In this paper we show that if the electrons in a quantum Hall sample are subjected to a constant electric field in the plane of the material, comparable in magnitude to the background magnetic field on the system of electrons, a multiplicity of edge states localized at different regions of space is produced in the sample. The actions governing the dynamics of these edge states are obtained starting from the well-known Schrödinger field theory for a system of nonrelativistic electrons, where on top of the constant background electric and magnetic fields, the electrons are further subject to slowly varying weak electromagnetic fields. In the regions between the edges, dubbed as the "bulk," the fermions can be integrated out entirely and the dynamics expressed in terms of a local effective action involving the slowly varying electromagnetic potentials. It is further shown how the bulk action is gauge noninvariant in a particular way, and how the edge states conspire to restore the U(1) electromagnetic gauge invariance of the system. In the edge action we obtain a heretofore unnoticed gauge-invariant term that depends on the particular edge. We argue that this term may be detected experimentally as different edges respond differently to a monochromatic probe due to this term

In the present paper we report on the experimental electron sheet density vs. magnetic field diagram for the magnetoresistance R(xx) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) with two occupied subbands. For magnetic fields above 9T, we found fractional quantum Hall levels centered around the filing factor v = 3/2 in both the two occupied electric subbands. We focused specially on the fractional levels of the second subband, whose experimental values of the magnetic field B of their minima do not obey a periodicity law in 1/|B-B(c)|, where B(c) is the critical field at the filling factor v = 3/2, and we explain this fact entirely in the framework of the composite fermions theory. We use a simple theoretical model to give a possible explanation for the fact. Copyright (c) EPLA, 2011

We report on the measurements of the quantum Hall effect states in double quantum well structures at the filling factors v = 4N + 1 and 4N + 3, where N is the Landau index number, in the presence of the in-plane magnetic field. The quantum Hall states at these filling factors vanish and reappear several times. Repeated reentrance of the transport gap occurs due to the periodic vanishing of the tunneling amplitude in the presence of the in-plane field. When the gap vanishes, the transport becomes anisotropic. The anisotropy persist at half-odd filling factors, when bilayer quantum Hall states are recovered with increase of the tilt angle. We have studied the quantum Hall effect in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As-double well structure with vanishing g-factor. We determined the density-magnetic field n(s) - B diagrams for the longitudinal resistance R(xx). In spite of the fact that the n(s) - B diagram for conventional GaAs double wells shows a striking similarity with the theory, we observed the strong difference between these diagrams for double wells with vanishing g-factor. We argue that the electron-electron interaction is responsible for unusual behavior of the Landau levels in such a system.

The influence of the interlayer coupling on formation of the quantized Hall phase at the filling factor v = 2 was studied in the multilayer GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures The disorder broaden Gaussian photoluminescence line due to the localized electrons was found in the quantized Hall phase of the isolated multi-quantum well structure On the other hand. the quantized Hall phase of the weakly-coupled multilayers emitted an asymmetrical line similar to that one observed in the metallic electron systems. We demonstrated that the observed asymmetry indicates a formation of the Fermi Surface in the quantized Hall phase of the multilayer electron system due to the interlayer peicolation. A sharp decrease of the single-particle scattering time associated with the extended states oil the Fermi surface was observed at the filling factor v = 2. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved

The photoluminescence from individual quantum wells of artificially disordered weakly coupled multi-layers embedded in wide AlGaAs parabolic wells was investigated in a strong magnetic field. We show that the response of the individual wells is very different from the average response of the multi-layers studied by transport measurements and that photoluminescence represents a local probe of the quantum Hall state formed in three-dimensional electron system. The observed magnetic field induced variations of the in-layer electron density demonstrate the formation of a new phase in the quasi-three-dimensional electron system. The sudden change in the local electron density found at the Landau filling factor nu = 1 by both the magneto-transport and the magneto-photoluminescence measurements was assigned to the quantum phase transition. Polarized photoluminescence from weakly coupled random multiple well quasi-three-dimensional electron system is studied in the regime of the integer quantum Hall effect. Two quantum Hall ferromagnetic ground states assigned to the uncorrelated miniband quantum Hall state and to the spontaneous interwell phase coherent dimer quantum Hall state are observed. Photoluminescence associated with these states exhibits features caused by finite-size skyrmions: dramatic reduction of the electron spin polarization when the magnetic field is increased past the filling factor nu = 1. The effective skyrmion size is larger than in two-dimensional electron systems.

Polarized magnetophotoluminescence is employed to study the energies and occupancies of four lowest Landau levels in a couple quantum Hall GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum well. As a result, a magnetic field-induced redistribution of charge over the Landau levels manifesting to the continuous formation of the charge density wave and direct evidence for the symmetric-antisymmetric gap shrinkage at v = 3 are found. The observed interlayer charge exchange causes depolarization of the ferromagnetic ground state.

The two-dimensional electron gas formed at the semiconductor heterointerface is a theater for many intriguing plays of physics. The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), which occurs in strong magnetic fields and low temperatures, is the most fascinating of them. The concept of composite fermions and bosons not only is beautiful by itself but also has proved highly successful in providing pictorial interpretation of the phenomena associated with the FQHE.

We model the quantum Hall effect in heterostructures made of two gapped graphene stripes with different gaps, Δ1 and Δ2. We consider two main situations, Δ1=0,Δ2≠0, and Δ1=−Δ2. They are different in a fundamental aspect: only the latter features kink states that, when intervalley coupling is absent, are protected against backscattering. We compute the two-terminal conductance of heterostructures with channel length up to 430 nm, in two transport configurations, parallel and perpendicular to the interface. By studying the effect of disorder on the transport along the boundary, we quantify the robustness of kink states with respect to backscattering. Transport perpendicular to the boundary shows how interface states open a backscattering channel for the conducting edge states, spoiling the perfect conductance quantization featured by the homogeneously gapped graphene Hall bars. Our results can be relevant for the study of graphene deposited on hexagonal boron-nitride, as well as to model graphene with an interaction-driven gapped phase with two equivalent phases separated by a domain wall.

Application of a perpendicular magnetic field to charge neutral graphene is expected to result in a variety of broken symmetry phases, including antiferromagnetic, canted, and ferromagnetic. All these phases open a gap in bulk but have very different edge states and noncollinear spin order, recently confirmed experimentally. Here we provide an integrated description of both edge and bulk for the various magnetic phases of graphene Hall bars making use of a noncollinear mean field Hubbard model. Our calculations show that, at the edges, the three types of magnetic order are either enhanced (zigzag) or suppressed (armchair). Interestingly, we find that preformed local moments in zigzag edges interact with the quantum spin Hall like edge states of the ferromagnetic phase and can induce backscattering.

We show that the one-way channel formalism of quantum optics has a physical realization in electronic systems. In particular, we show that magnetic edge states form unidirectional quantum channels capable of coherently transporting electronic quantum information. Using the equivalence between one-way photonic channels and magnetic edge states, we adapt a proposal for quantum state transfer to mesoscopic systems using edge states as a quantum channel, and show that it is feasible with reasonable experimental parameters. We discuss how this protocol may be used to transfer information encoded in number, charge, or spin states of quantum dots, so it may prove useful for transferring quantum information between parts of a solid-state quantum computer

The skyrmions in SU(N) quantum Hall (QH) system are discussed. By analyzing the gauge field structure and the topological properties of this QH system it is pointed out that in the SU(N) QH system there can exist (N-1) types of skyrmion structures, instead of only one type of skyrmions. In this paper, by means of the Abelian projections according to the (N-1) Cartan subalgebra local bases, we obtain the (N-1) U(1) electromagnetic field tensors in the SU(N) gauge field of the QH system, and then derive (N-1) types of skyrmion structures from these U(1) sub-field tensors. Furthermore, in light of the phi-mapping topological current method, the topological charges and the motion of these skyrmions are also discussed.

In the quantum Hall regime, the longitudinal resistivity rho (xx) plotted as a density-magnetic-field (n (2D) -B) diagram displays ringlike structures due to the crossings of two sets of spin split Landau levels from different subbands [see, e.g., Zhang et al., in Phys. Rev. Lett. 95:216801, 2005. For tilted magnetic fields, some of these ringlike structures ""shrink"" as the tilt angle is increased and fully collapse at theta (c) a parts per thousand 6A degrees. Here we theoretically investigate the topology of these structures via a non-interacting model for the 2DEG. We account for the inter Landau-level coupling induced by the tilted magnetic field via perturbation theory. This coupling results in anticrossings of Landau levels with parallel spins. With the new energy spectrum, we calculate the corresponding n (2D) -B diagram of the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level. We argue that the DOS displays the same topology as rho (xx) in the n (2D) -B diagram. For the ring with filling factor nu=4, we find that the anticrossings make it shrink for increasing tilt angles and collapse at a large enough angle. Using effective parameters to fit the theta=0A degrees data, we find a collapsing angle theta (c) a parts per thousand 3.6A degrees. Despite this factor-of-two discrepancy with the experimental data, our model captures the essential mechanism underlying the ring collapse.
