This work reports on the spectral dependence of both nonlinear refraction and absorption in lead-germanium oxide glasses (PbO-GeO2) containing silver nanoparticles. We have found that this material is suitable for all-optical switching at telecom wavelengths but at the visible range it behaves either as a saturable absorber or as an optical limiter. Tellurite glasses are photonic materials of special interest to the branch of optoelectronic and communication, due to its important optical properties such as high refractive index, broad IR transmittance, low phonon energy etc. Tellurite glasses are solutions to the search of potential candidates for nonlinear optical devices. Low phonon energy makes it an efficient host for dopant ions like rare earths, allowing a better environment for radiative transitions. The dopant ions maintain majority of their individual properties in the glass matrix. Tellurites are less toxic than chalcogenides, more chemically and thermally stable which makes them a highly suitable fiber material for nonlinear applications in the midinfrared and they are of increased research interest in applications like laser, amplifier, sensor etc. Low melting point and glass transition temperature helps tellurite glass preparation easier than other glass families. In order to probe into the versatility of tellurite glasses in optoelectronic industry; we have synthesized and undertaken various optical studies on tellurite glasses. We have proved that the highly nonlinear tellurite glasses are suitable candidates in optical limiting, with comparatively lower optical limiting threshold. Tuning the optical properties of glasses is an important factor in the optoelectronic research. We have found that thermal poling is an efficient mechanism in tuning the optical properties of these materials. Another important nonlinear phenomenon found in zinc tellurite glasses is their ability to switch from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption in the presence of lanthanide ions. The proposed thesis to be submitted will have seven chapters.

Magnetic susceptibility studies of lead oxyhalide glasses containing high concentrations of transition metal oxides such as MnO and Fe2O3 have been performed. While they exhibit predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions, the low temperature (<100K) region is dominated by paramagnetic contributions. The behaviour in these glasses is found to be similar to that of covalent oxide glasses and is different from that of purely ionic sulphate glasses.

The photoluminescence (PL) of a series of (GeS2)(80)(Ga2S3)(20) glasses doped with different amounts of Er (0.17, 0.35, 0.52, 1.05 and 1.39 at.%) at 77 and 4.2 K has been studied. The influence of the temperature on the emission cross-section of the PL bands at -> 1540, 980 and 820 nm under host excitation has been defined. A quenching effect of the host photoluminescence has been established from the compositional dependence of the PL intensity. It has been found that the present Er3+-doped Ge-S-Ga glasses posses PL lifetime values about 3.25 ms. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrical switching and differential scanning calorimetric studies are undertaken on bulk As20Te80-xGax glasses, to elucidate the network topological thresholds. It is found that these glasses exhibit a single glass transition (T-g) and two crystallization reactions (T-cl & T-c2) upon heating. It is also found that there is only a marginal change in T-g with the addition of up to about 10% of Ga; around this composition an increase is seen in 7, which culminates in a local maximum around x = 15. The decrease exhibited in T, beyond this composition, leads to a local minimum at x = 17.5. Further, the As20Te80-xGax glasses are found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (VT) increase with the increase in gallium content and a local maximum is seen in V-tau around x = 15. VT is found to decrease with x thereafter, exhibiting a local minimum around x = 17.5. The composition dependence of T-cl is found to be very similar to that of V-T of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Based on the present results, it is proposed that the composition x = 15 and x = 17.5 correspond to the rigidity percolation and chemical thresholds, respectively, of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Likely spatial distributions of network-modifying (and mobile) cations in (oxide) glasses are discussed here. At very low modifier concentrations, the ions form dipoles with non-bridging oxygen centres while, at higher levels of modification, the cations tend to order as a result of Coulombic interactions. Activation energies for cation migration are calculated, assuming that the ions occupy (face-sharing) octahedral sites. It is found that conductivity activation energy decreases markedly with increasing modifier content, in agreement with experiment.

Photoluminescence studies, carried out using the Fourier Transform method rather than the conventional monochromator-dispersion method, are reported on glassy samples of indium-bismuth mixed doped Ge (10) Se(90-x-y) In (x) Bi (y) system (x,y = 5,10). The amorphous Bi2Se3 is found to be n-type like the crystalline counterpart. The possible contributions from microscopic cluster-level phase separation of Bi2Se3 and from the defects to the change in conductivity from p- to n- typein this system is discussed. The similar situation in related systems is also pointed out.

Infrared (IR) luminescence covering 1.1 to similar to 1.6 mu m wavelength region was observed from bismuth-doped barium silicate glasses, excited by a laser diode at 808 nm wavelength region, at room temperature. The peak of the IR luminescence appears at 1325 nm. A full width half-maximum (FWHM) and the lifetime of the fluorescence is more than 200 nm and 400 mu s, respectively. The fluorescence intensity increases with Al2O3 content, but decreases with BaO content. We suggest that the IR luminescence should be ascribed to the low valence state of bismuth Bi2+ or Bi+, and Al3+ ions play an indirect dispersing role for the infrared luminescent centers.

Ce3+ and B2O3 are introduced into erbium-doped Bi2O3-SiO2 glass to enhance the luminescence emission and optic spectra characters of Er3+. The energy transfer from Er3+ to Ce3+ will obviously be improved with the phonon energy increasing by the addition of B2O3. Here, the nonradiative rate, the lifetime of the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(3/2) transition, and the emission intensity and bandwidth of the 1.5 mu m luminescence with the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(5/2) transition of Er3+ are discussed in detail. The results show that the optical parameters of Er3+ in this bismuth-borate-silicate glass are nearly as good as that in tellurite glass, and the physical properties are similar to those in silicate glass. With the Judd-Ofelt and nonradiative theory analyses, the multiphonon decay and phonon-assisted energy-transfer (PAT) rates are calculated for the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped glasses. For the PAT process, an optimum value of the glass phonon energy is obtained after B2O3 is introduced into the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped bismuth-silicate glasses, and it much improves the energy-transfer rate between Er3+ I-4(11/2)-I-4(13/2) and Ce3+ F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2), although there is an energy mismatch. Bismuth (Bi)-doped and Bi/Dy co-doped chalcohalide glasses are investigated as promising materials for amplifiers in optical communication. The samples synthesized at lower melting temperatures (MTs) are characterized by more intensified infrared emissions. With respect to the redox process of a liquid mixture at different MTs, we attribute an emission at 1230 nm to low-valent Bi ions. The lower MT favors the formation of LVB ions, i.e. Bi+ or Bi2+, while the higher MT promotes the production of higher-valent Bi ions Bi3+. An enhanced broadband infrared luminescence with the full-width at half-maximum over 200 nm is achieved from the present Bi/Dy co-doped chalcohalide glasses.

Yb3+/Tm3+-codoped oxychloride germanate glasses for developing potential upconversion lasers have been fabricated and characterized. Structural properties were obtained based on the Raman spectra analysis, indicating that PbCl2 plays an important role in the formation of glass network and has an important influence on the maximum phonon energies of host glasses. Intense blue and weak red emissions centered at 477 and 650 nm, corresponding to the transitions (1)G(4) -> H-3(6) and (1)G(4) -> H-3(4), respectively, were observed at room temperature. With increasing PbCl2 content, the intensity of blue (477 nm) emission increases significantly, while the red (650 nm) emission increases slowly. The results indicate that PbCl2 has more influence on the blue emissions than the red emission in oxychloride germanate glasses. The possible upconversion mechanisms are discussed and estimated. Intense blue upconversion luminescence indicates that these oxychloride germanate glasses can be used as potential host material for upconversion lasers. The effects of F- ions in Yb3+-doped tellurite glass systems on the emission cross-section and measured fluorescence lifetime are investigated. The results show that both the emission cross-section and the fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions increase from 1.32 to 1.39 pm(2) and from 0.93 to 1.12 ms respectively with the increase of F- ions from 0 to 10 mol% and that such oxyfluoride tellurite glass system is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of F- ions on the structure of tellurite glasses and the change of OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that the addition of fluoride decreases the symmetry of the structure of tellurite glasses resulting in increasing of the emission cross-section and removes the OH- groups resulting in increasing of the measured fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions. Yb3+Er3+-codoped chloride-modified germanate-bismuth-lead glasses have been synthesized by the conventional melting and quenching method. Structural and thermal stability properties have been obtained on the basis of the Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis, which indicate that the PbCl2 addition has an important influence on the phonon density of states, maximum phonon energy, and thermal stability of host glasses. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum efficiencies were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory and lifetime measurements. For the 1.53 mu m emission band, the full widths at the half-maximum increase and peak wavelengths are blueshifted with increasing PbCl2 content. Moreover, the effect of the PbCl2 addition on the phonon density of states, OH- content, and upconversion luminescence has been discussed and evaluated. Our results reveal that, with increasing PbCl2 content, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced upconversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. The effects of F- ions in a germanium-lead-tellurite glass system oil the spectral and potential laser properties of the Yb3+ are investigated. The absorption spectra, lifetimes, the emission cross-sections and the minimum pump intensities of the glass system with and without F- ions have been measured and calculated. The results show that the fluorescence lifetime and the minimum pump intensity of Yb3+ ions increase evidently, which indicates that germanium lead-oxyfluoride tellurite glass is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyse the effect of F- ions on OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that addition of fluoride removes the OH- groups and results in improvement of fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+.
