This article discusses the evaluation of Stop Suicide, a regional association active in youth suicide prevention in Switzerland. The first part of the article presents and discusses the activities of Stop Suicide and its national context, characterized by an absence of a general national suicide prevention program. The second part specifically focuses on the evaluation of Stop Suicide, based on interviews with the members of the association's network. The evaluation reported an assessment carried out regarding the members' general perceptions about the association and its collaborations. The article suggests the possibility of creating a branch for coordinating regional suicide prevention, and it highlights the need to evaluate the impact and effects of the activities on the population concerned, youth

In 2007, an alliance was formed between the Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Planning Committee and the Illinois Suicide Prevention Coalition, unifying the strengths of the groups to continue to advance the plan. The joint mission of this alliance is "to reduce suicide and its stigma throughout Illinois by collaboratively working with concerned stakeholders from the public and private sectors to increase awareness and education, provide opportunities to develop individual and organizational capacity in addressing suicide prevention, and advocate for access to treatment."

In addition to the development and implementation of an Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan, the alliance was charged with reviewing the statutorily prescribed missions, policies and procedures of the Illinois departments of Public Health, Human Services and Aging and the State Board of Education. This report is a compilation of that review and includes recommendations to incorporate suicide prevention in the missions, policies and procedures of these state agencies.

Telephone counselling is an accessible and confidential means by which distressed young people can seek help. Telephone counselling services were funded under Australia's National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy between 1997 and 2000. In this study, the effectiveness of telephone counselling for young people seeking help in the context of suicidal ideation or intent was evaluated in an investigation of calls made by suicidal young people to a telephone counselling service. Independent raters measured callers' suicidality and mental state at the beginning and, end of 100 taped counselling sessions. Changes in suicidality and mental state were measured using a reliable rating scale developed for the study. Significant decreases in suicidality and significant improvement in mental state were found to occur during the course of counselling sessions, suggesting positive immediate impact.-Limitations of the study with respect to longer-term outcomes and the relevance of the results for suicide prevention are discussed. Notwithstanding the study limitations, the results lend support for continuing development of hotline services.

Australia's National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS) is about to move into a new funding phase. In this context this paper considers the emphasis of the NSPS since its inception in 1999. Certain high-risk groups (particularly people with mental illness and people who have self-harmed) have been relatively neglected, and some promising approaches (particularly selective and indicated interventions) have been under-emphasised. This balance should be re-dressed and the opportunity should be taken to build the evidence-base regarding suicide prevention. Such steps have the potential to maximise the impact of suicide prevention activities in Australia.

International research informs us that any economic downturn leads to an increase in suicides. In one recent article in the Lancet it was stated that a 1.0% increase in unemployment led to 0.7% increase in suicides. Such analysis is startling and in Ireland more than relevant as our suicide numbers rose dramatically in 2009 and 2010. Provisional figures for 2009 indicated a record number of 527 recorded suicides and even though there was a slight fall in 2010 the figure remains unacceptably high. It is likely that when the year of occurrence figures for these years are published the numbers will be even higher This year we have included a section in Chapter 5 on the year on year difference between ‘provisional’ (year of registration) data and ‘official’ (year of occurrence) data which highlights the reason why these two data sets cannot be directly compared. We also acknowledge that some undetermined deaths can also be classified as suicides. Ongoing analysis of this data is therefore important. What is particularly worrying and perhaps not unexpected is the rise in suicides in the middle age groups, both men and women. Such a dramatic increase can largely be attributed to the fracturing and resulting stress and pressure on individuals which has occurred in our society due to the economic downturn.   .

Suicide prevention is a significant public health issue in Ireland given the increase in suicide mortality and the emerging evidence of the negative impact of the economic downturn on mental health. In 2013, work commenced on the development of a new National Strategic Framework for Suicide Prevention. This Framework will provide a clear road map in relation to suicide prevention in Ireland. It will build upon the valuable work completed under Reach Out, the current National Strategy, and will reflect the best national and international evidence on suicide prevention to provide a clear set of actions and outcomes. The key principle to the Framework development is that of working together with our partners and the community, with a sense of common purpose, to achieve our shared aim: reducing the number of suicides in Ireland.   .

Background: Gatekeeper training for community facilitators, to identify and respond to those at risk of suicide, forms an important part of multi-level community-based suicide prevention programmes. Aims: This study examined the effects of gatekeeper training on attitudes, knowledge and confidence of police officers in dealing with persons at risk of suicide. Methods: A total of 828 police officers across three European regions participated in a 4-hour training programme which addressed the epidemiology of depression and suicidal behaviour, symptoms of depression, warning signs and risk factors associated with suicidal behaviour, motivating help-seeking behaviour, dealing with acute suicidal crisis and informing bereaved relatives. Participants completed internationally validated questionnaires assessing stigmatising attitudes, knowledge about depression and confidence in dealing with suicidal persons pre- and post-training. Results: There were significant differences among countries in terms of previous exposure to suicidal persons and extent of previous training. Post-training evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in stigmatising attitudes, knowledge and confidence in all three countries. Conclusion: The consistently positive effects of gatekeeper training of police officers across different regions support inclusion of this type of training as a fundamental part of multi-level community-based suicide prevention programmes and roll-out, nationally and internationally.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Iowa’s Suicide Prevention Strategy Steering Committee, hereinafter referred to as the Committee, has guided the development of the Iowa Plan for Suicide Prevention: 2011 to 2014. The committee reviewed the most recent Iowa Plan for Suicide Prevention 2005-2009 and the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent Suicide and the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, which highlights the need to increase awareness of suicide as a public health issue and calls for a public health approach toward suicide prevention.

Este projeto de intervenção surgiu com a necessidade para ser discutida e abordada a temática do suicídio no município de Bom Progresso/RS, o qual apresentou-se frequente na minha prática diária como clinica da Estratégia de Saúde da Família(ESF). Tendo em vista todo o contexto histórico regional sobre o assunto e o “tabu” que o mesmo encerra, percebeu-se a necessidade da criação de um Programa de Prevenção ao Suicídio (PPS), que engloba atividades como reuniões multidisciplinares dos profissionais da ESF, uma adequação da rede de atenção regional e o serviço de referência e contrareferência, além de palestras e rodas de conversa com a população e escolares na tentativa desmistificar este assunto. Portanto, com esse projeto de intervenção, busca-se a prevenção do comportamento suicida, a qualificação da atenção aos envolvidos em um caso de ideação, tentativa e suicídio, afim de garantir um acolhimento e tratamento adequado a estes pacientes, e também a promoção de debates com a sociedade local para o enfrentamento real deste problema.
