A new method of reversibly moving US nanoparticles in the perpendicular direction was developed on the basis of the phase separation of block copolymer brushes. Polystyrene-b-(poly(methyl methaerylate)-co-poly(cadmium dimethacrylate)) (PS-b-(PMMA-co-PCdMA)) brushes were grafted from the silicon wafer by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). By exposing the polymer brushes to H2S gas, PS-b-(PMNlA-co-PCdNlA) brushes were converted to polystyrene-b-(poly(methyl methacrylate) -co-poly(methacrylic acid)(CdS)) (PS-b-(PMMA-co-PMAA(CdS))) brushes, in which US nanoparticles were chemically bonded by the carboxylic groups of PMAA segment. Alternating treatment of the PS-b-(PMMA-co-PMAA(CdS)) brushes by selective solvents for the outer block (a mixed solvent of acetone and ethanol) and the inner PS block (toluene) induced perpendicular phase separation of polymer brushes, which resulted in the reversible lifting and lowering of US nanoparticles in the perpendicular direction. The extent of movement can be adjusted by the relative thickness of two blocks of the polymer brushes.

The electrochemical behavior of polystyrene modified with gold nanoparticle (Au NPs) was investigated in terms of pH-responsive polymer brush. A pH-responsive of modified polymer brush from tethered polystyrene was prepared and used for selective gating transport of anions andcations across the thin-film. An ITO-coated glass electrode was used as substrate and applied to study the switchable permeability of the polymer brush triggered by changes in pH of the aqueous environment. The pH-sensitive behavior of the polymer brush interface has been demonstrated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). CV experiments showed at ph values of 4 and 8 induces swelling and shrinking of the grafted polymer brushes, respectively, and this behavior is fast and reversible. LSPR measurements showed a blue shift of 33 nm in the surface resonance band changes by local pH. The paper brings an easy methodology to fabrication a variety of nanosensors based on the polymer brushes-nanoparticle assemblies. © 2013 by ESG.

Preferential adsorption of poly(2-vinylpyridine)-deuterated polystyrene-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PVP-dPS-PVP) triblock copolymers from toluene onto silicon leads to the formation of dPS loops tethered by the PVP end blocks. Using neutron reflectometry, we have determined the segment density profiles of these looped polymer brushes in toluene, a good solvent for the dPS block, and in cyclohexane at 20 °C (poor solvent), 32 °C, (near-Θ solvent), and 50 °C (marginal solvent). While the swelling behavior qualitatively agrees with that observed for singly grafted brushes, there are interesting differences in the local structural details: In a good solvent, the segment density profiles are composed of an inner parabolic region and a long, extended tail. In cyclohexane, the profiles are described by exponential decays. We ascribe these features to a novel polydispersity effect that arises due to tethering the PS loops by both ends. The results also show that the less dense layers undergo more significant changes in swollen height as solvent quality is changed and that the looped brushes of different molecular weight, asymmetry, and tethering density adhere to scaling relationships derived for lightly cross-linked polymer gels.

On the pathway to synthesizing synthetic model systems for human cartilage, macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene sulfonate esters with different chain lengths and initiation site densities from 10 % to 100 % were synthesized. Polymer brushes from styrene sulfonate ethyl ester and styrene sulfonate dodecyl ester with varying grafting density, backbone length and side chain length were synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR, AUC, AFM, TEM, and in the case of the ethyl esters, GPC-MALLS. Polyelectrolyte brushes from styrene sulfonate were synthesized from the corresponding esters. These brushes were characterized in solution (GPC-MALLS, static and dynamic light scattering, SANS, 1H-NMR) and on solid interfaces (AFM and TEM). It was shown that these brushes may form extended aggregates in solution. The aggregation behavior and the size and shape of the aggregates depend on the side chain length and the degree of saponification. For samples with identical backbone and side chain length, but varying degrees of ester hydrolysis, marked differences in the aggregation behavior were observed. A functionalized ATRP macroinitiator with a positively charged head group was synthesized and employed for the synthesis of a functionalized polyelectrolyte brush. These brushes were found to form complexes with negatively charged latex particles and are thus suitable as proteoglycan models in the proteoglycan-hyaluronic acid complex.

Polymer brushes have unique properties with a large variety of possible applications ranging from responsive coatings and drug delivery to lubrication and sensing. For further development a detailed understanding of the properties is needed. Established characterization methods, however, only supply information of the surface. Experimental data about the inner “bulk” structure of polymer brushes is still missing.rnScattering methods under grazing incidence supply structural information of surfaces as well as structures beneath it. Nanomechanical cantilevers supply stress data, which is giving information about the forces acting inside the polymer brush film. In this thesis these two techniques are further developed and used to deepen the understanding of polymer brushes. rnThe experimental work is divided into four chapters. Chapter 2 deals with the preparation of polymer brushes on top of nanomechanical cantilever sensors as well as large area sample by using a “grafting-to” technique. The further development of nanomechanical cantilever readout is subject of chapter 3. In order to simplify cantilever sensing, a method is investigated which allows one to perform multiple bending experiments on top of a single cantilever. To do so, a way to correlate different curvatures is introduced as well as a way to conveniently locate differently coated segments. In chapter 4 the change in structure upon solvent treatment of mixed polymer brushes is investigated by using scattering methods and nanomechanical cantilevers amongst others. This allows one to explain the domain memory effect, which is typically found in such systems. Chapter 5 describes the implementation of a phase shifting interferometer - used for readout of nanomechanical cantilevers - into the µ-focused scattering beamline BW4, allowing simultaneous measurements of stress and structure information. The last experimental chapter 6 deals with the roughness correlation in polymer brushes and its dependence on the chain tethered density.rnIn summary, the thesis deals with utilization of new experimental techniques for the investigation of polymer brushes and further development of the techniques themselves.rn

Progress in making pH-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes with a range of different grafting densities is reported. Polymer brushes of poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) were synthesised via atom transfer radical polymerisation on silicon wafers using a 'grafted from' approach. The [11-(2-bromo-2-methyl) propionyloxy]undecyl trichlorosilane initiator was covalently attached to the silicon via silylation, from which the brushes were grown using a catalytic system of copper(I) chloride and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine in tetrahydrofuran at 80°C. X-ray reflectivity was used to assess the initiator surfaces and an upper limit on the grafting density of the polymer was determined. The quality of the brushes produced was analysed using ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy, which is also discussed.

Surface initiated polymerization (SIP) has become an attractive method for tailoring physical and chemical properties of surfaces for a broad range of applications. Most of those application relied on the merit of a high density coating. In this study we explored a long overlooked field of SIP. SIP from substrates of low initiator density. We combined ellipsometry with AFM to investigate the effect of initiatior density and polymerization time on the morphology of polymer coatings. In addition, we carefully adjusted the nanoscale separation of polymer chains to achieve a balance between nonfouling and immobilization capacities. We further tested the performance of those coating on various biosensors, such as quartz crystal microbalance, surface plasmon resonance, and protein microarrays. The optimized matrices enhanced the performance of those biosensors. This report shall encourage researches to explore new frontiers in SIP that go beyond polymer brushes.

Surface initiated polymerization (SIP) is a valuable tool in synthesizing functional polymer brushes, yet the kinetic understanding of SIP lags behind the development of its application. We apply quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to address two issues that are not fully addressed yet play a central role in the rational design of functional polymer brushes, namely quantitative determination of the kinetics and the initiator efficiency (IE) of SIP. SIP are monitored online using QCM. Two quantitative frequency-thickness (f-T) relations make the direct determination and comparison of the rate of polymerization possible even for different monomers. Based on the bi-termination model, the kinetics of SIP is simply described by two variables, which are related to two polymerization constants, namely a = 1/(k (p,s,app)-[M][R center dot](0)) and b = k (t,s,app)/(k (p,s,app)[M]). Factors that could alter the kinetics of SIP are studied, including (i) the molecular weight of monomers, (ii) the solvent used, (iii) the initial density of the initiator, (iv) the concentration of monomer, [M], and (v) the catalyst system (ratio among the ingredients, metal, ligands, and additives). The dynamic nature of IE is also described by these two variables, IE = a/(a + bt). Instead of the molecular weight and the polydispersity, we suggest that film thickness, the two kinetic parameters (a and b), and the initial density of the initiator and IE be the parameters that characterize ultra-thin polymer brushes. Besides the kinetics study of SIP, the reported method has many other applications, for example, in the fast screening of catalyst system for SIP and other polymerization systems.

A PEO-tethered layer on a PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) cross-linked network has been prepared by a swelling-deswelling process. During swelling, the PDMS block of a PDMS-b-PEO diblock copolymer penetrates into the PDMS substrate and interacts with PDMS chains because of the van der Waals force and hydrophobic interaction between them. Upon deswelling, the PDMS block is trapped in the PDMS matrix while the PEO, as a hydrophilic block, is tethered to the surface. The PEO-tethered layer showed stability when treated in water for 16 h. The surface fraction of PEO and the wetting property of the PEO-tethered PDMS surface can be controlled by the cross linking density of the PDMS matrix. A patterned PEO-tethered layer on a PDMS network was also created by microcontact printing and water condensation figures (CFs) were used to study the patterned surface with different wetting properties.

We present a systematic methodology to functionalize magnetic nanoparticles through surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The magnetite nanoparticles are prepared according to the method proposed by Sun et al. (2004), which leads to a monodisperse population of ~ 6 nm particles stabilized by oleic acid. The functionalization of the nanoparticles has been performed by transforming particles into macro-initiators for the ATRP, and to achieve this two different routes have been explored. The first one is the ligand-exchange method, which consists of replacing some oleic acid molecules adsorbed on the particle surface with molecules that act as an initiator for ATRP. The second method consists in using the addition reaction of bromine to the oleic acid double bond, which turns the oleic acid itself into an initiator for the ATRP. We have then grown polymer brushes of a variety of acrylic polymers on the particles, including polyisopropylacrylamide and polyacrylic acid. The nanoparticles so functionalized are water soluble and show responsive behavior: either temperature responsive behavior when polyisopropylacrylamide is grown from the surface or PH responsive in the case of polyacrylic acid. This methodology has potential applications in the control of clustering of magnetic nanoparticles.

Recent experiments have demonstrated that block copolymers are capable of stabilizing immiscible homopolymer blends producing bicontinuous microemulsion. The stability of these polymeric alloys requires the copolymer to form flexible, nonattractive monolayers along the homopolymer interfaces. We predict that copolymer polydispersity can substantially and simultaneously improve the monolayers in both of these respects. Furthermore, polydispersity should provide similar improvements in systems, such as colloidal suspensions and polymer/clay composites, that utilize polymer brushes to suppress attractive interactions.

The poly(dimethylamino methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brush-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was used to test the switch properties of interfacial activity caused by bioelectrochemical signals. The swelling of the polymer brushes increased when the medium's pH changed from alkaline to acid after glucose was added to the system. A pH change generated in situ by means of biocatalytic reactions enabled bioelectrocatalytic interface's reversible activation. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
