Platonic allusion in Plutarch's Alcibiades 4-7

Plutarch deals with Socrates' relationship with Alcibiades in chs. 4-7 of his Life. He draws heavily here on two Platonic works, the First Alcibiades and the Symposium, but engagement with the Platonic texts is denser and more profound in Alcibiades than a study of just those two texts would suggest. In fact, this part of the Alcibiades contains allusions to several other Platonic texts in which Alcibiades does not occur as a character and in which his name is not mentioned: Republic Books 6 and 8, Charmides, Phaedrus, Apology, and Lysis. These texts function as ‘intertexts’ against which the Alcibiades is to be read.

Socratic teaching, the law and professional identity

This paper uses critical discourse analysis of interactions between law students and their lecturer to show how ‘Socratic’ teaching is used as a powerful technique to shape student identities. Data from a moot or simulated court in taxation law is analysed to show how students position themselves and are positioned as legal professionals. The paper argues that one student’s poor performance in the moot can be interpreted as resistance to attempts to influence her to adopt an uncongenial speaking position. This example supports the view that the difficulty law students have in learning to ‘think like a lawyer’ results not from a failure of skill but from the problems they have in assuming the speaking position of a legal professional. It is suggested that educators should consider helping students come to terms with the fragmented and contradictory subject positions associated with professionalisation.

Publicising the Essentially Private: On Leo Strauss' Platonic Aristophanes

This paper is a reading of Strauss' work on Aristophanes, arguing that for him, the comic poet was an esoteric friend to philosophy, conceived (albeit in a manner that invites further reflection) as the attempt to understand nature, including human nature.

A contribution to the history of assessment: how a conversation simulator redeems Socratic method

Assessment in education is a recent phenomenon. Although there were counterparts in former epochs, the term assessment only began to be spoken about in education after the Second World War; and, since that time, views, strategies and concerns over assessment have proliferated according to an uncomfortable dynamic. We fear that, increasingly, education is assessment-led rather than learning-led and ‘counter to what is desired’ in an ugly judgemental spirit whose moral underpinnings deserve scrutiny. In this article, we seek to historicise assessment and the anxieties of credentialising students. Through this longer history, we present a philosophy of assessment which underlies the development of a new method in assessment-as-learning. We hope that our development of a conversation simulator helps restore the innocence of education as learning-led, while still delivering on the incumbencies of assessment.

Por uma ética em profissão: rumo a uma nova paideia

O presente artigo procura discutir a atualidade do conceito de paideia, à luz do entrelaçamento entre o original referente grego e a categoria operatória do que aqui nomeamos uma ética em profissão. Trata-se de um estudo que busca formular algumas diretrizes para se pensar o tema do ensino e do aprendizado, metodologicamente partindo da acepção de interdisciplinaridade. Assim, poder-se-á, fugindo das fragmentárias especializações do campo, recompor a arte do pensamento pedagógico, incluindo nela seus essenciais aspectos éticos. Desse modo, supomos possível estabelecer para professores e estudantes contemporâneos desse terceiro milênio uma nova e moderna paideia.

Ulisses e Narciso: as faces da alma humana através do discurso mítico nas Enéadas de Plotino

This dissertation, witch studies the myth in Plotinus, attempts to set an approach to the comprehension of the mythic discourse as image related to the ethical process in the Enneads. In order to achieve it, the analysis of the mythic narrative will be employed in the philosophical context that has as a starting point a revisit of the platonic poetic conception. As central questions the notable mythological figures of Narcissus and Ulysses will be utilized to put into context the notion of the Plotinian soul and its endeavor of returning to the originary unity. Therefore, by following the course of both figures in their respective narratives, it conceives a possible relation of ascension and fall of the soul. The first part of this study intends to show Plato s interpretation on the myth and Plotinus standpoint in regard to it. Moreover, it observes Plato s criticism on poetry in the context of the Greek Paideia and the notion of the myth as image of the henological structure in Plotinus, who perceives in the myth its exemplifying nature. The second part attempts to structure Plotinus philosophy, contrasting Henology and Ontology, therefore exposing the three hypostases and the comprehension of the intelligible. The third part endeavors to display the sense of the myth, the idea of the myth as image in Plotinus and the roles of the mythical figures in the Enneads
