society, music students were encouraged to attend at a reduced rate and reviews were regularly published in the Irish Times, Irish Independent and Irish Press.

Australia Telescope Compact Array H I observations of the NGC 6845 galaxy group

We present the results of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) H i line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the galaxy quartet NGC 6845. The H i emission extends over all four galaxies but can only be associated clearly with the two spiral galaxies, NGC 6845A and B, which show signs of strong tidal interaction. We derive a total H i mass of at least 1.8 x 10(10) M-., most of which is associated with NGC 6845A, the largest galaxy of the group. We investigate the tidal interaction between NGC 6845A and B by studying the kinematics of distinct H i components and their relation to the known H ii regions. No H i emission is detected from the two lenticular galaxies, NGC 6845C and D. A previously uncatalogued dwarf galaxy, ATCA J2001-4659, was detected 4.4 arcmin NE from NGC 6845B and has an H i mass of similar to5 x 10(8) M-.. No H i bridge is visible between the group and its newly detected companion. Extended 20-cm radio continuum emission is detected in NGC 6845A and B as well as in the tidal bridge between the two galaxies. We derive star formation rates of 15-40 M-. yr(-1).

Aptamer-based label-free method for hemin recognition and DNA assay by capillary electrophoresis with chemiluminescence detection

An aptamer-based label-free approach to hemin recognition and DNA assay using capillary electrophoresis with chemiluminescence detection is introduced here. Two guanine-rich DNA aptamers were used as the recognition element and target DNA, respectively. In the presence of potassium ions, the two aptamers folded into the G-quartet structures, binding hemin with high specificity and affinity. Based on the G-quartet-hemin interactions, the ligand molecule was specifically recognized with a K (d)approximate to 73 nM, and the target DNA could be detected at 0.1 mu M. In phosphate buffer of pH 11.0, hemin catalyzed the H2O2-mediated oxidation of luminol to generate strong chemiluminescence signal; thus the target molecule itself served as an indicator for the molecule-aptamer interaction, which made the labeling and/or modification of aptamers or target molecules unnecessary. This label-free method for molecular recognition and DNA detection is therefore simple, easy, and effective.

A time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy study of paramagnetic porphyrins /

There is considerable interest in intramolecular energy transfer, especially in complexes which absorb visible light, because it is crucial to the better understanding of photoharvesting systems in photosynthetic organisms and for utilizing solar energy as well. Porphyrin dimers represent one of the best systems for the exploration of light-induced intramolecular energy transfer. Many kinds of porphyrins and porphyrin dimers have been studied over the past decade, however little attention has been paid to the influence of paramagnetic metals on the behavior of their excited states. In this thesis, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPR) is used to study such compounds. After light irradiation, porphyrins easily produce a variety of excited states, which are spin polarized and can be detected by the time-resolved (TR) EPR technique. The spin polarized results for vanadyl porphyrins, their electrostatically-coupled dimers, a covalently-linked copper porphyrin-free base porphyrin dimer, and free base porphyrins are presented in this thesis. From these results we can conclude that the spin polarization patterns of vanadyl porphyrins come primarily from the trip-quartet state generated by intersystem crossing (lSC) from the excited sing-doublet state through the trip-doublet state. The spin polarization pattern of electrostatically-coupled vanadyl porphyrin-free base porphyrin dimer is produced by the triplet state of the free base porphyrin half which is coupled to the unpaired electron on the vanadyl ion.

Epidemiology of metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS), also previously known by a variety of other names, including insulin resistance syndrome and the deadly quartet, is characterized by clustering of abdominal (visceral and retroperitoneal) obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors, including impaired glucose regulation, raised triglycerides, decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), elevated blood pressure (BP).

Associated with increased risk of both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), MetS is believed to be a contributor to the modern-day epidemics of diabetes and CVD and has become a major public health challenge around the world [I]. Currently, there are five different sets of criteria which have been developed to characterize the syndrome. These definitions differ in the components included and the cut-points used for each component. The prevalence of MetS in the westernized world is significant (10-50%) and believed to be increasing over time. The pathophysiology of the syndrome is unclear, but it is thought that obesity and/or insulin resistance are key underlying components. Genetics, lifestyle and environment factors are also important causes of MetS.

This chapter provides:

• a historical overview of the evolution of MetS;
• a summary of the value of the different definitions used to characterize the syndrome;
• a summary of the underlying pathophysiology, the causes and other important risk factors of MetS;
• a summary of the evidence describing the association of MetS with CVD and diabetes;
• a summary of the prevalence of MetS using the various definitions in different countries.

Opportunities to promote mathematical content knowledge for primary teaching

Understanding the development of pre-service teachers’ mathematical content knowledge (MCK) is important for improving primary mathematics’ teacher education. This paper reports on a case study, Rose , and her opportunities to develop MCK during the four years of her program. Program opportunities to promote MCK when planning and practicing primary teaching included: coursework experiences and responding to assessment requirements. Discussion includes the Knowledge Quartet: foundation knowledge, transformation, connection and contingency. By fourth-year, Rose demonstrated development of different categories of MCK when practicing her teaching because of her program experiences.

Introduction: queering regionality

To 'address' the region of the sexual is not to effortlessly attend to its boundary, but instead to address an epistle that may or may not reach its destination. At what address might the edge of sexuality be situated? And what response might be received from that address? The outstanding quartet of papers in this special issue of Transformations are written to address that limit, in four different constitutive contexts.

Markierung der Zellinien im Embryo von Platynereis

Die Zellgenealogie des Polychaeten Platynereis dumerilii wurde durch Farbstoffinjektion in die Blastomeren des 2-, 4- und 8-Zellstadiums, sowie die Zellen 2d, 2d112, 4d und 4d1 untersucht. Injektionen gelangen durch Aufweichung der Vitellinhülle mittels Dithioerythritol und Trypsin. Die injizierten Keime wurden zur Trochophora bzw zum dreisegmentigen Jungwurm aufgezogen, fixiert und mit dem konfokalen Rasterlichtmikroskop dreidimensional aufgenommen. Die animal-vegetale Achse des Frühkeims entspricht der antero-posterioren Achse des Jungwurms. Die Mikromeren des ersten Quartetts sind radiär um die antero-posteriore Achse angeordnet und bilden den Kopf. Die Mikromere 2d proliferiert bilateralsymmetrisch von der dorsalen Mittellinie aus und liefert das gesamte Rumpfektoderm. Indirekt ließ sich ableiten, daß die Mikromeren 2a1 bis 2c1 schmale ektodermale Streifen zwischen Kopf und Rumpf bilden und aus 2a2 und 2c2 das ektodermale Stomodaeum hervorgeht. Die Mikromeren des dritten Quartetts sowie möglicherweise 2b2 bilden 'Ektomesoderm'. 4d proliferiert ebenfalls bilateralsymmetrisch von der dorsalen Mittellinie aus zum Rumpfmesoderm und liefert vielleicht noch kleine Beiträge zum Aufbau des Darmes. Der Mitteldarm stammt von den dotterreichen Makromeren 4A bis 4D.

Interhemispheric connections shape subjective experience of bistable motion

The right and left visual hemifields are represented in different cerebral hemispheres and are bound together by connections through the corpus callosum. Much has been learned on the functions of these connections from split-brain patients [1-4], but little is known about their contribution to conscious visual perception in healthy humans. We used diffusion tensor imaging and functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate which callosal connections contribute to the subjective experience of a visual motion stimulus that requires interhemispheric integration. The "motion quartet" is an ambiguous version of apparent motion that leads to perceptions of either horizontal or vertical motion [5]. Interestingly, observers are more likely to perceive vertical than horizontal motion when the stimulus is presented centrally in the visual field [6]. This asymmetry has been attributed to the fact that, with central fixation, perception of horizontal motion requires integration across hemispheres whereas perception of vertical motion requires only intrahemispheric processing [7]. We are able to show that the microstructure of individually tracked callosal segments connecting motion-sensitive areas of the human MT/V5 complex (hMT/V5+; [8]) can predict the conscious perception of observers. Neither connections between primary visual cortex (V1) nor other surrounding callosal regions exhibit a similar relationship.

O MOVIMENTO DIRETAS JÁ PELA ÓTICA DE JANIO DE FREITAS NA FOLHA DE S.PAULO

O presente trabalho verificou como o jornalismo pode ser parceiro e fonte para a história por meio da reprodução e análise dos fatos político-econômicos brasileiros nas páginas dos jornais impressos diários. Nessa perspectiva, as colunas escritas nos últimos 25 anos (1983-2009) por Janio de Freitas, no jornal Folha de S.Paulo, significam interpretação e análise dessa história. Trata-se, portanto, de uma pesquisa qualitativa e está ancorada nos Estudos Culturais. O corpus desta pesquisa é composto de um recorte de 47 comentários sobre as Diretas Já , de janeiro até abril de 1984, período em que ocorreram as principais mobilizações da sociedade civil pela eleição direta para a Presidência da República e culminou com a votação e a rejeição da emenda Dante de Oliveira pelo Congresso Nacional. No desenvolvimento do trabalho foram utilizadas as ferramentas da Análise de Conteúdo a partir das categorias analíticas criadas Personagens, Votação da Emenda Dante de Oliveira e Movimento Diretas Já nas ruas , para descrever o conteúdo textual das colunas. Para que se pudesse efetuar uma análise aprofundada do corpus da pesquisa foi utilizado o referencial teórico da ACD Análise Crítica do Discurso em nove das 47 colunas selecionadas. O critério de escolha para essas colunas foi a identificação daquelas que no título já traziam uma referência explícita à Campanha pelas Diretas Já , Às mobilizações nas ruas , A votação da emenda Dante de Oliveira , Ao processo de sucessão presidencial ou as que tinham o seu conteúdo integral sobre um dos temas. Este estudo constata a hipótese de que o jornalista é um historiador do cotidiano e que é possível fazer uma leitura da história da Campanha das Diretas Já por meio das colunas de Janio de Freitas. Ao tecer em suas colunas o cenário da época, desnuda para a história e para os historiadores o xadrez político personagens, acordos políticos, votação da emenda e a campanha nas ruas que envolveu o processo. Dessa forma, a partir de suas lentes, oferece elementos para a construção da memória coletiva sobre esse período da história brasileira.(AU)
