Effects of bone remodelling on calcium mass transfer during haemodialysis

Background. During haemodialysis, calcium balance can affect, or be affected by, mineral metabolism. However, when dialysate calcium concentration (d[Ca]) is chosen or kinetic models are employed to calculate calcium balance, bone remodelling is rarely considered. In this study, we examined whether bone remodelling affects calcium mass transfer during haemodialysis. Methods. We dialysed 23 patients using a d[Ca] of 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 or 1.75 mmol/L. Calcium mass transfer was measured and associated with remodelling bone factors. Results. Calcium balance varied widely depending on the d[Ca]. Calcium removal was -578 +/- 389, -468 +/- 563, +46 +/- 400 and +405 +/- 413 mg when a d[Ca] of 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 or 1.75 mmol/L was used, respectively (1.0 and 1.25 VS 1.5 and 1.75 mmol/L, P<0.001; 1.5 vs 1.75 mmol/L, P<0.05). Univariate analysis showed that calcium balance correlated with calcium gradient, parathyroid hormone (PTH), osteocalcin and dialysis vintage. Multivariate analysis revealed that calcium balance was dependent on calcium gradient, PTH and osteocalcin. Conclusions. These results suggest that bone remodelling could affect calcium mass transfer during haemodialysis.

Un par de pasajes ciceronianos en Lucifer de Cálaris

The text of Lucifer Calaritanus' Moriundurn esse shows numerous quotations borrowed from other christian writers, specially Luctance, the anonymous De laude martyrii and Cyprian. The author adapts and orderly inserts those texts in his writing without indicating its source. Some passages borrowed from Cicero's Catil. IV 18 and 20 allow to increase the scarse number of secular quotations indicated in this writing and ut same time they prove that here Lucifer also follows the orderly method of quotation auulied to the christian writers.

Effect of thyroparathyroidectomy on urinary acidification in diabetic rats

In previous studies we have shown stimulation of renal acid excretion in the proximal tubules of rats with diabetes of short duration, with no important alterations in glomerular hemodynamics; on the other hand, in thyroparathyroidectomized rats (TPTX model), a significant decrease in renal acid excretion, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF) was detected. Since important changes in the parathyroid hormone-vitamin D-Ca axis are observed in the diabetic state, the present study was undertaken to investigate the renal repercussions of thyroparathyroidectomy in rats previously made diabetic by streptozotocin (45 mg/kg). Four to 6 days after the induction of diabetes (DM), a group of rats were thyroparathyroidectomized (DM + TPTX). Renal functional parameters were evaluated by measuring the inulin and sodium para-aminohippurate clearance on the tenth day. The decrease in the GFR and RPF observed in TPTX was not reversed by diabetes since the same alterations were observed in DM + TPTX. Net acid (NA) excretion was unchanged in DM (6.19 ± 0.54), decreased in TPTX (3.76 ± 0.25) and returned to normal levels in DM + TPTX (5.54 ± 0.72) when compared to the control group (6.34 ± 0.14 µmol min-1 kg-1). The results suggest that PTH plays an important vasodilator role regarding glomerular hemodynamics, since in its absence the impairment in GFR and RPF was not reversed by the diabetic state. However, with respect to acid excretion, the presence of diabetes was able to overcome the negative stimulus represented by TPTX.

A instruçio p~blica no Maranhão sofreu certas mudanças, a partir do Ato Adicibnal (1834), que coiocou sob a responsabilidade das Administrações provinciais a direção do ensino p~blico, primario e secundario no Brasil. No s~culo passado, (XIX), no final dos anos 30 e durante os decênios de 40 e 50, houve, no Maranhão, um certo esforço do Estado, no sentido de exercer um contróle maior sobre a instrução provincial e de desenvolver ~ uma. maior clientela o ensino elementar. Nessa época, foram. pr~:))lr?v1dos pela Administração local os primeiros incentivos ã di fusão do ensino t~cnico e agrIcola; e reorganizado o ensino securidirio com a criação do Liceu Maranhense. Nas ~ltimas d~cadas do Imperio, entretanto, o Estado demonstrou um gra~ de desinteresse pelo desenvolvimento da educa��ão escolar no Maranhão. As realizações oficiais dessa ~po~a, nos diver sos nIveis, ' foram insignificantes. A Administração Local, decretando o livre exeycIcio do ensino, em 1874, demonstrou legalmente o descaso a que relegou a instrução p~blica pr~ vincial. As tend��ncias verificadas no ensino p~blico maranhense, nesse perIodo (1834-1889), for~m sobretudo, por particularidades do processo determinadas, polItico-econô mico marannense da ~poca. As condições sociais maranhenses nas primeiras d��cadas favo receram, pois, o surgimento de uma maior preocupação do Es tado pela educa��ão escolar, enquanto que, na última fase, a situação político-econômica maranhense desestimulou um interesse maior do Estado pelo desenvolvimento do ensino público no Maranhão.

Abitati rupestri e citta' fortificate nella Sicilia occidentale dai bizantini ai normanni

La ricerca effettuata, analizza in modo razionale ma contestualmente divulgativo, le dinamiche insediative che hanno caratterizzato il paesaggio della Sicilia occidentale dall'occupazione bizantina al dominio da parte dei Normanni ( 535-1194 d.C. circa ). Il volume presenta una chiara raccolta dei documenti e delle fonti letterarie che riguarda gli abitati rurali ed i borghi incastellati della Sicilia occidentale e pone l’interesse sia per la cultura materiale che per la gestione ed organizzazione del territorio. Attraverso i risultati delle attestazioni documentarie, unite alle ricerche archeologiche ( effettuate nel territorio preso in esame sia in passato che nel corso degli ultimi anni ) viene redatto un elenco dei siti archeologici e dei resti monumentali ( aggiornato fino al 2013-14 ) in funzione della tutela, conservazione e valorizzazione del paesaggio. Sulla base dei documenti rinvenuti e delle varie fonti prese in esame ( letterarie, archeologiche, monumentali, toponomastiche ) vengono effettuate alcune considerazioni sull’insediamento sparso, sull’incastellamento, sulle istituzioni e sulla formazione delle civitates. L’indagine svolta, attraverso cui sono stati individuati i documenti e le fonti, comprende anche una parziale ricostruzione topografica dei principali centri abitativi indagati. Per alcune sporadiche strutture medievali, talvolta raffigurate in fortuite stampe del XVI-XVII secolo, è stato possibile, in aggiunta, eseguire un rilievo architettonico. La descrizione degli abitati rurali e dei siti fortificati, infine, è arricchita da una serie di schede in cui vengono evidenziati i siti archeologici, i resti monumentali ed i reperti più interessanti del periodo bizantino, arabo e normanno-svevo della Sicilia occidentale.

Bongars Quellenwerk zur Geschichte der Kreuzzüge

ln seinen letzten Lebensjahren gab Jacques Bongars (1554-1612) unter dem Titel Gesta Dei per Francos (Gottes Taten durch die Franken) eine zweibändige Sammlung von mittelalterlichen Texten zu den Kreuzzügen heraus, die 1611 im Verlagshaus Wechel in Hanau erschien. Er stellte in seinem Quellenwerk gegen zwanzig Texte verschiedenster Autoren zusammen, von denen viele zum ersten Mal überhaupt gedruckt wurden. Der zweite Band enthält ausschliesslich die Geschichte der Kreuzzüge des Venezianers Marino Sanudo d. Ä. (ca. 1270-ca. 1343). Diese Schrift mit dem Titel Liber secretorum fidelium crucis ist wissenschaftsgeschichtlich bedeutend aufgrund der darin enthaltenen Karten: einer Weltkarte, einer Karte von Ägypten (bzw. des östlichen Mittelmeeres und des Roten Meeres), einer Karte des Heiligen Landes sowie der Stadtpläne von Akkon und Jerusalem.
