Pressure transitions of Se-Te alloys have been studied over the entire range of compositions. Conductivities have also been measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Transition pressures, activation barriers and isothermal conductivities exhibit distinct changes of slope in their variation as a function of composition at about 8 at % of Te. Transition pressures change slope at not, vert, similar 35% Te also. An attempt has been made to explain these observations on the basis of the size effect of Te which, in turn, affects the electron energy dispersions in the band structure.

The effect of pressure on the electrical resistivity of bulk Si20Te80 glass is reported. Results of calorimetric, X-ray and transmission electron microscopy investigations at different stages of crystallization of bulk Si20Te80 glass are also presented. A pressure induced glass-to-crystal transition occurs at a pressure of 7 GPa. Pressure and temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of Si20Te80 glass show the observed transition is a pressure induced glassy semiconductor to crystalline metal transition. The glass also exhibits a double Tg effect and double stage crystallization, under heating. The differences between the temperature induced crystallization (primary crystallization) and pressure induced congruent crystallization are discussed.

We have synthesized FINEMET type amorphous Fe73.5Cu1Mo3Si13.5-xAlxB9 alloy by the single wheel melt spinning technique. The effect of Al substitution on the magnetic properties has been studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer, SQUID and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Magnetization and Curie temperature of the amorphous phase of the alloys were found to decrease with A] concentration. The results are attributed to the dilution effect of At on the magnetic moment of Fe and to the increase in Fe-Fe interaction distance resulting in the weakening of exchange interaction. From the quaternary Ti-Zr-Hf-Ni phase diagram. the cross-section at 20 at % Ni was selected for investigation. The icosahedral quasicrystalline, crystalline and amorphous phases were observed to form in nine kinds of rapidly solidified (TixZryHfz)(80)Ni-20 (x + y + z = 1) alloys at different compositions. The quasilattice constants of 0.519 and 0.531 nm were obtained for the icosahedral phase formed in the melt-spun Ti40Zr20Hf20Ni20 and Ti20Zr40Hf20Ni20 alloys. respectively. The icosahedral phase formed in the melt-spun Ti40Zr20Hf20Ni20 alloy especially is thermodynamically stable. The supercooled liquid region of the Ti20Zr20Hf40Ni20 glassy alloy reached 64 K. From these results a comparison of quasicrystal-forming and glass-forming abilities, was carried out. The quasicrystal-forming ability was reduced and glass-forming ability was improved with an increase in Hf and Zr contents in the (TixZryHfz)(80)Ni-20 alloys. On the other hand. an increase in Ti content caused an improvement in quasicrystal-forming ability.

Rapidly solidified Al–Cr alloys up to 20 at. % Cr were studied to delineate the extent of crystalline and quasicrystalline phase formation in these alloys in comparison with as-cast alloys by using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction technique. The icosahedral quasicrystals are observed from 7 to 15 at. % Cr alloys, while equilibrium ?–Al11Cr2 phase is completely absent. Both rapid solidification and subsequent thermal decomposition studies indicate that the main competing phase is ?–Al2Cr up to 15 at. % Cr. Beyond this composition ?–Al4Cr is the dominant phase together with a small amount of ?4–Al7Cr3. We have shown that the electron diffraction patterns of Al–Cr quasicrystals are often associated with a diffuse intensity distribution, indicative of short-range order. The change in quasilattice constant with composition suggests the existence of structural vacancies. Further, a sudden change from coarse to ultrafine quasicrystalline grain structure in Al-7 at. % Cr alloy points to a change in nucleation mechanism from heterogeneous to homogeneous mode during the rapid solidification.
The melting and solidification of nanoscale Bi particles embedded in a glassy and crystalline matrix

We report the formation of an amorphous phase in nanosized Pi particles embedded in an Al-based glassy alloy matrix. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) has been used to show that the particles contain crystalline and amorphous portions. A depression of the melting point by more than 100 K of the crystalline portion of the Pi particles was found by differential scanning calorimetric studies and by in-situ electron microscopy using a heating stage. The same techniques established the absence of an amorphous phase in the particles when the matrix is crystallized. It is shown that the formation of the amorphous phase and the depression of the melting point cannot be explained by the pressure developed by the volume change during solidification in this constrained system.

The present paper considers the formation of crystalline phases during solidification and crystallisation of the Zr53Cu21Al10Ni8Ti8 alloy. Solidification was carried out by a copper mould casting technique, which yielded a partially crystalline microstructure comprising a `big cube phase' in a dendritic morphology and a bct Zr2Ni phase. Detailed high-resolution microscopy was carried out to determine possible mechanisms for the formation of the crystalline phases. Based on microstructural examinations, it was established that the dendrites grew by the attachment of atomistic ledges. The bct Zr2Ni phase, formed during solidification and crystallisation, showed various types of faults depending on the crystallite size, and its crystallography was examined in detail. It has been shown that the presence of these faults could be explained by anti-site occupancy in the bct lattice of the Zr2Ni phase.

In this paper, we report on the application aspect of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on flexible phynox alloy substrate. Highly crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering and were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM analysis. Also, the effective d(33) coefficient value measurement was performed. The actuator element is a circular diaphragm of phynox alloy on to which piezoelectric ZnO thin film was deposited. ZnO film deposited actuator element was firmly fixed inside a suitable concave perspex mounting designed specifically for micro actuation purpose. The actuator element was excited at different frequencies for the supply voltages of 2V, 5V and 8V. Maximum deflection of the ZnO film deposited diaphragm was measured to be 1.25 mu m at 100 Hz for the supply voltage of 8V. The developed micro actuator has the potential to be used as a micro pump for pumping nano liters to micro liters of fluids per minute for numerous biomedical and aerospace applications.

The influence of microstructure and texture developed by different modes of hot cross-rolling on in-plane anisotropy (A (IP)) of yield strength, work hardening behavior, and anisotropy of Knoop hardness (KHN) yield locus has been investigated. The A (IP) and work hardening behavior are evaluated by tensile testing at 0 deg, 45 deg, and 90 deg to the rolling direction, while yield loci have been generated by directional KHN measurements. It has been observed that specimens especially in the peak-aged temper, in spite of having a strong, rotated Brass texture, show low A (IP). The results are discussed on the basis of Schmid factor analyses in conjunction with microstructural features, namely grain morphology and precipitation effects. For the specimen having a single-component texture, the yield strength variation as a function of orientation can be rationalized by the Schmid factor analysis of a perfectly textured material behaving as a quasi-single crystal. The work hardening behavior is significantly affected by the presence of solute in the matrix and the state of precipitation rather than texture, while yield loci derived from KHN measurements reiterate the low anisotropy of the materials. Theoretic yield loci calculated from the texture data using the visco-plastic self-consistent model and Hill's anisotropic equation are compared with that obtained experimentally.

The combustion of oxidizer zinc nitrate and fuel oxalic acid results in quasi-fibrous zinc oxide. The processing parameters including oxidizer to fuel ratio, time and temperature were optimized for the resultant crystal structure and morphology. Pure hexagonal phase formation does not depend on the fuel ratio, but a stoichiometric ratio of oxidizer to fuel at 450 degrees C and 30 min results in highly crystalline ZnO with 3 mu m length and 0.5 mu m width. This quasi-fiber originates from partial fusion of near spherical, similar to 60 nm particles during the rapid rate of reaction in the combustion process. Transmission electron microscopic analysis confirms the anisotropic primary particle orientation and pore distribution within the developed quasi-fibrous particles. The degradation of methyl orange was assessed by degrading the dye in the presence of the synthesized ZnO (2.95 eV) under both UV and visible light. Quasi-fibrous zinc oxide exhibits effective photocatalytic efficiency under visible light irradiation.

In an electrochemical alloying reaction, the electroactive particles become mechanically unstable owing to large volume changes occurring as a result of high amounts of lithium intake. This is detrimental for long-term battery performance. Herein, a novel synthesis approach to minimize such mechanical instabilities in tin particles is presented. An optimal one-dimensional assembly of crystalline single-phase tin-antimony (SnSb) alloy nanoparticles inside porous carbon fibers (abbreviated SnSb-C) is synthesized for the first time by using the electrospinning technique (employing non-oxide precursors) in combination with a sintering protocol. The ability of antimony to alloy independently with lithium is beneficial as it buffers the unfavorable volume changes occurring during successive alloying/dealloying cycles in Sn. The SnSb-C assembly provides nontortuous (tortuosity coefficient, =1) fast conducting pathways for both electrons and ions. The presence of carbon in SnSb-C completely nullifies the conventional requirement of other carbon forms during cell electrode assembly. The SnSb-C exhibited remarkably high electrochemical lithium stability and high specific capacities over a wide range of currents (0.2-5Ag(-1)). In addition to lithium-ion batteries, it is envisaged that SnSb-C also has potential as a noncarbonaceous anode for other battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion batteries.

The effects of combined additions of Ca and Sb on the microstructure and tensile properties of AZ91D alloy fabricated by squeeze-casting have been investigated. For comparison, the same has also been studied with and without individual additions of Ca and Sb. The results indicate that both individual and combined additions refine the grain size and beta-Mg17Al12 phase, which is more pronounced with combined additions. Besides alpha-Mg and beta-Mg17Al12 phases, a new reticular Al2Ca and rod-shaped Mg3Sb2 phases are formed following individual additions of Ca and Sb in the AZ91D alloy. With combined additions, an additional Ca2Sb phase is formed suppressing Mg3Sb2 phase. Additions of both Ca and Sb increase yield strength (YS) at both ambient and elevated temperatures up to 200 degrees C. However, both ductility and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decrease first up to 150 degrees C and then increase at 200 degrees C. The increase in YS is attributed to the refinement of grain size, whereas, ductility and UTS are deteriorated by the presence of brittle Al2Ca, Mg3Sb2 and Ca2Sb phases. The best tensile properties are obtained in the AZXY9110 alloy owing to the presence of lesser amount of brittle Al2Ca and Ca2Sb phases resulted from the optimum content of 1.0Ca and 0.3Sb (wt%). The fracture surface of the tensile specimen tested at ambient temperature reveals cleavage failure that changes to quasi-cleavage at 200 degrees C. The squeeze-cast alloys exhibited better tensile properties as compared to that of the gravity-cast alloys nullifying the detrimental effects of Ca and/or Sb additions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were produced on AM50 Mg alloy in alkaline phosphate based electrolyte with montmorillonite clay additives employing current densities of 30, 60, and 120 mA/cm(2). The effect of current density on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating was investigated. The clay additives got melted and reactively incorporated into the coating forming an amorphous phase, at all the current densities. However, the coating was predominantly amorphous only at 30 mA/cm(2) and with increasing current density, increasing fractions of crystalline phases were formed. Higher current densities resulted in increased thickness of the coating, but reduced the compactness of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 0.5 wt.% (0.08 M) and 3.5 wt.% (0.6 M) NaCl solution revealed that the coatings processed at 30 mA/cm(2) exhibited a relatively better initial corrosion resistance owing to its relatively defect-free barrier layer and compactness of the coating. However, the presence of amorphous phases in significant amounts and lack of MgO in the coating resulted in increased rate of dissolution of the coatings and degradation of corrosion resistance. Coatings produced at higher current densities exhibited initial inferior corrosion resistance due to a more defective barrier layer and increased porosity in pore band and outer porous layer. However, the increased amount of crystalline phases and an increased amount of MgO, which resisted dissolution, counterbalanced the negative effects of defective barrier and increased porosity resulting in a relatively lower rate of the degradation of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion resistance of all the coatings continuously decreased with time and became similar after prolonged immersion in NaCl solution. Increasing current density, therefore, did not prove to be beneficial for the improvement of the corrosion performance of the PEO coatings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Hall coefficient and resistance in several specimens of an amorphous metallic alloy containing 80 at.% palladium and 20 at.% silicon have been investigated at temperatures between 4.2°K and room temperature. An ideal limiting behavior of these transport coefficients was analyzed on the basis of the nearly free electron model to yield a carrier density of 9 x 1022 cm.-3, or about 1.7 electrons per palladium atom, and a mean free path of about 9Å which is almost constant with temperature. The deviations of the individual specimens from this ideal behavior, which were small but noticeable in the relative resistivity and much greater in the Hall coefficient, can be explained by invoking disk-shaped crystalline regions with low resistivity and a positive Hall coefficient. A detailed calculation shows how a volume fraction of such crystalline material too small to be noticed in X-ray diffraction could have a significant effect on the resistivity and a much greater effect on the Hall coefficient.
