Background  Doctors have the potential to influence opportunities for normative life experiences in the area of sexuality for individuals with intellectual disability (ID). Method  In Study One, 106 doctors completed the Attitudes to Sexuality Questionnaire (Individuals with an Intellectual Disability). In Study Two, 97 doctors completed a modified form of the questionnaire that included additional questions designed to assess their views about sterilisation. Results  Attitudes were less positive about parenting than about other aspects of sexuality, and less sexual freedom was seen as desirable for adults with ID. A surprising number of doctors agreed that sterilisation was a desirable practice. Study Two provided data about the conditions under which sterilisation was endorsed. Most doctors reported they had not been approached to perform sterilisations. Only 12% believed medical practitioners receive sufficient training in the area of disability and sexuality. Conclusions  The findings have implications for training and professional development for doctors.

During last decades there has been a continuous growth of aquaculture industries all over the world and taking into consideration the spurt in freshwater ornamental fish aquaculture and trade in Kerala, the present study was aimed to assess the prevalence of various motile Aeromonas spp. in fresh water ornamental fishes and associated carriage water. The extracellular virulence factors and the antibiogram of the isolates were also elucidated. Various species of motile aeromonads such as Aeromonas caviae, A. hydrophila, A. jandaei, A. schubertii, A. sobria, A. trota and A. veronii were detected. Aeromonas sobria predominated both fish and water samples. Extracellular enzymes and toxins produced by motile aeromonds are important elements of bacterial virulence. The production of extracellular virulence factors - proteases, lipase, DNase and haemolysin by the isolates were studied. All the isolates from both fish and water samples produced gelatinase and nuclease but the ability to produce lipase, caseinase and haemolysins was found to vary among isolates from different sources. Among the 15 antibiotics to which the isolates were tested, all the isolates were found to be sensitive to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin and resistant to amoxycillin. Local aquarists maintain the fish in crowded stressful conditions, which could trigger infections by the obligate/ opportunistic pathogenic members among motile aeromonads

Misuse of biocides has encouraged the emergence of resistance and cross-resistance in certain strains. This study investigated resistance of triclosan-adapted Escherichia coli K-12 and E. coli O55 to antimicrobial agents and compared these to E. coli O157:H7. Cross-resistance in E. coli K-12 and E. coli O55 was observed however to a lesser extent than in E. coli O157:H7. Triclosan-adapted E. coli K-12 demonstrated cross-resistance to chloramphenicol, whereas triclosan-adapted E. coli O55 exhibited resistance to trimethoprim. In comparison, E. coli O157:H7 was resistant to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, trimethoprim, benzalkonium chloride and chlorohexidine suggesting strain specific rather than general resistance mechanisms. © 2004 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. Background: A limited number of antibiotics are recommended for the therapy of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections due to therapy difficulties caused by its numerous mechanisms of resistance. Objectives: In this study conducted over a period of approximately 5 years we aimed to determine resistance rates of S. maltphilia based on drug classification recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Methods: A total of 118 S. maltphilia strains isolated from various clinical specimens between January 2006 and June 2012 were included in the study. BD Phoenixautomated microbiology system (Becton Dickinson, USA) was utilized for species level identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Results: Sixty seven of S. maltphilia strains were isolated from tracheal aspirate isolates, 17 from blood, 10 from sputum, 10 from wound and 14 from other clinical specimens. Levofloxacin was found to be the most effective antibiotic against S. maltphilia strains with resistance rate of 7.6%. The resistance rates to other antibiotics were as follows: chloramphenicol 18.2%, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 20.3% and ceftazidime 72%. Conclusion: The study revealed that S. maltphilia is resistant to many antibiotics. The treatment of infections caused by S. maltphilia should be preferred primarily as levofloxacin, chloramphenicol, and TMP-SXT, respectively.

Experiments were conducted to study the effects of probiotics and antibiotics on 3-months old biofilms formed on three different substrates, namely glass, granite and fiberglass reinforced plastic. The variations in heterotrophic bacterial populations associated with biofilms were monitored for a period of one month after one-time application of the probiotic Biogreen (Gee Key Marine Pvt. Ltd, Chennai) at 0.2 mg lˉ¹ and the antibiotic tetracycline at 1.0 mg lˉ¹. The variations in heterotrophic bacterial populations associated with biofilms were compared with that of control to analyse the effects of probiotics and antibiotics on biofilms. The observations showed that the biofilm formation and succession in aquatic environment is substrate dependent and that the resistance to antibiotics also depends on the substrate. The probiotics did not show significant effect on biofilms.

Considers the situations in which the presumption of advancement should apply to gifts given to family members and how this relates to the presumption of a resulting trust, whereby the law presumes that gifts are to be held for the benefit of the donor unless expressed otherwise, with reference to the Privy Council ruling in Antoni v Antoni. Highlights the bias inherent in the presumption of advancement where it operates for gifts given by husbands to wives, but not the other way round. [From Legal Journals Index]

Endocrine disruptors and pharmaceuticals are considered to be concerning environmental contaminants. During the last two decades, studies dealing with the occurrence and fate of these emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment have raised attention and its number is constantly increasing. The presence of these contaminants in the environment is particularly important since they are known to induce adverse effects in the ecosystems even at extremely low concentrations. Estrogens and antibiotics, in particular, are identified as capable of induce endocrine disruption and contribute for the appearance of multi-resistant bacteria, respectively. A better assessment and understanding of the real impact of these contaminants in the aquatic environment implies the evaluation of their occurrence and fate, which is the main aim of this Thesis. Two estrogens (17-estradiol and 17-ethinylestradiol) and an antibiotic (sulfamethoxazole) were the contaminants under study and their occurrence in surface and waste waters was assessed by the implementation of enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). The assays were optimized in order to accomplish two important aspects: to analyze complex water samples, giving special attention to matrix effects, and to increase the sensitivity. Since the levels of these contaminants in the environment are extremely low, a pre-concentration methodology was also object of study in this Thesis. Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed for the preconcentration of E2 and EE2, subsequently quantified by either highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the previously optimized ELISAs. Moreover, the use of anthropogenic markers, i.e. indicators of human presence or activity, has been discussed as a tool to track the origin and type of contamination. An ELISA for the quantification of caffeine, as an anthropogenic marker, was also developed in order to assess the occurrence of human domestic pollution in Portuguese surface waters. Finally, photodegradation is considered to be one of the most important pathways contributing for the mitigation of pollutants’ presence in the aquatic environment. Both direct and indirect photodegradation of E2 and EE2 were evaluated. Since the presence of humic substances (HS) is known to have a noticeable influence on the photodegradation of pollutants and in order to mimic the real aquatic environment, special attention was given to the influence of the presence and concentration of different fractions of HS on the photodegradation of both hormones.

Abrasion by glass fibers during injection molding of fiber reinforced plastics raises new challenges to the wear performance of the molds. In the last few decades, a large number of PVD and CVD coatings have been developed with the aim of minimizing abrasion problems. In this work, two different coatings were tested in order to increase the wear resistance of the surface of a mold used for glass fiber reinforced plastics: TiAlSiN and CrN/CrCN/DLC. TiAlSiN was deposited as a graded monolayer coating while CrN/CrCN/DLC was a nanostructured coating consisting of three distinct layers. Both coatings were produced by PVD unbalanced magnetron sputtering and were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro hardness (MH) and scratch test analysis. Coating morphology, thickness, roughness, chemical composition and structure, hardness and adhesion to the substrate were investigated. Wear resistance was characterized through industrial tests with coated samples and an uncoated reference sample inserted in a feed channel of a plastic injection mold working with 30 wt.% glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. Results after 45,000 injection cycles indicate that the wear resistance of the mold was increased by a factor of 25 and 58, by the TiAlSiN and CrN/CrCN/DLC coatings, respectively, over the uncoated mold steel.
