Otto Kelland’s Model Dories and the Digital Archives Initiative

Otto Kelland was a truly unique individual in Newfoundland. During his long life he had several careers from being a prison superintendant to being an instructor at Marine Institute. During his life Kelland made hundreds of wooden boat models. They are beautifuly hand-crafted and represented the type of watercraft used by fishermen in Newfoundland. The collection of boat models made by Otto Kelland and owned by Marine Institute made an ideal object to be digitalized. In particular the collection of dories was an ideal group to be digitized. They were housed in one cabinet and accompanied by hand-written documents describing each model. The Digital Archives Initiative (DAI) is a “gateway to the learning and research-based cultural resources held by Memorial University of Newfoundland and partnering organizations.” The DAI hosts a variety of collections which together reinforce the importance, past and present, of Newfoundland and Labrador's history and culture. I will give an oral presentation of the project followed by a demonstration of the Otto Kelland Dories exhibit on the Digital Archives Initiative (DAI) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Prismas do exílio : trajetória intelectual e modelagem do self em Anatol Rosenfeld e Otto maria Carpeaux

Esta tese tem por objetivo investigar as trajetórias intelectuais de Anatol Rosenfeld e Otto Maria Carpeaux. Exilados no Brasil durante a década de 30 do século passado, em função do avanço do nazifascismo na Europa, o alemão Rosenfeld e o austríaco Carpeaux souberam reinventar suas existências na nova terra, transformando-se em dois dos maiores críticos literários do país. Além de examinar os itinerários percorridos por ambos os autores, esta tese terá como foco analisar a relação entre exílio e atividade intelectual, promovendo uma reflexão a respeito do lugar das cidades de Berlim e Viena na construção do arcabouço espiritual de Rosenfeld e Carpeaux. Este estudo também tratará das suas primeiras produções em solo brasileiro, bem como da recepção que obtiveram de seus anfitriões, delineando, assim, os contornos de uma complexa atmosfera intelectual marcada por uma espécie de cordialidade literária. Como último objetivo, esta tese debaterá o processo de modelagem do self por meio do qual ambos os críticos conseguiram aprimorar a própria individualidade, tornando-se, enfim, figuras cuja memória deve ser recuperada.

Ipseidade e à-mão: contribuição ao programa de uma fenomenologia positivamente orientada do ser-no-mundo por Karl-Otto Apel

Esta tese tem como ponto de partida a identificação, resgate e reconstrução de um programa de pesquisas delineado por Karl-Otto Apel perifericamente à fração intermediária de seu pensamento, ao qual se referirá como "fenomenologia positivamente orientada do ser-no-mundo". Oriundo de uma leitura fenomenológica que vincula o projeto do "segundo" L. Wittgenstein à analítica do ser-aí do "primeiro" M. Heidegger, o programa de Apel tem como eixo principal a retomada e aprimoramento do que ele denomina, conforme com o vocabulário de Heidegger, crítica à "ontologia da pré-manualidade" (Vorhandenheitsontologie). Da formulação por Apel da "crítica à ontologia da pré-manualidade", então aprofundada e recomposta como "crítica à pré-manualidade", conduzir-se-á à reivindicação e ao delineamento primário de uma agenda de pesquisas que, no propósito da confrontação de questões pertinentes à fundamentação e à validação científica da sociologia, desdobrar-se-á em três distintos planos de investigação: o problema do fundamento, o problema cientificamente relevante da verdade (empírica) e o problema da sociologia enquanto ciência empírica.

Variable temperature, variable-gap Otto prism coupler for use in a vacuum environment

The field of surface polariton physics really took off with the prism coupling techniques developed by Kretschmann and Raether, and by Otto. This article reports on the construction and operation of a rotatable, in vacuo, variable temperature, Otto coupler with a coupling gap that can be varied by remote control. The specific design attributes of the system offer additional advantages to those of standard Otto systems of (i) temperature variation (ambient to 85 K), and (ii) the use of a valuable, additional reference point, namely the gap-independent reflectance at the Brewster angle at any given, fixed temperature. The instrument is placed firmly in a historical context of developments in the field. The efficacy of the coupler is demonstrated by sample attenuated total reflectance results on films of platinum, niobium, and yttrium barium copper oxide and on aluminum/gallium arsenide (Al/GaAs) Schottky diode structures. En el presente documento se presenta el desarrollo de la creación de una base de datos para el diagnóstico de fallas en los motores de combustión interna MPFI mediante el análisis del sensor MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure), a través del cual se puede determinar y diagnosticar fallas en sensores, actuadores y sistemas auxiliares.

L’éthique de la discussion : Portée et limites des propositions de Karl-Otto Apel

Management sciences and corporate practices of companies bring extensive views on the ethics and the corporate responsibility. The practical experiments try to build, and to make appropriate themselves to itself by the actors of companies, the deontological ethics governed by principles. Dialogue and deliberation are the political frame given to this construction. A question seems then central, that of the ultimate rational foundation of the morality and its normative contents. K.O. Apel’s propositions concerning his ethics of the discussion founded in a pragmatico-transcendental way seems to me to allow an essential advance on the subject. According to Apel, this foundation should supply: 1) The bases of an ultimate rational foundation of the morality and its normative contents, 2) The bases of the universal validity of a principle of justice, solidarity and co responsibility, 3) The bases of an ethics of the responsibility, but not an deontological ethics, governed by principles which could come to complete and to legitimize socio organizational processes and systems of relations which, placed in a new ethical context, could continue. In this article, I try to show in what K.O. Apel’s propositions allow to enrich a reflection opened by the research works in business ethics and in organizational behavior.
