Transmission expansion planning (TEP) is a classic problem in electric power systems. In current optimization models used to approach the TEP problem, new transmission lines and two-winding transformers are commonly used as the only candidate solutions. However, in practice, planners have resorted to non-conventional solutions such as network reconfiguration and/or repowering of existing network assets (lines or transformers). These types of non-conventional solutions are currently not included in the classic mathematical models of the TEP problem. This paper presents the modeling of necessary equations, using linear expressions, in order to include non-conventional candidate solutions in the disjunctive linear model of the TEP problem. The resulting model is a mixed integer linear programming problem, which guarantees convergence to the optimal solution by means of available classical optimization tools. The proposed model is implemented in the AMPL modeling language and is solved using CPLEX optimizer. The Garver test system, IEEE 24-busbar system, and a Colombian system are used to demonstrate that the utilization of non-conventional candidate solutions can reduce investment costs of the TEP problem. ABSTRACT ONTOLOGIES AND METHODS FOR INTEROPERABILITY OF ENGINEERING ANALYSIS MODELS (EAMS) IN AN E-DESIGN ENVIRONMENT SEPTEMBER 2007 NEELIMA KANURI, B.S., BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCES PILANI INDIA M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Ian Grosse Interoperability is the ability of two or more systems to exchange and reuse information efficiently. This thesis presents new techniques for interoperating engineering tools using ontologies as the basis for representing, visualizing, reasoning about, and securely exchanging abstract engineering knowledge between software systems. The specific engineering domain that is the primary focus of this report is the modeling knowledge associated with the development of engineering analysis models (EAMs). This abstract modeling knowledge has been used to support integration of analysis and optimization tools in iSIGHT FD , a commercial engineering environment. ANSYS , a commercial FEA tool, has been wrapped as an analysis service available inside of iSIGHT-FD. Engineering analysis modeling (EAM) ontology has been developed and instantiated to form a knowledge base for representing analysis modeling knowledge. The instances of the knowledge base are the analysis models of real world applications. To illustrate how abstract modeling knowledge can be exploited for useful purposes, a cantilever I-Beam design optimization problem has been used as a test bed proof-of-concept application. Two distinct finite element models of the I-beam are available to analyze a given beam design- a beam-element finite element model with potentially lower accuracy but significantly reduced computational costs and a high fidelity, high cost, shell-element finite element model. The goal is to obtain an optimized I-beam design at minimum computational expense. An intelligent KB tool was developed and implemented in FiPER . This tool reasons about the modeling knowledge to intelligently shift between the beam and the shell element models during an optimization process to select the best analysis model for a given optimization design state. In addition to improved interoperability and design optimization, methods are developed and presented that demonstrate the ability to operate on ontological knowledge bases to perform important engineering tasks. One such method is the automatic technical report generation method which converts the modeling knowledge associated with an analysis model to a flat technical report. The second method is a secure knowledge sharing method which allocates permissions to portions of knowledge to control knowledge access and sharing. Both the methods acting together enable recipient specific fine grain controlled knowledge viewing and sharing in an engineering workflow integration environment, such as iSIGHT-FD. These methods together play a very efficient role in reducing the large scale inefficiencies existing in current product design and development cycles due to poor knowledge sharing and reuse between people and software engineering tools. This work is a significant advance in both understanding and application of integration of knowledge in a distributed engineering design framework.

The efficiency of power optimization tools depends on information on design power provided by the power estimation models. Power models targeting different power groups can enable fast identification of the most power consuming parts of design and their properties. The accuracy of these estimation models is highly dependent on the accuracy of the method used for their characterization. The highest precision is achieved by using physical onboard measurements. In this paper, we present a measurement methodology that is primarily aimed at calibrating and validating high-level dynamic power estimation models. The measurements have been carefully designed to enable the separation of the interconnect power from the logic power and the power of the clock circuitry, so that each of these power groups can be used for the corresponding model validation. The standard measurement uncertainty is lower than 2% of the measured value even with a very small number of repeated measurements. Additionally, the accuracy of a commercial low-level power estimation tool has been also assessed for comparison purposes. The results indicate that the tool is not suitable for power estimation of data path-oriented designs.

In this paper, several computational schemes are presented for the optimal tuning of the global behavior of nonlinear dynamical sys- tems. Specifically, the maximization of the size of domains of attraction associated with invariants in parametrized dynamical sys- tems is addressed. Cell Mapping (CM) tech- niques are used to estimate the size of the domains, and such size is then maximized via different optimization tools. First, a ge- netic algorithm is tested whose performance shows to be good for determining global maxima at the expense of high computa- tional cost. Secondly, an iterative scheme based on a Stochastic Approximation proce- dure (the Kiefer-Wolfowitz algorithm) is eval- uated showing acceptable performance at low cost. Finally, several schemes combining neu- ral network based estimations and optimiza- tion procedures are addressed with promising results. The performance of the methods is illus- trated with two applications: first on the well-known van der Pol equation with stan- dard parametrization, and second the tuning of a controller for saturated systems.

These slides present several 3-D reconstruction methods to obtain the geometric structure of a scene that is viewed by multiple cameras. We focus on the combination of the geometric modeling in the image formation process with the use of standard optimization tools to estimate the characteristic parameters that describe the geometry of the 3-D scene. In particular, linear, non-linear and robust methods to estimate the monocular and epipolar geometry are introduced as cornerstones to generate 3-D reconstructions with multiple cameras. Some examples of systems that use this constructive strategy are Bundler, PhotoSynth, VideoSurfing, etc., which are able to obtain 3-D reconstructions with several hundreds or thousands of cameras.

Wireless sensor networks are posed as the new communication paradigm where the use of small, low-complexity, and low-power devices is preferred over costly centralized systems. The spectra of potential applications of sensor networks is very wide, ranging from monitoring, surveillance, and localization, among others. Localization is a key application in sensor networks and the use of simple, efficient, and distributed algorithms is of paramount practical importance. Combining convex optimization tools with consensus algorithms we propose a distributed localization algorithm for scenarios where received signal strength indicator readings are used. We approach the localization problem by formulating an alternative problem that uses distance estimates locally computed at each node. The formulated problem is solved by a relaxed version using semidefinite relaxation technique. Conditions under which the relaxed problem yields to the same solution as the original problem are given and a distributed consensusbased implementation of the algorithm is proposed based on an augmented Lagrangian approach and primaldual decomposition methods. Although suboptimal, the proposed approach is very suitable for its implementation in real sensor networks, i.e., it is scalable, robust against node failures and requires only local communication among neighboring nodes. Simulation results show that running an additional local search around the found solution can yield performance close to the maximum likelihood estimate.

A notorious advantage of wireless transmission is a significant reduction and simplification in wiring and harness. There are a lot of applications of wireless systems, but in many occasions sensor nodes require a specific housing to protect the electronics from hush environmental conditions. Nowadays the information is scarce and nonspecific on the dynamic behaviour of WSN and RFID. Therefore the purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behaviour of the sensors. A series of trials were designed and performed covering temperature steps between cold room (5 °C), room temperature (23 °C) and heated environment (35 °C). As sensor nodes: three Crossbow motes, a surface mounted Nlaza module (with sensor Sensirion located on the motherboard), an aerial mounted Nlaza where the Sensirion sensor stayed at the end of a cable), and four tags RFID Turbo Tag (T700 model with and without housing), and 702-B (with and without housing). To assess the dynamic behaviour a first order response approach is used and fitted with dedicated optimization tools programmed in Matlab that allow extracting the time response (?) and corresponding determination coefficient (r2) with regard to experimental data. The shorter response time (20.9 s) is found for the uncoated T 700 tag which encapsulated version provides a significantly higher response (107.2 s). The highest ? corresponds to the Crossbow modules (144.4 s), followed by the surface mounted Nlaza module (288.1 s), while the module with aerial mounted sensor gives a response certainly close above to the T700 without coating (42.8 s). As a conclusion, the dynamic response of temperature sensors within wireless and RFID nodes is dramatically influenced by the way they are housed (to protect them from the environment) as well as by the heat released by the node electronics itself; its characterization is basic to allow monitoring of high rate temperature changes and to certify the cold chain. Besides the time to rise and to recover is significantly different being mostly higher for the latter than for the former.

The sizing process of a water distribution network is based on several variables, being some of them special, as they are discrete and their values are standardized: pipe pressure rating, pipe diameter and pipe cost. On another note, the sizing process is directly related with the pressure at the network head. Given that during the optimization by means of the Granados’ Method (based on dynamic programming) the pressure at the network head is being gradually reduced, a jump from one pipe pressure rating to another may arise during the sequential process, leading to changes on the pipe cost and on the gradient change (unitary cost for reducing the head losses). This chain of changes may, in turn, affect the sequential process diverting it from an optimal policies path. This thesis analyses how the abovementioned alterations could influence the results of the dynamic programming algorithm, that is to say the compatibility with the Bellman’s Principle of Optimality, which states that the sequence has to follow a route of optimal policies, and that past decisions should not influence the remaining ones. The modification of the gradient change is known as mutation. Mutations are active when they affect the optimal link (the one which was selected to be changed during iteration) or passive when they do not alter the selection of the optimal link. The thesis analysed the potential mutations processes along the network, both on the optimal paths and also on the rest of the network, and its influence on the final results. Moreover, the investigation analysed the practical restrictions of the sizing process that are fully integrated in the applied engineering, but not always taken into account by the optimization tools. As the telescopic distribution of the diameters (i.e. larger diameters are placed at the network head) and the use of a unique diameter per link (with the exception of very large links, where two consecutive diameters may be placed). Conclusions regarding robustness of the dynamic programming algorithm are given. The sequence of the Granados Method is quite robust and it has been shown capable to auto-correct the mutations that could arise during the optimization process, and to achieve an optimal distribution even when the Bellman’s Principle of Optimality is not fully accomplished. The fact that the gradient change is always increasing during the optimization (that is to say, the marginal cost of reducing head losses is always increasing), provides robustness to the algorithm, as looping are avoided in the optimization sequence. Additionally, insight into the causes of the mutation process is provided and practical rules to avoid it are given, improving the current definition and utilization of the Granados’ Method.

Two-phase flow heat exchangers have been shown to have very high efficiencies, but the lack of a dependable model and data precludes them from use in many cases. Herein a new method for the measurement of local convective heat transfer coefficients from the outside of a heat transferring wall has been developed, which results in accurate local measurements of heat flux during two-phase flow. This novel technique uses a chevron-pattern corrugated plate heat exchanger consisting of a specially machined Calcium Fluoride plate and the refrigerant HFE7100, with heat flux values up to 1 W cm-2 and flow rates up to 300 kg m-2s-1. As Calcium Fluoride is largely transparent to infra-red radiation, the measurement of the surface temperature of PHE that is in direct contact with the liquid is accomplished through use of a mid-range (3.0-5.1 µm) infra-red camera. The objective of this study is to develop, validate, and use a unique infrared thermometry method to quantify the heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling within different Plate Heat Exchanger geometries. This new method allows high spatial and temporal resolution measurements. Furthermore quasi-local pressure measurements enable us to characterize the performance of each geometry. Validation of this technique will be demonstrated by comparison to accepted single and two-phase data. The results can be used to come up with new heat transfer correlations and optimization tools for heat exchanger designers. The scientific contribution of this thesis is, to give PHE developers further tools to allow them to identify the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of any corrugated plate pattern directly without the need to account for typical error sources due to inlet and outlet distribution systems. Furthermore, the designers will now gain information on the local heat transfer distribution within one plate heat exchanger cell which will help to choose the correct corrugation geometry for a given task.

Regarding canal management modernization, water savings and water delivery quality, the study presents two automatic canal control approaches of the PI (Proportional and Integral) type: the distant and the local downstream control modes. The two PI controllers are defined, tuned and tested using an hydraulic unsteady flow simulation model, particularly suitable for canal control studies. The PI control parameters are tuned using optimization tools. The simulations are done for a Portuguese prototype canal and the PI controllers are analyzed and compared considering a demand-oriented-canal operation. The paper presents and analyzes the two control modes answers for five different offtake types – gate controlled weir, gate controlled orifice, weir with or without adjustable height and automatic flow adjustable offtake. The simulation results are compared using water volumes performance indicators (considering the demanded, supplied and the effectives water volumes) and a time indicator, defined taking into account the time during which the demand discharges are effective discharges. Regarding water savings, the simulation results for the five offtake types prove that the local downstream control gives the best results (no water operational losses) and that the distant downstream control presents worse results in connection with the automatic flow adjustable offtakes. Considering the water volumes and time performance indicators, the best results are obtained for the automatic flow adjustable offtakes and the worse for the gate controlled orifices, followed by the weir with adjustable height.

Micro-tools offer significant promise in a wide range of applications Such as cell Manipulation, microsurgery, and micro/nanotechnology processes. Such special micro-tools consist of multi-flexible structures actuated by two or more piezoceramic devices that must generate output displacements and forces lit different specified points of the domain and at different directions. The micro-tool Structure acts as a mechanical transformer by amplifying and changing the direction of the piezoceramics Output displacements. The design of these micro-tools involves minimization of the coupling among movements generated by various piezoceramics. To obtain enhanced micro-tool performance, the concept of multifunctional and functionally graded materials is extended by, tailoring elastic and piezoelectric properties Of the piezoceramics while simultaneously optimizing the multi-flexible structural configuration using multiphysics topology optimization. The design process considers the influence of piezoceramic property gradation and also its polarization sign. The method is implemented considering continuum material distribution with special interpolation of fictitious densities in the design domain. As examples, designs of a single piezoactuator, an XY nano-positioner actuated by two graded piezoceramics, and a micro-gripper actuated by three graded piezoceramics are considered. The results show that material gradation plays an important role to improve actuator performance, which may also lead to optimal displacements and coupling ratios with reduced amount of piezoelectric material. The present examples are limited to two-dimensional models because many of the applications for Such micro-tools are planar devices. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
