During the past century, significant improvements in the prevention, detection and treatment of infectious disease have positively impacted upon quality and quantity of life for many people worldwide. Despite this progress, there are large numbers of people currently living in developing regions of the world where infectious disease continues unabated. SurfAid International is a humanitarian organisation that has brought significant health improvements to the people living on the Mentawai and Nias islands of Indonesia. The SurfAid International Schools Program aims to develop global citizenship and social responsibility by providing a bridge between school settings and the critical work of SurfAid International. This paper provides a rationale for the development of contextualised school based programs and identifies potential impact upon the thoughts and actions of young people in schools.

Physical inactivity has become a major cause of the global increase in non-communicable disease (World Health Organisation, 2009}. In 2008, the World Economic Forum called for employers to be proactive in the prevention of non-communicable diseases in the workforce. A significant contributor to the development of a healthy workforce is a reliable pool of employees who are receptive to and aware of healthy lifestyle practices even before becoming employed. Health and Physical Education (HPE) is often stereotyped as 'doing sport'. However, if HPE is to play a part in the development of a healthy workforce, then the HPE learning environment must be about creating meaningful learning for all, which is clearly more than the creation of elite athletes. The ultimate aim of health and physical educators must be about 1) developing lifelong and habitual physical activity; 2) developing generic physical skills; 3) inspiring holistic and positive emotional attitudes and 4) instilling a focus on evidence based knowledge as a framework for inspiring active citizenship. As a response to the worldwide move to the development of healthier people, Australia currently has a strong momentum for an expanded and more unified role for HPE within a potential National curriculum. Other countries have engaged in such a process and much can be learned from their experiences of the process. The 2009 Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) conference was a landmark conference that included an International group of experts from all continents and twenty three countries. Creating Active Futures: Edited Proceedings of the 26th ACHPER International Conference is an amalgamation of research and professional perspectives presented at the conference. The papers in this volume emerged from those presented for peer review, rather than through seeking specific articles. This volume is divided into sections based on the five conference themes: 1) Issues in Health and Physical Education (HPE) Pedagogy; 2) Practical Application of Science in HPE; 3) Lifestyle Enhancement; 4) Developing Sporting Excellence; 5) Contemporary Games Teaching. The 'Issues in HPE Pedagogy' section provides a diverse set of perspectives on teaching HPE with papers from a range of topics that include first aid, philosophy, access, cultural characteristics, methods and teaching styles, curriculum, qualifications and emotional development. The second section links science to teaching HPE and provides a range of valuable information on injury prevention, information technology, personality and skill development. Section 3 is a collection of writings and research about Lifestyle Enhancement. Topics include the important role of adventure, the natural world, curriculum, migrant viewpoints, beliefs and globally focused programs in the development of active citizens. The section on sporting excellence contains papers that undertake to explain an aspect of excellence in sport. The last section of this volume highlights some contemporary views on teaching games.

Ross River Virus has caused reported outbreaks of epidemic polyarthritis, a chronic debilitating disease associated with significant long-term morbidity in Australia and the Pacific region since the 1920s. To address this public health concern, a formalin- and UV-inactivated whole virus vaccine grown in animal protein-free cell culture was developed and tested in preclinical studies to evaluate immunogenicity and efficacy in animal models. After active immunizations, the vaccine dose-dependently induced antibodies and protected adult mice from viremia and interferon α/β receptor knock-out (IFN-α/βR(-/-)) mice from death and disease. In passive transfer studies, administration of human vaccinee sera followed by RRV challenge protected adult mice from viremia and young mice from development of arthritic signs similar to human RRV-induced disease. Based on the good correlation between antibody titers in human sera and protection of animals, a correlate of protection was defined. This is of particular importance for the evaluation of the vaccine because of the comparatively low annual incidence of RRV disease, which renders a classical efficacy trial impractical. Antibody-dependent enhancement of infection, did not occur in mice even at low to undetectable concentrations of vaccine-induced antibodies. Also, RRV vaccine-induced antibodies were partially cross-protective against infection with a related alphavirus, Chikungunya virus, and did not enhance infection. Based on these findings, the inactivated RRV vaccine is expected to be efficacious and protect humans from RRV disease

Objective Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common inflammatory arthritis affecting primarily the axial skeleton. IL23R is genetically associated with AS. This study was undertaken to investigate and characterize the role of interleukin-23 (IL-23) signaling in AS pathogenesis. Methods The study population consisted of patients with active AS (n = 17), patients with psoriatic arthritis (n = 8), patients with rheumatoid arthritis, (n = 9), and healthy subjects (n = 20). IL-23 receptor (IL-23R) expression in T cells was determined in each subject group, and expression levels were compared. Results The proportion of IL-23R-expressing T cells in the periphery was 2-fold higher in AS patients than in healthy controls, specifically driven by a 3-fold increase in IL-23R-positive γ/δ T cells in AS patients. The proportions of CD4+ and CD8+ cells that were positive for IL-17 were unchanged. This increased IL-23R expression on γ/δ T cells was also associated with enhanced IL-17 secretion, with no observable IL-17 production from IL-23R-negative γ/δ T cells in AS patients. Furthermore, γ/δ T cells from AS patients were heavily skewed toward IL-17 production in response to stimulation with IL-23 and/or anti-CD3/CD28. Conclusion Recently, mouse models have shown IL-17-secreting γ/δ T cells to be pathogenic in infection and autoimmunity. Our data provide the first description of a potentially pathogenic role of these cells in a human autoimmune disease. Since IL-23 is a maturation and growth factor for IL-17-producing cells, increased IL-23R expression may regulate the function of this putative pathogenic γ/δ T cell population.

Therapy employing epidural electrostimulation holds great potential for improving therapy for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) (Harkema et al., 2011). Further promising results from combined therapies using electrostimulation have also been recently obtained (e.g., van den Brand et al., 2012). The devices being developed to deliver the stimulation are highly flexible, capable of delivering any individual stimulus among a combinatorially large set of stimuli (Gad et al., 2013). While this extreme flexibility is very useful for ensuring that the device can deliver an appropriate stimulus, the challenge of choosing good stimuli is quite substantial, even for expert human experimenters. To develop a fully implantable, autonomous device which can provide useful therapy, it is necessary to design an algorithmic method for choosing the stimulus parameters. Such a method can be used in a clinical setting, by caregivers who are not experts in the neurostimulator's use, and to allow the system to adapt autonomously between visits to the clinic. To create such an algorithm, this dissertation pursues the general class of active learning algorithms that includes Gaussian Process Upper Confidence Bound (GP-UCB, Srinivas et al., 2010), developing the Gaussian Process Batch Upper Confidence Bound (GP-BUCB, Desautels et al., 2012) and Gaussian Process Adaptive Upper Confidence Bound (GP-AUCB) algorithms. This dissertation develops new theoretical bounds for the performance of these and similar algorithms, empirically assesses these algorithms against a number of competitors in simulation, and applies a variant of the GP-BUCB algorithm in closed-loop to control SCI therapy via epidural electrostimulation in four live rats. The algorithm was tasked with maximizing the amplitude of evoked potentials in the rats' left tibialis anterior muscle. These experiments show that the algorithm is capable of directing these experiments sensibly, finding effective stimuli in all four animals. Further, in direct competition with an expert human experimenter, the algorithm produced superior performance in terms of average reward and comparable or superior performance in terms of maximum reward. These results indicate that variants of GP-BUCB may be suitable for autonomously directing SCI therapy.

Since 2001, NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment’s (CCMA) Biogeography Branch (BB) has been working with federal and territorial partners to characterize, monitor, and assess the status of the marine environment across the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). At the request of the St. Thomas Fisherman’s Association (STFA) and NOAA Marine Debris Program, CCMA BB developed new partnerships and novel technologies to scientifically assess the threat from derelict fish traps (DFTs). Traps are the predominant gear used for finfish and lobster harvesting in St. Thomas and St. John. Natural phenomena (ground swells, hurricanes) and increasing competition for space by numerous user groups have generated concern about increasing trap loss and the possible ecological, as well as economic, ramifications. Prior to this study, there was a general lack of knowledge regarding derelict fish traps in the Caribbean. No spatially explicit information existed regarding fishing effort, abundance and distribution of derelict traps, the rate at which active traps become derelict, or areas that are prone to dereliction. Furthermore, there was only limited information regarding the impacts of derelict traps on natural resources including ghost fishing. This research identified two groups of fishing communities in the region: commercial fishing that is most active in deeper waters (30 m and greater) and an unknown number of unlicensed subsistence and or commercial fishers that fish closer to shore in shallower waters (30 m and less). In the commercial fishery there are an estimated 6,500 active traps (fish and lobster combined). Of those traps, nearly 8% (514) were reported lost during the 2008-2010 period. Causes of loss/dereliction include: movement of the traps or loss of trap markers due to entanglement of lines by passing vessels; theft; severe weather events (storms, large ground swells); intentional disposal by fishermen; traps becoming caught on various bottom structures (natural substrates, wrecks, etc.); and human error.

Objectives: One third of the world population is considered latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis(LTBI) and sterilizing this reservoir of bacteria that may reactivate is required for tuberculosis (TB) elimination. Thegroup of individuals with LTBI is heterogeneous with some of them being more at risk to develop TB disease thanothers. Improved diagnosis of subjects with LTBI is needed, allowing to differentiate subjects with LTBI from thosewith active TB, and to select among LTBI subjects those who are more at risk to develop active TB. We havecharacterized at the cellular level both the quantitative and qualitative T cell responses to different mycobacterialantigens in selected populations of infected subjects in order to identify new biomarkers that could help to identify M.tuberculosis-infected subjects and to stratify them in risk groups for reactivation of the infection.Methods: Lymphoblast frequencies and cytokine production (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2) among CD4+ and CD8+ T cellswere analyzed by flow cytometry after in vitro stimulation with the latency antigen heparin-binding haemagglutinin(HBHA) or early-secreted antigen Target-6 (ESAT-6) of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from clinically wellcharacterized M. tuberculosis-infected humans (28 LTBI, 22 TB disease,12 controls). The LTBI group definedaccording to the Center for Disease Control guidelines was subdivided into QuantiFERON-TB Gold in-Tube (QFT)positive and negative subgroups.Results: Similar to TB patients, QFT+ LTBI subjects had higher proportions of HBHA-induced TNF-αsingle+ CD4+lymphocytes than QFT- LTBI subjects (p<0.05). Compared to LTBI subjects, TB patients had higher frequencies ofESAT-6-induced CD8+ lymphoblasts (p<0.001), higher proportions of ESAT-6-induced IFN-γ+TNF-α+ CD4+ Tlymphocytes (p<0.05), and lower proportions of HBHA-induced IFN-γ+TNF-α+IL-2+ (p<0.05) CD4+ T lymphocytes.Conclusions: These data provide new biomarkers to discriminate active TB from LTBI, and more interestingly,help to identify LTBI subjects with increased likelihood to develop TB disease.

Recent fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross-sections for FeXIII are used to generate emission-line ratios involving 3s23p2-3s3p3 and 3s23p2-3s23p3d transitions in the 170-225 and 235-450 Å wavelength ranges covered by the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS). A comparison of these line ratios with SERTS active region observations from rocket flights in 1989 and 1995 reveals generally very good agreement between theory and experiment. Several new FeXIII emission features are identified, at wavelengths of 203.79, 259.94, 288.56 and 290.81 Å. However, major discrepancies between theory and observation remain for several FeXIII transitions, as previously found by Landi and others, which cannot be explained by blending. Errors in the adopted atomic data appear to be the most likely explanation, in particular for transitions which have 3s23p3d1D2 as their upper level. The most useful FeXIII electron-density diagnostics in the SERTS spectral regions are assessed, in terms of the line pairs involved being (i) apparently free of atomic physics problems and blends, (ii) close in wavelength to reduce the effects of possible errors in the instrumental intensity calibration, and (iii) very sensitive to changes in Ne over the range 108-1011cm-3. It is concluded that the ratios which best satisfy these conditions are 200.03/202.04 and 203.17/202.04 for the 170-225 Å wavelength region, and 348.18/320.80, 348.18/368.16, 359.64/348.18 and 359.83/368.16 for 235-450 Å.
