Several substituted anilines were converted to binary salts with L-tartaric acid. Second harmonic generation (SHG) activities of these salts were determined. The crystal packing in two structures, (i) m-anisidinium-L-tartrate monohydrate (i) and (ii) p-toluidinium-L-tartrate (2), studied using X-ray diffraction demonstrates that extensive hydrogen bonding steers the components into a framework which has a direct bearing on the SHG activity

Crystal structures of the active-site mutants D99A and H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E of bovine phospholipase A(2) have been determined at around 1.9 Angstrom resolution. The D99A mutant is isomorphous to the orthorhombic recombinant enzyme, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), The H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E are isomorphous to the trigonal recombinant enzyme, space group P3(1)21, The two active-site mutants show no major structural perturbations. The structural water is absent in D99A and, therefore, the hydrogen-bonding scheme is changed. In H48Q, the catalytic water is present and hydrogen bonded to Gln48 N, but the second water found in native His48 is absent. In the calcium-loop mutant D49E, the two water molecules forming the pentagonal bipyramid around calcium are absent and only one O atom of the Glu49 carboxylate group is coordinated to calcium, resulting in only four ligands.

Fishing communities that have exploited the resource for generations constitute the main stakeholder groups in the fisheries of Lake Victoria. Several studies have examined Uganda's Lake Victoria fishing communities and characterised key stakeholders at community level over the last decade (SEDAWOG 1999a and b; Geheb 1997; FeSEP 1997; Kitakule 1991). The communities are made up of scattered settlements at the shores and on islands. The categories of people living in these communities include fishers who consist primarily of large numbers of male youths who provide labour to boat and gear owners. There are resident and non-resident fish traders who after securing their supplies at the beaches, depart for their market destinations. In addition, there are fish processors, mostly operating traditional and improved smoking kilns. Many other people, dealing in provisions and supplies also stay at the beaches, their activities depending on the level of fish catch. The fishing communities of Lake Victoria, Uganda, include auxiliary livelihood activities such as boat building, net repairing and transportation; bait supply and beachside kiosks, video halls and retail shop business. Other economic activities are brick making, charcoal burning/wood trade, farming and livestock keeping.

In the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory, the valence energy subbands and optical transitions of the InAs/GaAs quantum ring are calculated by using a four-band valence band model. Our model can be used to calculate the hole states of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. The effect of finite offset and valence band mixing are taken into account. The energy levels of the hole are calculated in the different shapes of rings. Our calculations show that the effect of the difference between effective masses of holes in different materials on the valence subband structures is significant. Our theoretical results are consistent with the conclusion of the recent experimental measurements and should be useful for researching and making low-dimensional semiconductor optoelectronic devices. The geometrical parameters and electronic structures of C60, (A partial derivative C60) (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and (H partial derivative C60) (H = F, Cl, Br, I) have been calculated by the EHMO/ASED (atom superposition and electron delocalization) method. When putting a central atom into the C60 cage, the frontier and subfrontier orbitals of (A partial derivative C60) (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and (H partial derivative C60) (H = F, Cl) relative to those of C60 undergo little change and thus, from the viewpoint of charge transfer, A (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and H (H = F, Cl) are simply electron donors and acceptors for the C60 cage resPeCtively. Br is an electron acceptor but it does influence the frontier and subfrontier MOs for the C60 cage, and although there is no charge transfer between I and the C60 cage, the frontier and subfrontier MOs for the C60 cage are obviously influenced by I. The stabilities DELTAE(X) (DELTAE(X) = (E(X) + E(C60)) - E(x partial derivative C60)) follow the sequence I < Br < None < Cl < F < Li < Na < K < Rb < Cs while the cage radii r follow the inverse sequence. The stability order and the cage radii order have been explained by means of the (exp-6-1) potential.

The electronic and magnetic structures of Nd2Fe17 and Nd2Fe17N3 have been calculated using the first-principle, spin-polarized orthogonalized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Comparative studies of the two materials reveal important effects of the nitrogen atoms (at 9e site) on the electronic and magnetic structures. Results are presented for the total density of states, site-projected partial density of states and the spin magnetic moments on four nonequivalent Fe sites. The highest magnetic moments are found to be located on the 6c site for Nd2Fe17 and on the 9d site for Nd2Fe17N3, in agreement with the neutron and Mossbauer experiments. The variation trends of the magnetic moments on different Fe sites are discussed in terms of the separation between Fe and N atoms. Compared with Nd2Fe17, an increase in the exchange splitting of the Fe d band is found in Nd2Fe17N3, which accounts for its higher Curie temperature as observed in experiments. The calculated results show that the nitrogen atoms are charge acceptors in these compounds.

The electronic structures of the zinc-blende GaN/Ga0.85Al0.15N compressively strained superlattices and quantum wells are investigated using a 6 x 6 Hamiltonian model (including the heavy hole, light hole and spin-orbit splitting band). The energy bands, wavefunctions and optical transition matrix elements are calculated. It is found that the light hole couples with the spin-orbit splitting state even at the k=0 point, resulting in the hybrid states. The heavy hole remains a pure heavy hole state at k=0. The optical transitions from the hybrid valence states to the conduction states are determined by the transitions of the light hole and spin-orbit splitting states to the conduction states. The transitions from the heavy hole, light hole and spin-orbit splitting states to the conduction states obey the selection rule Delta n=0. The band structures obtained in this work will be valuable in designing GaN/GaAlN based optoelectronic devices. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited

The structural parameters of the aggregated state of polyamide (PA)-1010 annealed at various temperatures were computed by means of the desmearing intensity from Smalt Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) measurements and by using the concept of the distance distribution function. The results indicated that the structural parameters of the aggregated state were strongly dependent upon heat treatment conditions and the maximum values of the structural parameters were obtained for the samples annealed at T = 175 degrees C. The particle size Z annealed at different temperature was ranged between 8.1-12.8nm, and the values of the distance distribution function P-max(Z) were obtained when Z = 4.0-6.8 nm. Using one dimension electron density correlation function (1D EDCF) method long period (L) and thickness of the lamellar (d(0)) were estimated and were found to increase with the increase of the degree of crystallinity.

An X-ray crystal structure analysis of the complex of beta-methyloxycarbonylethyltin trichloride and N-4-methylphenyl-2-hydroxyacetophenylideneimine has been performed, The crystal belongs to space group , The cell parameters are: a = 1.0201(6) nm, b = 1.082 2(4) nm, c = 1.394 9(6) nm, alpha = 99.88(3)degrees, beta = 98.63(4)degrees, gamma = 97.86(4)degrees, Z = 2, The ligands coordinate to tin atom via phenolic oxygen atom. Coordination of carbonyl oxygen atom to tin atom still exists in the complexes, The coordination number of tin atom is 6.

The results revealed that the maximum values of Q, I(0), P-max(Z), dtr, Rg and W-c,W-x were obtained nearby T=175 degreesC for PA-1010 samples with various annealing treatment. The higher degree of the crystallinity, the greater values of all the structural parameters of the aggregated state for PA-1010 samples were.
